[Staff Spotlight] Get to know tipsymocha

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

The first half of my username was one of my unfortunate high school nicknames, because my name apparently resembles some rapper whose one-hit wonder was the song “Tipsy.” And “mocha” I chose because it represents two of my favorite things: coffee and chocolate! Also, I’m not sure whether you can tell, but my avatar is supposed to be Belle, of Beauty and the Beast, who is my spirit Disney princess.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

I’m not sure I even remember my first drama since my parents were/are regular drama-watchers, but I think it was the sitcom Nonstop and Ha Ji-won’s Damo that first got me interested in dramaland. I’m judging that by the fact that they were the first two I bought the soundtracks to.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

Prior to my current job, I worked for a government contractor doing business development and translator work. Now, I’m working at a law firm, though I’m not a lawyer (yet).

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

This never happens to me, but I was in Seoul a couple years ago and met up with a friend for drinks. We were walking outside when a couple of really drunk guys kept following to yell at us to accompany them, and when they got closer to grab us, another group of guys came between us and the drunks. They were polite about it but firmly held their ground, and they were CUTE. Eugh, I wish my friend and I had thought to introduce ourselves, but we were a bit shaken up and left after saying a quick thank you.

What drama genres do you especially like?

Oh, I’m not picky at all, but I have found that I like at least a little action/thriller element in the show, even if it might be predominantly a romance, or a comedy, or a sageuk.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Nothing really, I embrace all genres. I do have some trouble with too much cheese, or heavy makjang melo elements, though.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

I was actually really surprised by my own answer, because I started out Answer Me 1988 absolutely hating Bora. Superficially, we have a couple of things in common: We’re both the eldest of three siblings and we both pursued/are pursuing a career in law. But it was her relationship with her father, and how they’re so stubbornly similar that their interactions were always gruff and short, but filled with unspoken affection, that brought tears to my eyes because I recognized it in my own relationship with my dad when I was growing up.

What drama character would you want to be?

Oh, geez, if you asked me a couple months in the past or in the future, the answer would be different because I have the memory of a goldfish. Right now, I would say Lee Yuri’s character in Father Is Strange, because she’s such a badass older sister. Her takedown of Jung So-min’s bully was #lifegoals.

What was your major in school?

International relations. Ahh the memories. Makes me want to whip out Francis Fukuyama for old times’ sake.

What’s a random skill you have?

I am randomly really lucky at poker and Go-Stop for a certain amount of time. I only play with family for fun, (I don’t gamble in real life, lol) but the skill is knowing when to stop. Because my luck really does run out completely after a winning streak at the beginning, it’s so weird.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

This is cruel, it’s like asking me which parent I love more, you know, if I had ten moms and ten dads. I’ll just say Sherlock, since I just caught the latest season on Netflix (it was so good!!).

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Yoo Jae-seok! Yoo neu-nim! <3<3

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)

To be honest, it would probably be a three-way tie between pride, gluttony, and sloth. If I had to choose one, though, it would be sloth.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

Uh, I could say that Answer Me 1988 *is* that mutant baby drama. But fine: Deok-sun and her gang become political activists at university and become targets of shadowy political movers and shakers. Deok-sun and her husband (whose identity NO ONE knows, ever) have a daughter who becomes a journalist, and Jung-hwan has a son who grows up to be a nightly errand boy who is earning money to buy his own private island. Deok-sun, husband, and Jung-hwan all die, and Jung-hwan’s son gets mentored by Dong-ryong, fresh out of jail, in order to get his revenge. The two kids meet, fall in love, and win against the baddies. The end.

Sherlock is love! But I do admit not watching the last two episodes of the last season because it's the LAST.

Not necessarily. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have both said in the last couple of weeks that they expect to do another season, but the hiatus will probably be long.

Seriously??? Ah, hiatus, we Sherlockians are perfectly trained already, eh? What's a couple of more years, really, so long as we get to see Cumberbatch and Freeman together again on our screen.

And since Moffat has officially stepped down from Doctor Who, he surely has more times on his hands. Yes, good, this'll work.

Yes and Benedict actually signed on for five seasons so that also makes me hopeful for another season down the track. They've got such a great thing, why wouldn't they keep going with it? ?

Same here! Haven't touched the last 2 episodes of the latest season... not because it's the last, it just so happens that I never got around to watching it.

I haven't watched the last two episodes either! But because I'm still recovering Mary's story arc. I can't bring myself to seeing Freeman in the last two episodes, and his devestation. *Still feels like there's a boulder in my stomach when I think of it. Benedict Cumberbatch is still my British bias.

Mary's story arc is a little painful to watch and I still can't believe what happened in the first episode of the last season.

Agree, Sherlock is so much ❤️❤️❤️!

And neener, are we soul siblings or what? I also dislike watching the very last episode of any series I hold dear. But I did watch Sherlock's, since I hate being spoiled by the memes/reaction posts/anything.

Maybe we are *high5 because I totally do that with the dramas I'm watching. Sometimes I hold it off for a few days. But Sherlock is a bit special so I'm gonna hold it off for as long as I can or when I get a news that a new season will happen.

That mutant drama sounds like a combination of 2 favourite dramas or is either Healer or Answer Me 1988 your most hated drama?

And yes, Sherlock is love! ❤

Nice to meet you all!! Healer and Answer Me 1988 are both favorites but the who's-the-husband part of the latter ignited a burning fury I've never heretofore experienced in dramaland. Eugh, my heart still hurts just looking at Ryu Joon-yeol's face.

Wait, your most hated drama is Healer?
Belle is my spirit Disney princess too and my little sister says I'm a lot like Byun Hye-young, awesome woman that she is. I felt incredibly flattered when she said that. I assumed your user name was because you liked your mocha with like a shot of booze or something. Irish Mocha maybe? Nice to meet you fellow coffee fiend.

Is it that "eerybody in the club gettin' tipsy" song? I'm curious if your name sounds like J-Kwon or Jerrell. I went and looked him up because I know that song.

Ahh yes. That would be J-Kwon, lol.

Guess most of us don't listen to much rap (?)

Oh god, no. Healer is a favorite. So is Answer Me 1988 actually, but the husband identity part of it is my most hated sub-plot ever.

Yes! I rarely get mad, for dramas or in real life, but I was steaming mad at the whole husband thing. Not because I had a ship but because it was just so manipulative and ruined what would have been one of my most favorite dramas ever.

I am so sorry to hear about your encounter with bunch of rude drunk guys in Seoul but happy to hear there were heroes to the rescue. If the drama moment did continue to unfold, I would fully expect you and your friend to fake tipsyness and ask the cute guys for piggy-back rides.

Sometimes I feel that going to court is a lot like gambling. Do you agree? If so, you might want to keep the fact that your luck runs out after a winning streak to yourself in the future.

Hello Tipsymocha!

I could totally watch your baby mutant drama..lol

And Yoo neu-nim is ❤️️! I always wished one of his shows would film in my country. I already have a plan of renting a bike, darting through traffic and basically risking my life (and job) following the crew wherever they go. Haha!

Hi @tipsymocha ~~ I used to watch Nonstop a lot when we had the Arirang channel when I was a kid. I only now have a vague memory of having watched Jang Nara from that show. And yay to Sherlock, although I'm yet to finish season 4. Thank you for all the awesome updates! :D

Hello and nice to know you Tipsymocha!

I always like your name. I think it's really cute.

I remember your name from at least one of the recent dramas you captured. I can't figure out which one you did capture but it had to be the one I like haha ( was it Chicago typewriter? Romantic teacher? Bok joo?)

Unlike you, I have absolutely no luck when it comes to gambling. Guess the only way for me to get something is to work hard.

Hi @tipsymocha! Nice to meet you!

I was scratching my head there for a moment wondering why you would hate either Healer or Answer Me 1988. Then I read your comment above. Good to know you love both instead. ?

That experience you had in Seoul was scary. Good thing their were knights in shining armour watching over you adn your friend. Too bad you didnt get to the romance part of the drama.

Good luck on your studies!

When I was in Daegu last year, my sister and I got on the subway where a very drunk man was becoming increasingly obnoxious. So much so that subway security (maybe from transit authority?) got on after a couple of stops to escort off. This really nice guy stepped in front of my sister and me so that we wouldn't get hurt and this college kid helped security get the drunk guy off the subway. It was great how these guys stepped up to help out.
