Yoo Yeon-seok joins Mr. Sunshine as tragic second lead

Good news: Yoo Yeon-seok (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) is coming back in a new drama, and it’s hit writer Kim Eun-sook’s upcoming blockbuster period drama Mr. Sunshine. Bad news: He’s been cast to play a tragic character who falls in love with the heroine. Nooooooooo. How could anyone cast Yoo Yeon-seok as a second lead after what we all went through with Chilbongie? I CANNOT DO THAT AGAIN. Why would you make me do that again?!

Mr. Sunshine is the latest project from writer Kim Eun-sook and PD Lee Eung-bok of The Lonely Shining Goblin and Descended From the Sun, and it’s a historical drama set in the early 1900s about the “righteous army” that sprang up to defend the country as Japan exerted more and more dominance over Korea. Lee Byung-heon (Master, Inside Men) has signed on to headline as a character who gets taken to the U.S. as a young boy following the 1871 Shinmiyangyo armed conflict, and years later returns to Joseon, the country that abandoned him. While stationed in Joseon as a U.S. soldier, he meets a young aristocratic lady. Rising film actress Kim Tae-ri (The Handmaiden) has been cast to play the young lady who is the last of the noble Go family bloodline, one of the pillars of the nation.

Yoo Yeon-seok is confirmed to co-star as the son of a lowly butcher who flees his homeland and goes to Japan in search of a new life. He’s described as a tragic character who falls in love with Kim Tae-ri’s aristocratic young lady, and will risk everything for his love.

Even though I dread the heartache ahead of me, I do see why he was cast. It sounds like a complex character who’s meant to be villainous but tragically sympathetic, which makes me think of Park Ki-woong’s role in Gaksital. Yoo Yeon-seok actually has more experience with this darker, double-edged character type that he often plays in films (Love Lies, Perfect Proposal, The Royal Tailor, A Werewolf Boy, Introduction to Architecture), rather than the nice guy he’s been playing in dramaland, so I expect a gut-wrenching performance that will make me hate him, and love him, and hate that I love him.

So… what are the odds that he’ll secretly become a patriot and a double agent for the Japanese, and get a loveline with Kim Tae-ri’s maid? It could happen, right? *grasps at optimism straws*

Mr. Sunshine is in the works for an early 2018 premiere.

I don't know how to feel about this. I don't want to suffer SLS and I love when Kim Eun-sook doesn't write love triangles. But, ugh him against LBH is a no-brainer. He's going to wreck my heart, I'm certain of it.

I didn't expect YYS to sign up for a drama so soon since it was said he has rejected drama and movies love-calls to star in the musical Hedwig (running from Aug 18 to Nov 5), so this come as a rather pleasant surprise.

I was excited since it was said he was going to play a villain (been missing to see his villainous roles) in the drama. But tragic second lead that'll will risk whatever for his love? what. now I need to reconsider if I'd like to inflict myself with the pain and heartbreak.

Even established actor like Lee Byung Hun can't decline Kim Eun Sook's drama, I don't think Yoo Yeon Seok will say no to her ? Good drama or not, not everyone can get this kind of oppurtunity. ?

I don't mind that he could be a tragic second lead again because i haven't watched Reply 1994 yet, but like you i had no interest until now for the main cast and the writer/director.
Now i'm feeling very conflicted about not watching it. He was very good in Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and i'm very curious to see his take on a more dramatic character...

Seeing that this is the second lead, I guess YYS wants to do this role because of his passion for acting, and of course work in a veteran writer's project. My respect for him. Maybe this time he 'will' climb the ladder and gain some much-deserved limelight. I was quite scared by his villain on 'the werewolf boy', which showed what a great actor he is, so can't not say that he kind of does this angst-ridden, psychologically traumatic characters well.

I have nothing against LBH but I'd rather they make YYS as the Mr. Sunshine. He fits more to be the typical KES's 1st male lead. YYS & KTR are both easy on the eyes and I can't even imagine LBH & KTR being a couple since both look like uncle and niece. Gosh I rant too much. Ah and the description of YYS's character makes me worry. TT

I totally agree. When I pulled up Dramabeans and saw the title of this article, my heart broke. I prefer YYS as the lead too since he does look better with KTR in terms of age gap. His character description doesn't seem like it will give him a happy ending and I am not ready for that whatsoever.

Yeay for I can see him in new drama but noooooo why does he have to be " a tragic character who falls in love with the heroine". I thought Kim Eun Sook's dramas suppose to not have "tragic second lead" for they always have lovey-dovey second couple. why can't she make one for uri chilbongie?

I may be in a minority here, but I think this guy only suits villain roles because he has that type of creepy face some actors have. I saw Reply 1994 and his goody two shoes act looked fake, so if he plays a villain here then it's all good.

Not at all lol
Like I said, he's the type of actor who has a mean aura to him and he just doesn't fit positive roles. It seemed to me like he was forcing too hard to be good in Reply. But that's no problem, all movies and dramas need villains after all, he can play those.

I love him in his roles in movie better than his drama but I didn't finish Reply 94 so I can't comment his acting here. imo, he seems to do better in heavy role.

Maybe it's because I saw him in Reply 1994 first and then watched his Perfect Proposal, I just couldn't believe Chilbong could be that evil!

1

Oh, thank goodness...I thought I was the only one that wasn't hoping for a romantic lead role for him. Chilbongie did nothing for me in Reply 1994. And in Warm & Cozy I disliked his character so much for most of the show that I almost rage quit.
I think you are right about being suited to villain roles. He played the bad guy in Werewolf Boy and he nailed it.

I feel she is underrated despite being the Queen Seondok. Night Light was such a debacle, I felt bad for her. I am desperate to see her come back with a bang.

I hope so too. But she may prefer to do projects she likes than the more popular ones. I don't know. I hope she will come back with a good project. Night Light was not bad overall,if we enjoy this type of drama. At least she got new dongsaeng/ best friend irl i. e Uee ? hehe.

It honestly feels like KES is testing my limits.
-LBH as first male lead who is swoon worthy and so~ romantic?
-I am not fan but he is a good actor so that's okay

-Female lead who has baby face and is 19 years younger?
-it isn't that big age gap, plus she is a good actress

-Love triangle where girl chooses 19 years older guy?
-Ouch, shipping OTP was hard enough as it is.

-Yoo Yeon-Seok would get Chillbonged again?
-Ouch, I'm not gonna see that

I don't really understand KES's choice..T.T
LBH doesn't have likable charm and KTR too young for him I prefer Son Ye Jin (maybe) with him or change the Lead to YYS...
Current OTP doesn't match so It'll be hit or miss...
But I remember 20 years age gap between Yoona and Lee Bum Soo but they have so adorable chemistry wkwkwk hope KES can make us ship LBH and KTR in drama ^.^

Required fields are marked *

Yoona and Lee Bum Soo were rare case. I think Yoona had more chemistry with a guy 20 years her senior than all the others that she has acted with combined. And that may have to do more with Lee Bum Soo adapting himself to her skills and compensating. I can't believe Prime Minister and I ruined the show with that ambiguous end.
I really dislike KES's new found love for age-gap romance. I hated that Kim Go Eun's character started off as an aeygo filled high school girl at the beginning. I know technically Kim Tae Ri can act opposite a man 20 years his senior as she is an adult and she is a good actress but I hope KES does address the gap in a dignified manner.

Yoona and Lee bum soo is married couple in drama so their romance is still believable, and not cheesy like DOTS...

I see no problem with huge age gap, because it is nothing new. Chemistry will not be a big problem either, some actressess have proved that they can have great chemistry with much older actor.

My only problem, type of the romance in KES's drama is always a cheesy type, and I'm no longer can picture Lee Byung Hun doing all cheesy lines like Song Joongki in DOTS or Gong Yoo in Goblin lol. But I believe this writer+ director know what they are doing, so I'll just see how it goes later.
