Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

I have a whole backlog of premieres I still haven’t watched, but then someone had the bright idea to issue a challenge to rewatch an old drama this month, thereby ensuring dark circles for one and all. What’s on your drama-watching plate this week—something old, something new, something happy, or something that ripped your heart out and left you for dead? –girlfriday

javabeans

Father Is Strange: I’ve been impressed with how this show has dealt with the you’re-not-really-my-father storyline, in that it has treated every character’s reactions as valid and significant. I was so expecting this show to go the easy route—to show some token anger and hurt from Joong-hee, and then resolve—but not only have we walked through his turmoil with him, we’ve also seen this truth affecting other people’s lives in a real way, and that just makes everything feel so much more sincere and worthwhile. THAT SAID, can we rev up the Joong-hee-Mi-young romance now, please? We only have eight episodes left and I want as much of it as possible!

Reunited Worlds: I’m behind on this and am studiously avoiding spoilers. La la la la la, I can’t hear you!

Criminal Minds: I’m surprised that they purposely plotted the episodes so that they don’t quite align with the cases—cases end midway through, and then new ones start. It’s… a choice, all right. On paper I like this idea, since it feels more boxed-in and repetitive for one episode to perfectly encompass one case, lather-rinse-repeat next episode, but in effect it feels sort of haphazard. The reason it doesn’t bother me too much is that I’m definitely not watching this drama for the cases, which to me are more like character-development-delivery-vehicles. And excuses for Lee Jun-ki to kick ass.

Bride of the Water God 2017: I think I like this drama’s story in concept more than in execution, but maybe that’s mostly a casting issue. I’m totally fine with Nam Joo-hyuk and Shin Se-kyung, and I laugh at their cute moments and feel all the appropriate emotional tugs for their love-that-cannot-be—but man do I hate Krystal and Gong Myung in this, both in character and in acting. Instant mood-killers.

girlfriday

School 2017: Oh broken, broody bromance, where would School be without you? We’ve got one hothead, one cool cucumber, and a whole lot of love lost between them, and the more they growl at each other, the more I love the show. We’re getting to a really great place with the relationship-driven storylines, and as a bonus, Teacher’s growth arc totally makes me go awww.

Falsify: I kind of wish people would wear hats that identify what side they’re on, because there are just a lot of friggin people in this story world. But I’m really digging the sense of urgency in the drama, propelled by the constant competition between newspapers to break the story and shape public opinion. Because truth, as we know, is all about how you spin it.

Reunited Worlds: I keep waiting for this show to give my heartstrings a good tug, but it never really goes anywhere past light and pleasant. I enjoy it and find all the characters likable and sweet, but the writing is disappointing me because Hae-sung doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything, even though he has like twelve people’s lives to fix and two murders to solve! Chop chop!

odilettante

New Journey to the West: As a fan of Agatha Christie who’s always wanted to ride on a sleeper train, I loved Na PD’s delight in creating his very own “Murder on the Orient Express.” I still don’t exactly understand how everyone decided Ho-dong was the killer when all the clues clearly pointed to Kyuhyun, but I’m happy Kyuhyun somehow succeeded in fooling everyone (even if it gave me worrisome flashbacks to the Mafia game). I’m also thrilled that Kyuhyun managed to finish his morning mission because he totally deserves to enjoy breakfast on his final day of filming (hey, I’m biased!), although I’m dying to know what the other missions were and if the guys were able to outsmart each other — or just outsmart themselves.

chickachunga

Forest of Secrets: Perfection. Now that I’ve found my favorite drama of 2017, all other dramas will pale in comparison. Oh well. To the beanies who are only now starting Forest, I am jealous! All sixteen scrumptious episodes just waiting to be devoured!

tineybeanie

Currently recapping: Falsify

Suspicious Partner: Hehe I finally got on the bandwagon. I know it’s a couple months too late, but can I rave a little? This is so cute! Nam Ji-hyun is adorable, and I may like her in this more than Shopping King Louis (*gasp* yes… it’s possible, although her chemistry with Seo In-gook was arguably better). I like how unapologetically she pursues her objectives, whether it be in her career or in her personal life. After having periodically checked in with the waning comments of my fellow beanies as the drama progressed in real time, I know that my obsession with this drama will probably peter out as the romance becomes displaced with unnecessary murder-related subplots, but I’m really enjoying it in the meanwhile. Only 25 episodes more to go!

Manhole: I know it’s not even out yet, but if I’ve watched the teasers on loop for more than an hour, that’s got to count for something right? I want Jaejoong to be balls-to-the-wall crazy quirky like in the PPAP teaser, and I want UEE to channel her inner awesomeness. She was okay in Night Light, but to be honest, that drama was all over the place, and her character didn’t really have a focus or motivation, except for that mentor-love-jealousy line with Lee Yo-won. I think she’s best playing the cool haughty diva (e.g.: You’re Beautiful, Ho-gu’s Love, and parts of Ojakkyo Brothers) with a vulnerable core, so hopefully her character isn’t just sunshine and smiles like the drama promos suggest. I also hope the comedy is on point, because if it works, I think this could definitely be a project that would solidify Jaejoong’s status as a leading man.

Now I'm only watching Bride of the Water God. So far I'm entertained and the cute moments between the couple are the highlight. The love story is what has me hooked. I find the whole thing super-romantic in a classic way: how they are attracted to each other, they cannot be a couple but still end up spending time together and falling harder. It brings back feelings of my teenage years, maybe it is because it reminds me of youth romance and summer love stories that end after the holidays?...dunno, but the feels are intense. That kiss they shared made me melt. ???
I also tried Strongest deliveryman but not sure about this one. So, after Bride ends, the only thing I look forward to is Lee Jong Suk's new drama...why is September so far away?? ?

Seven Day Queen : such a drama, satisfying, gripping and lovely

The king loves : perhaps this is my catnip, I like a quiet interaction that gets rewarded rather than the loud one, especially with the girl who may don't know her situation. I feel like this drama really show what they want to show. The directing is really good and every frame almost looked full, beautiful and have a double meaning.
I don't think it's really good as but I felt that the story direction is clear, the drama is light and the characters are alive, they have their journey without sticking to the main protagonist or literally sticking but there is anticipation that they'll do something else.

Criminal Minds KR : disappointing, the suspense is rushed and I feel bad since I can't feel the drama with all the tragedy.
It's a kdrama in a nutshell, focus too much on feeling and how to make you cry and sad without understanding that the sequence of even and logic doesn't make sense.
Other kdrama take time for this so we can fully emerge to be sad but this drama doesn't, so it left with the disappointing feeling.

I survived SEVEN DAY QUEEN. Just barely. A tour de force that delivered epic catharsis, in no small part thanks to terrific performances, impeccable writing, sublime cinematography, and an incredible OST.

Chickachunga - you got me!!!!! I just started Forest of Secrets two days ago after being stunned by the great comments in Dramabeans and I am one of those who get to gloriously marathon it at will. Yippee!!! Four episodes in and I'm hooked. What's really fun for me (and I do it with other dramas too) is that I intersperse each episode with one viewing of Jo Seung-woo on youtube as Hedwig or just singing because I love love love these great actors and singers who can go both ways! Ok - now back to start episode 5. This comes at a perfect time to escape from some real life swirling around me. Bye!

Also - forgot to mention how much I loved Queen for Seven Days. Yes, for the love story and the brilliant final episode but most of all for how the writer and director honored true history by essentially telling the truth while still giving us viewers the possibility and fantasy for what we'd like to think would happen. This made me so happy I can't tell you because it is monstrously annoying when sageuks disavow true history instead of intelligently creating a way to tell the truth and ALSO satisfy us romance-hounds. (I'm looking at YOU, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds!!)

I just binged through the first six episodes of "School 2017" and I'm really enjoying it. I love the moody bromance, the tiny inklings of romance, the pursuit of dreams, and the mystery behind 'Student X'. It was funny to me though because I just came off of watching "City Hunter" for the first time and the justice fighting vigilante, who documents footage as evidence to expose corruption, felt happily familiar.

Goodbye to two stellar dramas: Seven Day Queen which I have been watching as it aired and Forest of Secrets which I caught up on in time for the last two episodes. Both gave us that winning combination of great writing, acting and direction. SDQ's cinematography and costume was also stunning and allowed us to understand the motivations of even the least sympathetic characters. FoS showed us how difficult it is to steer the honest course in our working lives and not bow to peer and superior pressures to conform.
I also finally finished Fight My Way which I thought ended well and I even went back to finish Doctor Stranger!
I recently watched and enjoyed Moorim School out of curiosity for it's low ratings and Lee Hyun-woo's silver hair so I am currently partway through a LHW retrospective.

BOTWG ugh..... agree the side actors are killing the mood.

CM waiting for the right time to get in again. Hoping it improves...

I will miss Seven Day Queen and Forest of Secrets. Both shows have been the highlight of my kdrama week. Both are well written and beautifully executed. I have been emotionally invested in both and sad that both have ended. I will definitely rewatch both shows in the future. Yes even 7DQ despite crying my heart out for that show weekly.

So now I will be left with light and breezy shows like School 2017 and Bride of the Water God. I definitely adore School 2017. TaeWoon and EunHo are just cute together. I want to see their relationship progress in the coming weeks. And Teacher Shim and the broken bromance between TW and DH.

For BotWG, I am interested in how they will resolve the romance and pending separation of HaBaek and SooAh. Also how the mystery of human involvement with the gods and brewing conflict between HuYe and the gods.

I put on hold Criminal Minds and may pick it up again this week.

Non-kdrama: Game of Thrones. ?

Bride of the water god: "I hate Krystal and Gong Myung in this, both in character and in acting. Instant mood-killers" JV. yeaaaah!!! and it amazes me that they give them a lot of screen time!!! And thanks to @lollypip I just keep looking at Krystal's weird arms' position.

Seven day queen: OMG, what a great drama! seriously. This one was like a rollercoaster from ep 1. And everything was so well done in every level, the acting, direction, wardrobe, scenery, writing... And final ep broke me into pieces. I really enjoyed to watch that little present in final ep, I think you'll know what I mean, we all wanted it .

Forest of secrets: I still have last two ep to watch but I bet they won't let down. This one to me is one of the best drama so far, and my top 3 list is having troubles after this one and 7DQ .

Reunited Worlds(9-10): I like this drama, feels light and cute, but I'm still waiting to move faster so they don't pile and crumble things up at the end.

The King Loves, I left on ep 2 and struggling to watch ep 3 which I start but never get to finish by whatever reason. IDK about this one.

Criminal minds. I liked ep 1 and 2 and hoping not to get dissapointed

Just finished Seven Day Queen, the only drama I allowed to wreck me. HAHAHA. It really hurt so good from day 1 to the end, and I am currently missing one of the best OTP in dramaland and of course, the stellar cast.

I am currently at FoS EP3 and my heart is starting to get twisted with every turns of the plot. Rooting for Yeo Jin!!! <3

Strongest Deliveryman was sooo good! It started off really strong & was incredibly funny. I can't wait for Dramabeans to recap it!

P.S I keep on imagining Yoon Shi-yoon playing the lead role. No offense to Go Kyung-pyo, who is good at this role, but Yoon Shi-yoon would have been SO GOOD. And now I can't get the image out of my head everytime I watch this drama, ugh!

seven Day Queen is now over ..... I'd rather let it break my heart to pieces again and again than say goodbye to this beautiful drama. Now one of my favorite. How can I watch other dramas without comparing it to this masterpiece???..... now I'm totally destroyed.

Thank you writer Choi Jin Young for a beautiful, beautiful love story. I will be looking forward to your next drama. Thank you director Lee Jung Sub for another great production. Thank you to the production crew and staff and all the supporting actors for a job well done. And now to the 3 leads.... words are not enough to thank you 3 for bringing to life a wonderful story. I hope to see all you 3 win an award come December.... it is well deserved. Fantastic performance.... one that I will never forget.

I'm in the throes of doing and thinking about quite a number of things that require so much thinking, that I'm not sure what I'm watching!!! LOL.

Let's see... I tried The Strongest Deliveryman and found it quirky good fun, mostly light and even funny with a surprising epilogue that brought on a change of tone. I'm halfway through the 2nd episode, and it seems that the interactions that will lead to the OTP and and 2nd lead pairings while not entirely new, are nevertheless slightly different and therefore gives me hope that this will be fresh and fun.

I'm still with The King Loves and hoping the Crown Prince gets to do more than just be a rather self-centred, spoilt kid. The baddies have executed plans and spied out stuff ie made quite a lot of headway but the good guys are rather out of it and are just enjoying life. Another episode like that and there might be more complaints, although it's nice to see the 3 leads together.

Reunited Worlds too should generally have reached 'compelling watch' status by now, but hasn't. It's good for a relaxing watch, but more plot movement will seriously improve the pace and interest level.

I do want to take on the Joseon X-Files,... but I'm not sure if I can. *grumble....grumble....back to all that other thinking* ?

I'm feeling the same way about Reunited Worlds like girlfriday, it's light and pleasant but the plot is very lacking. I keep asking myself where Yeo Jin Goo is going at this rate and get depressed when I think about it.

On the other hand though, I'm loving The King Loves. It's exceeding my expectations in every way and I can't wait for more! Already started rewatching the first few episodes and I keep discovering little details I've missed on the first time. The characterization and the plot are just DEABAK I'm loving every second of every episode! And actually it's refreshing to not have it be ALL about the romance for a change, 50/50 is best I think, some other plot and some romance.

Recently completed:
Chicago Typewriter (loved the set design for both Han Se-Joo's residence and the 1930's era)
Forest of Secrets (great drama highly recommend it)
The Best Hit (stuck it out for Yoon Shi-Yoo)
My Sassy Girl (since it was pre-produced, the final product didn't take advantage of this and was disappointing in some ways)

Paused : Fight My Way

On my to watch list: Solomon's Perjury, Woman of Dignity, Lookout

On the fence about starting: Suspicious Partner, Defendant, Rebel Thief Who Stole the People

Bride of the Water God: Enjoying the moments of Habaek and Soah together, whether being cute and bickering, or trying to come to terms with their feelings and the impending separation. Huye is getting more and more interesting. I'm very curious what happened 1200 years ago!!

The King Loves: The plot development seems a bit jumpy. I find that besides our main trio, I don't really like the other characters. Must suck for Won to grow up under such a king and queen. P.S. Are all of Crown Prince's shadow guards cute? LOL

Criminal Minds: Really loving this show!! They tackled the Reaper case in this remake!! Wasn't expecting this and I liked how they handled the pair of ep's this week since I remember how it all went down in the original series. Felt every moment!! Well done, team!

Attention, Love: Finally, a Taiwanese drama that I wanna see. It's kinda like the typical boy-girl romance set-up for now, but I like the leads and side characters. I'm looking forward to it having depth as we delve more into the backstories.

@javabeans and @girlfriday I wonder if I could suggest a new function/feature to the website and the 'what we are watching' feature. Would it be possible to have a voting button for beanies for the shows they are enjoying the most. I love reading through the piece, comments and the Open thread for recommendations, but call it a combination of my love for numbers and the sore lack of time I have experienced these last three years that has created a backlog of 10 years worth of 'to see' drama on my wish list; it would also be useful to have a list with the drama's that beanies are enjoying the most to help me prioritise what to see. Thanks to all the DB staff for the great work you do with the site :-)

I just finishing Suspicious Partner over the weekend. I loved it in the beginning but when the romance really started heating up is when I started to lose interest. I also really liked Nam Ji-hyun's character in the beginning but I wanted to strangle her by the end. My brother was like 'I could never be with someone like her' because she was so emotional which made her make some silly choices in the relationship. Ji Chang-Wook's character was constantly trying to talk things out with her, to make things work and be straight-forward while Nam Ji-hyun's character just put up huge walls for no comprehensible reason. The ending was also lacking. The conclusion to the murder plot felt rushed and unsatisfying, then the drama spent the remaining 30 min. on weird back-and-forth relationship stuff that made the relationship not feel very stable. The drama started out super adorable and I loved it but then I lost almost all interest towards the middle and end.

I just started watching both Bride of the Water God and Forest of Secrets over the weekend. Watched 1 episode of each.

FoS seems like it will be amazing and I am already blown away by everything. Acting, plot, directing, cinematography.

BotWG seems hmmmm... I can see potential and I like the general plot. I also like both Nam Joo-Hyuk and Shin Se-Kyung. But the execution seems a bit too cheesy and even embarrassing to me. Some of the sound effects the drama uses makes me cringe, and the side characters are extremely annoying. I've not met Krystal or Gong Myung yet but the secretary and servant of the 2-main character are almost unwatchable. I am eager to see the arrogant powerful god be brought to his knees by a human woman so I will keep giving it a go, I just wish the execution and the secondary actors were better.

Popping by this thread (late, sorry) to say what I've watched here and there while packing and moving continent yet again:
School 2017: So yeah, the Eun Ho annoyed me at first, but by episode 6 I'm sold on her cheerful character. Dae Hwi made me tear up (ah, the pressures of being No 1 in class, and having nothing else). And grumpy Mori is love. ??
The Best Hit: Finally managed to finish it after two weeks after its finale. Ok ending. And I missed Yoon Shi Yoon so I rewatched...
Flower Boy Next Door: And I laughed like a maniac again through ALL of it. One of the best casts I've seen. If you haven't seen it, you should watch it RIGHT NOW! (as editor Kim Seul Gi yells, in the most amazing way). ?

Everything @javabeans said about Father is Strange. I love that the characters are always so nuanced that you kind of have no choice but to root for everybody, because you can understand an issue or a challenge from every person's point of view. Even the Mi-young & Yoo-joo conflict gets dealt with really well. And though side characters may be side characters, they shine even in their own challenges.

I can't believe this drama is gonna be over soon. Being relatively new to the whole kdrama scene, this sincerely is the first one I'm feeling all too sad to part with. Because of its length, its been there for a while and you kind of get used to it as a constant; realizing your weekends won't be the same anymore is such a stark contrast. I just want to seize it and let it go on and on forever, but alas, that is not how it is.
