[Music and Dramas] OSTs are my siren call

Oh Hae-young Again

By @ohhaeyoung

The first time I watched a K-drama was in the summer of 2015 when I watched Secret Garden upon a friend’s recommendation. Secret Garden is a K-drama in which the OST is woven throughout the scenes in the most classic way, but I wasn’t aware of that yet since it was my first K-drama. I remember when I finished watching that I was slightly annoyed by the lines of “You Are My Everything” resounding in my head from that one peppy OST song. (Upon rewatching the drama, that song isn’t even as heavily featured as I had initially thought.)

But my overall attitude towards the music was how moved I had been by Hyun Bin’s rendition of “That Man,” which brought out the tears when I found out it was the actor himself who had performed the song. I know this was a fan favorite in the show’s OST, and it was used so well to frame the angst of the later episodes. The couple’s quieter, sensual moments were also well captured by “Here I Am” by 4men, which is a beautiful duet used in scenes that show the OTP in moments of both passion and restraint for each other.

Secret Garden, “That Man”

The songs played such an important role in how I reacted to the emotions being portrayed onscreen that I knew I had to create a K-drama playlist. As I listened to the entire OST after finishing Secret Garden, I marveled at the power of music even in a language I did not understand. The power that music holds in which we can feel for a few seconds exactly as we did the first few times we experienced the song—it’s able to bring back into our minds the moments we experienced in such a unique way.

OSTs are almost like the call of the siren from Greek mythology to me, as a few songs have been so entrancing that I have been convinced to watch a drama just because I happened to hear an OST from the drama. Instead of leading to death though, these songs lead to pure happiness and joy, known as binge-worthy K-dramas. The first time this happened to me was with “Go” by SALTNPAPER from the Cheese in the Trap OST.

Cheese in the Trap

I had started reading Dramabeans in January 2016 right when Cheese in the Trap was creating a buzz about how different it was and later how it crushed hearts and expectations in its second half. I read the article in which Dramabeans addressed the behind the scenes drama, but did that stop me from watching Cheese in the Trap after it had aired?

Not at all, because I had been enchanted by the mood that the song “Go” (both the Korean and English versions) evoked when I listened to the vocalist sing: “In love, you’re in love, we’re in love, oh my love.” I have to say, I was disappointed at how the entire song wasn’t used in the drama, and they just played a clip of it over and over instead.

Cheese in the Trap, “Go”

Another song that captured me before I had even watched the drama was the OST “Kangaroo” by Linus’ Blanket in Ho-gu’s Love. No one ever really talks about the OSTs from Ho-gu’s Love, but the peppiness of this song is so infectious and I was delighted to hear it used in just about every episode. And everyone pray for me, because the latest song to capture me like that is “Can You Hear My Heart” by Epik High, so there goes Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo into my watch queue, with me disregarding any cautionary messages that it is best to avoid said drama. The power of a good OST.

To this day, one of my favorite morning routine activities is listening to K-drama OSTs while doing my makeup before work. I almost always choose to listen to “What Is Love” by Seo Hyun-jin and Yoo Seung-woo. Every time I watched an episode of Oh Hae-young Again, I can’t explain the good mood that hearing this song put me in. I was ready to go along with Seo Hyun-jin’s Oh Hae-young in her trials of heartbreak and healing every time. I’ve rewatched a few dramas, and each time I’ve rewatched, without fail I tend to find an OST song that I had previously overlooked or ignored and then wonder how it was that I had ever overlooked such a gem. It’s kind of like finding hidden treasure!

Oh Hae-young Again, “If It Is You”

When I rewatched Oh Hae-young Again, I discovered the ballad “If It Is You” performed masterfully by Jung Seung-hwan. The heartache of the latter episodes was so well portrayed through this song that I think it even matched Ben’s “Just Like a Dream” in terms of setting the right emotional ambience. Music tastes are subjective, of course, but I’m just happy to have discovered Korean drama OSTs and the way they connect me to the dramas I’ve watched and the joy, heartache, and feeling of being in love that they somehow magically capture in one five-minute song.

I might just be the opposite. I tend to listen and love the osts of dramas I have never watched or would even ever watch. I don't tend to watch thrillers but Signal and Fores of Secrets have one of the best osts and there are several other shows that I have dropped but the good osts have stayed like Cheese in the trap.

Yay, thrilled to see Hogu's Love get a mention! It was one of the first dramas in which I really paid attention to the peppy, upbeat little sounds of the different soundtracks that's so prevalent in romcoms now, so it's particularly memorable to me. Wishing you best of luck in watching Moon Lovers! 😊

This is beautiful. I choose my shows by it's OST and still love Cheese in the trap (although I can't watch Goryeo again, I return to the songs regularly and think of Lee Jung-ki). I will try Hogu's love, thaks for the tip.

I like your essay so much! Esp the part about how OSTs can call you back to the emotions you were feeling as you watched. Sigh. Thank you, kdrama OSTs!

I loved the ost for Moon Lovers and rewatched the show, I think you won't find it as awful as you might fear. It was better for me the second time, with a solid grounding in the music.

Thank you! And yes music to me is so powerful, I sometimes still listen to songs that bring me back to how I felt during a particular season in my life. Recently Sandeul's "One More Step" from the My Shy Boss OST makes me remember what this past winter felt like!

That's good to hear about Moon Lovers...I mean I really enjoyed Cheese in the Trap despite all the bad reviews about the end. A lot of my enjoyment came from the incredible OSTs. Sometimes it's best to see for yourself :D

Well said, @ohhaeyoung! Being a newbie to K-dramas, I didn't understand how critical the OST was to creating the mood of the shows. Your essay and others here confirm that the music is a critical part of K-drama's magic.

I was unprepared for how much I would love the OST of Live Up To Your Name. *looks furtively at repeating LUTYN Spotify playlist*

The emotional recall these songs evoke is not unlike falling in love to specific soundtrack. I especially adore ALWAYS (Hyolyn), Not Gonna Wait (Park Jae-jung) and Dream or Reality (Car, the Garden). Oh, how these songs make me ache for Heo Im and Choi Yeon-Kyung!

Yes! Live Up to Your Name has one of the best OSTs out there! The sound, the melody, the lyrics ... it's simply AMAZING! I've been replaying CAR, THE GARDEN (카더가든) - Dream Or Reality's nonstop this past week! 😍

All 5 songs on the OST are great, but those 3 are also my favorites.

Not to mention, I really loved the scoring of the instrumentals in this past week's episodes :) Can't wait for the full ost to release!

Secret garden OSTs would be perhaps the BEST korean drama ALBUM ever. It had songs, which would make you cry your heart out, and some songs which would make you feel so happy. 'That woman ' by Baek JI young, was the first korean song i am able to sing really well. ' Reason OST' would make you cry so much, it just brings you tons of emotions. I would tate this drama OST 10/10

Even Another Oh hae young has great music..

Very nice. I have watched many of the dramas you mentioned and didn't notice those songs. I don't really rewatch dramas but I wonder if the same thing would happen to me! Perhaps for me, because of the language barrier, I rarely am significantly drawn to kdrama OSTs. I think the ones that have stuck out to me the most are the ones that we all know well (Almost Paradise, etc), the songs with at least a little english, and then this one, which I love, Fool by Kim Jong Kook from The Man Living in Our House. :) (It's so darn happy!!!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW_tQsPrjbk&index=4&list=PL5DyXpZ6iUiJOfiFwFsQuBzqQJrqqXvSa

Ohhh, @ohhaeyoung, you have mentioned some of my favorites! I think 4MEN's "Here I Am" made me cry more than 4 times ... and SALTNPAPER just oozes creativity ... I looped their "Satellite" song more times than I can count ツ ... and Ben's voice is simply unmistakable and I knew she was singing "Like Destiny" in My Sassy Girl's episode before the OST was out ...

And you are right, the way music connects us to the story and the feelings portrayed is simply magical ... Believe me, I have watched tons of Brazilian, Chinese and Spanish dramas ... yet none of them use music as the powerful enhancer & connector that it is ... And that's one of the main reasons why I love Korean dramas! ❤

What an excellent piece! I enjoy reading it.

A few years back when I was an avid watcher of US shows, in addition to pop songs, my playlist include songs I fell in love with while watching shows like Vampire Diaries, Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl, etc but now that I'm a full-blown K-drama addict, more than 90% of my playlist are K-drama OSTs (especially my fav genre: sad sappy love songs). And everytime I hear them, they bring me to the exact moment I fell in love with the song in the show. It evoke such strong emotions that sometimes I couldn't help but tear just by listening to them - this often happens when I listen to I Remember You/Hello Monster OST Remember by Dear Cloud or recently 7-Day Queen OST Dreaming by Fromm. Or it reminds me of a show's wasted potential - Uncontrollably Fond's Golden Love by Midnight Youth. Or made me smile and lift up my mood when I hear Task 38 OST Cool.

So thank you kdrama! In addition to making me a drama addict, I have also become an OST addict 😆

I guess I'm an OST addict too...every time I finish a drama I always go back and listen to the entire OST to assess which songs are with adding to my playlist :D

It's crazy to me how dramas are almost all able to have original soundtracks. In american tv shows, they play songs but those songs are usually not intentionally made for the show. So this was so different to me but also really exciting!

Because of the picture you chose, the Oh Hae-young one, I'm bound to comment something here!

I just adore this show so much that I like all the OST songs of it. I also like If it is you but the one I love the most is the song from the Black Skirts I think it's the ost no.7. I think it's a very bitter-sweet song.

I love how the Black Skirts song was used in the drama for sure, it added to the melancholic yet somehow sweet moments. You're so right about that!

Also yay, I get excited about anything OHYA ;)

I would go for most of the Kdrama OST's of KBS..... from the start "Full House" up to the present I love their OST's and even just the background music.... and I just noticed that I have KBS drama OST's on my playlists...
Boys Over Flower, Healer, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Sungkyuwan Scandal, Sweet Stranger and Me, and now Queen for Seven Days.... (the best hit also)...
And a little of other networks OST's: SBS's, Another Oh Young's...etc....
Legally purchased some so I could also used on my video making, hahaha...

I agree with you @ohhaeyoung. I only saw this post today and I can't believed I missed this. I envy you for being able to put into words such thoughts. Wow. 👏👏

Secret Garden was my first drama too. Yeah and Kim Won Bin singing That Man is reaaaally gold. For Moon Lovers, no matter what they say that this dramas has too many flaws, I just can't hate it though and that's because of the OST. Along with Can you hear my heart, I was enchanted by the voice of Lee Hi in My Love OST. I have this feeling that you'll not hate Moon Lovers too because of its OST so be free and don't hesitate to watch it soon. Hwaiting! 😊😊
