Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 16-22, 2017

I wouldn’t have initially pegged Witch’s Court to be such a hit right out of the starting gate (but I’m happy for Yoon Hyun-min—give this man more roles!), but the trend it started with last week continued upward this week, netting the show a super impressive 12.3% in its fourth episode. Granted, the competition isn’t much, with 20th Century Boy and Girl continuing to pull in low numbers, and Temperature of Love was also taken out of the running on Tuesday.

Over in the middle of the week, While You Were Sleeping finally broke double digits, but it sank back down into the (high) singles with its second set of episodes. Mad Dog saw a bit of a rise with its third episode only to drop down in its fourth, and Hospital Ship continues to coast on its decent numbers. How much hospital shipping can they possibly do in forty (40!) episodes?

This was a week of pre-emptions for certain shows, mostly affecting the weekend circuit—Thief-nom, Thief-nim was pre-empted for the entire weekend, while Man Who Sets the Table circumvented a Sunday pre-emption by airing both episodes on Saturday. SBS, meanwhile, is continuing their weird streak of airing four episodes on Saturday, and premiered its new show, Bravo My Life, to replace Sister is Alive. So far it’s not a runaway hit even when it has no competition in the later time slots—guess we’ll have to see how it fares once they up the makjang quotient.

All my favorites aren't doing so well. 20 century boy and girl, Go back couple and The Package. All of them have a light, breezy, slice of life feel.

I am getting second lead syndrome after a long time in Go back couple and what a surprise was Yoon Park's character in The Package. I wasn't expecting to like these shows at all but they are a pleasant surprise.

I'm having SLS too in Go Back Couple. It's been awhile actually. The last time I had SLS was in The King Loves, but Rin got the girl eventually. But this time, I'm just gonna enjoy their moments together and prepare myself for a heartbreak when the main leads back together again. :(

Me too! I actually like them paired with the second leads better. But, I am hoping the drama would provide us with something eventually that will make me root for them, other than them having the world's most adorable-est baby, I mean.

What about the second lead waiting 18 years for his love to have her adorable baby and divorce before making his move?

I totally support this idea 100%. But alas per typical kdrama rom-com rule, first lead is already predestined to end with our female lead.

It’s been a while since I’ve had SLS, but the show giving us glimpses of Jin Joon unknowingly making him flustered (despite his cool guy front) was just so adorable.

I second this! Lets hope the writer makes it happen.

I have almost dropped Go Back Couple. What is the purpose of this show? Same cliche overly-abused storyline and happy ending. Irony is in 1st min writer makes big statements about romantic fiction but overall he/she is following the same path.

I am still hoping the writer doesn't choose the same cliche storyline of making them happy together again because i would think that if they get together again they will divorce again. Well this is not why I am watching it. Its the SLS and the message the show is trying to give about living the present and not hurrying up in life.

Lol, ridiculously long comment incoming, but I think I have a case against you here!

So you think the writer will ultimately be subscribing to the typicality of a perfect happy ending by having the leads get together at the end? I don't think so.

What I think is compelling about this premise is that you essentially have a divorced couple who say "I wish I'd never met you" when they have a child and a history of precious memories in addition to all the bad stuff...and then they get their wish. So, for me, this will ultimately be a "be careful what you wish for" sort of scenario. Would you wish away the good things with someone, just to get rid of all the pain and regret?

It's also just kind of hilarious and interesting watching this couple get sent back to the day they first met and experienced "love at first sight" and literally now be incapable of living out the day the same way because they've just divorced. All the while, the show is pretty merciless about calling them out for abandoning their child by doing this, adding a new layer to everything because they have a responsibility to live out there lives the same way to achieve the same outcome. There's also a sense of loss there, since every moment they live differently, loses the memories (or version of the future?) that led them to that point. So for me, this show poses much more interesting questions than Manhole/Operation Proposal.

After all, nothing can take away what they've already experienced. Marriage already wasn't the happy ending for them because a perfect ending doesn't exist, but perhaps a better one does? I think this show is about the characters accepting that, not about them attaining a perfect happy ending now that they've had a chance to go back. I think what could be brave about this show, is that they will get the chance to choose the same fate again, even knowing they could fail and all won't be perfect.

Most importantly, though, the show is also doing a good job of displaying the characters gaining things through their new perspectives and experiencing some of the things they didn't because of their decision to grow up too fast when they married each other. The most compelling exploration so far, for both characters, are the regrets they have related to her deceased mother. So far, that focus on family and appreciating them while they're alive is really getting to me, as someone who almost lost someone dear. All in all, there's just more to this show than meets the eye.

Perhaps it's typical for you, but some stories are better told than others and avoid feeling typical for me simply because the themes explored are stronger and the character beats, more engaging. Some sources have this show at only 12 episodes too (please, let this be true), so there's a chance at tighter story-telling and less time investment, in this case.

Thankyou for ur comment- im glad of ur defense of the show. I actually found it atypical. Cause this time its not one but both leads travel back in time. and its not 1 but both of their actions and choices that will have consequences to their future. And that 'their wishes' actually came true.
I relate also to Jinjoo who was the one who appriecated her mum having lost her in the present and the first to remember their child and experienced the sense of loss - having the child become undone by going back to the past.
When Jinjoo called out their son's name and Ban do finally paused (from his excitement of young again, free again) and register about their son- I really felt the impact from those scenes.
As such the show doesnt feel cliche. The coming episodes is an extension of their wishes. For Ban Do to date his first love. And for Jin joo to have her experience if she didnt reject the handsome guy. I think it would let them seek the answer that is what they wish for as golden and as beautiful as they imagine. The answer would probably be nope it's not as rosy as they thought.

As jazz mentioned second lead syndrome is when the second lead is equally good or infact better than the main lead and ypi ship the second lead with the main lead more than both main leads ending up together. In Go back couple, SLS is stronger on both female and male side as it is what the premise is supposed to do to you too.

Glad I'm not alone. I consider the episode 3 epilogue to be the most romantic scene in the drama so far 😍

For everyone getting second lead syndrome, I get it, I do. But I'd also point out that the drama is making a pretty good argument for how the first flutters of love don't always = a happy ending, so isn't it a bit frivolous to fall for the second leads so easily? I mean, I love them as characters. They are actually fleshed out, with their own problems and have chemistry and genuinely sweet dynamics with the leads, but that doesn't mean they won't face exactly the same amount of strife down the line or that the love will last. The future brings its own set of problems. I find it interesting that people can so easily plan out a perfect happy ending with the second leads, when we've already seen how hard it was for the leads to secure that despite getting off to a great start in their marriage.

That said, I am enjoying seeing the leads get to know them and that they really have great relationship potential with them, because it will mean more when they choose fighting for a better version of their future instead. After all, I feel like this is more a chance for them to be young and explore again and perhaps figure out that making a different choice won't always mean a better ending for themselves, since life will bring struggles no matter what.

I kept getting drawn to this show like a moth to a flame. And I finally figured out it's because the show is absolutely hilarious. But maybe not how they intended.

The OTT conflict of the day...LOL It started with the 'scary' bus crash where they risked life and limb to enter a bus that was precariously perched over a cli....*wait for it* oh, it's only a 3' drop. Now gangster terrorists on the hospital ship? Seriously? Bahahaha.

My favorite writing quirk is the one where every time there's somebody that's about to die and needs immediate medical intervention, the leads rush into action....then stop to have a loooooooong heartfelt conversation about how the situation makes them feel. ROFL How they keep their malpractice insurance is beyond me.

And if the show can't get any more crazy-pants, now the female lead appears to be developing schizophrenia. One minute she's the strongest, most self assured woman in the world.... and then the next she's a quivering teary eyed mess until the male lead rescues her. LOL

I luff this show.

rooting for my favourites Because This Life Is Our First (can we please acronym this into BTLIOF or something!?), Buamdong and WYWS 💗 I must admit I'm not too surprised with the low ratings for 20th Century, it's such a heartwarming and breezy watch but at the same time might not have the strongest addictive quality that drives the viewer crazy for more as the rest of the shows. Am quite surprised by Black's ratings, 4.0% is actually pretty decent.

I'm also surprised that Black is doing well with its ratings. But after watching ep 1-2, I think this drama has wider range of viewers because it has its own humor though it's mostly dark humor, but still, whereas Save Me was creepy and dark, so not many people could take it. The power of actors also contribute to the ratings as Song Seung Heon is a veteran actor that has quite large number of fans.

Saimdang is not a total flop. True, the ratings decreased gradually until the end of episode, but considering this year's average ratings, it's not doing so bad. It's just that SBS thought they'd have high ratings with Lee Young Ae comeback, but it didn't get the result that they wanted. Saimdang had issue on pacing as it has 32 eps which is longer than usual and people just got bored at the end and they already knew that there's no hope for the leads to be together, so they just stopped watching it.

I am so happy that this life is our first is doing decently well. Like the numbers aren't remarkably high but they're still decent and they kind of fit the slow slightly laid-back and unconventional feel of the drama. It's the same with the numbers for 20th century boy and girl for me. Like the drama makes me soooo happy and I am not surprised it is not hitting those high numbers (television watchers like unnecessary drama after all), but the drama is so heart felt that I am so happy just to be able to watch it.

The Package was surprising for me because I wasn't expecting to love it, but now I do. That moment in episode 3 when the ahjumma was crying, and her husband was also crying because he knows she's ill and then we flash back to his wish in the church... let's just say I was a mess. I still am. It's definitely one of those dramas that creep up on you.

Buamdong revenge club is also soooo good. I still can't get over drunk Jung-hye (gah! She is so adorable. Hehehehehehehe), and I can definitely see why the numbers are a hit. Ra Mi Ran's SLAYING in the role! Her catwalking and putting on the airs of the rich madam in the opening of episode 2 was GOLD! I'm eagerly waiting for episode 3 and so immensely grateful that there are kind souls subbing it.

Mad Dog definitely picked up for me. The first two episodes were kind of all over the place, but when we entered episode 3 and you realize that there are so many things hidden beneath the surface, people who you thought were guilty and turned out not to be, innocent grandfathers who are masterminds, people who you thought were dead but are actually alive, well, let's just say it has me hooked! The numbers aren't soooo good, but they aren't as bad as the ratings some shows have fallen down to (*me crying as I remember Beautiful Mind).

It's kinda sad that revolutionary love dropped lower than last Sunday's numbers but I hope they pick up again (if that happens then it means Saturdays are a low for them and Sunday's where they get the pick up).

As for my one and only love: While You Were Sleeping, it finally beat Hospital Ship in ratings. Yessssssssss! I'm so breaking out the champagne and celebrating because bless and bravo!!!!

hmm Black is higher than Because This Life Is Our First, it's an interesting dynamic.

I like both dramas so I think both are fine on their own, it just this trend might show how romcom is faded in interest in this recent months. Perhaps it because there is too many good and popular romcom already, people have seen too much and it feels like a rehash over time so they have the romcom fatigue for this season.

or I just overanalyzing things

Ep 3-4 of go back spouses did show some progress. By the end of ep 4, a new mystery was introduced which may or may not have impacted jinjoo-bando's relationship.
The topic isnt new, but this drama is interesting nontheless. I havent seen a time travel drama where the main couple have a child together and both were thrown to the past. I want to see how the story unfolds, because the main couple do seem very much in love in the epilogue scenes. I wonder what went so wrong for them. And their child is so cute.

Dramas I'm watching: Black (ranks #1 for me atm), BTLIOF (#2). Absolutely need to watch these 2 every week. Never found SSH swoony in anything, but he's suddenly so fine in this drama :D he even looks damn good in a suit.

Had to put WYWS on hold. The pull just isn't enough for me to tune in every week, but I'm planning to marathon this perhaps once it ends.

Dropped hospital ship because the cases and approach to them are so unrealistic for me (I work in the medical field too).

I'm still undecided with mad dog. I watched the 1st 2 ep but WDH was missing in the 2nd ep. And where did my Dong cheol go? I miss him so much T-T his character now gets to my nerves..

By the way, based on my understanding Heads meant the later episodes, not the first two epi, since TNTN was pre-empted.

This drama isn't doing so poor, all previous SBS weekend slots from Our Gap-soon started with single digits and slowly climbed up. Even MBCs are struggling, only KBS is still doing well.

The force of My golden Life is strong but Man who set the table also did well this week.
Black hitting 4% is big news compared to most of TVN shows

Wed-Thu is tight fight. Every show has their own set of audience. Noone is yielding and losing customers.
20 is ManH.
Courtroom even deserve double digits rating?

This is our 1st the typical overrated drama has done well.

The package: i really enjoy it.. some people may not like it, but i love the focus and time spent on the actual touristy stuff.. the travalogue aspect of it.. i think i am watching cnblue guy first time as an actor.. and he is so goofy and nice in this role.. overall feel is nice.. isn't 2ish really good at JTBC?

2. Because it's my first life: crack

3. witch's courthouse: bwahahahaha..i loved her in bubblegum, i love her here.. i will always love him.. and cases of the week are just so attention grabbing because i am always waiting to figure out her gameplan..

4. 200 C b and g: while first 2 eps did nothing for me.. i really started liking the drama this week onwards..

5. While you were sleeping: can the production houses now agree that suzy is not a trp garner.. and LJS def is.. ( while UF hovered over 8 as soon as W came it peaked at 11 and lead the slot.. right now also.. i'd say LJS factor that they are netting same as hospital ship) .. However, on the acting side.. fun drama.. and i like how the director is handling suzy.. she fits in

6. mad dog: i wish i could like it.. but boring.. WDH on the other hand..scene stealer.. AND can i have a smart rom com with the WDH and the girl :) .. they are hot!!!. the mystery.. i don't care about.. the deaths i don't care about.. how justice will be served.. i don't care!..
YJT - how can a drama make YJT look so non attractive and old :(

7. revolutionary love: whatever!..like who cares.. i am surprised of all things JB is loving this show.. but then i haven't followed any of these stars.. to appreciate their and this opportunity's combination

********
- who is watching hospital ship?
- how to even get started on black? - is it good?
- go back couple? - did people find this good? i would def want to watch it if reviews are good..
- revenge club? any reviews? and i see they are netting in high numbers.. 5ish?

@alasecond—I'm watching Black and it's not "good" like Because This Is My First Life is good. I'm not watching for beautiful writing, acting and cinematography. Black ain't in the same league as BTIMFL. I'm watching for escapist fun and world-building. Some of the humor is juvenile—just what I need when real life is so serious.

Plus, Song Seung-heon is so attractive; it's amazing what a black suit can do for a person.

If you're curious, my recommendation is to wait until you can marathon at least the first three episodes.

as to Black: I nearly dropped the drama after first 2 episodes, but the 3rd one was really good. But if you have not started watching the drama yet I would probably recommend to wait for more episodes

I watch go back spouses and i like it. Imi, its a time travel drama done right(at least for now). Time travel is never logical but when you shove 2 divorcees from 2017 to 1999, interesting stuff will bound to happen. I mostly watch to see how this time travel will impact their present. I havent seen any other time travel drama where the main couple have a child in the present and are both thrown to the past. Interested to see how the story unfolds. Jinjoo's tears whenever she remembers her son is so sad. Huhu

yes, i was disappointed that they are not recapping this entertaining drama. I also even more upset that this drama gets subbed so much later. Ep3 and 4 still not subbed and its been almost a week already.
Is it me or anyone else feel the chemistry between the step son and the step mom. Morally it is so wrong, but why do feel the sizzling chemistry between characters when there is zero chance of them happening.

I think Temperature of Love's pre-emption on Tuesday probably helped Because This is Our First Life a bit. It might settle back in the 2% range this coming week.

Yay for Buam-dong Revenge Club.

Help - I've been watching good thief bad thief for months. There are only 4 more episodes. Is it cancelled? I am so into this show. - how can this happen?

While I like Temperature of Love, I don't see how the plot supports another 11(!) episodes. Unless they drastically change their portrayal of Jung Woo and it becomes a revenge drama, I would have been fine with ending it in another 4-6 episodes.

I dropped it after Episode 4 and even then I was asking "Why is this a 20/40 episode drama."

I'm a fan of the show and directing but even I am questioning this. It could end with another 2 hrs, not sure if this is going to end well with another 10hrs to go!

I love this drama, but this has been my question & worry from weeks ago. This writer's past drama, Doctors worked well especially in
second half because they were many cameos, since it was a medical drama.

My issue with Doctors is there was not enough story for the episode count. The whole grandma revenge scenario was horrible and dragged out too long. I like aspects of TofL and am skimming through the other story lines.

So happy for Buam-dong revenge club 💖💕!! It's doing well like Women of Dignity back then and I'm so proud of the wonderful ladies leading such shows.

But I guess all my favorites are doing well. I started Witch's Court on a whim. I didn't even bother looking at the promotionnal stuffs. I ran for my life as soon as I read "rape cases" 😅 but I am loving it now (Ma Yi Deum ❤).
Because This Life Is Our first 💗💞 also is pulling out great numbers. I couldn't be any more happy.
Just a litte bit sad for Go Back Spouses. Even if I don't like it, I love Jang Na Ra so I wanted it to do well. *sigh*

I love that Hospital Ship is confounding the ratings. Maybe the hardcore viewership is Geojedo Islanders and their friends/relatives, who tune in faithfully to see the gorgeous scenery?

Sigh, I feel like if awards shows and what not account for voting (from all over the world) These shows should be posted on Youtube or their site and account for the international viewership.
I really like the way WYWS is being shot, it's so beautiful in the dream scenes. The plot is also quite unpredictable and as someone who has been watching Kdrama for a long time, I really appreciate that.

So happy that all my fav shows had high ratings, finally viewers can see which show is actually have quality

-Even though Witch's court underated internationally but it came with whole package from story till acting, high quality drama, it jumped to 12% because TOL's preempted but they still lead Mon-Tue..

-BTLIOF decent rating very good drama but i only like the main couple story, They are so awkwardly good together..

-Avengers Social Club, underated, without much promo from TvN but turned the table for bringing the highest rating for TvN now.. 3 Ahjumma +1 handsome buy plotting revange, doesnt this sound very funny already?
I really thanks soompi sub team for subbing this gem..

-WYWS although it slightly higher from HS im still happy, and cannot wait to see my WooTak..

I'm currently watching BTLIOF, Witch's Court, WYWS, The Package, and Buamdong club. I'm in love of them all and seriously have to use up all of my free time to keep up with them ;(
Why do they have to release all the good dramas at the same time like this? This is so unfair for everyone, both the drama teams and the audience.

My favorites are :

1. Witch's Court: I am so happy that the ratings are soaring episode by episode. Though i did not like the female lead at first, but she kicked ass in the 4th episode, and i am so liking her now. She became a victim, but though her video did not get viral, but she knew the feeling of being a victim. What i loved her was her braveness to show the world what the jerk did, and i really applaud her for that. She is too smart and strong enough deal with many vicious criminals like him.

2. 20th century boy and girl : I had zero expectations from this drama, and it was i think the most unexcited project for me to watch, when it got announced. I thought it was be too makjang. But i have never been this wrong about a show.. What i love about this show is its simplicity. 3 girl friends in their mid-30's yet their bond is still strong and they are always together when one needs them. The guy is warm, sweet and kind and isnt cold jerk. The female lead is sweet and humble being an actress and really got the innocent image for the first time. I also love the flashbacks when they were in high school. 3 girls and 1 boy gives a definition of a kick-ass club. It deserves better and better ratings. Loving the show.

3. Mad dog : Liking the show , but sometimes i feel it is a bit slow. I loved the last case which they took, because finally we got to see kim min joon working alongside with mad dog. The twist at the end was like WOW. I think the airplane crash case is really going to bring out a lot more dirt. I love when the mad dog team teases min joon with their snicker remarks. It really gives out Lookout feeling. I just hope this ends really well. *i am still not over how lookout ended*

4. While you were sleeping : Woo-tak abs is the thing on my mind these days. Enough said. Loving the show.

5.Go back couple : This show can make you really want to go back to the past and undo everything you regret doing. This show really teaches a lot of things. Always cherish those who love you dearly, you dont know when you would lose them. Taking off time for your self and enjoy doing what you love to do. Go out and try to do different things. Make decisions wisely and not hastily. Enjoy your youth to the fullest. Coming to the characters, i really feel bad for both of the leads. Sad to see so much love between them during their past , yet how bitter and loveless they became at the end leading to divorce. I know the show is going to end, with both leads reuniting, but i wish they find themselves first, what they really want to do in their life, and with whom they can feel like they can spend their lives together with, not based on the looks , but personality wise. I am rooting for the second lead. His eyes are so mesmerizing .

5. Black : I forgot to include in the list.
My definition of Black is the FIRST OCN thriller drama which made me laugh so hard that my belly hurts so much from laughing.
The winner is the *short-legged grandpa* HAHAHA, i am still laughing how he address the senior detectives. Crazy dog and short legged grandpa wins this.
On a serious note, the show is good, but it has the potential to do much much better. It is a complicated puzzle which is very messy. Sometimes i cant follow up what is going on, because one minute they are dealing with some other case and the next minute another incident pops up. So many things going on each episode ,it makes you dizzy. The flow of the story is very choppy. I really wish the guy wasnt possessed by a grim reaper, It kind of feels off.

Alright I'm a little confused right now. I had a drama lump over the summer and just started recently to watch some dramas again. And now after reading the Ratings Report I found out that there are actually four Episodes per week for some dramas?! Well I'm sure that's something new. Before there were only two Episodes per week for every drama. So why did that change? If someone could tell me what this is about I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance^^

Those dramas with 4 episodes per week is actually 2 whole episodes cut in half. So ep 1 and ep 2 is actually EP1 in whole ,split by 30 min per part. So 32 episodes mean 16 episodes in real, and 40 episodes mean 20 episodes in real.

They have done to many shows because they need to air advertisements. They must have done this to get a sufficient break for ads.

Some networks are splitting the episodes into half-hour segments to get around advertising rules. There's no actual increase in the number of episodes, just episodes being halved. So a normally 16 episode drama might now have 32 episodes. A 20 episode drama might have 40 episodes etc.
