Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 23-29, 2017

With no new premieres this week, things have finally begun to settle down, though that MBC strike has thrown a wrench into some of the programming. At least it didn’t affect anything but the weekend dramas this week, but poor 20th Century Boy and Girl never stood a chance with the kind of airtime it’s been given. Ah well, fight the power!

While Witch’s Court maintained its dominance over the Monday-Tuesday slot with a high of 11.0%, the middle of the week is looking much more balanced all around, with While You Were Sleeping narrowly edging out the competition with an 8.9%. Following close behind was Hospital Ship at 8.4%, then Mad Dog at 5.7%.

Over on the weekend, Go Back Spouses isn’t necessarily losing viewership, but it’s not gaining much either. Meanwhile, The Package isn’t faring too well, and other cable shows like Black and Revolutionary Love continue to perform decently, but they aren’t bringing in winning numbers either. Those numbers seem to all be going to My Golden Life, which again surpassed that coveted 30.2% mark. How’s everyone enjoying that show, out of curiosity? Is this going to be (or is it already) Park Shi-hoo’s actual comeback?

It's obvious that viewers are not interested anymore, or maybe the change of presidents has something to do with working conditions, cause last time a drama performed well was Whisper back in May 😑😑

I know about Defendant, but Whisper was the last one with 20+ % on all the weekday slots. Its finale was 22%.

All the others since then have made max 14% with Ruler.

I'm not surprised that Witch’s Court took the first place, it's a really good drama. It's a pity that Seo Hyun Jin picked a drama with such a young mail lead, she looks like his aunt.

It's clearly exaggerate to say she looks like her aunt, when she isn't looking that old, and their age gap irl is not that much either. Yang Se-jong is not looking so babyface as well. It's not about pairing, it is the drama itself that needs to captivate viewers' attentions in order to gain high ratings.

Come on. Seo Hyun-jin does not look that old here. She is 32 and Yang Se-jong is going on 25. That's like the difference between Ji Chang-wook and Nam Ji-hyun in Suspicious Partner. At least he's in his mid 20s already. It could have been worse with something like Yeo Jin-goo and Lee Yeon-hee from Reunited Worlds which in it defence plays up the age difference, or Taecyeon and Kim So-Hyun from Let's Fight, Ghost/Bring it on Ghost. In my opinion, the age differences there were more glaring.

In their defence, KSH & Taec had amazing chemistry that the age gap wasn't too obvious unless you were constantly thinking about their real life ages while watching the drama. They inhabited their characters really well and it was actually a noona-donsaeng relationship in the second half.

She doesn't look like his aunt, also the drama mainly about an older woman falling in love with 7 years younger man, so it has to be a younger actor. The premises are appealing but the writing is not great, only the first 4 episodes were good.

Required fields are marked *

I think younger people (the demo that the advertisers apparently covet) probably watch more dramas online and it seems like a lot of dramas are geared to that audience. To get even 15% ratings these days shows need to attract a wider audience and interest the viewers enough for them to stay, of course.

Always that ’’Younger people must be watching it online and ahjummas don’t care for refreshing dramas’’ bogus argument when y’alls fave isn’t doing well ratings-wise. All the dramas are having pretty similar dramas and only Witch’s Court is hitting double ratings (deservedly). People are just not tuning into dramas..

I have to agree. The real reason is dramas aren't as good as they used to be. Lots of recycled stories that are predictable and the casting of some idols that just can't act.

Happy that Buamdong is the highest of tvN drama at the moment~ rise more unnies! Seems like our Avengers Subbers Team also was fast as eng sub of the epi 5 was already out too ❤

Only Witch's Court's rating got two digits for weekdays' slot. We probably thought it would be While You Were Sleeping which gets two digits but so far this drama maintained their ratings below 10%.

For weekend, looks like My Golden Life will keep 30% ++ onwards. I don't find it is anything that great that differ it from other weekend drama, it's just lucky to be put in this timeslot. Instead of Park Shi-hoo, I think it is Shin Hye-sun that received more recognition which probably good for her career as this drama is well received. Both Jung So-min and Ryu Hwayoung got their main lead roles not too long after FIS ended (for Jung, she got it while FIS was aired and her current drama isn't her first main lead role as well). This drama also isn't created so much buzz imo, unlike Father Is Strange.

I've always wondered why some actors never do weekend dramas. I mean if weekend dramas always have a good chance of hitting 30%, why don't actors who want to get a hit do them?

I know it's probably got to do with reaching out to the viewers of desired demographics and more but I thought it is also a good way to gain experience since there's a bigger cast and veterans to learn from. Won't it be useful for rookies and even for experienced actors who needs to their mojo back?

3

Required fields are marked *

Some actors started their career with weekend /daily drama to develop their skills and gain experiences.. I've been saying this from before that I wish rookies, young and mediocre actors to be more humble by building their skills in long drama. Even some senior actors such as Kim Hyun-joo and Lee Yu-ri probably are more comfortable to do weekend and daily drama, there are times these long drama give more chances for female characters as well. I also started to follow Lee Bo-young more after watched her weekend drama My Daughter Soo-young when she wasn't in my radar before. Doing weekend drama probably not an easy success, if their drama isn't hit, the chances for them to go for weekdays' drama probably lower, except if they have powerful agency. Shin Hye-sun imo did a good decision to do this drama, rather than doing some weekedays' drama which the success is unclear, it would better to do weekend drama which the success is guaranteed.

6

reply

Required fields are marked *

I've actually read an article in regards to that. Apparently first choice for the drama was indeed UEE but she turned it down. Shin Hye Sun was in the running but wasn't considered favorably as she is less popular than the usual idol lot. So her agency kept bugging the writer and production house for an audition repeatedly which finally landed her the role after one go. It goes to show how much harder it is for actors like Shin Hye Sun to land good projects even after exceptionally well received secondary roles in dramas like Secret Forest. She can act but idols attract more screaming fan girls. Weekend dramas also tend to attract less mainstream because these are usually filmed in 5-6 month period. That's a huge commitment. In my opinion, Shin Hye Sun doesn't need extra training in acting but she wasn't big enough to draw good scripts or popular mainstream projects. So, I am glad she was persistent in landing this project. Like you said, Lee Bo Young, Bae Doona, all of these people have at least one weekend drama that put them in the map. So, for actors from non-idol background, this is a good stepping stone.
As for the buzz, the index for popularity based on demographic is available and she has climbed up on that so I don't think this drama has zero buzz like some assume. It might not be at the top but it has good and respectable position trend wise.

30+ ahjumma characters+actors have more charm and are captivating. Rtaings reflect it pretty well. A rare hit for TVN this year.
Rest of the shows are big drag and at most time pass. I think this is one major reason for mediocre ratings of weekday shows. Weekend shows haven't seen drastic decrease in number of audience.

Only one week to hold on before Hospital Ship out of the way. With only MD and BRC, WYWS will highly likely to shot up in rating for its last four episodes. 👏👏

With back to back episodes of MWSTT last week and TNTN this week, I guess MBC is actually experimenting with SBS tactics but without the splitted episodes format and it works well I guess.

Before the show started most were complaining about how Suzys gonna ruin the drama. But the funny thing is she is doing decent and it's LJS and Park Hye Run who turned out to be underwhelming in their respective departments. They both need to reinvent themselves in their next work.

It kinda sucks that Temperature of Love took a hit when the crazy wave of premiers passed through. I'm glad that it's still doing well though but I would love to see it get some double digits again. Whilst I stopped watching it for quite some time now, Hospital Ship always surprises me with it's nos. Now Revolutionary Love is doing the same. Hey. Is it really that good though? I'm surprised by it's ratings - I couldn't even get past the first episode. I understand that my preferences are not the gold standard for a show, but:

Is the chaebol and birth secrets trope really popular enough to bring in such ratings? Or is it, as you say, the different approach? Or Park Shi Hoo? OR Shin Hye Sun?

That's the standard rating of KBS weekend timeslot. The story is kinda addicting and makjang, so that's what made more viewers tune in. If you see previous KBS weekend drama, they got their rating around 30% and more or maybe a little lower but still above 25%. Depends. I don't thnk this timeslot have ever suffered with low ratings -such as 20% below. Maybe they will keep increase as this drama is just at epi 17 and there are 33 ++ to go (I believe it will get extension at least by 2 epi or if KBS gets greedy later due to high rating, maybe it would be up 10 epi). I'm not saying that this show is not any good, but that's how it is in this timeslot. That's why Park Shi-hoo is doing this drama, he knew this is the easiest way to make his drama comeback and the best way to get his reputation back.

Mainly due to timeslot, not the quality drama per se. If this drama is on MBC or SBS, probably will suffer in the rating too. I don't think it is that so good quality maybe because I have watched many weekend and daily drama for the past several years, so not that invested because it is re-cycle and I can predict where it goes. But that's the charm of these drama 😊

I would say it's an easy watch, even though it's an old tropes but I enjoy it, I am surprised at the ratings too, father is strange which was a great drama and much better with many interesting characters didn't get those ratings. Guess birth secrets do catch Korean viewers more.

I'm enjoying My Golden Life a lot more than Father Is Strange. I actually tried to watch FIS after starting MGL because so many people praised it but I found it boring in comparison and dropped it.

This show is my current crack. I never watch 50 episode dramas but I wish I had more episodes to marathon.

MGL isn't doing anything new but the pacing is good, and Shin Hye-sun is amazing in her role. Some of the supporting actors are likeable too. I've been complaining a lot this year that too many actors are being given back to back lead roles in a short period of time, and this drama proves my point.

Uee was the original lead for this show and dropped out. That's allowed me to discover Shin Hye-sun who really is killing it. This is why other actors need to be given opportunities. I can't believe she's the same minor supporting role from She Was Pretty.

I've been watching FIS too and I'm almost on ep 40, but I don't really enjoy it.

1

I agree totally agree that MGL is a great watch. The first weekend drama I started watching was The Gentlemen of Wogleysu Tailor Shop. And I thought that was very good, until pass the 30 episode mark where I started to get bored. Then I watched Father Is Strange which I thought was much better than Tailor. But now I find MGL is even better than FIS!

When I watch an episode of FIS, I can't bear to watch a repeat of the episodes. But I can watch repeats of MGL easily. That's how good it is. It's an easy watch. The characters are all likeable and well played. And PSH is especially likeable and charming here. I did not care for him in Princess Man, but I have become a fan.

So in answer to Heads, it is still very enjoyable at episode 18 and I can't wait for new episodes every week. The family secret trope is given fresh handling here.

4

@grapes - I generally enjoy and agree with your comments, so if you like it, I'm inclined to think better of the show.

But birth secrets - man. That's kind of out of my range of preferences ^^

It's the plot, is just fast,
even if I actually want them to take it slower cause Ji an's plot is just way too fast than the other but it also has the charm of not having things on-hold.
It got everything you want from a weekend drama.
They just have all the scenes and it feels like a comfortable watch with heart-thumping mystery but you know it's gonna be well at the end, it's a weekend drama after all,

Umm, it started great, then went crazy and now is sane and enjoyable again with touches of makjang here and there. Yes, KBS slot is magic slot but MGL may break 40 at this rate before halfway mark and some of it is due to the fact that the story really is picking up and subverting troupes as promised now although it might go crazy again. Also, Shin Hye Sun is doing amazing and so is Park Shi Hoo now that his character has had some growth. The chemistry is building too. And its easy to pick up at any point. As for FIS, I never quite accepted the fauxcest with ease...That infamous staged kiss has scarred me for some reason and never truly recovered....it was super uncomfortable for me because they stretched it so far for so long. I enjoy MGL's central romance without any hesitation at this point. But if we compare overall writing, FIS was much, much better and more heartwarming.

FIS - the main strength for me because their parents do the real communication by talking, no unnecessary fighting & yelling - unlike many other parents in kdrama. Siblings also depend to each other. There are 5 type of romance / relationship and it included the older couple. This is a drama where most of the characters are likeable and relatable, so it is understandable if if this drama is also well-loved by international fans - it is kinda slice of life drama minus the point of the main premise. I think the last time this slot reached 40% was What Happened In My Family, which I really loved it. So let see if MGL can reach it too.

0

I've been watching My Golden Life kind of impatiently up until ep. 18, when I finally felt like the characters started to act like real human beings instead of cartoon characters. You could speed through the first 17 episodes and not miss too much. Hoping it will continue to get better from here.

That's logical of course, because I'm not Korean, but The Package is an amazing drama - so beautifully colored by personalities and stories - plus the scenery in France!!! I've walked those many steps at Mont St. Michel and the love story + visuals + individual stories of discoveries is pleasing my heart in every way. Mad Dog, Temperature of Love and Hospital Ship are all really good too. The drama slump of the summer seems to be over - thank goodness.

I agre with you with The Package ! They show new places of France and not only Paris. I like how we discover the different characters in the flashbacks in every episode. It's sad and funny in the same time.

I'm happy to see someone who like Hospital Ship too. There is some flows but I like the story with the patients on the islands and the families stories of the lead characters. The scenery is beautiful too. It's a little bit sad that the main couple is more lovey-dovey in the BTS than in the drama on the other hand :p

I think it's nice that they can have good ratings against WYWS that is preproduced, has buzz stars, written by a famous author...

BTIMFL is the best for me at the moment. It deserves more increase.

THE PACKAGE is following close behind because it’s also very good. It’s hilarious and light, yet deeply introspective at the same time. Totally my style. I don’t think the ratings are bad for cable. I enjoy Yoon Park so much in this.

WITCH’S COURT is good right now with the unusual heroin and I’m still interested in the mystery of the past unraveling. The cases of the week are starting to turn weak, but I’m happy for them with the ratings.

GO BACK COUPLE is enjoyable on all aspect except for the ex husband factor. I might have to drop it now knowing that they’re going to end up together at the end and that will just raise my blood pressure and health is the most important thing to me these days lol.

About My Golden Life, the writer is pretty smart. She is really taking all available Makjang troupes and then spinning them around 180 degrees, the pace also is super fast. I gave up and then picked up today because I am curious. And yes, it actually seems like Park Shi Hoo's comeback in a major way although Shin Hye Sun still is doing about 90% of the heavy lifting.

In my opinion, I'm actually enjoying my golden life ..it's been long since I've looked forward to finishing a 50 episode drama .As of now, theres nothing much annoying in the drama. It's very light, the sort of drama you can watch on a weekend to pass time .
Go back spouses which has its laugh out loud moments but at the same is very touching and emotional.
While you were sleeping is an exciting drama that I look forward during my weekdays after work. For the first time, I really appreciate Suzy s acting and LJS and Suzy s chemistry is really one to talk about.

Suzy exceeding expectations and doing the bare minimum is earning appreciation it seems. Suzy’s crying scenes are bad.. lucky her that Park Hye Ryun could write around Suzy’s flaws. At least Suzy’s acting is more bearable than LJS’s. He is so mediocre, overrated, overhyped and repetitive.

I never see anything negative about LJS, but I agree with your overhyped. It's probably because his physical type doesn't attract me, so I'm just seeing the acting and it comes up short for me. The one role I did like him in was I Hear Your Heart, but I also thought the role really suited him so it wasn't much of a stretch. Ah well, I do see the hype - when I was a girl that skinny, gangly almost-feminine look was more my thing, but now I'm older I like to think more about what's under the designer shirts ; )

I am smiling from ear to ear because Witch's court is going stronger in ratings episode by episode. This show deserves it and more! I love the pace of this drama. It is going exactly perfectly right. I am glad the cases they take are simple on the outside but very serious and thrilling in the courtroom. I mostly love the plot twist of the cases.

I am also very happy that Go back couple is getting constant ratings. I just love the tone of this show. It feels like i am really watching a very sweet romantic movie. Every episode is beautiful, funny and has so many moments which are heart wrenching. It connects to me on so many levels. Even though i am not married and neither have a child, and being in my 20's still i could relate it to both the time periods be it 1999 and 2017.

Yes, honestly if we didn't have scenes of them missing that incredibly cute child, as a mom I would not have believed it and have dropped it. It's realistic too in the different ways the 2 of them react gender-wise. She's immediately heartbroken but he's more into the gaining his college years back at first. Now it's starting to dawn on him what he's missing. I've seen so many broken marriages, and it's a cliche but also reality that men embrace their freedom first and fast but often are the first to want back to their old lives. So that part is ringing true to me with the husband.

Such a tragedy that no one at DB is recapping the gem, and ratings success, that is Buamdong Revenge Club. It's just the right amounts of funny/wacky and touching/emotional. All the unnies have such unique personalities and worldviews, and the chemistry among them is just lovely. I love all of them, but my heat hurts the most for Misook. Is it strange to call a 42 year old character my most precious smallest daughter that must be protected at all costs??? Because that's who she is! And I like, too, what the step son brings to their dynamic. Anyway, this is my first comment on this site about a drama in about a year, that's how much I love this drama and I just wanted to comment on how happy it makes me that it's doing so well :')

I think the reason for this continuous decline in ratings is that the K audience have lost patience/interest to watch long filler scenes/conflicts that usually have minimal effect in the actual plot. Perhaps the answer to this is to shorten their dramas to, maybe, 10-12 ep, like japanese dramas, so the midpoint and climax would arrive at a faster rate. That way, audience will lose no time tuning in. Look how successful shorter shows do? Game of thrones, for example, Stranger things. Can't think of a kdrama with 8-12 ep only.hmm

This was the actual reason why I dropped SWDBS no matter how adorable the main couple was. The filler scenes just got tiring..

There're are only a handful of shows with interesting filler scenes, Black only at the moment(because they're all damn hilarious!). Am only watch Black and BTLIOF. The latter is declining in my radar because one of the character's endless whining and screeching is starting to get annoying. Hmm

Black, OTOH, continues to be awesome. I can't wait to see our reaper start to develop feelings. That's be hella awesome char development :D

Putting the 2 dramas side by side, why is it that I can't sympathize with Se hee, as opposed to how I feel for Black, when both characters are equally insensitive and blunt? I guess I'm giving black an easy pass because he's not actually human, so he's experiencing human stuff for the 1st time. Se hee OTOH chooses to be insensitive deliberately.hmm

I'm so happy most of the dramas I'm avidly following are doing well! While You Were Sleeping has finally edged out Queen Ha Ji Won's long-running Hospital Ship and hooray for Witch's Court hitting double digits! Maybe its because of my profession but I love prosecutor-centric dramas -- both WYWS and WC are hitting the right spots for me, especially the moral dilemmas in their case of the week. I love 'em!

Dropped Revolutionary Love for now as Because This Life is Our First is a much, much, much better love story. Really loving the writing and the characters!

I just started Go Back Spouses and I can relate, so much! There are truly so many things you sacrifice once you get married and have kids, I'm glad the two have a chance to at least live out their regrets in their college age. I love Seo Jin, he is so cute and Jang Nara's grief over losing him cuts deep -- but I don't want the two exes to end up back together! I totally prefer her with Nam Gil! Also, sad about the ratings not really improving.

I'm currently watching Because this is my first life and my golden life. My reason is maybe different from other people, i know that weekend drama will have a good rating, so i decided to start watch my golden life, sometimes when i watch airing drama, i feel so down when the next day check the internet their rating is low. Hahha *my personal problem
I thought when the drama turns out bad, at least i see good rating (this doesn't make any sense tho)
And MGL turns out unexpectadly good. Haha. Im impress with the plot twist in each episodes, and how fast the phase.
I hope they will continue to impress the audience 😘😘😘

"Those numbers seem to all be going to My Golden Life, which again surpassed that coveted 30.2% mark. How’s everyone enjoying that show, out of curiosity? Is this going to be (or is it already) Park Shi-hoo’s actual comeback?"

I don't actually know why I'm still watching it. Honestly it's nothing out of the ordinary except maybe that Park Shi-hoo's character and his character's sister were brought up by this rich family and it has been ingrained into their being how rich people have to live their lives and the rules they have to follow. Their future marriages are more or less written in stone and they're okay with it because they don't know any better (they're nothing short of apathetic towards the whole business). Now you have Shi-hoo's character (and his character's sister as well) who meets this woman, first as a stranger, then as a sister then they're in cahoots together and he's starting to realize that he has feelings for her. Nothing out of the ordinare except maybe that whole apathetic behavior of them towards their whole planned lives.

I enjoy it. I watched the latest episode without subtitles and just from the acting in the final scene I had tears streaming down my cheeks.

Of all the above ,Am only actively watching My Golden life.Let me give you some of the reasons for its "surprising " success

1. Easy to watch-
Great cinematography, good looking actors, conflicts that get resolved quickly, overall light handling of its serious makjang subject matter

2.Surprisingly good acting-
Park Si Hoo ,I feel, has elevated the show tremendously from a normal watch. He is great in comic scenes and was also great in the serious scenes-the scene where he calls out shin Hye sun (Ji An) for not caring about her new family was so Good!Shin Hye Sun is a revelation and is getting deserved praise.I especially liked both the leads fathers as well, dealing with less than perfect spouses.

3.Music:
I like the ost of this drama a lot!!

4.Writing -
The writing is superb-The pacing on this show is perfect and it actually feels that there is a lot of story here rather than filler stuff.I had high hopes from this show since it was the writer's last weekend drama "My daughter seo young" that introduced me weekend dramas (do check it out-it is sensational!) and started watching it only for the writer.

5.Message:
I feel that the show gives a Good everyday message to everyone,be they temp workers or chaebols

Of the others,I have only watched Black and liked its first 2 eps!

I can agree with other things but great cinemagratophy? It's so terrible that I can't continue to watch. It's totally level of School 2017 and WC (WC better a bit) with too much light and lacking colorful.
