KBS in talks to air new drama from Strong Woman Do Bong-soon PD and writer duo

The PD and writer who gave us JTBC’s hit rom-com Strong Woman Do Bong-soon earlier this year is looking to collaborate again, although there’s a possibility that this new project will switch stations and head to KBS. There isn’t much information available about the show, and all that’s been released is that the story will be a melo involving men and women in their older, middle-aged years.

The show doesn’t even have a title yet, but I can see why there’s a lot of interest in the project at the outset: Strong Woman Do Bong-soon recorded some of the highest-ever ratings for JTBC, and across cable stations as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if JTBC is trying to woo this new drama behind the scenes, especially since writer Baek Mi-kyung penned two of the three highest-rated dramas for the station, and one right after the other at that. Her other project this year, Woman of Dignity, currently holds the ratings crown at JTBC.

Given that PD Lee Hyung-min and writer Baek Mi-kyung’s last project was—for the most part—a light-hearted rom-com between a woman with super-strength and a swoony computer game CEO, it might be difficult to imagine them doing a melo, but their credits show that they’ve had experience in a whole host of genres. A former KBS employee, PD Lee’s credits include youth romances like Orange Marmalade, rom-coms (Sang-doo! Let’s Go to School), and heavier melos like I’m Sorry, I Love You and Snow Queen. Before Do Bong-soon and Woman of Dignity, Baek Mi-kyung also wrote the well-received JTBC romance melo Beloved Eun-dong.

KBS is in negotiations to schedule the new as-yet-unnamed show, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Hopefully, we’ll hear more updates regarding this project soon, including an airdate.

Strong woman wasn't a show that i would anticipate any good drama from this writer or get excited for the her next project, but after Woman of Dignity i am looking forward for her melo, I hope it would be as good as woman of dignity, and choose a good cast.

The writing in that drama was one of its weakest points. Haven't seen anything else of hers, hopefully the new is better....

So true, the writing behind SWDBS was underwhelming to say the least. They could have cut out 3 episodes worth of stuff that wasn't the least germane to the story and added nothing to the quality of the drama. And added 3 episodes of understanding the use and limitation of her superstrength. Especially the "missing" Grandma - a story that could have added more depth to her growth, rather than the silly criminals/temple/fake yogi/hysterical office characters.

I loved loved loved and still love love love SWDBS even after every re-watch (lost count how many times that is already ㅎㅎ), but I do agree that the weak point in that drama was the poor writing of the plot and the side characters (mostly our villain... *spoiler: He basically want given a backstory and viewers were then forced to simply accept things and his actions as they were at face value without any depth), and if that is any indication, let’s hope and pray that the cast for this new production will be just as—or even stronger and better— than the cast of SWDBS, because the cast and the acting was the saving grace of SWDBS

The main cast for SWDBS was gold... i found myself getting bored with the side gangster villains (i nearly forwarded all their scenes). and the main villain was bad, like you said, why?? no depth to him. But, it is a light feel good drama so I guess that's the reason why

The side gangster villains were good and funny only to a certain point in the drama, I think I started fast-forwarding them in episode 10. For me, the only good "side plot" of the drama was the doppelgänger one, but again it was only because Kim Won Hae sunbaenim acted out the dual roles so well, he is such a versatile actor =D I villain, because of how flat of a character he was written to be, was the biggest disappointment for me, especially since the whole 'kidnapping' plot was one of the central conflicts of the show

Eun Dong was okay, I hated SWDBS, and couldn't get into Woman of Dignity, so I'll pass unless I hear really, really, really, great things.

I liked Eundong - the storyline was not really good written but it was full of powerful actors -which is a requirement for any melo romance. Woman of Dignity was good and I loved it - probably one of my top 10 drama this year.

I'll be looking forward to her new drama, but it depends on the casts. Since this is about older man and woman, I think we can expect solid actors.

The writing is one of the biggest lacking in SWDBS. While I enjoyed the drama in the beginning, I quickly lose interest midway and finished watching only for the sake of Park Hyung Sik. The drama was actually saved by the two leads - Park Bo Young and PHS and all their cuteness.

The way I see it, her formula is quite similar to Kim Eun Sook. Intriguing set-up but not much substance, full of fillers and the casts doing the heavy lifting. I guess this worked out quite well since both writers able to churn out hit after hit dramas.

Never watched "Beloved Eun Dong", so I have no idea how she fared in melo genre.

I loved the two leads in ‘Strong Woman’ but the ridiculous side characters and the ridiculous amount of screen time they got almost made me drop the drama

The only drama I've seen by both this writer and PD is Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Strong Woman was a horrible train-wreck of a show and most of that can be accredited to the extremely poor writing. I have heard great things about Woman of Dignity so maybe this writer just can't do comedies or light-hearted rom-coms so hearing this is a melo gives me hope it can be a well-written show.

I agree with many who have already said, the writing on this show was weak. The acting (and characters) were sweet and cute. But the kidnapping of potential brides? and the brutal mother, and the sub plot of the brother hiring someone to shoot at the half brother chaebol? (And if I got somethings wrong, sorry. But this is how I remember it playing out.) Too many strange, unnecessary subplots.

Just my opinion, I think SWDBS's success was due to the casts, rather than the writing. The directing was alright but not really shining.

This PD is really good creating chemistry between the cast, and creating those low-middle class athmosphere so well. Those one of the reason love his directing with Lee Kyung Hee. the writing is a different subject.

"The show doesn’t even have a title yet, but I can see why there’s a lot of interest in the project" - but like the writing sucked.

I really disliked SWDBS - but Beloved Eun Dong had the one of the worst endings I've seen in a k-melo (the last few episodes basically ruined the whole show for me) so definitely pass.

I'm not gonna lie, the first thought that crossed my mind was "Yikes!" The drama had so much potential writing wise but was wasted on unnecessary sub plots and an unsatisfactory villain. I wanted a bit of depth to be included to the fluff and balance everything. Might have to pass this drama

She wrote Strong Woman Do Bong-soon and Woman of Dignity?!? I was a fan and I didn't even know it. Adding it to my list of favorite writer along with Lee Soo-Yeon (Forest of Secrets writer <3 )

Reading some of the other comments, I have to agree that the villain was weak in SWDB but the cuteness of the show made me forget. :D
