Premiere Watch: 20th Century, Witch’s Court, This Life Is Our First, Mad Dog, Revenge Club, Go Back Spouses, Package, Black, Revolutionary Love

Goodbye drought, hello flood! Chuseok week is nearing its end and all the broadcasters are lining up their October dramas, and of course they all happen to be premiering in the same week. When it rains in dramaland, it really, really pours—we have NINE new shows coming at us in the next seven days, so get your calendars ready, because your watch list is about to get long. Let’s hope there are some keepers among them.

20th Century Boy and Girl

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: This comes from a junior writer on the Answer Me franchise, and has a tight-knit group of childhood friends at the center. These friends have grown older but have not grown up, which just appeals to me on a personal level. Add in a pair of childhood sweethearts who reunite as adults, and we should be in for a sweet, down-to-earth romance that’s hopefully as funny and relatable as it looks. I’m especially looking forward to the friendships, which should have a different feel from the twentysomething gangs of Age of Youth or Fight My Way, with problems specific to 35-year-olds and their careers. Also, this is Kim Ji-suk’s first romantic leading role after scene-stealing performances in Oh Hae-young Again and Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, so I’ve got my eye on this one to see how he fares.

Witch’s Court

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Legal drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m just banking on the cast for Witch’s Court, because a legal drama about rape victims doesn’t exactly sound pleasant on paper… but Yoon Hyun-min and Jung Ryeo-won! It’s such a classic setup too, with two prosecutors of completely opposite personalities and values forced to team up on these cases and overcome their differences. Heads will butt, fireworks will fly—at least that’s what I hope for, anyway. I loved Yoon Hyun-min so much as the straitlaced, uppity detective who bickered with Choi Jin-hyuk in Tunnel, and I’m hoping his by-the-book prosecutor character will have a similar vibe. He’ll be the warmer character in this pair, however, to Jung Ryeo-won’s cynical, ambitious prosecutor—and there ought to be plenty of opportunities for him to thaw her heart as they work together to bring these criminals down.

Because This Life Is Our First

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Cohabitation romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This drama has an odd setup, but then again, what cohabitation rom-com doesn’t? Homeless Jung So-min somehow ends up roommates with house-poor Lee Min-ki without having met in person to do the actual rental agreement, which will lead to all sorts of hilarity when she discovers that he’s a man, and that she’s met him before. They both seem like quirky characters, and the casting seems to really highlight their oddness, so I’m excited by the potentially hilarious and awkward romantic pairing. This drama also comes from a PD and a writer that I like—Let’s Eat’s PD Park Joon-hwa and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop’s writer Yoon Nan-joong—which puts it pretty high up on my watch list.

Mad Dog

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Crime thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Woo Do-hwan! The breakout star of OCN’s Rescue Me isn’t even the main draw of crime thriller Mad Dog—Yoo Ji-tae is no chopped liver, and here he’s set to play a charismatic anti-hero who gathers a team of investigators to take down large-scale insurance scammers. It’s just that Woo Do-hwan is actually still sizzling from his star-making turn in a drama that just wrapped, so my excitement level is a little skewed in his direction. I really hope this drama is good, but I think we have reason to believe that it will be, with an ensemble caper feel that evokes Police Unit 38 and Lookout. With a team of con artists and expert double-crossers, I won’t be able to trust anything anyone says, but isn’t that the fun?

Buam-dong Revenge Club

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Revenge drama, black comedy
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: At first I found it difficult to get a read on this drama from the initial teasers, because it seemed very serious and very dramatic, but it’s looking more and more like a black comedy with an unexpected sense of humor. The story follows three ajummas from very different walks of life who get together to form a revenge club, but the revenge they carry out is often petty and hapless. I’m sure they’ll work their way up to actual revenge against the people who have wronged them in serious ways, but I think the main draw of this drama is really the oddball friendship that forms between Ra Mi-ran, Lee Yo-won, and Myung Se-bin. I also expect good things from PD Kwon Seok-jang of Ex-Girlfriend Club, Miss Korea, Golden Time, and Pasta, especially with that cast.

Go Back Spouses

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Time-travel romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: PD Ha Byung-hoon of the hit web series The Sound of Your Heart is returning with the do-over comedy Go Back Spouses, which is all about getting a second chance to go back in time to your youth. Jang Nara is pretty much at the top of a very short list of actresses you could believably cast in this role, of a thirtysomething ajumma who “miraculously” finds herself back in her college-age body (how much do you want to bet that it took more makeup to make her look like a haggard 39-year-old baby mama?). Sohn Ho-joon is her beleaguered salaryman husband, and the two of them get to relive their glory days with all the advantages of hindsight. I mean, it’s 17 Again in drama form—what’s not to love?

The Package

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Travel
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Of all the new dramas, The Package is the biggest question mark for me. Is it a travelogue? A mystery? A romance? It’s probably all of the above, but there’s something about the idea of a group of strangers brought together by a package tour that does lend itself to an air of mystery. The show is a bit of a departure for writer Chun Sung-il of Chuno, Runaway Plan B, and Level 7 Civil Servant, which makes it a little harder to pin down, and I will admit that I’m wary because this show was pre-produced and waited a good long while to finally get a time slot, which just makes me wonder why. But maybe it will look so beautiful and picturesque and romantic that none of that will matter?

Black

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Supernatural thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: The PD of Voice and Liar Game is teaming up with the writer of God’s Gift–14 Days to tell the story of a grim reaper, so it’s probably a given that I’m going to check this drama out. Whether or not I stay will depend on how Song Seung-heon does as the reaper. The odds are not in his favor, but I’ve seen more of his dramas than you’d think. The premise is very cool though—a woman who can see death and a reaper who’s supposed to protect death will go against the rule of heaven and fight to save people’s lives. Plus, we can expect stylish and scary visuals from this director, which will set it apart from the rom-com-heavy pack.

Revolutionary Love

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m the most eager to check out Revolutionary Love among the new shows, because it’ll be the drama that tells us if Introverted Boss was a fluke for PD Song Hyun-wook, of Oh Hae-young Again and Marriage Not Dating fame, or if it was the beginning of a downward spiral. I do put most of the blame for Introverted Boss on the writer, because the directing was hilarious at times, but you can’t discount the fact that the production as a whole took a lot of missteps, including a sudden mid-show rewrite that did it no favors. But this is a new drama with a different writer, and it looks adorable. Siwon plays an undercover chaebol and Kang So-ra is basically a Candy heroine on steroids who works ALL of the part-time jobs, and I already can’t wait to watch him mess up her whole program with his immature antics.

Buamdong Revenge Club, Revolutionary Love, 20th Century Boy and Girl, and Because This Is My First Life. It seems like a lot of shows combined with the shows I'm already watching but I'm determined to watch every single one of them. Even if my blood turns to coffee.

I'd probably want to try Revolutionary Love because it's Kang Sora and the story is kinda relatable.

Buamdong Revenge Club looks nice especially it only has 12 episodes so there is less commitment but I'm afraid that it would not get subs.

With Witch's Courtroom, I'm afraid that it will just fail me so I would probably wait for the reviews first.

Other than that, I'd probably wait for the ratings if there would be surprise hits especially with The Package because it just feels like a drama-length commercial of some sort.

I'm mostly interested in Black, Revoltionary Love, The Package, and 20th Century Boys and Girls. Although I will likely check out Witch’s Courtroom, Mad Dog, and This Life Is Our First eventually too.

Black has a great PD and writer combo though. Voice and Liar Game are two of my favorite dramas in recent years. Just engaging throughout with minor flaws. And God's Gift was gripping and excellent until that final episode so I'm willing to give this writer another chance.

I feel like Black could be something really special if the PD and writer are firing on all cylinders.

So, I'm in a bit of pickle here. I'm writing off only two of them. But none of the rest replaces dramas that I'm currently watching. Never been a math wizard, but that doesn't add up doesn't it? HAHA. I guess I'll be reading instead of watching this time. Regardless, I hope they all do well and stay consistent!

I thought it was only 8! I wasn't able to account Buam-dong Revenge Club!

Now that girlfriday has said her piece on each drama, I feel like I should try each one and HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THAT? Has anyone discovered how to have more than 24 hours a day? Or an extra day in the week to catch up on all the dramas? If I jump through a manhole right now, am I gonna be able to watch more dramas?

Very much looking forward to 20th Century Boys and Girls for awesome girlfriends bonding and This Life Is Our First which seems to be without any hint of love triangles. Friends-to-lover romance and cohabitation hijinks, it will definitely be raining catnips this coming week!

Choi Woo-sik will forever be my adorable Hogu puppy, so I will definitely check out The Package for him even though he is not the lead. Siwon being a weird goofball? That is more like Mountain Dew mixed with Red Bull that will shift me to an overdrive of giddiness. Hopefully Dramabeans will recap the Revolutionary Love!

The chemistry in The Package seems good. And Mad Dog, Revenge Club, Go Back sounds good. I'm not sure about WC and 20th. I hope 20th don't too focus on main couple, let all friends share same screen size. And I am not sure about WC, which a legal drama, but romcom smell?

I'm going to try everything for at least first 4 epi except The Package and Black for now. Maybe I'll binge watch The Package if I want to see the beautiful scenery later. 😬

I love the fact that I can see Seo Hyun-jin, Han Ye-seul, Jung Ryeo-won on Monday-Tues, add Esom and Kim Ga-eun too in This Life is Our First. Wed-Thurs - Mad Dog the whole casts including Hong Soo-hyun whom I love to pieces and Buamdong Revenge Club ladies. Not to mention Jang Na-ra on my Friday- Saturday.

Forget about oppa, I'm more excited to see my eonnis for the whole week 😆

Nine new dramas to sample !?!?
I'm ready !
... no, I'm scared...
but still I'm ready !!
Hopefully my beanie friend will tell me where to look! :)
I'm pessimistic about the Package: the lead actors are not a good sign that this will be a good show (I did not find her convincing at all in Reunited World), and I hope the French elements won't be too clichés (although, good point for actually filming on location!). On a side note, I really dislike the music of the lead's restaurant in Temperature of love: picking up french lyrics doesn't necessarily mean good music (it's the music from "Hélène et les garçons", a terrible sitcom from the 90s!)!!

@DelSatu,

I'm really glad you mentioned this!

On a side note, I really dislike the music of the lead's restaurant in Temperature of love: picking up french lyrics doesn't necessarily mean good music (it's the music from "Hélène et les garçons", a terrible sitcom from the 90s!)!!

Re: Good Soup's muzak in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE, on my fan walI I posted all the songs that were identified by one of our francophone Beanies in the ep. 7/8 recap comments. For a few of them I was able to find lyrics.

Maybe we'll find out that these are all Crazy Mom's favorites, as I think that Jung-sun is too young to have been alive when they were current. Or maybe he heard them in utero. Yikes.

Barbara's “L’aigle noir” was one of the tracks by other artists that was not from that sitcom. I'd love to get your reading on it. I found the subtext disturbing, and I'm wondering if it were included because it was such a monumental hit -- or whether I'm supposed to read between the lines. If you're game, perhaps a discussion could happen in the next recap thread? That way all the TOL watchers could participate. ;-)

Merci beaucoup for any insights you might wish to share. I'm acutely aware that I may be oblivious to some clues due to my inability to understand French. I'm a German translator by training, so I can't help but wonder what I'm missing. ;-)

PS -- Ravel or Django Reinhardt would have been much classier. ;-)

Hi PakalanaPikake !
I'm impressed at beanies picking up the background music of some shows! I was annoyed by the sitcom music's pick, but "l'aigle noir" is indeed a very very famous song and Barbara as a very distintive voice. I don't think this song was picked in the drama for the content though (because TOL is absolutly not about rape and incest, and that subtext is quite subtle in the song anyway - Barbara herself had to explain the meaning for her song); it is more likely that they picked slow songs sang by female for a moody atmosphere!
I don't always have time to participate in recap threads but I'll definitly look up at what you beanies are saying on the matter! :)
PS: thumbs up for your alternative music choice!

Thank you, DelSatu, for clearing up the French subtext issue.

I try to find translations of Korean OSTs because lyrics are so often tailored to a drama's characters, the mood of the plot, etc. In OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN, Foley artist Park Do-kyung plays a recording of himself at the age of six singing what sounds like “Grandfather's Clock.” Surprise! It's really "Baek Il Mong" [Daydream], whose tune is the same, but whose lyrics deal with impermanence and wishing to have loved better, both of which are significant issues for Do-kyung.

Similarly, in VOICE, Goethe's poem “Erlkönig” (but neither Schubert's nor Beethoven's musical settings for it) supplied chilling subtext for the genesis of serial killer Mo Tae-gu. The predatory Erl-King (Alder King / King of the Fairies) steals a boy's soul. Mozart’s “Requiem Mass in D Minor” played during the bath tub scene with a copy of the poem nearby. The music parallels Mo Tae-gu's Biblical citations written in blood.

After finding such literary and musical surprises in earlier Kdramas, I am curious as to why these particular French-language pieces were used in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE. Slow female vocals to set the vibe works for me. I'm relieved to learn that Barbara's “L’aigle noir” was likely used to establish the moody emotional color of the scene and not to reference Crazy Mom's invasive kinkiness. (Although come to think of it, the Black Eagle is reminiscent of Zeus in his guise as the swan who had a private audience with Leda.)

I will put a pointer to this discussion in the next TOL recap. I appreciate your comments, and I think other viewers will, too. Thanks again!

Glad you liked the alternate music selections for Good Soup. Later I remembered Debussey and Satie as other possibilities. ;-)

I'm so ready for this flood! I'm mourning the loss of Age of Youth 2, Live Up to Your Name, and Girls Generation 1979 all at once and have nothing else I'm invested in. All three of those are favorites of the year for me, so I feel a bit bad that I haven't exactly been in a drought, but am still getting rewarded so soon with more potential crack. Mostly I'm just grateful though, because I really don't want to fall into the slump that seems to be infecting so many beanies, lol.

Everything looks and sounds good! But it's making me scared because it's been a long, bad drama drought.

I'm in the mood for light, fun and happy things, so I'm keeping my eye on Revolutionary Love (because who doesn't love a chaebol plot), Revenge Club (I hope this is going to be dramatically hilarious), and Because This Is My First Life (I loooove cohabitation hijinks). But the inertia to click on E1 and start is gonna be soooo bad.

My types are Revolutionary Love, This Life is Our First and 20th Century Boy and Girl. But then again, there is Jang Na-ra with a new drama... And Black sounds pretty awesome... And I want to see why everybody loves Woo Do-hwan so much (I just watched him in The Man Living in Our House, he seemed cool)... And I'm curious if Yonghwa got any better with his acting... Dammit! Why dramas, why? You are tearing me apart, dramas!

Revolutionary Love: I will check this out, but I wonder what is "revolutionary" about it?

IIRC, it's another title that is a play on someone's name -- I think the chaebol's. It was mentioned in one of the news items a while back.

The Package, huhm, seeing JB "21 oppa drama" article and this writer previous drama included there should make people wary a bit. lets hope the writer know what went wrong with her previous drama and improve here. it sound more slice to life drama more to me.
Black. well, i've a very sad and lonely grim reaper before. i hope son seung hoon is good. but i know hoolaboo with God Gift-14 days mishap ending, so wary level also noted.
revolutionary love, previous writer work was appreciated here in DB so i hope it will be nice and breezy. as long we have a lot of siwon meme's face. :p
20th century boy and girl. now this is sound like fight my way, i hope it has its own twist. i also want to know if reply series formula will be applied here. but please no more husband hunting twist.
witch courtroom a heavy setting and topic . might check it out to see how this heavy topic is handle.
go back spouses. this sound cute. for jang nara sake, i hope this one is better than One More Happy Ending.

Hmm... what I watch depends on what's available for streaming on DF and/or Viki, and so far it doesn't look like much. :\ Buam-dong Revenge Social Club is at the top of my list!

http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/10/everyone-is-a-kid-at-heart-for-20th-century-boy-and-girl/

MBC’s 20th Century Boy and Girl will premiere this coming Monday with a double-header, which means we’ll get episodes 1-4 on October 9.

I found this to be confusing. Help!

So will there actually be a double-header on Monday, and a single episode on Tuesday, for a total of three hours this week? (Or is the show not airing on Tuesday?)

I think you're right. I assumed the same: 2 hours on Monday and a regular one-hour episode on Tuesday.

I wonder if the show will have to change things with the schedule when the final episode gets near. Or leave it as is.

The show is not airing on 10 October (because of a football match IIRC), so the premiere 4 episodes (2 hours) are all airing on 9 October Monday. But it should resume the usual 1 hour on Monday, 1 hour on Tuesday the following week.

A light reminder that Jang Nara played Lee Yikyung's (guy withthe long hair) teacher in School 2017 only to play his friend 4 years later. Damn, I hate Jang Nara and her non-aging face

They all sound interesting so I'm going to try to check out all of them. I don't know how I'll get time for that.

I did a bit of research on what should be available on Viki/Dramafever/Kocowa:

20th Century Boy and Girl - Kocowa
Witch’s Courtroom - Viki/Kocowa
This Life Is Our First - Viki
Mad Dog - Viki
Buam-dong Revenge Club - ??
Go Back Spouses - ??
The Package - Dramafever
Black - ??
Revolutionary Love - Dramafever

Well bummer, Black was the one I was most interested in.

I don't understand why 20th Century Boy is on Kocowa, but not on Viki/Kocowa. Can someone please explain?
Thx for letting us know about the two on DF, and they didn't come up when I searched DF for them.
Nearly 4 weeks after Falsify ended and am still waiting for Viki to translate the last 11 episodes...

"I don't understand why 20th Century Boy is on Kocowa, but not on Viki/Kocowa. Can someone please explain?"

I want to know too. I have a feeling that it may get added on Viki after some time but it's just speculation right now, I have no proof.

"Thx for letting us know about the two on DF, and they didn't come up when I searched DF for them."
You're welcome! I found those on its "coming soon" page. Those 2 dramas already have the webpages set up and marked with "Only on DF." I'm interested in watching The Package so I'm glad it's available there.

"Nearly 4 weeks after Falsify ended and am still waiting for Viki to translate the last 11 episodes..."

I guess this is why Viki is introducing "Vikibot" to help subtitle. These subtitles are then open for volunteers to edit. Sigh I'm really apprehensive about Viki's future and volunteer base.

@Falsify & Guardian:
Both shows got a license on Viki after they finished airing so the interest to sub is pretty small. In this case, Viki should just have taken the subs from kocowa like they're already doing with some older shows they got through the deal.

@Vikibot:
So far vikibot is only for older shows and only translates the English subtitles into another language since there are no Korean subtitles the bot could work with.

Thanks for the clarification! I took a look through Viki discussions for a general idea of Vikibot and I saw a lot of rage tbh.. lol. I'm not a subber myself, so this type of clarification always helps.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm really hoping Buam-dong Revenge Club doesn't go the way of Argon (not being picked up anywhere). I'm happy to have more ways to watch dramas legally, but not if they limit what types of dramas are available...

Thanks for posting this. Part of my drama slump has been because of the licensing issues, so I'm glad to see that a couple of the shows I'm interested in are going to be on DF and Viki. Kind of sad that 20th Century Boy and Girl is on Kocowa, and I have a feeling that Buam-dong Revenge Club will be the next Argon.

20th Century Boy and Girl is on Viki, though. For the US Go Back Spouses will be available via Dramafever (stated on their FB page), everyone else can watch it on Viki. Since I am not located in the US I have to watch Witch's Court, Mad Dog & Black on one of those free sites.

"20th Century Boy and Girl is on Viki" Looks that way now, thanks for the updates everyone! FYI, Kocowa content on Viki would require a Viki Pass Plus.

Viki's Go Back Spouses is not licensed for North America (which is where I am, sorry for not specifying).

I will try out all the new shows with exception of 21century boys and girls, I don’t like the leads. Han ye seul acting is not that great her dramas always fall flat and Kim ji seul is so so in most dramas; he can either be really good or super annoying as a character. witch’s courtroom i will try the 1st two episodes if it doesn’t capture my attention then it’s going in the dramas to binge later bin. Mag Dog doesn’t sound too interesting but I will try at least 1 episode. All the others if properly sub I will give an least 4 episodes before dropping if I don’t like it enough to continue to the end. I’ve watched enough drama over the years so I know when to drop a show.
