Premiere Watch: 20th Century, Witch’s Court, This Life Is Our First, Mad Dog, Revenge Club, Go Back Spouses, Package, Black, Revolutionary Love

Goodbye drought, hello flood! Chuseok week is nearing its end and all the broadcasters are lining up their October dramas, and of course they all happen to be premiering in the same week. When it rains in dramaland, it really, really pours—we have NINE new shows coming at us in the next seven days, so get your calendars ready, because your watch list is about to get long. Let’s hope there are some keepers among them.

20th Century Boy and Girl

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: This comes from a junior writer on the Answer Me franchise, and has a tight-knit group of childhood friends at the center. These friends have grown older but have not grown up, which just appeals to me on a personal level. Add in a pair of childhood sweethearts who reunite as adults, and we should be in for a sweet, down-to-earth romance that’s hopefully as funny and relatable as it looks. I’m especially looking forward to the friendships, which should have a different feel from the twentysomething gangs of Age of Youth or Fight My Way, with problems specific to 35-year-olds and their careers. Also, this is Kim Ji-suk’s first romantic leading role after scene-stealing performances in Oh Hae-young Again and Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, so I’ve got my eye on this one to see how he fares.

Witch’s Court

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Legal drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m just banking on the cast for Witch’s Court, because a legal drama about rape victims doesn’t exactly sound pleasant on paper… but Yoon Hyun-min and Jung Ryeo-won! It’s such a classic setup too, with two prosecutors of completely opposite personalities and values forced to team up on these cases and overcome their differences. Heads will butt, fireworks will fly—at least that’s what I hope for, anyway. I loved Yoon Hyun-min so much as the straitlaced, uppity detective who bickered with Choi Jin-hyuk in Tunnel, and I’m hoping his by-the-book prosecutor character will have a similar vibe. He’ll be the warmer character in this pair, however, to Jung Ryeo-won’s cynical, ambitious prosecutor—and there ought to be plenty of opportunities for him to thaw her heart as they work together to bring these criminals down.

Because This Life Is Our First

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Cohabitation romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This drama has an odd setup, but then again, what cohabitation rom-com doesn’t? Homeless Jung So-min somehow ends up roommates with house-poor Lee Min-ki without having met in person to do the actual rental agreement, which will lead to all sorts of hilarity when she discovers that he’s a man, and that she’s met him before. They both seem like quirky characters, and the casting seems to really highlight their oddness, so I’m excited by the potentially hilarious and awkward romantic pairing. This drama also comes from a PD and a writer that I like—Let’s Eat’s PD Park Joon-hwa and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop’s writer Yoon Nan-joong—which puts it pretty high up on my watch list.

Mad Dog

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Crime thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Woo Do-hwan! The breakout star of OCN’s Rescue Me isn’t even the main draw of crime thriller Mad Dog—Yoo Ji-tae is no chopped liver, and here he’s set to play a charismatic anti-hero who gathers a team of investigators to take down large-scale insurance scammers. It’s just that Woo Do-hwan is actually still sizzling from his star-making turn in a drama that just wrapped, so my excitement level is a little skewed in his direction. I really hope this drama is good, but I think we have reason to believe that it will be, with an ensemble caper feel that evokes Police Unit 38 and Lookout. With a team of con artists and expert double-crossers, I won’t be able to trust anything anyone says, but isn’t that the fun?

Buam-dong Revenge Club

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Revenge drama, black comedy
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: At first I found it difficult to get a read on this drama from the initial teasers, because it seemed very serious and very dramatic, but it’s looking more and more like a black comedy with an unexpected sense of humor. The story follows three ajummas from very different walks of life who get together to form a revenge club, but the revenge they carry out is often petty and hapless. I’m sure they’ll work their way up to actual revenge against the people who have wronged them in serious ways, but I think the main draw of this drama is really the oddball friendship that forms between Ra Mi-ran, Lee Yo-won, and Myung Se-bin. I also expect good things from PD Kwon Seok-jang of Ex-Girlfriend Club, Miss Korea, Golden Time, and Pasta, especially with that cast.

Go Back Spouses

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Time-travel romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: PD Ha Byung-hoon of the hit web series The Sound of Your Heart is returning with the do-over comedy Go Back Spouses, which is all about getting a second chance to go back in time to your youth. Jang Nara is pretty much at the top of a very short list of actresses you could believably cast in this role, of a thirtysomething ajumma who “miraculously” finds herself back in her college-age body (how much do you want to bet that it took more makeup to make her look like a haggard 39-year-old baby mama?). Sohn Ho-joon is her beleaguered salaryman husband, and the two of them get to relive their glory days with all the advantages of hindsight. I mean, it’s 17 Again in drama form—what’s not to love?

The Package

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Travel
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Of all the new dramas, The Package is the biggest question mark for me. Is it a travelogue? A mystery? A romance? It’s probably all of the above, but there’s something about the idea of a group of strangers brought together by a package tour that does lend itself to an air of mystery. The show is a bit of a departure for writer Chun Sung-il of Chuno, Runaway Plan B, and Level 7 Civil Servant, which makes it a little harder to pin down, and I will admit that I’m wary because this show was pre-produced and waited a good long while to finally get a time slot, which just makes me wonder why. But maybe it will look so beautiful and picturesque and romantic that none of that will matter?

Black

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Supernatural thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: The PD of Voice and Liar Game is teaming up with the writer of God’s Gift–14 Days to tell the story of a grim reaper, so it’s probably a given that I’m going to check this drama out. Whether or not I stay will depend on how Song Seung-heon does as the reaper. The odds are not in his favor, but I’ve seen more of his dramas than you’d think. The premise is very cool though—a woman who can see death and a reaper who’s supposed to protect death will go against the rule of heaven and fight to save people’s lives. Plus, we can expect stylish and scary visuals from this director, which will set it apart from the rom-com-heavy pack.

Revolutionary Love

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m the most eager to check out Revolutionary Love among the new shows, because it’ll be the drama that tells us if Introverted Boss was a fluke for PD Song Hyun-wook, of Oh Hae-young Again and Marriage Not Dating fame, or if it was the beginning of a downward spiral. I do put most of the blame for Introverted Boss on the writer, because the directing was hilarious at times, but you can’t discount the fact that the production as a whole took a lot of missteps, including a sudden mid-show rewrite that did it no favors. But this is a new drama with a different writer, and it looks adorable. Siwon plays an undercover chaebol and Kang So-ra is basically a Candy heroine on steroids who works ALL of the part-time jobs, and I already can’t wait to watch him mess up her whole program with his immature antics.

From this list, there are 3 that I am definitely going to check out:
1. 20th Century Boy and Girl: I guess because I am in their age range, I could definitely relate to this. Plus, I have always loved Kim Ji Suk and seriously looking forward to watch him as a leading man.
2. Buam-Dong Revenge Club: The teasers are kinda mysterious so somehow it piques my curiosity.
3. Go Back Spouses: A reset button where you can go back to the time where you are only worried about exams? Count me in.

So many dramas, so little time!! :P Thank goodness for this write-up. I seriously forgot about a few shows. Ugh, there's only a couple not on my watchlist. >_< I doubt I'm going to be able to watch each premiere this week besides my current shows.

Feels like a lot of rom-coms on my plate this fall season. I'm in the mood for a good, exciting action thriller so I hope Mad Dog delivers. I'm gonna pass on Black for now.

I just took a closer look at the cast of REVOLUTIONARY LOVE, and am thrilled out of my shoes to see Choi Dae-chul, whom I have loved since his turn as Director Tak in FATED TO LOVE YOU, and another of my favorite funny ahjussis, Lee Han-wi. The thought of Siwon in the same show with this pair has me happy as a clam. ;-)

I'm awaiting eagerly for 20th Century, Revolutionary Love, Revenge Club and Mad Dog. I'll wait and see how are the reviews for Go Back Spouses and This Life is Our First. I love supernatural/fantasy and love the premise for Black but dislike the leads intensely....unless I read good reviews. I hope there a gems out of the bunch.

wow that's a lot! After looking at the list I am actually interested in all those with the romcoms (but I usually got bored midway in romcom so idk, let's see if I'll be there during their finale week!)

also Black. It looks interesting, but don't know if I'll be trying it. My currently watching list is empty right now so this flood is a gift... (or a curse?)

okay the drama gods want to kill me, but this is my spontaneous response on what I'll watch.

FOR SURE:
- Revolutionary Love... I mean a chance to see Si Won on my screen is something I'm going to take as soon as possible!! I am ready for the Shisus derp faces!

IN ALL LIKELIHOOD:
Go Back Spouses... because Jang Nara and Hai Tai! I mean Ho Jooniee! <3

Maybe:
Beumdong revenge club ... Ra Mi Ran is often my favourite thing in the world in any drama she is in

Chance: I am giving two dramas a chance to battle each other out:

This life is our first - I was really hyped about this drama because I love Lee Minki, BUT I don't know why but Jung So-min leaves me feeling cold, I never ever really get to like her characters in her dramas... so she's my big deterrent. But Lee Minki is life and I've really loved him since his Rainbow Romance stint.
vs
- 20th century boy and girl, hopefully it's a great vehicle for Kim Jisuk to become a full on male lead! and it looks cute so why not.

Binge watch later:

- Mad Dog: i loved Doohwan in Rescue Me, and I love crime thrillers but I think I want to rest a bit from all the crime and sad things.

- Witch's Courtroom: big fan of Jung ryeowon , and Yoon Hyun min was icing on the cake in Tunnel, but again rape cases? yeah I need to sit that one out for now.

- The Package ( Wooshik!! I missed you!) I feel like it's going to be a slow type of drama and I don't deal too well with that as I tend to drop those dramas fast if I have to wait for the next week, but if I binge theme I usually enjoy them.

- Black- This one is Mr. Hand Towel and Ms. Surprise Face and I don't know how I can handle that, though she might surprise me like Suzy has with her latest drama.

Interested to check out :
1. This Life Is Our First - I'm looking for Live Up replacement, I have no expectation for the lead couple but that might be a good thing since I won't feel angry if it's go wrong
2. Buam-dong Revenge Club - Lee Yo Won ! I have missed my Queen since QSD ended, no wait.. since 49 Days, but it can't be counted
3. Mad Dog - Kang Eonnie & Woo Do Hwan !

Might check it out but with only 50% chance :
1. Revolutionary Love
2. Black
3. 20th Century Boy and Girl
4. The Package

Not interested in :
1. Witch’s Courtroom
2. Go Back Spouses

I know I am in drama slump because I don't immediately recognize these new drama names, since I haven't been checking DB daily like I used to.

Thanks for the summary @girlfriday - some dramas looked potential and here I am finger-crossing that the drought will finally end!

In terms of interest:

1. This Life Is Our First & Revolutionary Love - The casts and the genre seemed like what I exactly need right now!

2. 20th Century Boy and Girl - Because I miss Kim Nam Gil already and Kim Ji Suk reminds me so much of him. I hope these mature leads will amp up the chemistry like Live Up To Your Name's OTP. I am not too familiar with the female lead's work but I wasn't too fond of Kim Ah Joong too before watching LUTYN and yet she aced it!

3.Witch's Courtroom & Mad Dog - I quite like the casts but will check out reviews of the first few episodes to see if the story is good enough to start.

4. Revenge Club & Go Back Spouses - Wasn't interested at all until I read the plot, might give it a try if the reviews are good.

5. Package & Black - Meh.

Ranking determined by level of excitement
1.Witch's Courtroom (Hyunmin~!!!!)
2.Mad Dog (it's Yoo Jitae!! And WooDooHwan!)
3.Black (this is the type of drama that i won't missed)
4.Buam-dong Revenge Club (the PD! Plus the black classic dress and hats of the girl, i'm sold)
5.This Life is Our First (i haven't seen LeeMinki for so long!! Though rom-com might not be my cup)

This list might make it's own plot twist later, but i'll just write it down so i can remember my own epilogue

Holy wow. That's a lot of dramas. I'm still not feeling it but I'm quite interested in Go Back Spouses and Buamdong Revenge Club. The Package's 12-episode length is tempting though. If I finish, it would be one bean for the year-end. Lol.

Of course, I'm watching Revolutionary Love for Siwon.

I'm still in drama slump 😫 and my attempt to cure it is at a sloth-speed progress😩. I have few completed dramas to watch including AOY and AOY2 (I just about to binge-watch both) and now I'm tempted to try watching ALL dramas that are premiering this week thanks to @girlfriday. Ottokke? 😣 I wanted to tick off my drama list but now I'm adding another handful 😝😝😝😝 I need to update my resume and do job-hunting because 💸💸💸 .
😓😓😓😓😓

We're getting heavy rain of dramas this week 🌧🌦🌧🌧⛈🌧⛈🌧🌧 so I hope I get to see atleast a d-rainbow (drama that like a 🌈).

Ugh too many premieres and I'm going to be out of town this weekend, so I'm pretty sure I won't be able to keep up and catch up. I also have a busy 30 days coming up too, so I'll probably only have time for one out of this great list. Horrible timing for me! Which one? which one?

20th Century Boy and Girl: yay for stories about ppl in their 30s. And I like Han Ye Seul.

Black: God's Gift writer- which is a plus and a minus. Interested in the savings lives premise. Not interested in the romance.

Buam-dong Revenge Club: highest on my radar so far. Drama featuring older ladies being badasses.

Go Back Spouses: Jang Nara. Time-travel hi-jinks. I foresee lots of nostalgia and warm feelings.

Mad Dog: interested in seeing an ensemble caper.

Revolutionary Love: Choi Si Won and his awesome comedic timing.

The Package: Could go for a human drama featuring an ensemble. Will possibly be a very touching drama.

This Life Is Our First: cohabitation hijinx!

Witch's Courtroom: don't feel like taking on this subject matter right now.

I am by far most excited for Revolutionary Love because of the incredibly lovely cast, and this will be writer Joo Hyun's 2nd work. Joo Hyun's first drama Ms Temper & Nam Jung Gi was an absolute joy to watch. Hopefully, Joo Hyun does not experience the sophomore slump.

Mad Dog, 20th Century Boy and Girl, Witch’s Courtroom & Buam-dong Revenge Club - I'm so excited to watch these dramas. I want to love them so badly, but based on my past experience, I have a feeling I'm gonna either like them or drop them.

Go Back Spouses - After watching Manhole, I'm now lowering my expectations for this drama. I like the leads and in general love time travel dramas so this drama just may stick.

Black & The Package - Dead before arrival. The leads and their notoriety have killed any hype that I've had for these dramas. Will only be checking them out if they receive an overall positive reaction.

I've never really been a fan of the cohabitation trope so This Life Is Our First is probably going to be pass for me unless it receives really good reviews.

Overall, gonna check out 6/9 of the new dramas. Holy smokes, that's a lot of new k-dramas all in one week.

Oh my God, is this the K-drama meta version of Nine: Nine Time Travels? Y'know what, considering the sheer amount of k-dramas about to premiere, I might just have to travel back in time nine times to watch all of these.

Sigh, Hermione's Time-Turner would be seriously useful right now.

It's Kim Ji Suk as the first lead (FINALLY!!!). So of course I have to watch it. This will be my favorite along with Because It's Our First Live.

I don't think I will watch for Mad Dog (even though Woo Doo Hwan in there but I still can't bear to watch it) and Witch Court. But maybe someday in the future, I will try it, but it's just not the right time now.

I'm not sure about The Package, Black, Go Back Spouses, Buamdong Revenge Club, and Revolutionary Love.

The Package premise is good. The story line is also mysterious, not much detail. So it makes me curious. But I am not sure about the lead. I mean it's Yong Hwa and Lee Yeon Hee. I dropped Reunited World because I couldn't stand of her acting. I will still try to watch it but I am not sure I will stay till the end.

Black also had a good premise but Go Ara and Song Seung Hoon? I am not sure about the acting once again. Go Ara disappointed me at Hwarang. Song Seung Heun? I watched him in My Princess but I am not really into his acting. I will try to watch it for the first four episodes. If it's bad then I will drop it too.

Revolutionary Love. I will watch it for Siwon and Kang Sora. Not much expectation but the teasers is funny. So I will try it too.

i like 20th century boy and girl as it tells for slightly different age group. the mid 30s. coming from an all girls boarding school, i get the long term friendship that was shared by jin jin, a reum and young shim. Me and my high school friends are like that too. if we meet, we are still act like teens to some extends. i think the idea is refreshing.
