Shin Se-kyung and Kim Rae-won up for romance drama Black Knight

Right on the heels of Bride of the Water God 2017, Shin Se-kyung may jump into another supernatural romance drama. Early on, Kim Rae-won’s (Doctors) name was attached to the project Black Knight, and if he does officially confirm, it’ll be his first foray into the genre.

Black Knight is about an innocent and pure man who takes on a dangerous fate for the woman he loves. Kim Rae-won is up for the role of the main character, who is a young successful businessman. He had a rough childhood, so he reached emotional and physical maturity at a young age. Despite being a pure romantic, he is scarily impassive at times, though he can also be gentlemanly and humorous. He went to high school in the United States, majored in physics, and graduated medical school before becoming an entrepreneur.

If Shin Se-kyung confirms, she’ll play a travel agent who works in the hotel reservations department but has never actually traveled abroad. She supports her maternal spinster aunt, but they’re extremely poor. In order to survive, she’s adopted a cheerful and optimistic attitude, but she feels a lonely weariness inside. I’m not quite sure where the supernatural aspect comes in, but earlier reports stated that their love story would span centuries.

It’ll be reunions all around if they both confirm. Shin Se-kyung had a minor role in one of Kim Rae-won’s early hits, the cute romance movie My Little Bride, where she played the best friend of the heroine, Moon Geun-young. In addition, Shin Se-kyung has worked with the writer for the project, Kim In-young, in the 2013 melodrama When a Man Loves. That drama was a hot mess, so that definitely decreases my enthusiasm for this upcoming drama. But with the Kim Rae-won charm, who knows? Maybe Black Knight will be the hit of the winter.

KBS’s Wednesday-Thursday drama Black Knight is set to premiere in December.

hmm... i liked Bride of the Water God but i will prefer another female lead for Kim Raewon. a real, seasoned, experienced actress. is it too ambitious to wish for like, Son Yejin?

It is right, it is too ambitious 😕 If they wanted and have budget to cast her (I believe she is among the top in chungmuro now or at least going there), they would have casted her first. Agree on seasoned and experienced actress, there are many seasoned actress in kdramaland - Gong Hyo-jin for example. Or they should've just upgraded Seo Ji-hye. It seems like they are looking for someone younger in 20s, there are many talented actresses as well.

She was always a film actress. But she also works in dramas from time to time. Same goes for KRW who has been a movie/tv actor from so many years.

Yay for Kim Rae-won! Nay for Shin Se-kyung; she's just so bland as an actress, imo. Admittedly, I haven't watched much of her projects, but from my own viewing experience and other people's comments, I'm sure she's still lacking that oomph and charm that I've always thought she was missing. I didn't watch When a Man Loves (and I'm gonna keep it that way), but can imagine the hot mess that it probably was. So honestly, the only good thing about this drama so far is Kim Rae-won, and I don't know how I feel about that.

Ditto! I'd been trying to put into words why I'm not a fan of hers and you described it well. I tried watching Bride and my problem was what you mentioned: she didn't have that likeability and charm that would have made me like/sympathize with her character - like she seemed bland? She was doing the usual mannerisms that I'd seen other heroines in romcoms do before but it just didn't work for her.

I mean, we can write about Korean dramas and culture without ever going to Korea, so why not?

I dread the prospect of another time-travelling drama (love story spanning centuries??? nooooo!!!!!). But the title at least sounds cool.

I am already dreading thinking about trying to force myself into watching this drama if these two are cast. When I see chemistry, even from pictures of two stars sometimes it's visible, but I can't see any of it from the photos above. I hope KRW drops the drama, or better SSK drops the drama. I have seen 'when the man loves', and it was awful to say the least. I don't get how she keeps getting called for these roles. :/

I don't think people are *hurt* over Shin Se-kyung. People just don't like the fact that she can't act.

She knows acting techniques and employs them well enough. What she can't seem to do is to feel the emotions her characters are experiencing, figure out nuances in their motivations, or, if she does do all that, she can't figure out how to physically express them for the viewers to see.

I think people are just disappointed that someone with such a bad acting record is continuously being cast over other, more talented actors.

Super agree with you. The funny thing is she's almost unemployable as korean industry does know her limitations. She gets mainly casted into dramas that NO OTHER actresses will take on. (The forgettable superhero drama that Lee Dong Wook did and BOTWG (nearly every A list actresses said no, largely due to NJH being lead) - Even SFD its because of the connections that got her into the drama and now unfortunately this one. The Man Loves is sooo bad, I dropped it after 6 eps which I already gave myself a pat in back for lasting so long. I love KRW, but my love for him cannot save the forseable tragic writing and miscasting so I will give this a miss as well. Its a downgrade for him after Punch and Doctors. One a critical hit and the other at least a ratings hit. Its kinda disappointing tbh if he does take it on.

Going off topic here but I'm curious. Why did the actresses avoid BOTWG because of NJH?

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't think she's "unemployable". I'm not a fan of her acting but objectively speaking, I think she's more attractive than the likes of Park Shin-hye and has got more star power than someone like Baek Jin-hee. She definitely has her advantage amongst the crop of 90-95ers, and she will continue to be in demand with the lack of A-list actresses in the post-85ers age bracket. She's not leading a female centric drama anytime soon and I think she's tolerable since she's just a sub-lead.

SSK looks very stiff close to her co star, unlike someone who is in love, there is no chemistry at all. if this drama has good chemistry like doctors (KRW and PSH), then it will be perfect. Even SSK has played with great actors like KRW, Song Seung Heon, Lee Dong Wook and Park Yoo Chun, but I still can not be a fan of SSK. Luckily SSK sometimes looks cute, so I'm not against her. It is unfortunate good drama but no chemistry.

I read (not sure if it's official) it has been reported that Seo Ji-hye has confirmed for second lead. If Kim Rae-won is also confirmed, maybe I'll check this drama despite of being underwhelming about Shin Se-kyung. She was quite alright in few drama, but that's it. For someone who has acted for long time as leading lady and has projects for almost every year, her acting skill is still like several years ago,not consistent and failed to leave good impression each time. It's true she is still young, ( I don't know why I often thought she is already in 31-32 y. o, there are times I think she looks like unni to Kim So-eun, only to realize it is supposed to be on the opposite as KSE is older by one year 😂😂)

Maybe time to try some villain role for a change, she can follow Kim Tae-hee's steps. KTH was impressive in Jang Ok Jung and Yong-pal, I mean she was really good in these two drama. It was much better than her villain role in Stairway to Heaven back to her debut days.

I think it's better for her to rest more for another few months. I miss her, but she still doesn't look fully recovered for live shooting.I don't want to hear she collapse during filming. 😕 Or maybe she can choose movie, pre-produced drama or short drama to re-start in which her schedule won't be so hectic.

But her reunion with Kim Rae-won would be so cute. Maybe next time in a better project. I don't trust this writer at all.

Yeah I think this writer is the problem... I do miss her a lot. I've been rewatching her dramas for few months now and now waiting for her movie to premiere. I wish it's not a movie since it takes looong time before it finally airs at the cinemas.

I actually would like to see Shin Se-kyung playing a heartless b*tch. Cutie-pie roles do not suit her - she doesn't have that vibe. Whatever she does, she seems like a lady and therefore does great in historical dramas. Noble and cold, not cheerful.
Anyway, I will watch anything she's in because I just like her regardless. I think in the future she will play bad-ass ahjummas)))

Conversely, I was really impressed with the writing on Doctors. IMHO, it deserved the ratings.

1) Finally, an adult (!) relationship. Two headstrong successful characters who had a sense of who they were and what they wanted. Not a poor, simpering, cutesy female justaposed with a rich, arrogant rich male.

2) Characters who treated their attraction in a mature way and related to each other honestly and directly. No noble idiocy where it seems that the expression of "love" is to keep secrets, make unwarranted assumptions and not trust each other.

3) They gave each other room to make mistakes and learn from them. The characters were self aware enough to learn for themselves (rather than through some all knowing friends/relatives) from these mistakes and then ADMIT THEM to each other.

4) Adult attraction (at last!). Getting tired of seemingly virginal 30 somethings (especially female) - portraying characters who seemingly never kissed, never openly expressed attraction, and seemingly without any self awareness of how they felt and what a relationship means. For goodness sakes, this isn't the early 20th century.

5) Difficult relationships with relatives, openly expressed and not seeming glossed over. Yeah, relatives can be difficult and adults, even related, may decide not to get along with each other.

I think the writer overturned many of the standard tired cliched tropes of k-drama rom-coms and yet managed to put out an intelligent and realistic drama.

Imagine that! A drama without 6 episodes of noble idiocy, bitchy ex girlfriends, overbearing ex boyfriends, shouted non-conversations, interfering parents, misunderstandings that could be cleared up with a 2 sentence (real) conversation.

Even the antagonists were not portrayed as "over the top" bad people. (well the political blackmail part was pretty extreme) To me, had they eliminated the embezzlement and blackmail/backstabbing portion and made it a realistic difference of mission - one to focus on "profit" for the long term prosperity of the hospital and the other as a "non profit" mission, it would have made the conflict a lot more of an exploration of the nature of health care in a sophisticated society.

I actually liked Doctors too, it had great characters and I quite frankly loved the teacher student dynamics. There wasn’t significant power imbalance because the writer made sure that the female lead is independent and not to be dragged by her wrist and the male character is sweet and considerate. That drama did deserve it’s ratings for its acting and the aspect that the characters weren’t typical at all. But the revenge plot was too draining and in the end it became too pointless. I watched it to the end because of the surgery scenes and chemistry.

Shin Se Kyung and Kim Rae Won would make a fun pair since their 'Little Bride' days. She did so well in BOTWG that Black Knight's PD/Writer are now offering her the role. Even if some denied her acting skills (hello, she won acting awards), at least give her more chances to prove she is worth the choice! Most viewers are not even familiar with her yet are misled by harsh critiques out to bring her down since BOTWG. How would you like it if say,you are constantly being passed over for a promotion by some jealous colleagues telling tales to your management who only credit your performance based on your co-workers' or supervisor's feedback? It's so heartbreaking to read all these harsh criticisms on her. Try being in her shoes & feel.Hugs, Divine Blessings & luck to SSK!🙏🏼

That's up to the Korean Entertainment Industry to decide who are considered veteran actresses/actors & whose acting skills are in question. For SSK to survive in this highly competitive environment & still being offer lead roles through the years means she is still bankable. There are lots of overrated actresses out there too. In show biz, luck is everything. It's not easy surviving in Korea, heard of 'Hell Chosun'? If the drama is deemed unconvincing, owing to the writer's controversiality, Kim Rae Won would have rejected the offer given his credentials as a good actor. To each her/his own, it's anyone's choice. I happened to find affinity with SSK as I have with a few others as well. Well, that that's my take. Just saying too.

Also I would to see what the writer has to offer since 'Man Who Loves' which she scripted to controversialize it, casting SSK in such bad light with the viewers then. Hope the write will 'atone' for the injustice she created. Till then.
