A fateful meeting between a Black Knight and the woman he’ll protect

KBS’s new fantasy romance Black Knight has released its first teaser, featuring a picturesque first meeting between leads Kim Rae-won (Doctors) and Shin Se-kyung (Bride of the Water God 2017). It looks like the drama’s foreign location shoots in Slovenia will pay off on the visual front: Lush fall landscapes are a major feature of the first teaser, which makes it feel like a cross between the autumn mood of On the Way to the Airport and the travelogue feel of The Package.

Black Knight will be a supernatural romance that spans two centuries, though, so perhaps it’ll differentiate itself on the fantasy front. It’s still a big mystery just what exactly a black knight is in this world, and whether the centuries-long love story involves immortals, reincarnated souls, or something entirely different. Kim Rae-won stars as the black knight, an entrepreneur who will face a dangerous fate for the woman he loves, and Shin Se-kyung is a woman who remains optimistic despite the hardships in her life.

The teaser opens on Kim Rae-won saying in voiceover, “I must find [her].” As he and Shin Se-kyung move through beautiful scenery just barely missing each other along the way, she says, “I want to leave everything behind—the life that surrounds me.” The copy reads, “A man trying to protect his love. A woman waiting for that love.” When they go ’round and ’round and finally meet each other, she asks who he is and he replies, “Your black knight.”

…Not that we know what that means or anything. But it’s Kim Rae-won, looking Gobliny and strutting through town wearing turtlenecks and fall coats, so my main takeaway from this teaser is: pretty. So, not a deep first impression, but not a particularly bad one either. Based on the first teaser, I’m actually hoping that they go for ardent and sad, which seems fitting for the season.

Black Knight comes from the writer-PD team behind Unkind Women and Equator Man, and it’s scheduled to follow Mad Dog on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning December 6.

As much as I love Kim Rae-won and it seems like cinematography is really amazing, also story being quite interesting but after watching Shin Se-kyung in BOTWG (first show I've seen her) I honestly don't know if I can do it again.

Agreed. I kind of get it that SSK has that aura where she needs saving and is a bit fragile and delicate...but I often wish they would cast someone else instead of her because she is so stiff and wooden. To be fair, I usually don't dig the characters she goes for anyway because they're so typical but at least it'll be good exposure for a lot of talented but underrated actresses.

I have seen her in BOTWG and Girl Who Sees Smells. BOTWG was a complete disaster but she was one of the best actors in the drama. I personally thought she did a good job in Girl Who Sees Smells and liked her in it. I've also heard she did a great job in The Great Queen Seondeok, 6 Flying Dragons and Tree With Deep Roots. I haven't seen any of those so can't comment. She definitely isn't the best actress out there but she certainly isn't the worst and would choose her over some other actresses.

She does better in sageuk. You should give Tree With Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons a try.

Yes, because she was a deaf and dumb in most of the show, so we did not have to hear her speak. (Tree with Deep Roots.) I beg to differ about Six Flying Dragons. I actually dropped that show because I could not stand her.

No. She was mute for a short while, not deaf. And totally not dumb. Did you even watch the show. And too bad you dropped SFD coz it's one of the best dramas to air on television.

Me too... I love Kim Rae-Won, and this may be his only drama I will not watch.
The thing about Kim Rae-Won, he always makes his leading ladies look fabulous - and therefore, he may end up saving her from criticism of her poor acting... I still cannot tolerate her.

On the previous thread, it was about Kim So-eun's new drama and now about Shin Se-kyung's new drama. They kinda look alike in certain angle, and I sometimes keep picturing KSE in SSK's roles and it's not helping at all. LOL

Anyway, the cinematography in this teaser looks gorgeous. I'm planning to check this out when it's started, for Kim Rae-won and Seo Ji-hye.

sometimes you gotta leave it to the lead man to bring out the best in her and kim rae won is certainly one who can. i find her presentable but feel she is mainly a visual rather than a truely great actress. kind of like ssh

This drama looks very pretty! Fantasy+Kim Rae Won+Cinematography are the reasons I will watch this show! Bad plot and bad acting (if at all) can not deter me from this combination!

Slovenia is beautiful and makes me wish that at least 50% of the drama was shot there if not entirely like Package. I'm watching that one largely for the beauty of France. Sometimes its nice to have a lot of pretty in a drama and those coats are just envy!

I actually like her as a actress, I believe a lot of times we blame it on acting, when it could be the writing (ex. Temperature of Love). I will watch this and see what happens.

Kim Rae-won is a solid actor no doubt about his accolades, but im not into Shin Se Kyung, did'nt watch Blademan simply because of her despite of Lee Dong Wook. Same with Bride of the Water God even that means ditching to see Nam Joo Hyuk on my screens.

So i guess this one will never be different for me.

Me toooo - Like a grown up Goblin - fully realized mature woman with scars meets Goblin (not that the real Goblin’s set-up was a problem for me - just that I seem to relate to this set-up a little more). Anyway, very excited about this one.

Why does it seem like Goblin from Head to Toe. I can't with this writer. The cinematography is beautiful but originality is lacking.Sigh I just wish we could have had it not seem like a time travel drama already.

This might not be a popular opinion when it comes to ssk but the girl receives more negativity than she deserves. There must be something about her getting more offers over the so called talented actresses out there. Maybe the casting directors see what we don't see,I can never tell.but I believe what the girl need is a well written script and a good director to bring her out. She was exceptionally good in tree with deep roots.

There are some actors out there that are naturally good in anything they are in. Then there are actors who can be good but need a talented director to bring out their skills. I think SSK is an ok actress but she is one who needs a good director to make her shine. She was not very good in BOTWG, but no one was good in that and she was sadly one of the best in the drama, but I think she did a good job in Girl Who Sees Smells.

Totally. I'm thinking some of the negativity are from people who has never seen her in anything and just jumping on the hate wagon.

She is a child model, actress, CF princess so she has been in the public eye for a very long time. She won't have a hard time getting roles in dramas.

She was good in Tree With Deep Roots but after that almost all of her performances are bad, she was decent in Girl Who Sees Smell and back to be good in Six Flying Dragons. She is inconsistent, and for someone who has been acting for a long time and already being a leading lady for around 8 years or more, it makes sense if she received the criticisms. If she isn't a leading lady, people won't care that much about her acting. She isn't the only one who is in this group anyway. I don't think casting any actor / actress in drama is based solely on his / her acting skill, otherwise we won't see the like of Suzy and many idols etc. Same goes to SSK. Although it would be good for people to see her every single of work before judging her, I also see no reason why all people have to do that just to evaluate her. A good actor can act with or without a full guidance from the director or with a bad script and she isn't even a rookie too, she is an experienced actress. She isn't the worst actress imo, especially in BOTWG team, but it is interesting how she received the most hatred for acting when there were also Nam Joo-hyuk and Krystal (who was only has monotone expression).

Writers (Kim Young-hyun and
Park Sang-yeon) of Queen Seon Deok, Tree with Deep Root and Six Flying Dragons worked with her in all 3 sageuks so it's safe to say that they liked her a lot.

I agree that her best role was in TWDR. Who wouldn't root for So-yi and SSK had that childlike innocent image to her that works well with her character.
She wasn't perfect but she had Han and Jang Hyuk. I loved their scenes together.

That show was blessed with top tier film actors like Han Suk-kyu and supporting actors like Baek Yoon-sik, Jo Jin-woong,Yoon Je-moon. Everyone elevated the script and make their parts memorable.
Song Joong-ki was at his best in Tree. Short but a very effective role. (I'm glad he turned down "Moon Embracing the Sun").

I don't follow her modern dramas and I avoid Suzy, Krystal etc so I have no complains haha.

Opps, my reply earlier was meant for the OP but don't know how it ended up here lol.

Lucky you. I think after TWDR, I had a good opinion about her only to be ruined by her projects after that. LOL. Even in sageuks, if she is working with other teams, maybe she won't be able to do as good as when she was in 3 project. Namoo or SSK herself probably wants to do more romcoms as she is still young, but she is an actress who seriously need the solid team from PD, writer and casts.

I found an interview of his agency's president and it was revealed that he was usually the one selling his artists to directors, so it is safe to say that SSK just have CONNECTIONS, i even saw some director and writer commenting about her acting on their private social media (instagram) and they were all bad

Only because of Kim Rae-Won, I am willing to endure watching Shin Se-Kyung again after having fed-up with her when I followed Yoo Ah-In in "Fashion King" and Song Seung-Heon in "When a man loves".
