Signal and Forest of Secrets in consideration for second seasons

It’s interesting to see how common news of second seasons are becoming, and I feel like cable stations are really spearheading the seasonal formats for Korean dramas. Out of all the reports regarding an additional season, though, tvN’s Signal and Forest of Secrets are the two that I’m most looking forward to seeing whether anything comes of it. There’s nothing confirmed other than the fact that production company Studio Dragon is considering the idea, but it’s almost inevitable that the news would create buzz at such an early stage.

Signal, which currently holds the third-highest ratings spot in cable television, was a critical and commercial success, featuring Jo Jin-woong (Entourage), Kim Hye-soo (A Special Lady), Lee Je-hoon (Tomorrow With You), and a magical walkie-talkie. The crime-thriller drama portrayed detectives who communicated across two decades to solve various crimes, and essentially change the course of history in the process. I have to admit, I’m already getting beyond excited at the prospect that tvN will finally continue the story where it left off on a cliffhanger in the first series. I need answers! And closure!

Fellow tvN crime drama Forest of Secrets was also critically acclaimed. The legal thriller, which involved an emotionless prosecutor and a warm-hearted detective who go about uncovering a far-reaching conspiracy in the prosecutor’s office, pulled in respectable ratings numbers in the high single digits for tvN, and was heaped with praise for its cinematic style and caliber. It also marked the return of Bae Doo-na (Tunnel) and Jo Seung-woo (God’s Gift–14 Days) to dramaland, which was cause for excitement in and of itself, and they didn’t disappoint. Also, I was so happy to see the show on Netflix a few days ago, and it’s now sitting in my to watch list for the winter holidays.

I’m trying to be optimistic that this news will materialize into official productions, although it’s far from a done deal. There are a lot of stars that have to align, from the directors and writers to the actors that made these shows great. I’ll just have to start praying to the drama gods early, I guess. Anyone with me?

There’s no word on when Signal 2 would air, but a rep from Studio Dragon mentioned a tentative air date as early as late 2018 for a second season of Forest of Secrets. Let’s hope we hear something more concrete soon!

I would so jump for joy if this was confirmed!

But then again, we've heard it all before, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt and little bit of optimism that it FINALLY happens someday for real. And with the same cast please, no re-boots or spin-offs *crosses fingers til confirmation

If they can keep the quality of writing for Forest of Secrets and the two leads, please bring it on! I've told friends who don't watch kdramas that it's now on Netflix and please try it!

Yesssss to both! Two of my favorite dramas of the last couple of years (although I admit I struggled until the middle of FoS, but then it picked up).
Let's hope for a confirmation soon.

Yes for this news, but the whole team for season 1 must do the season 2 as well, especially the writer and PD and the main casts of each drama. Writers for both drama are currently busy to finish script for other drama.

And tvN, I also want season 2 of Buamdong Revenge Club next year!

@seralovestteobokki Second season of Buamdong Revenge Club would be awesome, i was so upset when i found out that there will be only 12 episodes of this drama, and this kind of drama is totally perfect for a second season. We can only dream.

Agree with "whole team for season 1 must do the season 2 ", I loved those 2 dramas, my only fear is that now I have very high expectations, but if it's exactly the same teams I'll be reassured :)

I saw the news about Signal but I thought Forest of Secrets was still a pipe dream as the writer seemed to have moved on from it - without her I'd be unhappy with a 2nd season because her work was simply phenomenal.

Actually, pic above looks like it's all about the writer anyway - Jo Jin-Woong also starred in her Bluebeard!

Bluebeard has a different writer apparently, despite the same name. Forest of Secrets is her debut and as someone said above, it is phenomenal.

Unfortunately, we can't have Yoo Jae-Myang in S2. His character and performance is totally up there with JWS and BDN.

I hadn't realised - IMBD have confused the two into a single IMBD page which hasn't been corrected.

On the plus side, an article elsewhere does say the writer will be back.

Oh, if this is the case then it’s difficult for me to think that FOS will live up to expectations created by the first season. Because of the great writing, great director(s), actors and actresses, that show is just flawless. I give respectable amount of credits to the writer of the first ss.

I'm so pumped with the news that FoS might have a season 2, please make it happen! I want to see Shi Mok's smile in every ep because woww his smile is sooo😍😍😍. I thought that in FoS, they didn't give us Yeo Jin's background story as it wasn't relevant to the case, but if there's season 2 I would love to see a glimpse of her background story without it over dominating the drama. And I would love to see Seo Dong Jae still being an a**

WAAAHHH...!! Two of my favourite dramas of all time are getting a season 2! Has Christmas come early for all the nice beanies? I'll be so excited if they can get the exact same writer, director, actors, and production team for both projects. No one should be replacing anyone. I don't think I'll be able to accept any random swap-over. If they're busy with current projects, I'm even willing to wait. So take your time and get all your ducks in line, TvN!

YESSSSSSSSS Forest of Secrets!!! But only if the second season lives up to the first season. I love this genre of shows but I feel like very few Korean dramas that foray into the realm of crime/legal thrillers rarely live up to standards in comparison to how well romcoms or family dramas are written.

1000% agreed. Most of them have plot holes the size of craters and people acting irrationally + weird pacing. It's sad because the trailers always look so promising 🙁

I wish the second season is the continuation of the story from the first season not the spin-off ala Bad Guys (the casting kinda comfort me, but I still disappointed a bit)!
What we devoted fans can do is keep praying for the original cast and crew to come back and answer our prayer!

I enjoy Signal more than Forest of Secret. With FoS, i don't feel like watching a korean drama. It's clever and very well done, but there's lack of warm in it which is a signature of k-drama. Ensemble cast of Signal are also better than FoS. You can't get any better with Lee Je-hoon, Kim Hye Soo and Jo Jin woon.

LJH somehow lacks that very warmth factor in almost everything I've seen him in to the point that he could be a factor for not watching. Sorry to LJH fans.

FOS might come across as cold but the warmth is beneath the skin that gears up audience emotion in many unpredictable ways, just look at how audience responded so strongly to the development of prosecutors Eun-Soo and Yoon.

Adding another character from the past who intersects with the other three would be great or even one from the future. I like the past best though.

SIGNAL SEASON 2! Please! But only with the same cast!

Signal for sure since they almost certainly ended the series with a fair number of unresolved questions and a foreshadowing of more to come.

Forest of Secrets is a bit more of a puzzle, to me. It would be great to see the cast of characters but the original story had its origins many years and decades in the making. So creating a whole new drama and integrating it with the first season seems difficult without making it somewhat procedural and/or tangential to the lives of the team.

Sequels tend to disappoint so I am cautiously optimistic.
How about a new story with same cast for Secret Forest.
For Signal, there were enough loose ends to tie. So, they could go the route of traditional sequel. Secret Forest tied up loose ends neatly, bad guys sometimes slip through the loop holes of law. You can try but sometimes you can't beat them properly. I am happy. I don't want a forced come back here unless they have a excellent script. Also, yes I need all cast members back for both shows.

Getting my hopes up!! We definitely need a sequel for Signal with the ending we got. I think I'm satisfied with how FoS ended, so I'm satisfied with not having a sequel. I'm actually afraid of the sequel diluting that awesomeness.

I feel that the story of Forest of Secrets is already wrapped. I'm not a fan, so I'll probably not watch season 2. It make sense for Signal to get season 2, but the time fantasy will probably get scrapped off. That would be a shame because what made Signal meaningful was because these cases were based on real cold cases of South Korea.

What needs a season 2 is Circle! That ending is a true cliffhanger.

I'm excited and a little nervous for FoS season 2. JSW doesn't seem to be the type to shoot 1drama after another and would rather go on hiatus for years. I hope accepts it again >.<
