Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 11-17, 2017

Is it me, or does it seem like there are a lot of dramas airing at the moment? I’m not keeping up with a lot of them, but it sure seems like there are a lot of timeslots.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, the ratings race is holding steady among the three broadcast shows; it seems they’re trading a few points back and forth between them, so it’s yet to be seen if one will pull ahead of the rest, like we’re seeing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There, we have Black Knight picking up steam and pulling alongside Nothing to Lose, which has been the leader till now. I expect they’ll both retain their audiences, since they’re quite different stories, one being a moody fantasy melodrama and the other a light legal procedural with romance elements. It’s too bad for the fantasy rom-com I’m Not a Robot, although those sad numbers don’t make me love the show any less.

On weekends, My Golden Life finally broke that elusive 40% ratings barrier last weekend, so it’ll be interesting to see if it can continue to pull in those heavy numbers (it’s usually Sunday’s rating that ticks up). It’s not that crazy for a weekend family drama to hit 30% these days, but 40% is pretty impressive. And with nearly twenty episodes still left to go, it has a long time in which to build more momentum.

Very happy for Jugglers's increase in ratings on Tuesday but not surprised since episode 4 is all kinds of funny.

I wonder how Just Between Lovers did since its numbers are not included. The first two episodes are very promising for a beautiful drama to come.

hahaha... True!!.... Now, YSH is on the bottom, just like what happened last summer, where Ruler Master of the Crap: rules on the ratings vs Queen for Seven Days??... Really, seriously??... Maybe a karma?... Lol. just kidding... nothing against YSH, but maybe "maybe justice prevails now.."(?)... YWJ was in 7dq, and that drama really deserves to be on the top during it's airing on that time slot....... felt bad for 7dq casts that time, it doesn't deserve a low rating vs Ruler....

I don't think it's a show that can be judged by it's ratings - MBC tends to get sub-standard numbers. I'm actually really enjoying I'm Not a Robot.

Go watch it! The show is funny, heartwarming, and has a coherent story line. It's also well acted and the leads look great together, even when they are bickering. Chae Soo Bin has been a gem so far and is amazing as Jia, the robot Aji3, and Jia pretending to be Aji3.

Yay smart prison living deserves all those numbers and more.
However, I am extremely sad for I am not a Robot, seems like people are not even giving it a chance.
Looking at the chart, I realised how different kind of shows are airingin this crop of dramas however, DB has chosen to recap shows that more or less lie in somewhat the same territory.

Yes unfortunately, someone mentioned a few days earlier that DB is becoming a place for people who like rom coms( I'm sorry if I quoted it wrong, I don't exactly remember what the comment was but it was sth along these lines). Even though I love DB, I feel like this statement is somewhat true.

Required fields are marked *

JB and GF have always been up-front about their love for rom-coms, though. I do think it is a pity that Heads seems to be MIA right now because she was great at giving sageuks attention (not that we have any sageuks airing at the moment), but in general I have always felt that DB has had a lot of people who love rom-coms, both in its staff and in its users.

That being said, I also wish more dramas were being recapped. The decisions for which dramas are being recapped just doesn't surprise me.

I am disappointed that Smart Prison Living is no longer being recapped, though. :( I imagine that decision was either due to the episodes being so long or due to the licensing issues causing the first two recaps to just be filled with people saying "I wish I could watch this but I can't".

7
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes I know that JB and GF surely like rom coms more and maybe other DB staff too but I hope we could have recaps for every genre that is airing right now because there is a whole lot of diversity. I sure was disappointed when SPL stopped being recapped but it was sooo long that it must have been a big task to recap that. It was a great help to understand the puns that Netflix usually misses.

2

My theory about Yoo Seung-ho as a leading man is that he needs a drama of substance, like Remember, to interest the Korean audience. He still looks and acts very young, so when they present him in a soft romance role the audience goes elsewhere.

1
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Maybe but I thought he looked very young for Remember too. In all honesty, I don't like hum much as an actor, he is good but something about him is off that I don't concentrate on him when he is in the scene. In this show too for me, CSB is taking his limelight. But the show itself is good, so I am a little disappointed for it.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I love him to pieces but I'm not impressed with his progress.
He is way over praised around here imo.
Most of his female co-stars have always done better with very little to work with or having to play a crappy character opposite him.

He's been in the business since he was a child and we expect more from him like we do from Park Eun-bin, Shim Eun-kyun, Lee Hyun-woo etc.
Seems like the girls are living up to expectation at least to me.

5

Required fields are marked *

People are so used to him acting in melodramas they aren't interested in his rom-com roles, sadly.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

DB has always been a rom.com heaven. Once in awhile we'd get a crime thriller or a sageuk ( Joseon X-files <3) from JB and GF.
HeadsNo2 was our sageuk/heavy drama recapper.

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

Gummi too I believe would recap thrillers often and she is not here too anymore. Maybe I just noticed that the shows being recapped are the same but they have always been like this.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Or honestly the shows not being recapped have more substance than those that are being recapped ( SPL, JBL) so I am noticing it more. This is also something that happened with the previous crop.

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think recapping shows that they love is way more enjoyable to read.
The majority prefers relaxing and feel good shows which is why rom.com is the most popular.

It's definitely hard to accommodate everyone's taste in dramas.
I think only a handful are into some of the heavier dramas and it's hard for the recappers when only a few seems to appreciate their hard work.
"Women of Dignity" was one of those shows.
Thank Goodness "Forest of Secrets" "Circle" etc had a good amount of fans appreciating the show and the recaps.

Beside DB being a favorite K-drama hangout, Thundie's Prattle was another site that I love. It's too bad Thundie is currently not active or we'd have 2 sites with different genres of recaps.
I still visit her sites just to read old recaps etc.

100% behind this sentiment. ^^;

In fact, Black Knight had already pulled ahead during its debut week. It’s appears to be doing pretty well in South Korea but less so internationally. The main objection seems to be with the female lead’s past performances but she’s playing her part competently here. She doesn’t overact but she certainly shows a range of emotion, albeit at times fairly subtly.

Kim Rae won has also ruffled feathers as a result of his choice of role in the past, particularly by those who confuse character with actor. His popularity both at home and abroad make it unlikely that he is the cause of this negativity, though.

I’ve read some suggestions that the plot resembles other dramas from a similar genre - eh yes but that’s what makes them belong to that genre. Rather like criticizing legal dramas for being about lawyers.

I also noted a lot of hate for this show on a major international streaming site before it even premiered; there were low ratings given before any episodes had been broadcast. The drama has yet to appear on the site main page nor is it coming up as a top pick for me although I’ve watched all episodes.

Am I being paranoid or is there some kind of conspiracy going on? Is it something to do with it being kocowa content? What is going on?

Required fields are marked *

I don't think there's conspiracy going around, the negativity towards Shin Se-kyung might be so strong, from Fashion King's time and as a result some people just avoided her drama without any other reason, unless if she is partnered with their favourite oppa, so no choice to at least try few epi or stay until the end for their oppa. Other criticisms towards this drama fall into the second place in my opinion. Whether she id doing a good job or not, I've yet to see it because her character isn't much different from her last role, so supposedly she could do a better job here -because that's what second time supposed to be.

I first watched SSK in When A Man Loves, I disliked her acting in that drama, her character didn't help either, since then I tried to avoid her but she's always paired up with a good cast and good plot, the only drama I could easily avoid her in BOTWG because neither the cast or the changed plot interest me.

I've not watched the drama yet but Shin Sekyung was actually praised by media outlets for her performance here. But yeah she's disliked by alot of international viewers, so I'm not surprised people are avoiding or hating the drama even without watching it.
Also, there has been criticism that Black Knight was too similar to Goblin.

How irony it is.. when fans wanted other drama to get what Yoo Seung-ho's last drama (Ruler) got, but now fans want the other drama's rating for Yoo Seung-ho's current drama. (It is Yoo Seung-ho - Yeon Woo-jin competing again lol, and now with Kim Rae-won as well). Well that's the rating game for us, hard to understand because people are watching what they want, good drama for us not necessarily the same for others. I'm glad Judge vs Judge is doing well despite of less hyped casts, just for the casts. As for Black Knight - for me 90% for its mysterious part (credits to our two immortals i.e. Sharon and Baek-hee who made me stay with this drama) and 10% for Kim Rae-won. It's not a huge hit yet and I'm not sure it it will reach doube digit soon. I haven't checked the netizens' reactions towards this drama, but it is interesting to know what contributing to this good rating.

With tvN joined the game -Wise Prison Life also has same airing time (started at 9.30pm), we can expect more competition. Wait until jTBC and OCN join as well, 3% for public broadcasters might not even a surprise anymore.

Just Between Lovers is airing at 11pm on Mon-Tues, it might not a good strategy for rating. This timeslot is also new, I think jTBC used to have this timeslot but I couldn't recall what drama was that, so actually the rating was decent.

11pm on Fri -Sat is better than the same airing time on Mon-Tues, I guess. tvN also changed their regular timeslot for Mon-Tues slot from 11pm /10.50pm to 9.30pm started from BTLIOF, maybe for rating strategy.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think so. That could contribute to the decrease of the rating in epi 2, I guess. Not because the drama is not good but Mon-Tues might be more for romcom / comedy days and airing it at 11pm might not helping on the rating as well.

2

Required fields are marked *

I think the decrease on Tuesday is contributed by competing with tvN's Kang's Kitchen (5.3%).

2

Required fields are marked *

I love it so far, but I wasn't surprised the ratings decreased for Ep. 2 because it's a show that's not going to be for everyone, but I didn't realize it was airing so late. The episodes ran long too. An earlier timeslot would be better, I think.

Required fields are marked *

Makes sense. I'll be watching it over the weekend as well - its simply too much at the beginning of the working week.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well Just Between Lovers is not too melo and dramatic though, there is alot of drama in mon-tues slot in which has more dramatic element in the past. Defendant and whisper anyone? So that's just doesn't excuse the low rating imo.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I didn't meant the low rating was mainly because of it is being a melo. My main prediction it was due to the timeslot which is at 11pm. Defendant, Whisper etc etc were airing at 10pm and with well known casts as well. Besides like @lalalili mentioned aboved, on Tues slot it is competing with variety Kang's Kitchen which starts at 10.50pm. Rating might be increased this week, no one knows but so far I think it is pretty decent.

In comparison tvN this year, which changed their Mon-Tues timeslot from 11pm to 9.30pm started from BTLIOF, was having the advantage as well. We can see its rating was good compared to previous drama for this year (of course there are other factors but this is from timeslot view).

1

I think it's more timeslot issue being new in jtbc. I agree

2

I will never understand ratings.
Robot is such a cute show with a great cast and lovable characters and exactly what I needed right now.

Nothing to Lose on the other hand I'll continue to watch for the cast, but the writing leaves something to be desired. I can't get over how everyone is somehow coincidentally connected and writing judgments on cases they should definitely not be presiding over.
That said the cast is doing great and someone please give our knucklehead prosecutor a warm hug.

I can't wait and I really hope they do soon conclude the two cases that are hindering the drama's flow. At this point it's just majorly draggy and fatigued. And quite frankly it's very hard to keep caring for the accused poor/stupide.

In the meantime I'm here to keep Knucklehead warm. <3

I am not watching Nothing to Lose because I can't imagine the characters as judges, but I had predicted this would be a good choice for Dong Ha rather than accepting the lead role in I'm Not a Robot. Also Yeon Woo Jin deserves some love after the mediocre ratings of Seven Day Queen.

Legal & crime thriller drama is always a good choice for rating because there are already targeted viewers for this genre, although it might not that good. Others like Two Cops and Doubtful Victory also have stable audience ratings. It's good Dong-ha declined INAR, because otherwise he will be burdened with the low rating especially for his first main lead role. I'm just glad it is doing well for the sake of the main casts, because I want both YWJ and PEB to keep getting main lead roles and also for Dong-ha to upgrade his status.

I watched 2 episodes of Prison PlayBook but I don't find it as amazing as everyone saying, the first episode was boring, the second is better but still not hooked, JKH doesn't have much screen time the drama is mainly revolving around the Superstar, i wish they made him his cellmate instead of being an officer, he doesn't do much, I don't how things are in the upcoming episodes but i zone out a lot while watching.

I actually like ep 4,5 and 6 better than the first 3 and a big reason for that is that JKH doesn't appear much in those. The show gets really good from ep 3 on wards but it definitely is not up to everyone's taste. It is slow and will need patience for every character's story arc.

I was overseas in Asia the last 2 weeks in November and that really put be behind in keeping up with my dramas. When I returned on Dec. 1st and to maximize my 2017 bean count I had to finish WYWS, Witch's Court and Mad Dog before I could begin a new series. I am still plodding through Temperature of Love a 32 episode (not 40) drama if there ever was one.
As always there are several dramas I would like to be watching but I had my eye on 2 of them: Prison Playbook and I'm Not a Robot.
I started Prison Playbook last week it has really grabbed a hold of me.
I am a fan of Jung Kyung-ho from Cruel City days so I was hoping to watch this drama. The idea of 90 minutes episodes was initially a bit daunting but I am enjoying the pace and character development through the first 4 episodes. I look forward to the next episodes so the episode length I haven't found to be a detraction. I think the ratings are proving out that this is a quality drama. The performances so far have been terrific across-the-board.

Started watching Black Knight but I am surprised the numbers are so high already. Just between lovers is on a late timeslot but hope it gets better numbers.

I really like I'm Not A Robot. Is it just me? Or is it because of Yoo Seung-ho? Well, either way I don't mind if they're getting low rating. I'm still liking it. It's fresh and fun. Chae Soo-bin has grown!

Agreed, there are a lot of dramas airing at the moment but I'm not keeping up with a lot of them too. I only watch MY GOLDEN LIFE, MONEY FLOWER, and I'M NOT A ROBOT.

Maybe this coming new year offers some weekdays drama of my cup of tea.
