Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 25-31, 2017

The chart is a bit empty this week, due to a slew of pre-emptions that took our regular programming off the air. Most of them are related to year-end programming, such as the broadcasters’ acting and entertainment awards, although Hwayugi’s pre-emption was prompted by its staffer accident, which resulted in inspections of the filming site for safety conditions.

Most of the shows affected were our long-running weekend ones, which we can expect back to their normal schedules next week.

Happy new year, everyone!

This year's ratings were very sad.
Maybe the wave was because of the presidential elections, because after Whisper ended, 14% was considered a huge deal for weekday shows.

TVN was really bad this year, except for some shows which everybody agreed were good (FoS, LutyN) and I think they have really struck gold with the Na PD team (NJTtW, Newlywed Diaries, 3MAD) who also work at the Reply series and Prison Playbook (In Winner over flowers NA PD said the writer of Prison Playbook is a writer of NJTtW too).

JTBC had a ton of luck with the SWDBS team, and had nice ratings on other dramas (since JTBC is not asking for subpar ratings).

OCN was really good with Tunnel, Voice . And Save Me made a lot of noise despite the ratings.

Public broadcasts were a little disappointing , and only Defendant and Chief Kim cracked the barriers, while others were popular only for a part of viewers.

KBS is doing much better than mbc and sbs, Chief Kim, Fight My Way, Witch's court and Black Night over 11%, Jugglers is doing well it might reach 10%, add the 3 weekends this year which reached over 35%.

I think these three shows deserve a mention too. Buamdong Revenge Club and The Most Beautiful Goodbye performed rather well, quality and rating wise. Both got 6%+.

Tbh, Woman of Dignity doing much better than SWDBS on both quality and rating fronts.

TVN performed better in 2nd half of the year and JTBC saw rise 1n 1st half. Overall JTBC gave stiff competition to TVN this year.
Creat good show and people will watch it. Content wise it was a pretty bad year. Better stories can be found on fanfiction forums. I don't know how come these hacks even get the job of writing. Most of the content is just being recycled and pushed upon audience forcibly.

Live New year programs are airing on all known channels. Google. http://www.skpblive.com/2016/10/live-stream-youtube.html

I don't think this year is bad, this year is actually fantastic with different variety of issue, the reception is what lacking, no goblin or dots esque drama this year and what popular in SK didn't translate to the ifans that well also no romcom is popular, no young actor/actress drama is popular so it feels like the year is lacking impact when I think this year has a better variety of a drama with older actor/actresses as the main lead.

This year has defendant, chief kim, woman of dignity, avenger social club, tunnel, voice, forest of secret, seven day queen, rebel, prison playbook, go back couple [even in here the leads are like 30's], falsify, lookout, fight for my way, Girls' Generation 1979, age of youth, Oh My Geum Bi [finally a kid as the main lead], Man Who Dies to Live, The Most Beautiful Goodbye in the World, circle and black.
The huge booming of weekend drama again with father is strange and my golden life. This is an example of writing a new weekend drama and make it all about weekend drama cliche that ever happened.

There is this huge gap between what popular in south korea [while it aired] that comes late to ifan because of subtitle ala avenger social club.

The most important things that make the buzzed low this year for me is that the leads of all good drama is nowhere near their 20's or for 20's demographic [except for fight my way]. Defendant, Chief Kim, Woman of Dignity, Rebel and My golden Life can be claimed to be the drama of the year year but all the lead and the main issue didn't cater to the demographic of goblin and dots.
Just be honest, looked at the reception between the ahjussi with great writing compare to the rom com with young lead, hardly half of the viewer actually care about the ahjussi or ahjumma.

TLDR : content wise, this year gives a lot of variety and unique theme rather than rom-com for teens.
Sadly that also make the reception for international fans unheard because the leads age for good-great drama, in average is 30 something therefore i-fans has no reaction to them, either because they aren't fans, they never heard of them, the "theme" is too procedural or "it's not about love story when we can live vicariously with the 20's hot male lead there".

Also subtitle problem.

I think this kind of show needs to be very good and powerful to get viewers attention otherwise it would be better off in a cable channel like "Circle."

MBC had a month long strike before INAR aired so that possibly had an impact on how much buzz it got in Korea. I also think the genre can be a tough sell and both actors have been in other dramas this year so maybe that comes into play as well.

I am so happy for Jugglers. Let it hit 10% mark in the next episodes. Loving the show.

I am Not a robot's ratings are disappointing. It isnt a great show, but it has got sweet moments which are good overall. It is disheartening to see such low numbers for a show which airs on Big 3 channel.

I am so sad that Smart Prison living, Money Flower, and Bad guys got pre-empted this week. These are the best shows airing during this period and i am always hungry for more episodes from these shows.

Black Knight is catching up my attention lately, because of the evil ones there. They are hilarious. The show is going good.

Is it me, or does anyone doesnt get feeling of watching the drama when some of the dramas where the the 1 hour episode is split into two parts/episodes. It breaks up the flow of the story, and loses the momentum.

Happy new year beanies.

Happy New Year, beanies!!

Omo, it's just insane that BK has hit above 10%. Has anybody been keeping up with episodes like me? I've been quite bored recently (holidays!) and have had nothing better to watch. The most recent 2 episodes were horrifying in terms of humour/romance. I'd like to think that it's because I don't particularly prefer SSK as an actress, but I actually thought she was ok in Habaek. I even prefer Habaek to this, somehow, if that's even possible.

Hoping that Jugglers hits double digits soon! And that INAR improves a little, because dayumn does Yoo Seung-ho have a fantastic range of emotions. Fingers crossed.

I think in BOTWG the romance made sense to me at least... even if the other parts of the show were quite disappointing. So at least I could swoon a little. But for BK I can't even get myself behind the romance. It's so weird because one moment Hae-ra (SSK) is all about NOT getting into the romance, and the next she's all aegyo and into it. It makes me a little jaded about this whole romance plot, and I think I'm more interested in the two undying witches than the romance. That's a bad sign, IMO.

The “romance” between the main leads isn’t working for me either. I don’t get it at all. They don’t really do anything together, there’s no development, no chemistry... it’s like watching paint dry.

The witches on the other hand, that’s where the series really shines. Those 2 women are what are making me watch every week. And now with the villainous land developer in on their secret, I expect that side of the story to really ignite.

I was surprised to find out it’s a 20 episode run.

FACT ..koreans are actually watching it for the lead pair and i think only the international ones like the witches (i personally don't get why..nothing extra ordinary about them)
and i think some people are down playing the success of this drama and not giving the leads the credit they deserve by saying oooh its bcos of the witches...no it isnt......the entire backbone of the story revolves around all 4 and originates from the leads..if this drama didnt have its leads am sure by 100% the ratings wouldnt be the same
and ssk received high praise from knets for her double role in the last episode ..its allover naver even soompi wrote about it thats why nowdays people who arent koreans and keep on saying she cant act,i take them as simple haters..people cant stop swooning over them(netizens) and some of us who aint biased

3

I guess almost everyone is interested mainly on the two witches, maybe because they seem to have upper hands in OTP's life.

I think part of the ratings for Black Knight comes not only because the romance is working for the local audience, but also because this writer tends to write a lot of female characters who move the plot along. At least she did in Unkind Women which also did quite well in Korea and was very female centric. Since women (I've been lead to believe) are the main consumers of k-drama, this explains a lot of the ratings success.

I like it just because it is an easy watch and I like the random vibe of it all. Exp: cake eating scene and assistant dance scene. I mean, what the heck but then I think, why not!?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

BK is weird. I like the funny bits between the 2 ancient ladies but the romance is a bit odd. And the dancing parts are just plain weird to me. Really surprised it has such high ratings.
I'm not a Robot is nice and funny but I admit the story is a bit stuck now...I am getting bored of the fact that she still has to pretend to be a robot.

KBS is the real winner atm. Jugglers was so close to double digits (!!!!), BK hit a series high this week and MGL is a hit. I'm surprised that Jugglers is doing so well (shows I like usually flop lol), but I'm glad that simple, charming shows like this can be successful too. This is a good post army comeback project for Daniel Choi (I've never liked him so much as I do here!) and Baek Jin Hee really needed a hit show that doesn't waste her talent so I'm happy for her. Fingers crossed that the show keeps this momentum going and the writer handles the upcoming conflict with grace.

I really missed Money Flower this week. :(

That said, poor INAR. It is one of my favourites on right now with many well written and likeable characters and I don't get why it's doing so badly. I hope it doesn't stop anyone from trying to write more unconventional scripts.

No.1 for me is I am Not Robot! I don't understand why Black Knight gets a higher rating, the couple is boring, the scenes are way pretty, both females are really pretty but I was watching it a while ago and I find myself browsing Facebook coz I can't concentrate on the show. I find the pacing of the show a tad slow so I watch at 1.5 speed or 2x just to save on time. Why watch it, coz I have nothin' else to watch for now.
1. I am Not Robot
2. mysterious Il Seung
3. Jugglers
4. Two Cops
5. Black Knight
6. Nothing to lose
that's all I can watch for now and My Golden Life.
I'll start on Untouchable, Money Flower, Bad Guys, Smart Prison Living when and if I find the time.
Hwayugi for later when it resumes regular programming.

Marathoned "Just Between Lovers," this weekend and I have to agree that it deserves much better ratings that it is getting. Black Knight baffles me. I have watched every episode so far, but I almost had to force myself to watch the last one. Jugglers is still gaining momentum, which is awesome because this is one of the best shows running at the moment unless you count Money Flower, which keeps hitting it out of the ballpark...like Wise Prison Life, which deserves even more recognition than it is getting.

I managed half of one episode of Black Knight. I just thought it was silly. Maybe it gets better but it seems that its silliness is what people like about it.

I was just saying that I'd like to work out what people are seeing in Jugglers that I am not seeing. It seems weirdly old-fashioned to me and I don't like the OTP. I find it hard to be invested in a 'How dare you accuse me of sleeping with my boss, now I am going to sleep with my boss" plotline. Also, as far as I can tell what he likes about her is that she's utterly devoted to him as his assistant. That is not a relationship that will ast.

Oh IANAR, my poor YSH, I hope he doesn't get spooked by RomCom genre because of the low rating. It's not your fault YSH, please don't go into hiding when the show ends. Take a better project, hopefully on KBS or Tvn with a good writer to wipe out the first ratings fail of your career.

BK is getting interesting with the vamp getting more desperate and the villian knowing about the two immortal witches. I wonder how that will play.

Jugglers is love, the last 2 episodes were so FLUFFY. I adore the OTP. They are so cute!

It's a pity about JBL, I am going to watch it after it ends but the small clips that I have seen on IG were pretty good.

That's the thing about opinions, everyone has a different one. :) Even though I LOVE & ADORE YSH, I can see the glaring flaws in IANAR. But I am still watching it because he alone is basically carrying the show.

About Juggler, maybe you are not in Office Romance? That's fine though, if you don't like it or the OTP. You don't need to question yourself on why you can't love a show or OTP like everyone else does. It's OK to dislike something.

Required fields are marked *

There's something disturbing about the gender politics in the main OTP in Jugglers that extends to the rest of the drama. It seems really old-fashioned. Like what he loves about her is that she's devoted utterly to his wellbeing. But that's her job, not the real person. That's something that's ultimately destructive, especially for her. I don't like it at all.

So maybe it is just an opinion thing. But I was curious as to what other people saw in it that they thought was so good. It seems like 20 other shows but without an OTP to root for.

I had to put Jugglers on hold because I still don't get the romance. It's way too soon for those two - they were just learning to cooperate as two people doing their job, how can I believe he can see her as anything other than just someone who's on his side... or rather someone who's there to serve him?

@liquidsoap It reminds me of that awful 'man sleeping with secretary' cliche. When he goes, 'my wife is so busy and my secretary always has time for me'. And I'm like 'THAT'S HER JOB'.
