I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 7-8

After the nonstop hilarity of the last episodes, this hour takes a contemplative turn, and a trip to the past gives us new insight into Min-kyu’s condition. But the laughs are never far away when you throw together a bunch of dorks and a fauxbot, making for a stream of endless tittering that stills only for love (see: Min-kyu’s sweater). I’m so onboard with this romance that I almost don’t care which way it’s served to me. Bring it, bring it all!

EPISODE 7: “Painful Memories”

The scene opens on the past: Little Min-kyu’s parents cheer him on as he builds his very first house of cards. When it topples down, Dad chases away Min-kyu’s disappointment with cool card tricks. Present Min-kyu narrates, “There are some moments that become memories you long for intensely.”

In another memory, little Min-kyu plays boisterously with little Yoo-chul. Everyone then gathers for Min-kyu’s birthday party, where Yoo-chul adorably dabs some frosting on Min-kyu’s face. Present Min-kyu narrates again: “Some moments become beautiful memories you’ll never see again.”

On the drive home, Min-kyu and his parents play word-games. As Dad rolls down his window, one of the birthday balloons gets in his face and their car gets caught in the path of an oncoming truck.

“And some moments…” The narration tails off.

He next wakes up in hospital, sobbing for his parents, both of whom were killed in the crash. Yoo-chul’s father comforts him, saying, “You’re my son now. Yoo-chul and I will become your family.” Aww, little Yoo-chul is crying nearly as much as Min-kyu.

He takes Min-kyu to his parents’ funeral, where a sea of company officials part to make way for them. Someone brushes by Min-kyu, slipping something into his pocket.

KM’s Managing Director Yoon finds Min-kyu afterwards and gently consoles him. He then asks Min-kyu to sign off on the funeral, but Min-kyu goes to the bathroom first. While there, he discovers a card in his pocket, from “Madame X.” Ohhh! Inside, she advises him not to sign anything.

He doesn’t think much of it, until he overhears Director Yoon reporting to Yoo-chul’s dad (not yet chairman) that an unsuspecting Min-kyu was about to sign the papers. Hiding, Min-kyu watches all the company directors pay their respects to Yoo-chul’s dad as if he were chairman already.

Yoo-chul comes looking for Min-kyu, excited that they’re going to live together and become family. Yoo-chul offers, “I’ll be the hyung and you be my dongsaeng. Or if you don’t like that, you can be the hyung and I’ll be your dongsaeng.” Aww.

He has the papers with him, and Min-kyu leafs through to the last page, which would make Yoo-chul’s dad his legal guardian. Looking tormented, he signs it and hands it back. Thrilled, Yoo-chul grips his friend’s hand.

“Be strong, my friend… wait, we’re family now,” Yoo-chul corrects, smile wide. But when Min-kyu looks down at their hands, Yoo-chul’s turns into monstrous claws. Terrified, Min-kyu runs away screaming, blisters forming where Yoo-chul touched him.

Concerned, Yoo-chul returns the papers to his father, who opens the last page to see “son of a bitch” written in place of Min-kyu’s signature. Face tight, Yoo-chul’s dad says that it looks like Min-kyu wants to live alone.

Little Min-kyu returns to his dark, empty home. As day breaks, he catches sight of his reflection, and screams to see himself covered in red welts.

“Recollections, memories… all became punishments for me,” Min-kyu’s narration finishes.

Min-kyu jolts awake in the present, with Jia beside him. He tells her that he was dreaming of people stabbing him in the back, and he’s surprised to find that he’s in totally normal condition, not a mark on him. “You recognized me!” he says to Jia, elated, “and you gave me the injection!

Jia beams and assures him that she’d recognize him no matter what. He squishes her cheeks and says she’s promoted to the Pretty Squad, which she’s totally psyched about, hee. But he glares at her when he finds needles sticking out of his thigh and shoulder, and she explains sheepishly that she was able to inject him, but not quite able to remove the syringes. He cancels her promotion, but she won’t let him take it back.

She asks what he’s allergic to, but he says it’s a secret. “Secrets between friends are bad,” Jia replies, and he reminds her she’s meant to be in Operation Mode. She asks if he’d like Friend Mode right now since it looks like he could do with one, but he plans to take a nap and sends her away.

On her way out, Jia asks about his foot, and Min-kyu looks down in dismay at one final needle sticking out of it. Hahaha!

As Jia dashes off, she bumps into Robovac, and apologizes to “sunbae-nim” before catching herself. “We’re on the same level now,” she says smugly.

She notices the box of the action figure she got for Min-kyu, and finally sees the smear of sauce across it. She realizes she’s been in the wrong all along, and recalls him saying how much he hated being misled and deceived. “He must’ve suffered a painful betrayal,” she says to herself.

Baek-gyun reviews the footage of Min-kyu telling Jia to take off her clothes, and becomes convinced he’s a pervert. As soon as Jia returns, he scolds her for going off with Min-kyu, but she defends her master.

“I’m your master!” Baek-gyun argues, and Jia points to the robot and tells him Aji-3’s over there. She moves on to the more urgent matter of Min-kyu’s right-hand man also being her brother. To her relief, Baek-gyun agrees to help her keep her presence secret.

She looks for Pi to help her undo the titanium corset. Little do they know that Butler Sung has called out the rest of the team, jubilantly putting them to work on a huge paint job. Without Pi, Jia has to resort to getting help from Baek-gyun, who swears he’s not looking at her (and to be fair, he’s not).

As she gets dressed behind the curtain, Baek-gyun tries to tell her that she’s no longer a woman to him, but in a hurry, she just runs out as soon as she’s done. He sighs heavily.

Jia catches up with Sun-hye, giving her all the news on Min-kyu, including how she saved his life. But there’s no chance that the universe is conspiring to bring them together, Jia tells Sun-hye, because his “flower-like first love” just showed up.

Noticing that Jia’s gone from calling Min-kyu “that psycho jerk” to “that man,” Sun-hye tells her she should have a go seducing him. “But I’m a robot,” Jia says. Sun-hye thinks that’s even better—it’ll prove man and machine can have a transcendent love! But she wonders if Jia’s okay working with her ex every day. Oh, Jia’s fine…

“Horrible girl,” Baek-gyun mutters in his workshop. “Me?” asks the real Aji-3. He clarifies that he meant Jia, and Aji-3 tells him to specify the subject so her input is accurate. “Horrible girl,” he says again, and this time, he specifies that he means Aji-3. Aw, he’s kind of hopeless, isn’t he?

Meanwhile, Sun-hye gives Jia the letters of petition she’s gathered, asking to reinstate the competition. Considering how she misunderstood Min-kyu with the action figure, Jia reckons her case might not be lost after all.

Min-kyu wakes up calling for Aji-3, before remembering she’s gone. He phones up Dr. Oh to report his unusually rapid recovery, but the doc thinks it must not have been as serious. Disgruntled, Min-kyu insists that he very nearly died.

The package with the necklace catches his eye, and he next calls Jia. She actually answers, “Yes, Mast—” and juuust manages to catch herself at the last moment. Min-kyu is so hilariously inattentive, it kills me.

He tells her he got her package, and asks how he can be sure she didn’t break it. By opening it, you silly nitwit! Jia urges him to believe her, to which he replies that he can’t. As they bicker, he wonders why he’s even talking to her, and hangs up. I can’t type, I’m laughing too hard!

Back to calling him a psycho, Jia berates herself for thinking for a second that he was normal.

At that very moment, oppa Jin-bae is in Yoo-chul’s office, watching a video demonstration of Aji-3. Jin-bae can’t believe how much the robot resembles his sister, though he keeps his thoughts to himself. He disavows any knowledge of robot development within the company, but Yoo-chul notes his nervous movements and asks Jin-bae to let him know if he discovers anything.

Yoo-chul shares his suspicion that Jin-bae seemed to recognize Aji-3’s face with Director Yoon. He asks Yoon what the progress is on tracking down the Santa Maria team.

The bumbling men in black are still on the case, and call up the number they got via the team’s license plate. Ssan-ip is too busy laboring to answer, and the Bumblers hilariously put this down to genius. They lure them with a package at the old address instead, and Hok-tal and Ssan-ip rush over thinking it’s the part they’ve been waiting for. The Bumblers tail their van, only to lose them literally at Min-kyu’s gates, hahaha.

Meanwhile, Min-kyu struggles to take his mind off first love Ri-el and her proposal. He switches on the TV to the handcuff-kiss scene from W—Two Worlds, which only makes him think of what Ri-el said about agreeing to marry him if she finds she can kiss him.

He switches it off in annoyance, and an imaginary Aji-3 asks him if he needs a friend right now. Scoffing at the idea, he turns to Robovac, but immediately finds the little machine lacking. “That’s right! What I need right now isn’t a friend, just someone to talk to,” he rationalizes.

Reviewing Min-kyu’s allergic reaction footage, Baek-gyun pegs him as definitely abnormal. I guess it takes one to know one, eh? He can’t decide whether to let Jia go to him again or not.

When Hok-tal and Ssan-ip return, aching all over from painting all day, Jia tells them to take off their shirts so she can put medicated patches on. Baek-gyun leaps in and says he’ll do it, causing the boys to halt their disrobing and politely decline.

Gloves on and baton extended, Min-kyu approaches the team’s barn. Man, I love his Dork Scamander look. But he’s scandalized to hear strange moaning come from within. Baek-gyun is helping them after all, and both boys yowl in pain/ecstasy as the patches go on.

Jia laughs with everyone else, and Min-kyu recognizes Aji-3’s voice. “You’re laughing like that even though your master’s not there?” he grumps indignantly to himself.

Inside, Jia suggests swimming to the boys, as a cure for their aches. This seems to give them an idea, but they’re distracted when Jia points out a red light that’s been flashing for a while. Uh-oh, it’s a GPS tracker, probably on Min-kyu.

At that moment, Min-kyu eases open the barn door…

EPISODE 8: “Beautiful Memories”

Min-kyu pokes his head around but bolts back when he’s met by Baek-gyun. Deflecting suspicion from himself, he accuses Baek-gyun of keeping tabs on him.

Baek-gyun says he came out to buy medicated patches, and complains of Butler Sung working his team like farmhands. Min-kyu imperiously explains that he doesn’t like outsiders; he’s only tolerating them because of Aji-3.

He wants to see Aji-3 right now, but Baek-gyun vetoes, saying she’s charging. Min-kyu argues that he just heard her talking, and Baek-gyun argues that they’re fixing her skin sensors because someone’s been touching her too much. Hahaha!

No touching!

Grinning darkly, Min-gyu says that’s his call. Baek-gyun laughs back and replies, “Whether I send Aji-3 or not is my call.” These two are so immature, I love it. Min-kyu tells him to pack his bags if he’s going to be like that, but when Baek-gyun calls his bluff, Min-kyu knows he’s lost and leaves in a huff.

Earlier, Hok-tal and Ssan-ip had explained to Jia that they installed a tracker on Min-kyu’s phone. She’s touched by them looking out for her that she calls them both “oppa,” to their everlasting joy. The memory makes Baek-gyun sigh.

Min-kyu floats in his pool, lost in thought, but flounders at the noisy arrival of Hok-tal, Ssan-ip, and a giant inflatable flamingo. The boys peel off their clothes and drop into the bottom of the pool… where a cross-legged Min-kyu stares at them like a ghoul. Letting out soundless screams, they flee.

Pi asks Baek-gyun what’s bothering him. He shows her the allergy footage and asks what she thinks. She thinks that Jia probably has the best understanding of the situation. “Why can’t you trust Jia’s judgment?” she asks. “Was she untrustworthy while you were dating?”

He concedes that she wasn’t. “That’s it then. Whether Three Part Baton [Min-kyu] is a pervert or not, you don’t want to send her to him,” she observes.

Jin-bae can’t sleep that night, and his wife (whose name is Hong-joo) treats him to a midnight snack. She can see he’s tired, and smiling, she tells him that he should do what he wants to do, adding that being a lawyer suited him best. (He was previously a human rights lawyer.)

She learns that Jia isn’t taking his calls, and laments that if it’d be different if Jia had met a better guy than a professor who makes robots. That’s news to Jin-bae, and he’s shocked to find out Jia’s ex is, in fact, Baek-gyun.

Back at the barn, Jia also lies wakeful. Gazing at her from his desk, Baek-gyun thinks back to their first proper meeting. She’d come to ask him to find a way to realize one of her ideas—an umbrella that becomes opaque or transparent at the touch of a button.

She explained that while she had ideas for items, she didn’t have the technical knowhow to create them. Baek-gyun didn’t think it would have mass appeal, but Jia replied that she wanted to make things that would be used lovingly, if only by a few people.

Later, it started to rain as she sketched outside, and a dark umbrella sheltered her. She looked up and saw Baek-gyun. Leaning closer with a smile, he’d pressed a button and the umbrella became transparent.

Jia makes her way to the mansion the next morning, while Aji-3’s been hidden in the lab’s bathroom to keep her from Baek-gyun’s visitor, Jin-bae. Locked in a faceoff with Baek-gyun, Jin-bae formally introduces himself as Jia’s elder brother. Baek-gyun introduces himself as Jia’s ex-boyfriend.

At the mansion, Min-kyu immediately switches Jia to Friend Mode. He’s disappointed when she responds sullenly, because he has tons of stuff to talk to her about. She says he must have tons of friends to talk to, but he replies simply that he’s only got her.

She brightens for a second when he says Ri-el’s not a friend. “She’s a woman,” he says glumly. “But why do I feel like I’m being interrogated by an ex-girlfriend?” he wonders .

Eager to deflect his attention, Jia seizes on the still-unopened package she sent him. But she puts her foot in it again by asking about the necklace. She passes it off as a lucky guess, and he has her open it up. Relieved that it’s in perfect condition, he tells Jia to put it on him, which she does with an accompanying eyeroll.

But she smiles to see him so happy, and he tells her it’s a keepsake from his parents: His dad proposed to his mom one night during a meteor shower, and there’s a piece of meteorite inside the necklace itself.

He calls up an image of the night sky in the place his dad proposed, and Jia looks at it in awe. “When you look like that, you seem like a real person,” Min-kyu tells her. Aw, look at you looking at her. He lights up and says he’ll take her there in the winter to see a meteor shower.

But the one going then will be Aji-3, not me, she thinks sadly. Min-kyu tells her that when he wants to get married in the future, he’ll propose with that necklace. I swear she fell about 12 percent in love with him just now.

At the KM office, Ri-el’s turned up to work a day early, but is disappointed that Min-kyu’s not there. She pops in on Yoo-chul, who’s pleased to see his old friend. They playfully trade chat-up lines, and she tells him about her dad wanting her to marry. He guesses with dismay that it’s Min-kyu.

Pacing in front of Jia, Min-kyu explains that his friend—not him!—got a proposal from his first love, but he has a sliiight also fatal illness. “If he can’t kiss or hold hands, would it still be possible to get married?” Min-kyu asks.

Jia is doubtful, since the point of love is to embrace each other till death do them part. But when he admits that his first love still makes his heart race, Jia says there’s nothing for it but to give it a shot. She tells him to go to that first love and hold her hand—

“I told you I can’t hold hands!” he exclaims, and finally spills that he has an allergy to human touch. Aji-3’s scan for data on such an illness comes up empty, and Jia accuses him for taking her for a fool.

“And until Galileo came along, everyone thought the earth was flat,” he retorts. Touché.

Hungry, he switches her back to Operation Mode and prepares to cook lunch, which is tiny crabs. She encourages him to share with the team and with a wicked smile, he says he already did. Oh no, you did something evil, didn’t you?

Hok-tal and Ssan-ip crow over the box of seafood they’ve received, but scream as soon as they open it, as the box seethes with tiny live crabs. Ohh this is punishment for the pool, isn’t it?

Jin-bae and Baek-gyun are still locked in their showdown, even as the crabs overrun them and they’re throwing them away left and right. Jin-bae tells him to change Aji-3’s face and Baek-gyun bows his head.

Min-kyu chuckles about the terror he’s sure he’s unleashed over at the lab, and Jia curses him under her breath.

Oh no, it looks like the crabs are even getting into the computers at the lab, and the team struggles to catch them. With every surface now crawling with crabs, Jin-bae and Baek-gyun are even flicking them out of their hair, though somehow they both retain the utmost dignity.

Lastly, Jin-bae asks Baek-gyun why Jia had such a hard time with him when she liked him so much. Baek-gyun doesn’t know either, but intends to find out. The crabs finally make them lose their composure, and Jin-bae asks, “Are these robots, too?”

Jia eyes Min-kyu’s food longingly, and comments that he would make a good housewife, hee. He says he learned to cook because he couldn’t eat anyone else’s food. He can now cook just about anything, he tells her, and can even replicate his mom’s cooking.

“Did you know?” Min-kyu asks, “Tastes are memories.” He mentions ruefully that while he could learn his mother’s cooking, he wasn’t quite able to learn necessary skills from his father.

Jia stares at him with liquid eyes, imagining little Min-kyu (surely too little to shave) struggling with a razor. She puts a hand on his shoulder and says, “Nevertheless, Master, you grew up well.”

As little Min-kyu fades into present Min-kyu, Jia quickly removes her hand and steps back. Min-kyu stares up at her and breathes, “My heart is tingling again.” She asks if he’s thinking of his first love.

Laughing a little, he smoothes her hair and reaches for her hand. “If she were a robot like you, I could touch her hair like this, and hold her hand,” he says.

Drawing her so close that they’re only inches apart, he whispers, “We could kiss, too.”

COMMENTS

Ermagerd, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who thought that he really did go for the kiss! But I’m also afraid he’s so close that he’s sure to feel her breath—did they think of that? Did they?

I find it hilarious that Min-kyu and Baek-gyun somehow have met a match in each other. It’s not that they see each other as equals—far from it! They each see themselves as better than the other, and I think it also irks them no end that they end up echoing each other’s thoughts. And Baek-gyun says “no” to Min-kyu a lot, which is probably a novel experience for him, so I’m all for the frenemy antics this relationship promises. However, I’m really uncomfortable with how Baek-gyun freely accesses the footage of what is essentially Min-kyu’s private life. It feels like an intense violation of privacy, especially when Min-ku was assured that it would be safeguarded, and I need the show to address this.

It seems like Jia’s the only person who can rattle Baek-gyun, though I may be in the minority thinking that he has no romantic arc in this show. I think his development will center on learning to relate to people as people, because all his interactions with Jia end the same way: with a scolding. It’s pretty clear that he’s just blundering around with no idea what he’s doing, or indeed, what he’s feeling; he might be great with all that math, but it surely is actively getting in the way of his chemistry. I’m also relieved to find that Jin-bae’s not actually terrible (though breaking Jia’s stuff is still not okay), but like his sister, he’s trapped between conflicting things. At work, he’s caught between two powerful superiors, and in his heart, he’s caught between doing his duty and doing what he wants. Maybe that’s what cuts him most about Jia—that while he’s denying himself, he sees her living as she likes. Neither of them are really wrong in their choices, but it’s all a matter of perspective.

Speaking of perspective, I realize that my affection for Yoo Seung-ho softens me to Min-kyu’s faults. I genuinely enjoy his haughty moments and imperious nature, not only because it’s so at odds with the vulnerable, sad boy he is beneath, but also because his pride always precedes embarrassment. But he lets his guard down with Jia, and as he admitted to her last episode, that hard exterior is a deliberate construction for his own preservation. Given the circumstances, I agree with her: He’s turned out all right. So if he’s a little evil from time to time, I can’t hold it against him.

The way Min-kyu relates to the robot also makes sense to me. As far as he’s concerned, Jia is a hunk of metal and wire, so there’s no argument that he should treat her like a person or an equal, AI or not. I mean, he already treats his electricals like people. I also don’t think his (or Baek-gyun’s) connection to the robot is remotely sexual. Both men are very in-their-heads types, and Min-kyu has much more basic needs to be fulfilled: emotional security, personal connection, and just simple human touch.

Yoo-chul’s backstory also adds another layer to the game. Because he was such a sincere, kindhearted kid, I feel like I can believe in adult Yoo-chul not to ultimately be an enemy. If Min-kyu severed their bond without explanation, it may well have caused a wound that never healed for Yoo-chul, and that’s a pain that can easily turn to bitterness. I think Yoo-chul exists in an uneasy place where he’s forced to see Min-kyu as an enemy because Min-kyu treats him as an enemy. But I also feel like their friendship still has a chance, and that if we peeled away a thick layer of hurt, that love still lies beneath.

I’m curious about what everyone thinks about the origins of Min-kyu’s “allergy,” and how his feelings manifested in… hallucinations? Does this mean he’s potentially psychotic to start with, or is it just a child’s overactive imagination? It doesn’t seem like he sees monsters anymore, but clearly the somatic effect continues. Why did one stop and the other didn’t? Also, any speculations on Madame X’s identity?

I have a new favorite thing, though: how he calls Jia up (under her real President Jo identity) just to bicker. I thought there was no way to engineer a Jia/Aji-3 love triangle, but this is it, this is how! Phone calls! I can see how easy it is for him to fall for fauxbot-Jia who’s right in front of him, but how can we make him fall for real Jia? It’s also why the three-hour robot limit is great plot-wise, because it still leaves a zillion hours of the day empty, where he lolls around increasingly itchy for human contact. And this is a problem he hasn’t foreseen: that the human(oid) interaction he has with “Aji-3” makes him ever hungrier for it, now that he’s got a taste.

Thank you for the recap, @saya!
This show is getting better and cuter with every episode and I'm loving it so much!

Things that I love in this episode:
1. Min-kyu and Ji-A's growing friendship! I love how show was able to make our leads become friends first before actually falling in love with each other and it is a +1111111111111111 points in my dictionary. Falling in love with a robot (or not a robot) friend sounds cute on paper but I really hope that the show will be able to execute it really well especially since our male lead has some issues he needs to deal with. That scene where Min-kyu needed a friend the most made my heart ache a little bit so I'm just really glad that he can now open up with Ji-A easily regarding his concerns!
2. Ji-A joining the Pretty Squad had me rolling on the floor especially when Min-kyu canceled her promotion. HAHA. Also, her sunbae being rude to her had me wheezing like there's no tomorrow!
3. The tiny live crabs! Their cameo performance on Baek-gyun and Jin-kyu's serious conversation is totally great!
4. The promise Min-kyu made with Ji-A had me squealing so hard like there's no tomorrow. Imagine what can happen if these two were able to see a meteor shower together! *wink wink*
5. THAT ALMOST KISS *dies*

I think Min-kyu’s “allergy,” is relating about trust. He got it when he meets strangers or people he knew but he hasn't trust them enough. Since he thought Aji-3 is a Robot which won't betray him so he trust on it that's why Jia (which is President Jo - a human) can touch him without bring any harm on him.

Okay, please don't boo on me because this is the first time I wrote a long comments on recaps LMAO

Ooh this makes sense too. And I was thinking it was like guilt from his parents death manifesting itself. His mother hugging him caused her to bear most of the brunt of the accident and that's how he survived. Kinda like Harry Potter's mother's sacrifice caused him to survive Voldemort's curse.

I agree - he’s having a physical reaction and literally breaking out in hives due to some sort of panic attack when he’s around people. He lost his two protectors and instantly everyone else around him tried to use him, which likely caused hallucinations in his exhausted state. The hallucinations went away but the symptoms didn’t, and without any close friends there’s no neutral human to prove it’s not a real allergy.

Part of it is probably a full-body “go away” thing. If he has a medical condition they will all go away, and no one gets close enough to him (physically or emotionally) to betray him. It’s going to be REALLY bad when he finds out Jia was human all along

Saya, I just wanted to say that I simply love your recaps. Everytime there is a show I love I always hope and pray that you are the one recapping it. I like that your comments give an insight to what you feel about the show rather than just tell me what happened in it. You’re really an ace recapper and I’m so happy you’re recapping this beautiful show.

PS, I recently figured out this twitter business (@notnowsaya) and talk about other drama stuff there! I'm trying to tweet-review a drama a day for December, and sorta hang out there when not recapping!

This show is great. I'm glad you mentioned the privacy issue Ji-ahs and Min-kyus It makes me really uncomfortable. But other than that it is my favorite watch. When short on time this was the one I reached for. The scene with the two men getting increasingly covered by crabs every time the camera cut to them was hilarious. And that almost kiss had me shooting straight up in my chair, "Already?!?Yeah!"

Min-kyu and Jia are so cloyingly sweet together that I am willing to overlook some of the logic fails. But what is difficult for me is to get over the ick factor of Baek-gyun making a robot that is identical to his ex without her consent. This does not let me get onboard with when the show portrays their past relationship as cute and romantic (watching her eat meat through the window...) As an educator in higher ed, even though Jia was a consenting adult the fact that a professor as an authoritative figure is hitting on a student is still irksome for me. I hope what Saya said is true that the show won’t pursue a romantic arc between Baek-gyun and Jia in the present timeline. No need to have a second male lead love triangle since it seems like there will be one with the second female lead.

In any case the cast is doing an amazing job and this show is hitting all kinds of sweet spots for me!

I also agree with the huge "ick" factor of modeling your AI robot over your Ex...
However, I don't think Jia was his student. I think she just sought him out as a researcher etc.

I don't think she was his student either and that she only wanted to find someone to implement an idea she had.

I feel like the show is a little fuzzy on JA and BG's background and their relationship. In the show, their age difference is only 6 years. JA is 28 and BG is 34. I'm not sure how long ago it was when they dated.

Even though it is still creepy he made the robot in her image (but then again, we wouldn't have a drama if JA didn't look exactly like Aji-3), I thought it was sweet that he found a way to realize her umbrella idea. I think in terms of first gifts to woo a girl, especially for a girl who loves to invent things, it definitely beats flowers and chocolate. Even though he knew the idea wasn't marketable, I'm glad he still went ahead and implemented it.

Thanks for clarifying! It makes feel less crept out about their past relationship. The realization of her umbrella concept is sweet. Jia must be a hopeless romantic with her invention ideas being a lovers’ privacy screen and touch-sensitive heart lamp.

This was my favorite episode so far. When Jia apologized to sunbaenim pretty 3 for bumping into it, i went from liking her jia/aji3 to full love mode. Also having a serious conversation despite the crabs invasion was too funny for words. Random thoughts: 1) the start of the relationship between Jia and her ex was unexpectedly cute. 2) while I agree that as kids MK and CEO had a genuine loving relationship, 15 years of hate has soured that for good imo, even more so now that RE is back in the picture. 3) I continue to strongly dislike Jia's brother. He has no right to ask her ex why they broke up. Putting down a person -family even- just because she thinks differently from you and made different choices is inexcusable. Same reason explains why I can't see BG as a viable romantic option. There was a long discussion the other day comparing the faults of the two guys; I agree that both are immature and imperfect but Jia acknowledges that and calls them out on it. What matters for the prospects of a relationship is not age or who's prettier but rather how they treat Jia. Min-kyu is nice to her (at least as Aji3) and that's all that matters. Moreover, it is in Jia's nature to look out for people's needs and to care for them so it's obvious why she is drawn to him. Also, she loves to eat + he cooks = perfect match :-P (though i expect lots of bumps on the way). All-in-all I am thoroughly entertained.

for now they're both treating Jia as a necessary evil, which is kind of Jia's fault too because she's haughty and quick to form opinions on people (it's good that she's just as quick to change her mind when wrong). but we're shown how enamored BG was with her in the flashbacks and how caring and vulnerable MK can be with someone he trusts and I think they're both great second leads with lots of romantic potential.
I, too, am still not okay with BG using Jia's face and until we're shown why he made Aji1, I'm holding my judgement. I'm hoping for something like Big Hero 6 (Baymax) - she's so caring that he wanted to share that with the world, but if it's for selfish reasons, if he just wasn't able to let her go, then it's just simply creepy and unforgivable.
Still hating the brother as well, no matter how angry you are with someone you don't have the right to destroy their posessions.

To be fair to Jin-bae, he's not really asking for relationship details. It's a semi-rhetorical (not wholly) question about what on earth happened between them to leave Jia so hurt. A protective, "What did you do to my sister?" type of thing.

Since I'm here, I'll add! Sibling relationships, like any close family relationship (by which I mean degree of kinship, not intimacy), can be really complex (trust me, I have loads of them). Things can happen between them that seem unforgivable, and in some ways, they are, but ultimately, if you choose the relationship, you have to let go of them one way or another, whether by forgiving or forgetting.

And things can also balance out: Jin-bae, though he isn't necessarily emotionally supportive, has still played a caretaking role for her. Though in most eastern culture (that I'm aware of), it's pretty much a moral obligation for a man to take care of his parents/younger siblings, it's still a personal choice whether you fulfil that or not. The fact that Jin-bae has done until now has to count for something. I also feel like despite his harsh words to Jia in their argument (when he told her to get out of his house), he regretted it quickly enough. Also, not everyone is great with words and expressing emotion. I don't doubt the siblings' love for each other - Jia cares about him as much as he does about her. Unfortunately, that doesn't preclude the possibility of hurting each other, and love doesn't mean you can live with someone.

I agree with everything you said at an intellectual level but at an emotional level his behaviour still does not work for me. If my brother went to one of my exes --one that I'd never introduced to him or even mentioned-- and interrogated him about our past relationship he'd get a punch (my brother is wonderful so he wouldn't). I may understand to some degree where Jia's brother is coming from (he did go there to protect his sister), but I find his attitude towards Jia is demeaning, patronizing and boorish.

The showdown between Jin-bae and BG with the crabs hopping all over them is hilarious and one of the best visual gags of the year.

I thought flashback to MK"s past was well-done and very fairy-tale like. It had occurred to me in the previous episode that this drama is like a modern day fairytale (how else do you explain how it's okay for a kid to just live by himself and probably not going to school). I had seen MK as a Rapunzel trapped in a tower and then like Elsa who trapped herself in an ice castle, but now I see him also as the Beast in Beauty in the Beast.

Even though it's sad and totally unrealistic, I liked how little MK was able to pretty much give Yoo-chul's dad and the world the middle finger. The anger and resilience are impressive for a sheltered little kid.

Will we ever get to meet Madame X?!

I agree with you Saya, on needing the show to address the whole BG is watching all this footage of MK even though, if I recall correctly, MK was assured of privacy. But then again, MK is also naive in thinking privacy is that easy to come by. Even in this day and age, I have trouble believing my information is completely safeguarded.

I also like BG and MK's interactions. They really do like to test each other.

Definitely the Beast - a prince under a curse and his servants are turned into appliances.

BG assured MK that Aji3 was capable of privacy - which is probably true. But since they're using a fauxbot, they need the camera and audio access to allow Aji3 to prepare the answers for JJA - so no privacy.

Does "live crab" have any other meanings, a pun in Korean perhaps? Ha ha.

Underneath the tragedy of Min Kyu's painful past, there is the hilarious present with Aji-3, which makes me laugh. Thanks for the recap, it was a wonderful return trip to robot land, and the little boy who grew up all alone without anyone but his memories and his robot vacuum cleaner.

I'm almost positive that even if he kissed Aji-3 now, which I am sure he isn't, he still won't realize she's a human. He lives in a very structured world, and Aji-3 is his robot. Luckily for us Jia is just playing Aji-3, so I'm sure she'll be sure to make him suffer for how he treats her. He's going to grow out of his "allergy", and it's going to be both a bit painful but I suspect it will also be a hilarious one as well!

YSH is still the best thing in the show. He enhances every scene he is in with incredible nuances. Instead of getting mad at how douche sometimes KMK is, all I feel is sympathy and affection for his trauma that manifested in this human allergy.

This has to be my favourite episode so far. I watched the crab, pool and medicine patches scenes multiple times. LOL.

Still not rooting for the OTP yet because I feel like KMK is being fooled and his privacy is being invaded and that is unacceptable to me. How can I root for a romance when it's being watched by a team of scientists? Nothing is private between Jia and KMK.

As a YSH fan I am not happy at how easy it is to fool KMK. Jia is not even trying to be robotic. For 159 IQ, KMK sure is dumb. I wonder if Koreans cannot connect to YSH's first character who is not whip smart and hence the low ratings. I've been racking my brains for the low rating and coming up empty. So that's all I've got.

I also wonder when exactly KMK will fall for Jia? I hope he does not fall for her through just phone calls.

Yeah, for a good portion of this weeks' episodes, I kept thinking what a big idiot MK is. He's just too narrow-minded and oblivious to the obvious human cues Jia throws his way. I've got nothing against YSH, of course. The trend I'm picking up for any fiction is that the main character can never be too smart. Otherwise they can dodge most problems coming their way and there wouldn't be much of a plot.

I agree with the last part. Let MK fall in love with the real Jia!

I'm a huge fan of YSH but even I can't deny that KMK is a total idiot. Even the show characters keep calling him dumb because he does not see the obvious.

@justafan Robots do not act this human and I'm sorry but your reasons for low ratings sound like excuses because famous leads do not warranty high ratings. YSH is pretty famous and very well loved. There are many shows who had famous leads and still the ratings were bad.

I can only guess that Koreans cannot connect to the story and an "intelligent" hero who cannot see what is obvious.

and for the ratings, this is my opinion, 1. iirc IANR had alot of actors who turned down the main role
2. the show IANR is up against is in the thick of their story and the other one have more famous leads

The humor alone made these my favorite episodes so far. The beginning of episode 7 and the crabs were the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
I really loved how Jia is starting to see more of who Min Kyu is and how he in turn is connecting more with Jia/Aji. And I also thought the flashback to when Baek Gyun made the umbrella for Jia was really adorable so I'm curious as to why things didn't work out between them.

In time I also do hope the show deals with the issues about the invasion of privacy, the cousins relationship and so on. I also hope there's a way for Min Gyu to fall for the real Jia and not the robot. In a way I would want Min Gyu to find out the truth quickly so we can move on to these issues, on the other hand I mainly watch the show because it makes me laugh and I don't want to lose that.

This show is super cute! I am loving the porcupine Min-kyu. He looks threatening to everyone around him but you get his trust and he gets all cute and cuddly. All mushy on the inside.

I can't decide how I feel about the brother. At the same time I can see that he worries about his sister but on the other, he is not very considerate and supportive with his sister. He got to go to college thanks to his parent's help but she has to find a job by herself? Urgh, thanks bro.

One thing I noticed, because I teach coding to women/girls, is that while Jia comes up with the ideas, she doesn't seem to have the technical knowledge to physically create hence why she has to go to engineers to make them (which I noticed were both males). One thing show could have made better is for Jia to actually tinker and create her inventions instead of relying on others to do it. You don't need to be a genius to create things and in the age of the internet, everything can be learned. In the meantime, I am excited for her heart lamp. I am sure it will come in handy soon.

for the umbrella - you'd use an electrochromic film. it is probably easier to code than the lights. But i don't know if state of the art allows that much folding.

The heart light is probably a bit more difficult - coding-wise. it might not be able to run of a cell network given different radios involved (and permissions, SIM activation etc) if it ran off a wi-fi connection - there'd be code for network association, security and then attach it to a MAC address? but that makes it pretty hard coded. Simpler might be to use a bluetooth connection and have it triggered by cell phone/tablet - which would allow you to create an app to also turn it on and off through the phone. It is doubtful the value would be worth the cost, though.

oh that's interesting, I had no idea electrochromic film existed! and I completely forgot that the lights rely on wifi - I just remembered they react to the touch, good call! they do seem a lot more complicated now.

Electrochromic film/glass is used commercially in those fishbowl type meeting rooms and offices. With a flip of a switch you can make the walls opaque for more privacy.

2

I am a software developer myself so I am enjoying the technical debate. :D @vivanesca and @tummy.

I like the idea of the mobile app. It's probably the easiest way to connect the lamps to the wi-fi. Also, that way you can grab your phone and sends message knowing the person is awake and thinking of you. I also wondered how they turned off the lamps so the app is a good idea. If you have an app though, the lamp doesn't really need to be triggered with touch but I suppose the purpose of the lamp is to bring light but also warmth so touching it to activate it might be better.

I had never heard about electrochromic film before. I am learning things every day. :D

Touch sensors are the core of this invention, I think. IMO Jia wanted to literally touch someone's heart (it's a pretty great metaphor I can't wait what they're going to do with it). I think they just turn off by themselves after a few minutes? At first I thought you were supposed to hold it until you want it off, but I guess it's like an 'I'm thinking about you' signal. Having an app might also enable customization (the light could pulsate or blink, change color and intensity) and notify the user about the lamp's activity, so it's a good idea all around.

I hope his thirst for human interaction and just love for Jia will allow him to forgive the lies that Santa Maria and Jia have created. Hopefully by the time the truth is revealed, Min Kyu might have opened up his heart enough to be more human himself

This episode had great comedic scenes that felt naturally funny and not forced.
Ji and Min kyu's phone calls are one of my favourite things in this show. I really like Jia, she sees the world so differently. She sees the small needs of someone that people tend to overlook or sneer. She is an inventor and all inventors tend to be quirky and their ideas might not always work or be commercial and because of that her life, especially her relationship with her brother, is rocky. But she doesn't give up on her ideas, and you can always see that glitter in her eyes whenever she talks about her inventions. I totally understand why Baek-gyun fell for her.
On another note, Min-Kyu has such a beautiful smile! You can't help smiling back when he smiles, it's so natural and quirky

It's Kim Min Kyu. Of COURSE he wouldn't notice.
But anyway, am I the only person here who felt a Seo Jin Woo vibe when he narrated his childhood? Ya know, talking about memories. Probably just me, cuz I just LOVE to find any connection possible between Min Kyu and Yoo Seung Ho's other characters he'd played in the past. I love how open he is with Jia/Aji3 and how Jia is content with seeing him so bright and happy. That's friendship. I'm glad he didn't kiss her cuz IMO it's waaay too early in the series for romance. He doesn't see her as a woman in the slightest; maybe a friend, a pet (that adorable cheek grabbing scene XD), but at least he doesn't see her as a living girl YET. I really like that.
Jin Bae... I wonder who's side he'll ultimately choose? Min Kyu's? Yoo Chul's? I can't tell. I don't dislike him as much as I did in past episodes cuz I see a bit more depth to his character.

Baek Gyun is in a bit of a bind. He looked remorseful enough so he might want to change Aji3's face. And his missing part should arrive within a few days (drama time). I don't guess KMK is going to be at all happy if the face changes. Not sure if KMK finds out about fauxbot before the switch happens - it would probably be funnier if he didn't. So another bickering session...ha ha!!

I can sort of relate to JJA's brother. He's had to give up his dreams of being a lawyer to work for the company. So he sees JJA's pursuit of her, thus far, financially unrewarding dream a bit of a slap in the face. But, fundamentally, he is not incorrect - neither of them appear to be financially sound and he may resent having given up his dream to support a sister who is still, in his mind, unrealistic.

The point that bothers me now is this whole Madame X thing. Which seems a bit of an unneeded contrivance and makes things a bit more unrealistic and complicated. For now, it doesn't seem like it could be anyone that we already saw onscreen. Maybe YC's mum (is she alive? I don't recall seeing her so far) One would believe that any living relative of KMK would have shown up after the accident 15 years ago - if nothing else to claim guardianship of KMK.

This show is funny but more than that its conceptual underpinnings are pure genius. Behind the laughs and the crabs (god I loved that scene) there is such a serious message here about gender. It's amazing seeing it in a kdrama.

It reminds me of Do Bong Soon actually. Of course, that show got derailed by the OTP and didn't follow through on some of the main themes. (It was a great OTP though) but before it did that it was examining a lot of the same issues.

So far we have a much-older man entranced by a child who, when she has the audacity to show autonomy and break it off, builds an obedient, docile robot version of her. The scene where he first saw her she is particularly child like: dressed like a doll and enthusiastically eating.

Then we have a man who can only handle people he can completely control. He’s becoming obsessed with a robot girlfriend because he's too scared a real woman will hurt him. His motivated reasoning at this point is extraordinary and how whole 'Pretty' thing is just outstandingly sexist.

On top of this, we have a brother whose success is utterly dependent on him receiving preferential treatment for being born a man. He gets angry at the female lead whenever he can't control her and wields the financial advantage he has to force her to his will. The only time he's seen to defend her is if he thinks her form is being appropriated by another man.

You mentioned the voyeurism of Jia's ex-boyfriend literally observing and judging every aspect of her behaviour. And don't even get me started on the whole 'Master' thing,

And all of this? Is in a show called "I Am Not a Robot". And the female lead? Is definitely *not a robot*.

So far it's genius.

I haven't seen First Life yet but it's on my list.

It's very early days for this drama but I want to give it the benefit of the doubt. Judging by the comments of viewers who actually want him to kiss the robot programmed to obey him who's actually a real girl financially forced to obey him, it's possible they won't follow through.

so , um in your words you think the sexist and entitled characters are genius because it is like a satire?
but it is also a trap when these characters make us think, perhaps, oh, but this is how men are. It is also using a stereotype. where are the normal guys? and so I hope there is more to these guys than their sexism and entitledness. or maybe a male robot will come and charm Ji A away from Min Kyu.

Unfortunately I don't think it's satire. This kind of sexism is far more ingrained than we like to think. Society constantly tries to put women in a box. The fact this did it literally is what makes it so compelling. So more metaphor than satire unfortunately.

But I don't think for a second that the show isn't going to give us good character growth and that's what I like about it. This is all set up. Min Kyu in particular is going to change a lot over the course of this drama. I hope the others do too.

I think this show is best when it's taken in the spirit that it was meant in - fluffy, light, whimsical. Suspend disbelief! Trust that the show will wave plot points in your face where it counts (or at least hint wildly at them)! Haha.
I agree with Saya's point that Min Kyu's treatment of Ji A makes sense given that he sees her as a robot. I actually think the show makes it pretty clear that it /is/ to be taken in that light, what with Ji A's comments about how 'this should be romantic but it feels like he's treating me like a dog'. I also think that the romance between the leads is quite a simple thing, at its core - it's the 36 questions stuff, isn't it, about vulnerability and how that fosters closeness. It's not about the fact that she's of a lower status than him (though she is, ofc)/her identity as a robot, it's about the fact that he thinks a robot won't betray him like the people in his life have. That allows him to open himself up to her in ways he wouldn't otherwise, which then opens up opportunities for him to receive warmth in return. I think that's actually /needed/ for any relationship to deepen. What I want, though, is for the vulnerability to go both ways - i.e. more room for Ji A to be open with him, as opposed to just being moved by his backstory (and maybe that's where Min Kyu X non-Aji3-Ji A interactions come into play?? I can hope).

I like the fact that Min Kyu's problems revolve around attachment/trust - it's like we're getting the cold-chaebol trope but with a more developed explanation? It makes sense - if I were betrayed by adults and friends that I/my parents trusted, made to live a lonely existence by said adults just because I wouldn't concede, not have the human interactions/feedback that would help me understand what others were thinking, AND had to survive in the dog-eat-dog business world, I would probably end up with similar issues. Even Ri El is saying that she wants to marry him because he meets certain practical criteria - using him, basically (though with the best of intentions, and he benefits too... but it would hurt if what you wanted was for her to love you for you, lol).
I also really like YSH's acting! I haven't watched any other projects of his before, but he pulls off this tsundere stuff well.
