Melo-thriller Misty holds its first script read

JTBC drama Misty, directed by PD Mo Wan-il (Beautiful Mind, Sirius), is about the nation’s top TV anchor Go Hye-ran, played by Kim Nam-joo (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly). She becomes the leading suspect in a murder case, and her husband, played by Ji Jin-hee (Second to Last Love), ends up as her legal counsel in a case that tests their love to the brink.

This mystery melodrama-thriller just released photos of its first script read with cast and crew. It’s actually been quite a while since Kim Nam-joo’s last drama, which was You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly six years ago. For a while, she was known as the drama ratings queen, successively dominating with rom-coms like Queen of Reversals and Queen of Housewives, before the massive hit that was You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly. I’m looking forward to her comeback as a high-profile public figure who suddenly becomes public enemy number one, in a role that will feature her dramatic chops rather than her usual rom-com style.

Ji Jin-hee will play her husband, a public defender who comes from prosecutor roots. Jeon Hye-jin (Romance Hunter) plays a woman who willingly sacrifices herself to become a silent supporter. Musical actor Im Tae-kyung makes his first debut in dramas in Misty as a mysterious figure with a hidden secret. And then there’s a whole slew of veterans in the cast who were present at the script read including Ahn Nae-sang (Temperature of Love), Lee Kyung-young (Argon), Kim Bo-yeon (You’re Too Much), and Lee Ah-hyun (Love Returns).

JTBC Friday-Saturday drama Misty will begin airing early next year on January 26, following Untouchable.

OMG, I just posted a question on my fanwall and deleted it. Might as well use this post for my question. So,

Why is the police so interested on blackbox of Hye Ran’s car, but not Kevin Lee’s? Like was it broken during accident? It seems like it’s better to know where did he go before the accident, right?

I think more than thinking her blackbox might have something in it, they are suspicious since it went missing. So even if initially they didn't think it was too important, now they do since it has been missing. We know from the recent episodes that Go Hye-ran and Kevein Lee had a conversation in her car about how she missed him at times and how she might not really love her husband, but needs him. And then they proceed to make out. That was clearly her attempt at manipulating him into stopping his crazy sabotage. But GHR knows how badly this might reflect on her if the police get a hold of it, so she might have removed the blackbox?

Hyeran also said its the only thing that could exonerate her. Going by the assumption that Hyeran isnt the killer, i think it may be a third part (possibly killer!) that removed it to frame Hyeran!

Oh could be! I actually assume she didn't kill him. I don't think that's her style. She would much rather bury him under scandal and destroy his career instead of killing him in cold blood. I suspect that maybe it might be the wife who did it?

After watching episode 6, we all knew what happened to the blackbox exactly and who took it in the first place. But now I wonder, HR did not seem bother to get back her blackbox? I mean, her reputation is on stake if the video of her making out with Kevin is out? Or she didn't mind of it getting leaked because that would save her name from being a murderer?

I don't know if Hyeran wasn't anxious to get it back. It seemed like there was no way to tell who had it and so she decided to deal with the problems she had at hand and deal with that problem when it arises. I also think Hyeran was pretty sly with her words to show that she wanted to end things with Kevin on a happy note and to show she was being blackmailed into kissing him so she figured in the worst case scenario at least she wouldn't be a murderer?

Good point! I also think it may be because the whole car went into flames after the car accident? It may have been damaged but maybe it’ll come back into play in a different episode!

So far, I'm at episode 6. I love where Misty is going right now. Especially in terms of Gu Hye-ran's character. She's so manipulative and smart that it’s really hard to know when she's telling the truth and when she's lying. There are so many conflicting accounts of her life, relationship, and feelings that you are always left guessing how much of what she says is the truth. Like the scene with her mother-in-law which I found particularly intriguing. When she kneels before her MIL and tells her the reason she's so ambitious was because she wants her FIL's approval, I actually though there was some glimpse of truth to that. Like that maybe she knew no one would approve of her since it’s been hinted she doesn’t come from a very good background and she wanted to prove her worth to them. It could also partially be that she wanted her husband to be happy. But mostly I think there is some kind of history with the FIL and GHR.

I think what she said to her MIL regarding the abortion is partially truth. Getting the recognition of her FIL is not the main reason why she did abortion, but it's one of the reasons why. She just used that excuse for her advantage when the truth is, she really just wanted to succeed and achieve her dream.

Yes I think the way her mother has brought her up, GHR looks at kids as something that could hinder her success. She might have kids later at some point, but they have never been a priority for her the way climbing up the ladder has been.

But to see her manipulating people with just the right amount of half truths mixed in with lies is so fascinating! I wonder if she knew her husband would hear all this and change his mind. It seems like she knew he would come home soon and maybe she timed it so he could also see her heel down. I think he was truly moved when he got that flashback. But maybe he realized she wasn't telling the whole truth later on when she told him she got an offer from the Blue House and asked him to not divorce her yet.

Either way, her mind really works in such a fascinating way! I'm so hooked!

But one thing I was confused with was that she didn't fully use that circumstance to her advantage! I thought she would try to use it to turn Taewook's heart back around. At the moment, there was a huge turn in Taewook's expressions. Taewook was finally softening up to Hyeran for the first time in years, but Hyeran threw that away when she said that she couldn't divorce Taewook because of her ambitions.

I literally yelled at the screen, "WHAT?" She could've totally manipulated that but she didn't! I believe she was actually oblivious to Taewook's softening heart. Perhaps that means there's more truth to what she said to her MIL than we think.

I think her husband might be the one person she doesn't enjoy manipulating to such a large extent. She might not explain her old relationship to Kevin Lee because she didn't want to to go drag the past into her current relationship. Which makes me think she might actually have feelings for him and doesn't want to manipulate him the way she does literally everyone else.

3

I want her to tell, at least, one person the truth. I wish she’d told Eun Joo the truth. I’m trying to figure out why she doesn’t want anyone knowing about her past with Kevin Lee. I mean I get it now but before he died and all. But then again, it wouldn’t stay true to her character to have her revealing everything to people. And let’s not forget that her hoobae that has her and Kevin Lee on camera.

2

@esther I think the reason why she doesn't want anyone knowing about her past relationship with Kevin is probably the same reason she never pretends she was never close to Eun-joo. Something must have happened to her in the past that has made her wish to hide all her old relationships. I've a feeling it has something to do with her brother going to jail.

2

OMG, I was thinking the same thing. HR finally gets her husband to actively side with her in front of her MIL then she reverts back to "I am still the cold ambitious woman you resented and here's my emotional wall AGAIN." Why????

0

I feel like GHR might have had a shady/abusive past. Maybe her father was abusive to her. Which is why we never see her or her mother talk about him. I have a feeling she might have killed him and her oppa (the guy in the jail) took the blame for it. That’s what her mother might have meant when she said she knows her secret. I initially had thought she was talking about GHR’s relationship with Kevin Lee before her actual wedding. Or even about her abortion. But it doesn’t make sense that that would be the secret the mother was alluding to since GHR seemed particularly shocked when she learned her mother knew.

I think the secret really was that her mother knows she killed her father probably in self-defense. And then she let her brother take the blame. This might also be why she is obsessed with power. Maybe she wants to free her brother? Maybe she wants to take revenge on the prosecutor for sending her brother to prison? After all, the only person with power to question a prosecutor is someone working in the Blue House. And that would explain her obsession with getting enough power to hurt him back.

EP 6 was a gem. So many questions arising and so many cliffhangers but I don't mind! The only thing I mind is that the wait is 6 days for a few answers 😭

Question: Who do you think the killer is?

Personally, I have a list of potential suspects ranked. TL;DR pretty much everyone LOL
1. Kevin Lee's manager
Reasons: He could've been fired and a scuffle may have ensued for the head injury. He has a sister to take care of so he decides to cover it up with a car accident.
Reasons not: I don't think he is the brightest person to be able to plan the whole thing and try to frame Hyeran.
2. Eunjoo
Reasons: Potential divorce wasn't something she was planning especially with a child on the way. Met him somewhere outside again to talk and hit him hard out of rage.
Reasons not: I don't think she's strong/tall enough to bring down a brick on her husband's head. How would she have avoided the CCTV in front of her house if she went out?
3. Han Jiwon
Reasons: She lost a ton because of her relationship with Kevin and he did nothing to help her situation. She could've called him out and brick hit.
Reasons not: Physically not possible (maybe with an accomplice?). She has too much to lose to try to plan a murder of a high profile celebrity.
4. Kang Taewook very unlikely ( PLEASE)
Reasons: Suspicions between Kevin's relationship with Hyeran caused rage to hit him over. He knows enough about the law to know what would be the best way to create the perfect crime.
Reasons not: 1. I need HyeRan and Taewook to have a happy ending and being a killer would hinder that. 2. Taewook takes a lot of pride in his righteousness when it comes to the law and keeping the law and his principles.
5. Kwak Ki Suk - HyeRan's puppy cute hoobae (who didn't show up once this whole episode 😭)
Reasons: He has the strength and power to. He had overheard the conversation between Hyeran and Kevin so he could've tried to confront him to leave her alone and brought a brick down in the heat of the moment. He's an investigative reporter so he could possibly know the ways to create the perfect crime.
Reasons not: He's the puppy!! Leave the puppy alone and show his face more!!! But for real, he seems to have equally strong principles on truth and justice as Hyeran and Taewook do. I doubt he would have even thought of it.

I mostly suspect the wife Eunjoo of being the killer though your points on how she couldn't be are also excellent. But so far she has the most motive for me. Also, the other reporter who was having an affair with him could have done it maybe? I wan't so badly for Kang Taewook to be the killer if only because of how freaking dramatic and shocking that would be for him to be revealed as the killer! But yes, he's too righteous to do that. And his relationship with Hye-ran wouldn't survive it since I think one of the reasons she likes him is because of his rigid views on truth and justice.

OMG you're so on point! I suspect them all and the reasons and reasons not are the same thing that I've in mind as well! I really really don't want it to be Reporter Kwak and Tae Wook. At this point, I suspect Eun Joo, but she might hire someone to do the dirty work, but then again, it's kinda scary for her to kill her husband for a mere argument. But you never know, the ones with innocence look sometimes can be the scariest one. The drama also keeps on emphasizing on the unknown variable, so it might be someone we never thought of? It might be an accident as well, like there's no intention to kill, but it happened anyway.

That's very true! There is always a possibility of the unknown!

I even thought of 1 more theory; that our Jail Guy was the one who hired someone while inside the jail to kill Kevin. This seems likely because he seems like he wants to protect Hyeran at all costs and has heard about a potential relationship in jail. He seem to have sources too, I mean, how did he find the manager's sister's hospital bed after being in jail and not knowing anyone for 19 years???
But I also think it's unlikely because Jail Guy seems to be the type to take care of things on his own and not let other people do his "dirty" work. But we never know right? Prison changes people 😭

I do like this list of possible suspects and your reasons why and why not they could or could not be.

While I still have to watch episodes 5 and 6, I have to say that the first person I suspected was Go Hye-ran's father-in-law. ..... While we have no proof (up to the episodes I've watched), I find it difficult to believe that father-in-law hasn't kept surveillance on Go Hye-ran. It may be that over time, father-in-law has found that Hye-ran cares about the same things he does ---- reputation, image, appearances, etc.

If father-in-law found out that something and/or someone is in close proximity and presents a threat (to her and by extension, her husband's family), he certainly has the means to "take care of it."

Also, in episode 4, Eun-joo called Ji-won's phone. Who tipped Eun-joo off as to who to call? ..... Unless Eun-joo hired someone to follow her husband. Hmmm.

Can't wait to watch episodes 5 and 6 to find out more!

It could be! Because he knows about HR getting into Blue House and he wants to get rid of Kevin Lee because he's become a barrier/burden to HR to become press secretary. He might knew about HR's scandal and wanted to clean up the mess for her. But then again, how on Earth her brooch end up in KL's car? It could be that the one who killed KL and the one who took the opportunity to frame HR are two different party.

That darn brooch! I've been throwing around several scenarios for the brooch ending up where it did. Just when I think I'm close to having a plausible explanation .... it throws everything else into disarray. Ugh!

That brooch is either a big time detail or it's the writer's very well crafted distraction from the real details! Gosh, this is good.

SHOOT! I never even thought of the Father in law! I'll add him up high on my list! How did he slip my mind??

He tells Taewook, "It doesn't matter what the truth is, but what looks like the truth is what really matters."

His morals are definitely bendable to the point that he can carry that out with a hired/trusted person. We haven't seen too much of him either but the actor is a big name, so I think there's definitely more to know about him too!

Hmm. I like this theory of the FIL as a suspect. I actually never saw him as such. I always expected that he had some time in Hye-ran's past. His words that you described above could allude to something he did when he was a prosecutor. I feel like he framed Hye-ran's brother as a criminal instead of looking at the facts or something. And hye-ran wanted revenge on him so she got together with her husband. But she fell in love with him in the process. Maybe that's why she doesn't tell him about her past because it has to do with her brother and FIL

1

In episode 4 Eunjoo called Hyeran's phone as well! I think Jiwon told Eunjoo about Kevin & Hyeran's past, or that Kevin was going to find Hyeran for a fling? That's why Eunjoo so desperately called Hyeran, pleading her to pick up...

Maybe this is revealed in later episodes - previews suggest that Eunjoo seems like she wants to do harm to Hyeran as well... what a fascinating show!

I know we always speculate about weather or not Hye-ran loves her husband or even if she loved Kevin Lee. But let's talk about Kevin today. Do you think he had genuine feelings for Hye-ran? Maybe it was all just lust? Maybe his ego was hurt when she left him and he became obsessed with her? I have mixed feelings about this since he seemed like a pretty shitty person tbh. He cheated on his wife numerous times and didn't seem to care about her feelings. Maybe Hye-ran was the only one he could ever love? Thoughts?

Required fields are marked *

I think the feelings were mutual in the beginning. Hyeran seemed to have loved Kevin and so did he. But when she decided on Taewook instead of him, it changed into an obsession on how he could show her that he was the man she lost out on.

He seriously is a horrible person. I don’t think she was the only thing one he could love. He created his own monster in him that made him think so. Plenty of people get their heart ripped to shreds but dont turn out like he did. He used her “abandonment” as an excuse to justify all the actions he took without expressing it. It even looks like he used it as a way to get to Eunjoo (potentially) since Eunjoo knows that he was rejected by a former lover before meeting her.

Oh yes! He's quite a horrible person but a fascinating character nevertheless. Initially in the first couple of episodes I did think they were still in love and would have an affair behind their spouses' backs. But I like this turn of events much better. I especially loved the car confession scene right before Kevin died. When he asks Hye-ran if she loved him, she replies that she did and still thinks about him from time to time and doesn't want to end up hating him for his actions. I love that he softened at that. I feel like he took a genuine look at himself in the moment and acknowledged that they have both done some horribly manipulative things. But in his obsession with her, he just seemed to see this as a game they were both playing to one up each other. At that point, I don't think he even cared much about his career anymore. He had done what he set out to do: prove to Hye-ran he could be rich and successful. And from this point on its all about getting her to come back to him. Its so very twisted! And I'm loving every second of it!

Just completed Episode 4 - I really hope Taewook isn't the murderer.... I feel like that'll be a good twist to send off the excellent drama it's been so far, but I really want a happy ending for our lead couple.

Hye Ran is such a well written character. Whenever she does something, it is difficult to tell whether it's genuinely because of her principles or because she's manipulative. Like with the Kam reporting in episode 4 - she made herself look good for the Blue House job, took her revenge on Kevin Lee, tried to curry favour with her husband, etc. This makes her so hard to read! What does she feel for Taewook and what does she feel for Kevin??

Honestly at this point I'm not sure I care about who the murderer is - as long as it's not Taewook. I just want to see Taewook happy! And I'm not up to date yet, but I can't wait to find who the mystery prison guy is!
