I’m loving Just Between Lovers too. The best music soundtrack since que sera sera imo. I wasn’t expecting much from the description that was sent out before the show aired, but am so glad I started watching.

I will go ahead and say it had the best 1st week of any kdrama(the dramas i tried/watched) in 2017.
15 minutes aired and i started to vouch for the Heroine.
Jun Ho looked like Baek aka Kang Joon and sometimes gave vibe of Jin Goo. Maybe because of the hairstyle.
Cinematography isn't something unique but well embeded into the show. Music is beautifully done so far and thankfully not much of Noise Pollution. I also think Music will enhance the experience manifold.
This show actually is accentuating the cold of winter and i give this show 7.5/10.
Objectively i give 7 or 7.5. Heart is fully satisfied and gave 8.5

Oh that Que Sera Sera soundtrack. Whenever Moonlight by W & Whale turns up on my iPhone shuffle, I look around me because I expect something exciting to happen. Even if that's just me throwing away my employee pass and walking away in the sunlight.
Now I have to watch Just Between Lovers, just because you said this.

It’s worth at least watching the first episode. The main melody seems to be based on the song Mad World. It is definitely different (and better) than a stereotypical drama ost. I hope you like it!

I just watched the first three episodes and really liked it - so thanks for the recommendation @casserole and @CatoCat. The only problem that I have with the soundtrack is that I keep thinking the song is Mad World (maybe the Jasmine Thomspon version) and that track keeps playing in my head!

I dislike winters. I have this winter allergy where my fingers swollen because of cold. its called Chilblian. More annoying than most of kdrama content.
@sancheezy i was waiting for december and got news about few manga coming to an end in upcoming months. December ruined. Live-Action ruined The Blade of the Immortal.

MGL - it's hit. But usually on Sat they got lower than Sun slot, so not a surprise here if on Sat slot it goes back to 30% something. There are many epi to go, but exceeding 40% is already great achievement.

I also really enjoyed the premiere of Just Between Lovers. All the elements are just right so far. I was impressed by the supporting cast that JTBC rounded up. No noise pollution. The drama is showing Seoul from the back streets, with different angles and shots to your typical rom-com. It feels lived in, a slightly dirty and sweaty world. It has more of a movie feel perhaps?

Title is cliche and has typical coincidence meetups but overall product is of high quality. You rightly pointed out the camera angles.
I wouldn't like any more physical proximity. I feel this show isn't for PDA or aggressive physical posture.

Totally agree, plus the JH's outfits looks cheap and worn out despite that he's changing everyday but his outfits resemble his poor life, also the female lead always holding the same bag unlike other dramas where the poor girl changes her bag every day and wear cool outfits, also her hair is simple whether it's color or styling, i like the realism of this.

It is a really nice treat like a mulled wine in christmas markets. There's a cold humid weather out there but you, with your cup of this sweet cinnamon-cloves-orange red living water in your hands, are enjoying the chatter of children, old folks, good craftsmen and if the snow starts to fall you're trying to catch the biggest snow flake with your mouth and nobody minds if you look like a fool.

Where I grew up we did have only St. Nicolas on the 6th of decembre (the previous night children clean their boots and put them next to the doors or windows and in the morning there are small packages of sweets and fruits waiting for them) coming to see children with an angel and a devil by his side ( we were so scared of the devil) and if you were good he'll give you some treats, if not a stick to be punished. Christmas was about family, not so much about presents, it changed thou. I remember to get warm socks as a present and some books and I was very happy with it. If I would like something expensive I tried to find a way to make some money and I bought it after. Later we had our christmas dinner in my grandparent's place which was so magical and happy that we didn't like to open our presents . It's a pitty that it turned this way - christmas decorations starting right after haloween, people running everywhere to buy and buy and not enjoying those little moments like first snow, mulled wine, christmas carrols, deep cleaning of the house (it takes days, because you open some boxes and go trough forgotten memories).
I love the smell of a coffee but I can't drink it. 6 years ago when I was in Czech Republic during winter to see some friends I fell for a hot apple juice with cinnamon and cloves and the amazing energy university towns only provide...
In Russia they have white beard Mr. Frost, it's a charming fairy-tale. He can makes your wish come true. I hope that we will enjoy this drama like a nice coffee, rich mulled wine, fruity punch, lovely hot whiskey / hot port or an amazing hot apple juice in a nice place ;-).

I'm currently watching I'm not a Robot and Black Knight, and I've taken note how this week's episode touches on recognising someone. *Spoiler* For the former it came in the form of the fake-robot recognising the man despite his allergic reaction, and for the latter it came in the form of recognising longest childhood playmates.
It's not that deep or profound of a thought, but I do like the idea of a special someone recognising me even after months have flown and years have gone by, even after my baby fats disappear and wrinkles appear, and even after I morph into someone whose physical appearance I myself don't even recognise.
Sorry for this incoherent rambling; I must have been feeling oddly pensive today :-)

He's really a good actor, he's nailing this role, i like his character it's well written, and he gives life to the character with his amazing expressions, I couldn't watch Doctors because of the plot I dropped it after 2 episodes, Black Knight is better, up to now i am liking the drama although I still don't like SSK awkward expression and acting but she's much better than Go Ah Ra which stole the crown for the most bad actress in my book from SSK. After tolerating GAR in Black because I loved the plot and the other actors i can do the same here.

Kim Rae-won is very great on his own, but when you put him with Shin Se-kyung together, then that's when my problem starts. Something is really lacking between them. I don't know how can I buy their love story. 😑 I'm more invested with Shanon's story to be honest.

Yes, something is off about SSK's movement and expressions, she annoys me when she keeps moving her head, she's the typical poor hardworking heroine, doesn't do anything except being the love interest or might end the curse, (the young HR is more lovable), SJH's character is more interesting and of course better acting even Beak Hee the other mysterious witch is more interesting, and watching episode 4 made me wonder is she evil or good she seems on his side because she's repenting of her evil deeds in the past, i also like her honestly.

Hae-ra is a typical kdrama heroine but in the hand of right actress, she will be more loveable and endearing. She might be the key to break the curse, but for now her character is plain and the acting isn't helping either. I don't think SSK is that bad (I have seen many worst actressess than her) but in my opinion she is lacking in romance and chemistry department which then make her scene with the hero to be quite dull. She might be better in some badass role as in her sageuks. She seems to be a little better here than her previous drama though, her acting isn't as cringeworthy, maybe she is more comfortable in this team.

December 16, 2017 at 1:46 AM
It is really hard to pinpoint what about SSK's acting is distracting. One thing for me is that, although I find her beautiful, I never feel she inhabits her character for example we discuss "Ji-Ho" but always talk about SSK. JSM has inhabited her character so we no longer "see" the actor.
Best I can guess is that she cannot get herself into the character's emotional state - and our subconscious notices that her micro-expressions don't match what her character is trying to convey emotionally. So our minds tell us something is "fake" although we cannot easily pinpoint it.

December 16, 2017 at 2:21 AM
Well, I'm in minority who dropped BTLIOF and also do not find Jung So-min is very engaging as an actress but all I can say she is better than SSK, although her acting in FIS which was the last time I watched her was quite dull and I kept seeing "Jung So-min" instead of her character. SSK got some charisma on screen and very beautiful but her acting lacks of emotional depth, and she also lacks certain charm to make a plain character to be more endearing.

December 15, 2017 at 9:44 PM
I recommend you give Doctors a try because the drama does become much better once they leave the "back story" and get to the present.
KRW's character in Doctors and Black Knight are pretty similar. (bloody well identical to me) Perhaps a bit too goody two shoes and perfect but it is still pretty early in Black Knight - so it could still develop.

Gosh, it's been a while since I've been able to get to a notebook or a desktop computer instead of attempting to use my phone to see this site. I've missed this community! Happy anniversary to me! Today marks 16 years of marriage. Woo hoo!
It's been a crazy week, with ups and downs. Actually, it's been pretty crazy since I last was on here, I think! Just a quick list of the last half of 2017, and that'll do, right?
July: My 20-year high school reunion was held, but I was busy at the time on a vacation to Nevada with my husband (Las Vegas for two days, then drove to Great Basin National Park for five days). This trip marked the farthest west I'd traveled in the continental US since I was FOUR (I'm 38 now, almost 39; yikes...). Also reconnected with a high school friend and we started walking for exercise; I lost 20 pounds!
August: I accepted a part-time job helping an elderly lady run her horse boarding farm that's not too far from my house by cleaning stalls and general care for the 11 horses that live there. I'm one of many workers there who rotate taking care of everyone, and they are all so sweet! So ended my "retirement" that started in January this year, haha. Everyone except for me knew I'd get bored fast!
September: Was that the month Hurricane Irma swept through Florida? *Looks it up on Google* Wow, yes it was. Everyone did fine, both at home and at the horse farm where I work. We were without power for 5 days, but we did fine. No damage on our property with the exception of some limbs down in the back corner of our property.
October: Can't really recall anything huge happening in that month -- phew!
November: Nothing happened until Black Friday, when we bought a car seemingly out of the blue. I knew that my husband had been eyeing this new car, but couldn't find one that met his exact requests, so I had assumed he had stopped looking. "But it's a good deal" turned into us becoming the owners of a 2017 Mustang GT with a manual transmission (yay for stick-shift cars! I really like driving manuals, especially since we have no real hills here in FL; I'd be in real trouble elsewhere).
December: Tough and sweet all at once. Tuesday this week we had to put one of my dogs to sleep from a cancer that was growing so fast. But at least he didn't suffer for long, and I'd adopt him again from that high-kill shelter in a split second. Good boy, Watson. Find our other dogs up there, Wingnut and Bolt! They'll show you around! Last weekend I broke out of my shyness and introverted tendencies and attended THREE Christmas parties (I seriously have no idea what I was thinking when I agreed to all of them; must have felt pretty social at the time, lol)! Today is my 16th wedding anniversary and hubby comes home from work travel tomorrow. Then Monday we are crossing off a few items on my "I've never seen/done..." list. I've never been on a train, so we're going on a cross-country trip from the Orlando area in...

Thank you! Yup, people thought I was pregnant when I got married 10 days after getting my BA degree. My husband is two years younger, haha! I simply found a great guy who actually knew about all my flaws and my obsession with horses and STILL wanted to marry me; why wait? Why play the games? So there we are.
I have several of the sweet people at the barn offer to let me ride their horses, but I haven't been on a horse in years. My two in my own back yard are like big, pampered dogs, just pets! I've been in too many accidents to feel confident about riding alone, so I enjoy them from the ground. Maybe next year I'll get my courage up enough to take these folks up on their offers...

It'll come when you're not looking for it! I stopped trying to find somebody and finally realized my friend was actually interested in me on a romantic level. I kept saying that I was too busy to have a boyfriend (going to college at night full-time, working one nearly full-time job and up to four part-time jobs to pay for my first horse to be boarded, etc.), but he was irresistible after a few months of denying how I felt. And we've been together ever since. It'll come when you least expect it!
So I think I see what goals I have for 2018: Get fit enough to stay on a horse in all paces (more than a walk); and build the confidence to actually get on again. Thanks for helping me figure that out!

Hi Hi! Not yet. I'm staying with my dad for a week to breathe. And you know, build up the annoyance required to move several hours away from everyone you know! HA! (its totally worked. I'm so over that man.)
@rentenmann It'll come when I least expect it reminds me of the song by Garfunkle and Oats 29/31 https://youtu.be/H-gfxjAaZg0
(I don't expect it at all now, so I guess it'll happen any time now)
Good luck with your goals for 2018! I just figured out my own goals for 2018: be more proactive and think things through.

I can't watch movies like that! I read the book until the dog started to get old and creaky, and stopped reading it. I've had to say goodbye to two horses, two dogs, and two cats so far, so I know what to expect and how much it hurts, so I definitely don't want to experience it while watching TV/movies! :-)
Class reunions are not something I find fun. I had moved at three weeks into my freshman year of high school, just across the county, but I may as well have moved across the country. I didn't see those people whom helped shape my very young years again until social media became mainstream. I see the people I want to see there, and then we plan for fun things to do in-person from there. Oddly enough, I saw those middle school friends again at after parties from THEIR high school reunion! Fun was had by all, and it was a blast catching up with old friends and their spouses.

Manual transmissions for the win! I used to have Miatas (1991, 2001, and a 2004) and a 2014 Fiesta ST as all manuals. SO. FUN. Since January when I stopped working, we sold the ST and I only had automatics (boo). Now with this Mustang that has the manual trans and FOUR times the power, I have to be really careful of my speed. This car can really get going in a way I'm not used to!

It's never easy (we've had to say goodbye to two horses, two other dogs, and two cats before Watson), but I love that I could see them to end of their days. Best wishes @Ally! 💞

There was nothing to watch, so I grabbed for Shut up: flower boy band! It was so so soooo goooood ;-) I'm loving this the most from the flower series. Lee Min ki is like a great peppermint candy - so refreshing or like my favourite cinnamon chewing gum which is hard to get so chewing it makes you feel like beeing in paradise.

I did the same thing!
The only currently airing thing I've picked up since BTIOFL ended is Jugglers, and it's filling my cute, brainless fluff quota. I've also been slowly getting through Forest of Secrets, but since it's so dark and requires some brainpower to keep all the threads straight I can only handle a few episodes a week.
So yesterday I decided to give SUFBB a second chance (my first try about six months ago lasted half-way through the first episode, but at the time I decided I wasn't feeling the school/teenage vibe), and now it seems to be ticking all the right boxes.

Just between lovers started strong. Like @WishfulToki mentioned it feels like a movie. For now it has a little indie vibe which is so needed in this drama uniform market.
It looks like some dramas are like books - one day you are like bitting in to the concrete and some other day you treat yourself to the most exclusive chocolate or delicious fruit.

isa and the time I was held hostage (almost/practically)
Good morning and happy Friday/OT to you, Beanies!
So, to catch you all up on my off wall adventures (because I know you’re all on tenterhooks waiting). Here we go.
On Monday, Dec 4 I turned the keys in to my CO apartment. :*( It really was sad to say goodbye to this adventure. I had worked and saved and tried SO HARD for it to end the way it did. But, lessons were learned (hopefully they stuck so I wont be tempted to learn them again). The weird lady that I had been successfully (somewhat) ghosting called me on Monday afternoon to see if I really was moving. I was like HECK YES, DUDE! Peace out, chuck the deuces, all the things.
Can’t nobody hold me down (oh no) I got to keep on movin’. And such.
Back when I first met the weird lady and she was just a potential new friend as opposed to a borderline stalker she asked if I would deliver some blankets and socks to the local charity and I said sure. But the contact never came through so here I am trying to shove all of my accumulated crap into my tiny car and I have this huge garbage bag of blankets. I tell her that she needs to have someone come pick this up before 5 when I have to turn in the keys or its getting thrown away. She keeps insisting that I just bring it to her (her car had broken down over the weekend). I tell her no, A. I’m busy. B. There’s no room in my car. She offers to come over and help me pack. And as much as I’d really rather not see her--I hate cleaning. So, I tell her come on over. She tells me that I have to come pick her up. I have been packing up my car since 1AM. It is now almost 12. I’ve already told her more than once that I don’t have room in my car. She spends the next 2 hours texting me every 15/20 mins to come pick her up. At 2--surprise, surprise. She didn’t need me to come pick her up as she’s now in my living room. Here to help cleaning. She looks around and says its a good thing that she’s here because there’s no way I’d finish on time.
And then spends the next 2 hours on her phone cleaning an already clean sink while chatting on the phone with her co-worker. However, some things just make me work faster. At 4 when she got off the phone she declares that there’s no way all of this stuff is going to fit in my car but that she’s an expert at packing and we can take all of my stuff to her house and she’ll help me re-pack. I was of two minds. The first was: hell.NO. The second was: my stuff :(. I don’t want to leave so much of my stuff behind. So, I said well, why don’t you drive my car to your house--we have to be out in an hour and a half--unload the back and front seats and come back and we’ll get the rest of the stuff loaded and you’ll help me repack so that I don’t lose so much stuff and I’ll hit the road. She says that she has a better idea and starts calling everyone she knows at church with a van (this will be easier and faster!) to come and pick up the rest of my stuff...

and take it to her house. I turn in my keys so we’re sitting outside for the next 3 hours in 30 degree weather. At night. She wont even look at my car to start rearranging things (itll be easier at my house when we can take everything out!) By the time we make it to her house and get everything unloaded its 19 degrees out and after 10. Tuesday. She asks if I can take her to run some errands before we get started because her car died over the weekend. We’ll get started loading your car as soon as we get back, promise. We make it back to her house around 4 and we have dinner and she’s oh, I’m so tired I have to be at work at 4 in the morning so I’m going to go to bed. I’ll be back by 4 and I’ll help you pack up then, k? Do you mind if I drive your car? Since I slept at her house the night before and was apparently sleeping there again I felt like I had to say yes. When she comes back the next day she says that I’ll need to get gas before I go and then sits and says, give me three good reasons why you need to leave now. You can leave next week. Or the week after. You can spend a couple of weeks with me!
My answer. 1. I.Want.To. and 2. I don’t need any other fucking reasons.
So, she’s staring at me all hurt and says I’m not going to help you at all, then. And then leaves. I am so annoyed at this point. Its Wednesday. I have been at her house for 2 days and she keeps dodging the issue of helping me pack and keeps telling me that I should just stay. Other than the bare minimum I’m pretty sure I didn’t say a word to her on Tuesday or Wednesday because everything, everything I said lead to: stay! You shouldn’t take that job! Stay here with me! I won’t charge you rent! (when I first accepted the job she told me to not take it, to move in with her--rent free--and wait for a librarian job in CO to come along). And she kept singing Mariah Carey’s We Belong Together and that why are you so obsessed with me song and frankly it was freaking me the fuck out.
I was like...nope. Leaving. Tomorrow. At 12. Don’t fucking care about anything else. I will burn all of my shit if necessary. I.Am.LEAVING. So, on Thursday I go to start my car--and after running for maybe 2-3 minutes it dies. I text her and ask if there was any gas in the car because the gauge was below the E and typically after the engine warms up it bounces to where it really is--but it never bounced. It just made this weird sound and died. She texts back that there was gas in the car, but she has a book in her basement that can identify car problems by sound and she’ll look for it when she gets home and this weekend we’ll call her mechanic and next week he’ll fix my car. I told her that I had called some people from my church to come and help and she FREAKED OUT. She started texting me multiple times a minute: why? Why did you call them? You didn’t need to call them! Just wait for me! And variations on this fucking crazy theme. I answered once that if its not the...

its not the car just needs gas (I have NEVER had so low gas that the car wouldn’t even start. I honestly think she did something--ran it somewhere or drained the gas or something to make it so low) then they’ll take me to a mechanic and pay for it to get fixed and then I’ll still be able to get on the road today. She kept texting me that I didn’t need to call my church people. She has friends in the neighborhood and they’ll help me if she texts them. At this point: so not interested in anyone you consider a friend.
Her final text: I just love you so much [isa]. I really do. Youre the best friend I ever had. I hope you know how much I really love you.
My response: I’m driving.
So, to date: I’ve been kidnapped once and held hostage once (almost.practically).

I knew she was a wackadoo. I shouldn't have told her to come over. I have GOT to stop being so lazy. It was the offer of helping me clean that made my toss my concerns (of her being a freaking psycho) aside and say SURE! Come on over! And she didn't even clean! She cleaned the sink for 2 hours. That was already clean.
This is what I've learned: In the past I've always just...accepted friends. My friendships were always really passive. People come up to me and say "we're friends now!" and I'm all..."eh. What else am I doing. Come, lets be friends little weirdo" so since this is how I accept friends I can't be shocked when some of them prove to be...you know...nuts. I've got to be more proactive. Or at least vet them better. I know I attract the crazy people (like recognizes like and all) but...yeah. I've learned that can be dangerous. Better choices: thats my new years resolution for 2018. Better choices and think things through (ya moron).

Just completed watching Story of A Man aka The Slingshot. I love every minutes of it. The story keep escalate until the very end. Never a dull moment, unnecessary scenes, or useless character. At the end the protagonist still losing people that he care most. Usually I can't accept sad ending, but every moment in Story of A Man were beautifully done that it still felt satisfying. Of course, in the alternate universe that resides in my head, kimshin and eunso lived their life happily ever after 😢
Since I'm new to kdrama, I just found out that the leading man, Park Yong-ha had died few years ago. Why oh why, he's very good as kimshin... If he's still alive, he'd be 40 years old this year. He might have done sageuk or starred in another hit drama... RIP park yong ha-ssi, thank you for for making kimshin the most adorable male lead and underdog

I really liked PYH in Winter Sonata, I never got to complete the show but I always wondered where he is now (I didn't know his name by then). Recently after the death of KJH many people discussed him on DB and I searched his name and found out that he is the same person from WS. It is indeed heartbreaking knowing that people you have just seen or are still listening too don't exist in this world anymore.

Good morning! Been super busy at work so I've only had time to watch a couple episodes of Because This Is My First Life. I only have 2 episodes to go! Still excellent but I do have a question that I am a little confused on.
I don't understand Won-Seok reasons behind not getting married. It's one thing about just not believing in the institution of marriage but that doesn't seem to be the case here. He goes on about how he needs more time before they get married. Or need another 5 years. And how he isn't confident to get married and I am baffled why. He seems to want to get married to Rang but keeps putting it off and doing things he doesn't want to do. I am assuming it's a cultural thing like maybe before you get married you need to have a house or something?
Anyways, not much else going on in dramaland for me. I am looking forward to watching Black over the Christmas holiday now that it has hit Netflix but not much else airing right now that appeals to me. :(

Good that you're enjoying BTIOFL! As to Won Seok not wanting to get married, I took it as he wasn't ready for the responsibilities of a husband in Korean society, i.e.: breadwinner for the family, which includes getting a house. He wanted to keep pursuing his app dream. Ho Rang's dream was to be a housewife and quit her job. Overall I think the writer is criticizing Korean traditional gender roles in this drama, which kind of came off as too strong and bothered me in the end.

I know how you feel, it baffled me to no end before I decided that marriage in Korea equals having kids and he was not ready to have kids.

December 16, 2017 at 3:59 AM
Yeah you could say that because in Korea when an unmarried couple are expecting a child, they need to get married as soon as possible. I think it's considered a social taboo to have kids outside of marriage. On top of that, while kids are registered under their parents' name in the general sense, they are actually considered being part of their parternal family. So I was thinking if the drama elaborated more on starting without sticking to traditional conventions.

My 2 bits: don't watch the last 2 episodes. They ruin the show.
I think Won-seok sees being married as being a grown-up. Which he is not really ready to do. He wants to have the freedom to develop his app and code with his friends. He and Ho-rang have been living together in this little bitty rooftop room. That she paid for. Which is fine when you are young and daring, but to be married, he has to provide a house that her parents will approve of. That has room for that pink couch. He knows that to Ho-rang, being married means getting to quit her waitress job to be a full time homemaker. That being married means babies. In order to be married, he has to hold down a full time job and be able to support a wife and kids. And he is just not ready for that.

You mean Ho Rang and Won Seuk, or Ji Ho and Se Hee?
If you mean the main couple, that means you think the drama lost its direction after episode 6! *SPOILER* My unpopular opinion is that it started to happen after the seaside kiss, so episode 12. The writer fixated on the idea that 'a kiss is not happy ever after', and created additional angst and changed the characters to convince us of that, most of all Ji Ho (who ended up seeming manipulative, seeking to please his parents and then divorcing him for it).

Which is a shame since A Kiss Is Not Happy Ever After is a great theme to explore. If they had done it right. Or what does Happy Ever After mean? Ahhh, what might have been.
My random theory is that Ji-ho, while not buying the kiss=HEA, did buy the Separation=HEA that dramas keep trying to sell us. So she randomly decided to manufacture a separation into her relationship.

Anyone watching Nothing to Lose aka Judge v Judge? I am really enjoying it, although I admit the slapstick in the first eps was a bit hard to get through. BUT, I love the slow fall of Yeon Woo Jin. It's not because she is a) acting cute b) acting stupid or c) chasing him. It's all about how capable, caring, and dedicated she is. Plus Dong Ha all teary and conflicted (and not a serial killer!). What is not to love?
Admittedly the justice system stuff makes no sense from an American perspective but when I gloss over that (my 15 years as a paralegal are so hard to stuff down, tho) it is absorbing. The plotting, the manipulation behind the scenes, the cute obliviousness of the leads to each other's attraction, and did I mention Dong Ha's quivering lips and puppy dog eyes?

In my Kdrama life: "A" and I had a study date yesterday until late into the night. During the study date he kept apologizing for being late then he bought me snacks ☺️☺️
In school related news, I got my first ever internship at a company in NYC. I cried when I found out. As a woman of color majoring in computer science, most people in my life aren't supportive of my endeavors. Being able to do this on my own and being successful honestly means the world to me. In addition to that, I found out that next semester I'll be able to teach the same group of students ☺️. I've slowly started to understand why teachers love their jobs so much. It's so beautiful watching a student's face light up when they finally understand. This experience honestly warms my heart.

I saw the funniest line of the year in any K-drama just this week. I mean, it was the moment and the delivery and the unexpected subtitle all at once. I laughed, I rewound, I made sure I read what I thought and I laughed some more.
Spoiler space.
It was in this week's episode of I'm not a Robot, when he's talking to her and she asks him if he still likes his childhood sweetheart and he says, basically, he guesses so. And her response, muttered under her breath: "Well, shit."

This reminds me, I now need to go read the "What We're Watching" post!

Super happy with Just Between Lovers so far (and I am so ready for next week). Kim Jin-won's directing is beautiful, no other word for it. Plus Won Jin-ah has really surprised and impressed me, as has the extended cast (Yoon Yoo-seon and Ahn Nae-sang <333). I get a very mid-2000's Lee Kyung-hee melodrama vibe from this show, and all the misery and cheese feels very refreshing in today's climate of blandness and ~introspection.
Also finished Girls' Generation 1979. In spite of my reservations, I really, really enjoyed it! It kind of reminds me of shows like Kyungsung Scandal and Tamra, in that it was somehow much greater than the sum of its parts, if you actually sit down and do the math lol. The writer's scripts were a mess and her priorities were totally screwed up (I think I'll remember not so much all the show's missed chances, but its complete lack of interest in taking them), and the less said about the acting the better, but I could go on about how magical the directing was forever. And that soundtrack!! Even when I was praying for Jung-hee's Son Jin oppa to fall of the face of the earth, I just could not get mad at this show. Hong Seok-goo has my eternal respect.

Agree at girls generation impression. I just couldn't care less with the love line. Then I watched this drama for Yeo Hoi Yeon aka Son Jin because his performances in dancing waltz alone is really good, only to not liking his story here. Should i continue because i really love the cinematography.

hmm, idk. Jung-hee's crush continues to eat up way too much screentime till the last episode, and mostly it's the same material over and over again. Are you invested in any other parts of the show? I stuck around for the girls' friendship, Hae-joo, and Jung-hee's family situation, and although I think those storylines deserved a lot more focus, there are some wonderful scenes that made it worth it for me. I also enjoyed the soundtrack enough that I was able to zone out during most of the oppa~ stuff, but I guess ymmv haha.

Now you are going to make me watch "Between Lovers" I just love the underrated Kang Han-na and I hope she is not wasted in it.
I haven't seen Ahn Nae-sang since rebel so this sounds like a treat!
"Girls' Generation hit the spot and I went into it with low expectation. New actors etc.
Funny you mentioned "Tamra" because I rewatched it a couple months ago just for the heck of it. The kind of mess that I can come to lol.

Tamra is awesome!! I still listen to its theme song all the time. The same way I can't explain why that drama hit me so hard, I can't explain why I had so much fun with Girls' Generation lol. And yet I did! They're both such likeable shows. I've been searching for the OST on YouTube, but I can't find any extensive playlists >:(
Kim Jin-won's directing is sooo good in Just Between Lovers. Kang Han-na doesn't appear until the second episode, but it looks like her character is going to be very smart and put together, if nothing else. I know I said it reminds me of Lee Kyung-hee, and it does, but if her character goes nuts like Lee Kyung-hee's second leads always do, I will be so annoyed haha. (And hopefully the writing doesn't go crazy, either! I'm always a little scared to watch melos while they're airing.)

Thanks for letting Beanies know about those music links, @kiara!
@juniper, starting in about August 2017, I posted links to a lot of my favorite music from my radio days (1974-1986) -- including lots of bands from the New York-New Jersey folk, rock, blues, punk, country rock, and New Wave scenes. Even some disco. (Keep in mind the R'n'R backlash against dico that prevailed in some areas, as evidenced by "Disco Sucks" t-shirts.) And Hawaiian slack key from that era, too. Much of it would have fit in as background music in LINGERIE GIRLS' GENERATION. Interestingly, a lot of the background music in the show was actually from the '50s and '60s, not 1979.
Be sure to check out The Nylons from Toronto, Canada. They did fantastic a cappella renditions of '60s classics and magnificent originals. I heard them at The Bottom Line in about 1984. They blew the doors off of many of the boy bands. ;-)

So glad to meet a fellow Beanie music fan. ;-)
I volunteered on FM college stations. One of them was a bastion of free-form radio -- and a wonderful opportunity to educate myself about the entire spectrum of music, from Beethoven to the B-52s by way of Benny Goodman, Spike Jones, B. B. King and everything in-between -- and international pop and folk music. Plus recordings that defied classification, experimental music, recordings made by ethnologists, and in-studio performances by local bands, even a live radio play. I once had a harpsichordist perform baroque pieces live.
As long as we didn't transgress the Federal Communications Commission's ban on bad language, we could air just about anything, although disco was greatly reviled, and playing it risked invoking the wrath of the majority of the jocks, who were more attuned to rock, punk, New Wave, and various flavors of jazz and blues. For an idea of the censorship issue, check out George Carlin's “The Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television” from his 1972 LP Class Clown. When I first started out there, I was on the air after a wild and crazy guy whose theme song may have been "Boogie 'Til You Puke" by Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes. He was a hard act to follow. ;-)
I never expected to get a paying job in radio, but ended up moonlighting on weekends at an AM station in Honolulu that aired locally-produced ethnic and religious programming. It was the closest thing to free-form at a commercial station I could ever have found, and probably the only commercial station I could have ever stood working at. During my shifts I got to hear Filipino (mainly Tagalog and Ilocano) and Okinawan programming, plus Samoan sermons, hymns and pop music, and also Korean programming. (That's where I first heard “Arirang” decades before I'd even heard of Kdrama.)
The gig mainly involved airing prerecorded syndicated and local shows, plus a weekly remote live church service, and riding herd on the transmitter. There was half an hour of airtime to be filled after one of the religious shows, and I slipped in as much black gospel as I could get my hands on. At the end of my shift, I would bop all the way on my mile-plus walk home. ;-)
Anyway, enjoy excavating my pseudo free-form music entries. I prefer to use text links instead of video links so I can document artist, title, album, year, etc.

This is a gold mine of info on a thread. I'm so glad db is sending daily emails! @pakalanapikake, wow. Just wow on your musical diversity! I grew up half in the Middle East and half in the US. I became accustomed to listening to music whose lyrics were in another language I didn't understand. Now I find those kind of music interesting, but I still have a lot more to hear. Still stuck on K-pop for now, ha. TVXQ's "Mirotic" is stuck in my head atm....

Glad you're enjoying the music. I'm tickled to bits when I find obscure pieces I haven't heard in 30 years on YouTube.
Hey, I've got a Middle Eastern connection of my own: I used to take belly dancing lessons, and loved the trance-inducing quality of the music. ;-)
I still regret never having made the time to study hula when I lived in Hawai'i. Auwe!
My taste in music was irreparably warped at a tender age by exposure to Dad's collection of 78RPM records, which included Spike Jones. (His version of "The Blue Danube" is totally bonkers. I've posted it on my fan wall.) After that, it was all downhill. ;-)

Open Thread Week 45! Honestly, I haven’t had time to even breathe today, but couldn’t just skip an open thread!
First, “Forest of Secrets.” I know I’m really late to the party, but I’m not as invested in this one as was with, say “Lookout” or “Circle,” which aired the same time earlier this year. Maybe it’s because I’m not discussing it with anyone, so also feel a disconnect to the community. Maybe it’s because I’ve been watching live dramas (the past 5-6 of them were all live) that watching something old isn’t as appealing as it once was. Maybe I’m just too busy to be watching anything right now, so it’s a chore to sit down and watch t.v. Or maybe it’s the season, and watching murderers and prostitutes is dampening my holiday spirit. Anyway, I’m starting episode 7 and I’m not really caring who the “culprit” is anymore. Oh, well…I might have to put this one on hold for the New Year.
Next, so many funny real life moments this week, so I’ll just post a few short snippets:
Hubby just watched the new Star Wars movie last evening:
RING RING RING
Me: Hello!
Hubby: It’s so good, you’ll never guess the ending!
Me: Really? That good?
Hubby: Just like a kdrama. It has humor, drama, makes you cry, laugh, and everything in between.
Me: Plot holes too?
Hubby: No, except for that, so not really like a kdrama.
Me: LOLOLOLOLOL!
Sister in law just got my “Just call me Oppa” nephew’s first hair cut and Facetimed me:
Me: I’m sad, no more curls or man-buns for him! But he looks just like a kdrama actor now with those long bangs swept across his forehead.
Daughter: Like that actor on Strong Girl Bong-Soon!
Me: Park Hyung Sik! That brown hair! Hey, we haven’t seen that yet! How do you know?
Daughter: I was looking through Netflix. He’s on the picture.
Me: *To sister in law*. I’ll text you Park Hyung Sik’s picture from that show and you can watch it on Netflix tonight! Your kid is a regular oppa look-alike!
Sister in law: *To her 2 year old son* Can you say “Oppa” and wink for your aunt?
Nephew: OP-PAAA! *with his signature double wink* 😉
Me: *MELTINGGGGGG* OMG, HE’S SOOOOOO CUTE. You’re going to slay all the girls!
Last one: While getting ready for bed, I’ve made a habit of listening to Spotify.
As Roy Kim’s Heaven is playing, hubby walks past the bathroom…
Hubby: I’m surprised you haven’t slit your wrists yet.
Me: 😂 😂 😂 😂
Moral of the Story: Sometimes you don’t need a kdrama to be entertained like you’ve watched one.
2nd Moral: My ovaries are sore.
3rd Moral: Holiday Cheer to everyone!

Well, lastnight was NOT a cute nite otherwise—was chasing my son up and down the stairs and sitting on top of him when I finally caught him so I could have a “come to Jesus” talk with him about obedience and respect—while hubby was at the movies. It might have looked cuter/funnier in a kdrama.

Cute? No. But, laying down the law so that he can grow up and be a good person? Caring enough about your son that you care whether or not he's respectful? Yep. Still going with cute, man. There are SO MANY kids in the libraries that I have worked in over the years that desperately need and want someone to chase them up and down the stairs and have a come to jesus with them but their parents cannot be bothered to care.

LOL. One of those kids in that library is probably my son! My kids are voracious readers. I LOVE OUR LIBRARY; the librarians know him by name. He knows more about world history than I do--he just read about the history of Vietnam--like a 500 page account from the emperors through the Vietnam War. Crazy how much that boy reads. TV he couldn't care less about. Kdramas are a snoozefest for him. Which is why he's never in these conversations--I say one word and he's out of there!
isa: I'm not a serial killer I'm just really passionate about things
December 19, 2017 at 1:12 PM
That is AWESOME. Boys get such a bad rep as not wanting to read/liking to read. Thats not it at all. They aren't being allowed to chose what they want to read and people are shoving stupid Judy Moody and Stink at them when really--they want what they want (just like we do--its funny how kids are whole, full people).

Halfway done with "Wild Romance." I had my gripes with the directing and some of the acting, but it has settled down for the most part thus allowing the script to shine. Even if the directing is trying to work against the drama, Park Yeon Seon's writing is still witty and clever and is great at creating nuanced characters. Still, the drama gets bogged down with its unsubtle directing and I do wish Lee Shi Young wouldn't force her character's quirkiness so much by being over-the-top and just be natural with it, no doubt partially the fault of the director. It's still a good drama so far due to the script.
I also checked out "Black Knight" for Kim Rae Won and Seo Ji Hye, but I'm not sure what to think of it. For the writer, the only work I've seen of hers was her segment in the old 2005 omnibus drama, "Beating Heart" and IMO; hers was easily the worst of the six segments. Here however, she seems to be doing an okay job in creating a sense of mystery between the two immortal women and the back stories of the characters. The script has some things going for it. The main issue I have with this drama is the directing and editing, which leaves a lot to be desired. It seems the director can't seem to keep a shot longer than 5 seconds without to cutting to the next scene. He also has an issue with sticking to a tone for the drama either by playing a scene for comedy and then switching to melodrama or by directing a rather serious scene for laughs. In terms of acting, Kim Rae Won doesn't have much to do on the acting front yet other than be charming and mysterious while Seo Ji Hye's character is the most interesting at this point. On a shallow note, Seo Ji Hye is a very beautiful woman. Still, even with its glaring flaws, my curiosity is piqued as to where the story will go and I'm not writing it off just yet. Whether it explains everything as more episodes air or if it all falls apart and gets lost in the mountains.

Wild Romance is so frustrating, yet so rewarding haha. I agree with you about the director being to blame for Lee Si-young's over-the-topness. I kind of blamed him for Jessica's "performance," too, because even if she can't act, she was a total newbie and I'm pretty sure he wasn't giving her good advice, if any advice at all. Still, I'm glad you like the writing and the characters! Park Moo-yeol in WR is probably my favorite of all Park Yeon-seon's Park Moo-yeols, including the one in Evasive Inquiry Agency XP
Seo Ji-hye is so beautiful! I have had a girl crush on her ever since I saw her in Shin Don.

Here's a question for all you beanies. Why does the Rubik's cube appear so often in k-dramas? Has anyone else noticed this or is it only me? I asked this question on Quora and basically got told I was stupid for suggesting it. I wondered if you drama officionados would have a different take. In the last couple days, I've watched episodes of Because This Is My First Life (last two episodes), Reply 1994, the first few episodes of Circle, the most recent episodes of Two Cops, and I think I've seen the cube in all those dramas, though not sure about Two Cops. It just struck me how often one is included.

Non drama related but I'm devasted and this is the only community I'm part of that might understand. Just opened my mail to find alerts telling me that Jonghyun of SHINee died. Apparently he committed suicide. I love SHINee. No really, I'm a 50 yr old women whose favorite band is 5 twenty year old Korean men. He was so talented, beyond his amazing voice, he wrote songs for himself, for his group, for many other artists. He had written two books. He had a thriving solo career. Millions of fans loved him, I know his members loved him. I'm so, so heartbroken that he was in enough pain and distress that he felt this was the only way he could deal with it.

There's honestly no way to respond to something like this.
I feel almost betrayed by the K-ent industry. "I spend so much time on you, but is this the reality? If so, I should just work harder at focusing on my own life."
Putting aside my jumbled emotions, I just wanted to say that suicide, no matter when, where, how and whom, will always invite nothing but more pain and hurt.
I'm sincerely sorry today to read this news of a South Korean artist who could no longer see anything but pain and only one way out.

it is not that I like how you feel, you know.... but just to say, I think I would go half mad and perhaps turn psycho if something happened to any musician I liked. but you need to keep it together. let the pain out howver you can. if it piles up it blocks your view and turns the world into a dark place. keep throwing the heartbreak away but preserve a tiny bit of it to lock in a treasure box.

Guys there's a petition going around in Jonghyun's name for Korean entertainment agencies to create programs to monitor and support their employees (whether staff, actors, idols, etc) mental health and to spread awareness. I was feeling so helpless and so full of grief when I found out about Jonghyun, I felt like a movement like this is what little I could do to help. To do something.

He helped others many times; he was always open about his struggles, and used his radio programme and his songs to reach out to others in his own situation. He sought help too, but apparently his doctor blamed his personality. He left a letter with a friend where he writes about his suffering and how unhelpful his therapy was. Of course now it is all a big what if...

My husband has treated many a suicidal patient, who have had varying degrees of improvement. There's a security officer in my neighborhood now who was treated by my husband who does well only if on his medications and we see him every week. He loves and appreciates my husband, always telling him how he saved his life. I wished there were more doctors like him, honestly and it makes me so angry when I hear stories like this. That's the caveat, if you seek help and don't find it, don't lose hope, there is always someone else who can and will help you.
