SBS courts Jang Geun-seok to be their Operation King

Jang Geun-seok (Jackpot) has had limited activities in Korea in the last few years after his tax evasion scandal, mostly working in Japan where he’s very popular as a Hallyu singer. He did come back to dramaland for last year’s Jackpot, which didn’t hit the jackpot, but now he’s considering an offer from SBS for the lead role in their upcoming drama Operation King.

Operation King is about a scam artist who impersonates a prosecutor. The main character was smart enough to successfully pass the board exams, but due to various circumstances, he had to give up his dreams of becoming a law official. He’s “a fraud who is more like a prosecutor than a real one.” Oooh, this sounds like a Korean version of Suits (but it’s not because a separate remake of that is on the way). Because he’s not legally bound or employed by the government, he’s not tied down by the bureaucratic red tape. So he can investigate whomever he wants to, even if they are powerful politicians who have influence over the prosecution department, and in whatever fashion he wants to.

This drama seems to be combining lots of popular tropes from 2016 and 2017, like a con artist as its main character AND a prosecutor too (Lee Min-ho was similarly a con man posing as a prosecutor at times in Legend of the Blue Sea), and using underhanded methods to catch even worse criminals (Mad Dog, Lookout, Police Unit 38, Bad Guys: City of Evil).

This tough role will definitely be a change from Jang Geun-seok’s pretty flower boy image. I like that he’s branching out and trying new things, but SBS was also the network that produced Jackpot, so there’s that. The PD behind Operation King will be Nam Tae-jin, who produced a 5-episode drama called Part-Time Idol that began streaming on Netflix last November. He’s a relative newbie to the business, and this will be his first time directing a miniseries.

Official scheduling with regard to Operation King has not been released, but since they’re casting now, I’m expecting it sometime early next year.

I love this guy, he's my first love in dramaland.😉😉
However, dude, I can't see an article about him breathing without everyone asking when will that '87 born guy enlist, so now even I am curious about it.. 😱😱😱😱

Hahaha. But serously, I wish he would enlist now. Jackpot's plot seemed sort of blah, but I think JGS' acting was good there. And he just finished filming a Kim Ki Duk film. So it seems like a good high point to leave and maybe come back with a cable drama.

I really like Jang Geun Seok. And with the tax scandal already, I hope he doesn't end up having an enlistment-related scandal.

I also thought he's enlisting, so this is a surprise. But, I do want him to have a solid, good drama bcos I have a soft spot for him.

Don’t think Jang Geun Seok has had a decent drama since You’re Beautiful. So I can only hope that this will be better than his last few dramas. I actually wanted the h in his drama Pretty Man to end up with the second male lead - that’s how bad his role was in that drama.

I never felt "you're beautiful" to be a good drama, but his acting there was very good. I feel, he is actually a pretty good actor that convey lots of feelings. If only he were given more normal roles!!!

Thank you for adding 'more normal roles'. He was such a ridiculous diva in YAB that I burst out laughing at my first watch. Took me rewatching it before I took him serious.

Ha ha... i was too new in the drama world back there to even have been able to form myself a balanced opinion, but in general, it did not affect me whatsoever, although he had a pretty soapy story to tell, with horrible mother who abandoned him and all.
Pretty man, just the same.
Now that I come to think of it: I only liked him in a movie about a baby.
I am trying to watch Love Rain now, simply because a friend of mine is his big fan and she asked me to watch it. Oh my... It takes me foreeeeeever 😑. His first character is soo lacking personality! So far the story infuriates me.
That is why I say: he would be good if at least he would be given a normal and decent character!!!

Unfortunately, I was coming from the ridiculous, addictive high that was BOF and probably just started Coffe Prince so
YAB didn't really stand a chance.
Hmmmn Love Rain. I'm interested because of Seo In Gook, though I heard his not in it much and Soiyo

Love Rain is the worst piece of drivel I have ever seen. That said, he was quite good as the son (the dad was just...yuck). That drama is a hot mess, though.

The only question is isnt he suppose to go to military already? He is 87 er

Maybe he will add military evasion on top of his tax evasion scandal?

Can we not make assumptions, please? I read that the tax evasion part was more like a misunderstanding which happened due to his agency, also after he got to know about it, he cleared that up. So I feel like it's unfair to criticize him unknowingly :). Being an 87'er I guess he will go to army next year, since this year is almost ending? I do want him to go to army and lose some of those baby fats so we get to see him on more practical dramas lol.

SBS and this station's eternal love for legal theme dramas. Sigh.
I have not liked Jang Geun Seok in anything since YAB. No offense to his fans but it was sad that he wasted away his prime years being stucked in that YAB image and doing dramas with roles more or less the shadow of Hwang Tae Kyung. Glad that he's slowly paving his way back by taking on more serious and challenging roles. By the way, just curious why is he not enlisting yet?

Yeah. Koreans have been calling him the ’icon of failure’ because of that. He kept choosing teen idol dramas too often and he seemed to have aimed to that hallyu popularity but he’s neither doing domestically well nor is he the current it-hallyu-boy. If he succeeds in turning his image around, I’ll be happy but dude hasn’t had any decent performance after Hwang Tae kyung (and that’s pretty sad because YAB was a teen drama..), until Royal Gambler.

I shouldn't have laughed but I totally LOL'D at 'Icon of failure' Chai, that's savage!! But truly when I read the headline, the first thing that came to mind was, "oh, its that Bad Drama oppa" all his projects seem to have poor reviews.

I would've said something about his enlistment but I honestly love him so much that I'm just going to be happy he's thinking of acting again. I didn't exactly watch Daebak. Something about that drama didn't sound like it would be good and the female lead honestly drove me crazy.

I hope he's paired with someone awesome because if he even tries a bit, he's still amongst the most talented actor of his generation. I hope he's back!

The first thing that came to my mind was also isn’t he due for enlistment soon? Haha but nonetheless if he can wrap this up before that then it will be good.

This production has a recipe to fail. And a drama about another prosecutor (real or fake) and taking down corrupted mini systems (you can never take down the big one, not even if you are Chef Kim), it is not attractive for me.
I don't feel drawn to watch this. But I feel some kind of empathy toward JGS... I hope he gets to hit the jackpot with a true real good drama, or at least a decent and understandable character.

This is serendipitous. My mother was watching Beethoven Virus and I happened to stop by and see a familiar face on the screen. I can't say no to classical music + Jang Geun Suk. So, here I go... I hope it's good.

Yay! I really like Jang Geun-seok. The first time I took notice of him was ages ago, in The Case of Itaewon Homicide. He was so good playing both the harmless mask the character wore and the stone-cold killer beneath - and the transition between them - that I was incredibly impressed. I also really liked him in Hong-Gil Dong, Beethoven Virus and You're Beautiful... but things went rather downhill after that. ;-)

Unfortunately, this guy has long had a habit of picking REALLY BAD ROLES that offer absolutely no opportunity for the great acting he is demonstrably capable of, and that are just painful to watch in general. I hope he is now over his obsession with being a pretty flower boy!

I think this premise sounds potentially interesting, if not super-original. It really depends on what is done with it. But right now, I am just happy the role sounds like it might give Jang Geun-seok a chance to stretch his acting chops again.

Here's hoping it's a good drama! I would love to see more of him again... just not as a flower boy, or a weird martyr-figure who eats live snakes. Not asking that much, is it? ;-)

I love his noona crush on Ha Ji-won in "Hwang Jini." He was convincing as a Joseon young master and he looked great in sageuk garb.
Despite the script going to that h... place in "Jackpot." Jang did his best from beginning to end. If he decides to pick up a sageuk again I'll be there to watch him.

Irl I love his personality and cooking skills :).

Jang Geun-seok is a favorite of mine but sometimes it's a matter of choosing good scripts and he ( or his agency) hasn't always been on top of that game. I hope the scam-artist prosecutor role is a good fit, I'm up for it. Task Force 38, Bad Guys, and Legend of the Blue Sea were fun kdramas with similar themes. I'm definitely up for it! (Please, no buried up to his neck in mud scenes!)

You think you are funny?
What JKS has to do with the mistake made by his company, which was cleared BEFORE he took the role in "Jackpot" and was MC-ing "Produce 101"?
An artist is not doing his taxes by himself

I see many people didn't like him in "You're beautiful", but this role was the rocket who made him a Hallyu star and definitely changed his life.
You may talk all you want about his pretty boy image and acting choices, but also you should admit he has his own path to success.
He was the first foreign singer which debut was straight at number 1 on the Oricon chart in Japan and his music career keeps strong.
The dramas he filmed were exported in many country and "Love rain" is still the drama sold at the highest price - 360 000$ for an episode. Any big hit drama claiming for this title - check the numbers first!
In the last years Jang Keun Suk also shot a few short movies as a director and they were shown on festivals.
He played the main role in the last film of Kim Ki Duk which soon will premiere.
And about the army - he will go, after finishing his Ph.D. as a film director.

Shame that JGS always have bad luck in his dramas because he can act well. While YAB isn't his best work, it was one of his most popular ones. Jackpot's premise was kind of OK but the plot went haywire with the number of times his character supposedly got lucky. lmao. It became a running joke whether he would be alive or not. I really hope this one would be a great one should he choose to accept it.

I am SO glad that he let go of the guyliner because come on, that look is soooo over. While he looked sexy af with the brooding guyliner look in YAB, maintaining it since then is just...idk....boring.

I am kind of afraid that since the drama has too many things that it wants to happen, the plot will be convoluted and once again, his character will be swallowed up by poorly written script.

Fingers crossed that this will be a good one!

Isn't he and 87'er? Did he already complete his enlistment early or did he get exempted? All the 87'ers and early 88'ers have gone and it seems he's the only one left. Not sure this is a good idea to keep delaying enlistment. An enlistment scandal is the worst thing for anyone's career.
