[Vlog] Our least favorite dramas of 2017

In our last couple videos, we talked about our favorite dramas of the year (here’s Part 1 and Part 2). Now it’s time to talk about our least favorite dramas… with a little help from our friend, somaek (aka beer + soju).

We’re not saying every drama we talk about is objectively The Worst (although I’d argue a few of them are), but they do all fall on our list of least enjoyable and/or least enjoyed, whether it’s because it skidded out of control, or the whole thing was a mess form the start, or it tanked spectacularly at the end.

A few of the titles mentioned: Bride of the Water God, Criminal Minds, Introverted Boss, Manhole, and Ruler, among others.

Grab a drink, let us know if you agree, and tell us what you’d add to the list!

As always, you can check out the Dramabeans Youtube channel directly, where you can subscribe for updates.

I love how you talk about Criminal Minds: "he at least gets to run and do fight scenes cause he is Lee Joon Gi." hahaha. I finished CM out of duty for Teacher but I felt pretty much the same as you plus the editing was not that of a crime drama, it was sort of like a youth or school drama editing. Safe. Not edgy. Oh well... as long as he can run and fight so he doesn´t lose his skills. I am willing to wait for a really good drama.

I love Lee Jun Ki so much but CM is a snooze-fest and the fact that got me pulling my hair is they wasted my dream pairing that is LJK with Moon Chae Won 😡. Year after year, I prayed for the same thing that LJK finally get to do a really good drama or that I am willing to miss him in dramaland if he could possibly return to Chungmuro again. I hope that wish finally materialize in year 2018. It's long overdue. Please be kind to LJK this coming year, Dear Drama Gods 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻.

For the first time ever in my entire fangirling life for Oppa, since My Girl, I had dropped his drama and never looked back at CM...and to think I looked forward to it cause a.) he is not in a Sageuk b.)it's with Moon Chae-won. But I only survived until about ep 6

LOL! I couldn't sit through Criminal minds even for LJG. Revolutionary love was the worst show this year with Manhole. BOTWG was not as bad but hella boring.
I had the same complaint as you about Ruler, they had YSH-KSH as leads with their amazing chemistry(the sole reason why Korea was abuzz about the project since 2016) and they were barely together. The second leads were bad but atleast L improved a little. So Hee was just god awful terrible. Not to mention her character who was hailed for her "love" was the whole reason why tragedy struck literally every character in the show. (She forced the Chief to punish Lee Sun's dad and got the ball rolling) Her obsession with Seja was really destructive.

LOL. I dropped Ruler, Hospital Ship (Boy, that took me a while to sink this sHip. It was so weird yet I lasted more than 4 episodes. Dunno.), Introverted Boss, RevLove, . I was considering giving them a second look but now naaaah. Hahahahaha. Or maybe I'll watch them again with somaek.

Hospital Ship - wth was Ha Ji Won thinking?? dropped it by episode 10. No chemistry between the leads at all

Revolutionary Love - not my favorite and suffered through to finish the damn thing. Choi Si Won character was really an idiot man child. Good OST despite the lack of story development

Bride of the Water God - only made it through 1 episode.. The actors look so uncomfortable on that show as if they were all sitting in a dental chair

Temperature of Love - started good then went downhill fast. dropped it by episode 8

Your list is the same as me, but i am mostly pissed about BOTWG because they ruined what could've been a great adaptation first because of turning it to a modern drama and second is the terrible choice of actors, except Im Ju Hwan. I couldn't last more than 2 episodes, they turned it to a silly show.

Ruler had terrible second leads and crappy writer who even won an award for best screenplay, and bad actress as YSH won Best New actress award, it's a joke!!

Seven Day Queen had a fantastic writer who sadly won't win anything, because the ratings sucked. their awards are not fair it's just based on ratings and popularity not quality.

somewhat true but not entirely. There are awards that are evaluated by professionals that are not simply "subjective". For example, screenplay, cinematography, sound production.

I think understanding the award criteria is the key. Most are upfront "popular" awards with votes, ratings as criteria and that is OK.

What I dislike are the "technical merit" awards or awards shows that are made out to be merit awards but use popularity as the main criteria.

I don't have an example for dramas but this year's MAMA award for best girl group dance was so disputed that even fans of the announced winners came out and said "they shouldn't have won this award". [names withheld to avoid flame wars]

:) ya things work that way.. but its really more telling of the mood a particular set of human group (audience) is in when.. and the fit it finds in which artsy product..

like even moving from having a boyfriend (women of no morals) to rampant love marriages (with full support on love marriages.. and no more the taboo)

Or how being a chef is now supercool vs "You want to learn cooking!"

i guess respect for a thing comes from who the audience is.. and its value.. and popularity and technicality are two different things

Honestly, I think Ruler read cheated on the ratings.... desperate for popularity and awards....... Knowing it was with Seven day queen on the same time slot and yet 7dq is on the bottom... I enjoyed watching it, especially the powerful impact of their acting and the message of the drama... and how the writer put a twist on a supposedly simple plot yet it ended on a very beautiful meaning........ Sadly, local viewers had a very different huge taste from fans abroad... Overall, technicality production wise for 7dq is PERFECT!!... and yeah, boooh to Ruler (thumbs down)...

I was really excited for Manhole because I'm such a big fan of Jae... but what went wrong with it? I can't even finish the first episode. I'm so sad, Jae. I hope you'll pick better projects next time.

As for BOTWG, the manhwa was one of my favourites because of the angst, the gorgeous illustration of the other world.... believe me I was one of the most excited person within my KDrama peers when news came out that it'll be getting a live action! HOWEVER, the drama happened. Can't get past episode 2. Apologies to SSK fans, she ruined it for me... or was it the modern setting? Or the wrong habaek too? I don't know. Wish it could have done better.

RevLuv... I read the recaps and decided I should just watch other dramas instead.

I basically agree with everything except TWY, i think d couple had amazing chemistry, d use of d magical subway may hv been pointless but i think d story was about how their love started with a questionable marriage and eneed with dem loving each oda. I agree though the time travel premise was used poorly.

I watched and dropped all the dramas you mentioned. And I totally agree about siwon character too. I just.dont.understand.siwon. He is beyond sheltered you know, like you said, as if he was losing a marble or two. He has no sense and logic at all, it was bizzare. Ruler failed me because they cast YSH and KSH and I had to spend more time on terrible second leads instead of seeing them together.

I actually will add Black solely on that dissapointing final minutes tbh. It was not an amazing drama, it was an ok drama, I cringe sometimes at their acting but it was beareable, there are too much sub plots and some of them just get drop somewhere but that ending though....come on! I rather they give me a middle finger and killed everyone than that. Or maybe that ending is actually a big f to me as viewer?

Am not saying that i simply watch them even to root for the cast… bride was…well... i didnt even last for a quarter of the first episode; i still want to watch it though if and when i have nothing else at hand.

I kept with it and focused on the workplace justice storyline. The romance was just stupid and I ignored it. Viki put up a clip the other day of Siwon helping himself to a shower at Park Seo Joon's apartment from She Was Pretty and it was 20x funnier than I remembered. So I can see how RL was such a big let down. Plus I may need to rewatch she was pretty, I forgot he had that sexy beard in it.

Siwon's character in SHE WAS PRETTY had a serious, sensitive, touching side that balanced out his pranksterish sense of humor. I'd loved his turn in HYANG DAN, too -- which I think was the first drama I'd seen him in. I'd been rooting for him to have a great comeback project, but REVOLUTIONARY LOVE was a disaster, and I had to quit watching it before permanent brain damage set in. I bailed after the first two weeks, I think. I quickly canned MANHOLE because it was too dopey, too.

Glad I skipped all these (after the 1st episode on BOTWG, 2nd episode of HS) but for different reasons. BOTWG had the annoying voice of her male nurse, and HS with all the over the dramatic top "medical" scenes. I can't watch a drama if people or the circumstances that they are placed in annoy me. Sorry, I have no qualms in dropping them. With that said--I need those wine/beer glasses! Will they be on the site? LOL.

Once again try the automatic subtitles for a good laugh. Alcohol might make them even better.

They had problems with English:
our year-end - "our urine"
right that ship = "write that shit"
drama = "trombone"
drama = "trauma"
crazyville = "crazed evil"

And more problems with Korean names:
Nam Joo-Hyuk = "numbers yoked" (GF) "not joking" (JB)
Shin Se-Kyung = "shins again"
Lee Joon-Gi = "donkey" (later) "zucchini"
Moon Chae-Won = "window on" (later) "wind chill"
Kang So-ra = "comes it off"

But at other times they actually got Shin Se-kyung and Kim So-hyun right! You can do it, Youtube! Fighting!!

Thanks, Javabeans and GirlFriday! I'm pretty much in agreement with you on the shows that I watched. Cool mugs, BTW. ;-)

Much as I'd been looking forward to the next Lee Joon-gi drama after MOON LOVERS: SCARRED HEART, I couldn't sit through umpteen episodes of a whacked-out serial killer. I'd already watched at least five seasons of the original CRIMINAL MINDS. I stuck with the Korean version through the demise of the boss's wife, and threw in the towel with regret, but also relief. VOICE had already filled my annual quota of darkness and sociopathic killing. Amazingly enough, the sociopathy in LOOKOUT did not punch my buttons the way it did in CRIMINAL MINDS. The show was terrific until several characters started acting too stupid to live in the final episode or so. I wasn't happy with the ending, but it made logical sense and was in keeping with the leader's personality.

To make up for canning CRIMINAL MINDS, I decided to watch GUNMAN IN JOSEON, which I'd been saving for a rainy day. I just finished watching this morning. That took care of my LJG sageuk withdrawal. Come the next rainy day, I'll have to rewatch ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE. ;-)

I skipped BRIDE OF THE WATER GOD entirely. I prefer to have my supernatural deities cavorting in a conveniently unspecified distant past. For this reason I'm not sure whether I'm actually going to watch HWAYUGI after all. Plus I haven't had time to familiarize myself with “Journey to the West.” (Maybe that's a good thing?)

Much as I love Yeon Woo-jin, the premise of INTROVERTED BOSS didn't grab me, and I'm glad I passed on it. He was terrific in SEVEN DAY QUEEN. I also watched OJAKGYO BROTHERS and the drama special JUST AN ORDINARY LOVE STORY.

I watched a couple of episodes of MANHOLE and felt my grey matter shrivelling, so ceased torturing myself. Initially I tuned in to HOSPITAL SHIP for Ha Ji-won, but couldn't drum up enthusiasm for it, so cut it loose. I watched DAMO instead. That floated my boat. ;-)

For some odd reason, I was able to watch RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK. Probably because I didn't take it too seriously. Come to think of it, I may have been viewing it for the sageuk equivalent of comic relief while watching SEVEN DAY QUEEN, which was epically tragic and based on actual history.

TOMORROW WITH YOU left me kind of flat, despite the great smooches. Aside from the false pretenses under which So-joon married Ma-rin, I could not abide her abusive harridan of a mother, and much of the time, she was no prize herself as she drank herself into oblivion. The subway as time-travel mechanism started out kind of cool, but became as overdone as Subway PPLs. So-joon's trying to preempt fate ended up wreaking havoc in the lives of other parties. I could make a case for it painting his employee into such a corner that he resorted to murder. When you think about it, that really sucks. In the words of Be Bop Deluxe, there are “No Trains to Heaven.”

I wouldn't worry too much about Hwayugi because the drama is unlikely to be anything like the stories in JttW. While they may have borrowed the characters - nothing of the premise seems anything like the relationships, character motivation or story arc within JttW.

Tomorrow with You was plagued by the paradox of time travel (especially time travel back and forth to the near future where two versions of you coexist) The obvious thing is that his future self could have simply left a diary or clear reasonings of the situation to guide his past self as to the pitfalls of his actions on the timeline. (say on an online diary) Instead there was this grasping at straws thing which doesn't make a lot of sense.

@tummy,

Thanks for your observations on HWAYUGI. I always get a little nervous when dealing with famous Asian literature of which I'm totally ignorant. So maybe I can just relax and watch the shenanigans. Cha Seung-won is one of my faves, and I recently watched THE KING 2HEARTS and loved Lee Seung-gi in it. With your encouragement, I'll give it a shot. ;-)

As for TOMORROW WITH YOU, the time travel elements did indeed become very wearing. IIRC, the first time traveller kept a log of his actions for exactly the reason you mention. The old meet-yourself-coming-and-going got to be too much. Arrgh! Luckily, enough time has passed that I don't remember the details very well. REBEL gave me a much better story to sink my teeth into. ;-)

The time travel paradox....often so hit and mis for Kdrama.

This is why the Japanese movie: "Tomorrow, I will Date Yesterday's You" is so interesting.

The best time travel shows find the paradox...realise the sorrow embedded in it... and craft it as the story.

Manhole : I think I watched a little part and stopped it. Except the teaser when they are dancing, nothing was appealing to me. The hero was just useless.
BOTWG : I didn't start because of the casting. I'm tired to watch Im Joo Hwan in second lead when he's a so good actor.
Criminal Mind: This drama is so boring. I have the 3 last episodes on my tablet and I hope one day I will finish it.
Ruler : It was frustrating to see this drama to have so much success when the written was so bad. Personaly, I liked the female second lead because she was the only one trying to stop the villain while he was her family. The heros were useless. And I didn't feel chemistry between them when I sould have felt it.
Revolutionary Love: I started it but the female et male leads were so stupid that I stopped after the first episode.
Hospital Ship: I liked this drama. The different stories were warm and beautiful (with their patients, between the ship crew, with their families, etc.). For the chemistry, I did feel it but when I watched the BTS, I thought they had more chemistry in the real life. They were really cute together (I mean who doesn't want to warm her hands on Kang Min Hyuk abs ? :p )
Introverted Boss: I just watched it for Yun Woo Jin. But yeah the story was bad...
Reunited World: I didn't like the story. The 19 years old boy seems to be more mature than the 32 years old woman... It was really weird.

I was disapointed by : Hwarang: The Beginning, Fight for My Way, Missing 9 (I stopped it), While You Were Sleeping, The Liar and His Lover ( I stopped it too) and Black.

RE: "Ruler : ... so much success when the [writing] was so bad"

For me I could not get over its fatal flaw. Who would ever trust that the prince behind the mask was ever the rightful heir?

Just as the villains could replace the prince without evidence, so could the King. (Was there ever a rightful heir behind the mask at all?)

I stuck through Criminal Minds and Revolutionary Love and I believe I deserve a medal. Criminal Minds was that one show I went in just out of curiosity, and ended staying just for the guilt like Javabeans mentioned. I wanted to love Revolutionary Love, for Shiwon's sake and just couldn't. I did stick to it until the end, and the end did do a better job, but still it was a big disappointment. Tomorrow With You was so confusing that I dropped it on the second episode, Shi Mina couldn't save that one. Oh Well here is to next year!

'Revolutionary Love' was good IF you ignored the first 4 episodes AND the finale AND abandoned the notion of a central romance. It worked fairly good as a 'social conscience' drama. But otherwise the hero was just too imbecilic to realize he was being a super-creepy stalker to someone who DIDN'T appreciate it. Even the second male lead, when he finally confessed his own unrequited love the heroine was like "What? Eeew!"

To me, Revolutionary Love's tone and characters seemed very derivative of Shopping King Louis. So I'm not sure the "off" seeming portrayals were Choi Si Won or Kang So Ra's fault. It may have been a stylistic directorial choice that they were forced to comply with.

In a similar way, the characters in Juggers seem very derivative of the ones in She Was Pretty. However, the differences in the actors' natural ability to convey warmth turn She Was Pretty's very likable characters in, into unlikeable ones in Jugglers. (Exception: Lee Won-Geun)

BoTWG: gave up around episode 12/13. "energy suck all around" - this was a really good description of the drama. I actually liked SSK's prickly character in it, but the whole thing was really bland. The total opposite of the lush drawings. The writer did Arang and the Magistrate, so I was expecting some strong fantasy world-building which we didn't end up get.

Criminal Minds: Gave up around episode 14/15. Ugh, the waste of a Lee Junki and Moon Chae Won pairing. Reunion pairings tend to happen when the actors and audience have fond memories of the first time th actor and actress were paired... so I really doubt there will ever be a reunion. I was offended on MCW's behalf. She was practically a background actor for a good chunk of the drama.

I was totally on the Tomorrow With You ship. I think this may be the case where the beautiful directing and the actors really elevated the writing and the characters for me and got me believing in the couple and their decisions. I also thought it was sort of hot ad refreshing that the hero is not that much taller than the heroine (easier access for making out!)

It would be interesting to get your takes on "drama's that were most disappointing" - which this vlog sometimes veered into but didn't address specifically.

By this, there are probably three sub categories that come into mind.

1) Dramas that were hyped but botched or executed their premise poorly. In this subcategory probably BotWG, Hospital Ship - for reasons already mentioned.

2) Dramas that appeared to have taken a left turn some part through the drama that did not feel true to the beginning. The "false promise" drama. Examples for me are SWDBS, MQ - both of which I felt promised a kick ass heroine storyline that somehow never materialized. Black and ToL probably should fit in this category.

3) Maybe hard to define but the "WTF? Who thought this was a good idea?" drama. Examples are Meloholic, Manhole, RL. Those where you have to ask - "didn't anyone read the script/screenplay before you started this"

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

So totally agree with you. I was disappointed with SWDBS especially. I was duped into watching but based on the empty promise setup (and ofc PHS to be blamed) and yet this drama got mentioned in the Best Drama vlog though more referring to the comedic moment. Oh and there's Hwarang which I love for its first half but took the wrong turn by the later half (again I blame PHS for getting me to endure this mess).

BOTWG was meh...had no high hopes for it but the main lead was really bad. To be honest I did not like WYWS either...I just did not feel any chemistry between Suzy and LJS. I dropped it after 4 episodes.
Introverted boss was boring most of the time and the whole resolution that made the suicide of the sister less an issue was just wrong. I did finish it but it was a hassle to do so.

TEMPERATURE OF LOVE started out with such promise, and then totally convinced me that Hyun-soo (Seo Hyun-jin) should have just eloped with Jung-sun's (Yang Se-jong) whacked-out Mom (Lee Mi-sook -- who is excellent in MONEY FLOWER, BTW) and left the chef in peace. If the show had done a mash-up with ANTIQUE, Jung-sun could have had a fabulous time with Jung-woo (Kim Jae-wook). To add insult to injury, screechy manipulator Hong-ah (Jo Bo-ah) ended up bagging sous chef Won-joon (Sim Hee-seop) after all, which infuriated me.

What a waste of an excellent cast. Grrr. The only consolation is that YSJ turned in yet another strong performance following his epic quadruple role in DUEL. SHJ's performance was fine, but her character was a freaking nutcase. Ditto for KJW's inscrutable character. I have to hand it to JBA -- she did a great job, it's just that her character was so totally irredeemable, and was apparently kidnapped from SWEET STRANGER AND ME / MAN LIVING IN OUR HOUSE.

Honestly, you are giving more credit to KSH and even YSH in Ruler than what they deserve. In a way, Ruler was able to show that they are not yet at the level to elevate a weak character despite the praise on their acting that beanies have been giving them. I know the second leads especially Sohee were NOT good but I feel that they are being further drag through the mud just because they were able to overshadow the "beanies beloved" first leads.
