Forest of Secrets writer nabs Jo Seung-woo, Lee Dong-wook for medical drama

Jo Seung-woo, Lee Dong-wook

This has buzz project written all over it: The writer of last year’s acclaimed thriller Forest of Secrets, Lee Soo-yeon, has a new drama in the works over at JTBC titled Life, and has lined up Jo Seung-woo (Forest of Secrets) and Lee Dong-wook (The Lonely Shining Goblin) to star. I bet a bunch of people jumped onboard before even finishing that sentence.

This project was first announced last summer, but with the addition of these actors, it’s got my attention all over again. If you’re concerned about the fate of the Forest of Secrets Season 2 that’s in the works, don’t worry: Lee Soo-yeon has said that Season 2, while still just in the early discussion stages, would be next on her list after Life. So the scheduling of this shouldn’t affect the other show.

Life will be a medical drama set in the emergency center of a large hospital. Lee Dong-wook is set to play a medical specialist (it’s unclear what kind) at the emergency center, while Jo Seung-woo will play the commanding head of operations at the hospital. I can’t wait to see Jo Seung-woo in another drama (it’s like he’s making up for all those years he only filmed movies!) because he’s one of those powerhouses who always delivers, and Lee Dong-wook can be super compelling in the right role (see: Reaper).

Admittedly, there’s not a lot to go on with that description, but Forest of Secrets has raised expectations for what this writer will do next, and I imagine she’ll find a way to bring suspense and smartly written conflict to the medical genre. If I had just one wish, it’s that the production changes this working title to something more distinctive, since competitor cable station tvN also has their anticipated drama Live coming up soon.

Life will air on JTBC later this year; a timeslot has not yet been specified.

A drama with Lee So-yeon (FoS) as the writer and Jo Seung-woo and Lee Dong-wook as leads?

I'm not really into medical dramas but having a stellar writer and actors makes me want to go on board!

I'm a sucker for medical dramas (even though that evil CEO/hospital trope just makes me want to rip my hair off) so having amazing leads and an amazing writer? Sign me upppppp!! I'm really excited for this even though FoS is still on my want-to-watch list (sadly). I can't wait to see LDW in a drama again because his role in Goblin made me cry buckets and proved to me his skills (which I never really doubted). I REALLY CAN'T WAIT!!

what's your favorite korean medical drama? I'd totally love a few recommendations. I love medical dramas a lot (I can totally binge watch an entire season of Grey's in one sitting) but I seem to only find the korean medical dramas that are a bit cringey to watch---meaning not very believable when it comes to the medical situations--from the acting to the dialogue. So yes, any recommendations will be helpful! ^_^

Golden time is the good one. I watched it up till episode 8, but give up because of my personal dislike with the genre. But i can already tell drama is a good one. Ok I'm not being sarcastic lol. But this is real medical drama.

"Golden Time" was good but my favorite is still "The White Tower" with Kim Myung-min and PD Ahn Pan-seok.
My latest was "Romantic Doctor Kim" with Han Suk-kyu etc.

Medical dramas is not one of my favorite genre but I'd tolerate it if my favorite actors are in it.

Well i haven't watched white tower so I might be wrong. But based on a review i read, it's more like sageuk in a medical wardrobe. Meanwhile in Golden Time case, it's really pure about medical problem and the flaw of system in korea about facility on their hospital in general. Which is just so good.it's apity i can't stand certain scene because some of them feels too real.

1

That's what I said about "Forest of Secrets," a modern day sageuk. All too real with corruptions that are fresh and familiar from the last administration.
I found the flawed characters the most compelling and realistic.
I love uncompromising stories like "White Tower" with main focus on the characters.
It was a pure medical drama to me without the romance etc.
Kim Myung-min gave one hell of a performance and the rest of the cast were great too!

2

@kiara if this writers can be able to show less surgery, and other technical aspect in medical and more on character development and abit realism in the real world , then I'm on board. I don't know why they need to show surgery scene in almost every episode. Medical is not only a surgeon ffs haha

2

Talking about White Tower- I read MBC will re-air "White Tower" when they have drama break (after currently airing dramas like INAR complete). It was specially chosen^^.
I also enjoyed
Obstetric and gynecology doctors,
brain
and Good doctor.

1

Have you tried Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim? I love the medical procedural in it so much.

4

I will suggest Romantic Doctor and Brain. I really loved both of them. If RD had han suk kyu Brain has Shin ha kyun.

You should check out OBGYN! It's about (you guessed it) obgyn doctors and their interactions with patients and their personal stuff. Very lowkey and sweet, but also realistic and might make you cry a lot. (I think I cried every episode lol)

seriously, that's the best recommendation because half the time I'm cringing at the dialogue because it sounds so fake --even the actions. I mean there's only so many scenes of doing cpr while on top of a patient on a gurney I can stand -- especially when everyone around is just calmly not freaking out

Yes, I jumped on board without even finishing the sentence. Haha. You had me at FoS writer. I am intrigued to see what kind of medical drama this author will pen. FoS is leaps and bounds from a hospital drama. If it has even a smidgen of the depth of character and sense of camaraderie of FoS I will be well pleased. I can't wait to find out!!

I can only hope the rest of the cast is as phenomenal as these two.

Yeah, chaebol hospital directors <—— reason medical dramas give me hives. Hope the writer and cast do well and don’ t make it do or die each episode or give a doctor super powers that allow him to see that blood clot forming. Oh, and no evil ex girlfriend second female lead doctors either. Truck of Doom is allowed, as the hospital needs patients.

So, has LDW decided that he prefers second lead roles or is this a kind of two-male-leads drama?

4

Required fields are marked *

It's two male lead drama. In 90% of articles yeasterday and today (even the one Dramabeans has used as source) Lee Dong Wook's name always stands first. I doubt second male lead's name would stand first in headlines and in text, before main lead if he's second lead. And in news as well is stated that they're both up to lead a drama.

I'm not too sure who is going to be the main male lead here, but I guess it is supposed to be two-male-leads drama, and their news also came up together.

Required fields are marked *

I don't know why but at this point in his career I can't imagine Jo Seung-woo being a second lead--especially after his performance in Forest. I mean I love Lee Dong Wook--I think he's super talented, but if anyone is going to be a second lead I think it'd be him. Either ways I'm soo excited to see them in a drama together ^_^

Required fields are marked *

Jo Seung-woo is definitely a different level of actor, that I don't mind he is doing main or second lead, to be honest. He is picky, so I'm sure he is more interested with the character and script at whole. Second lead in drama like this is better than usual second lead in typical romcom or romance drama.

10
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

If you're stable in your career and are as skilled as JSW is, a second lead in a drama like this is better than a male lead in some of the other dramas out there.

3

Not sure if it's allowed to post links here, but if you'll check drama's profile on Naver or Daum (Korean biggest searching engines) you'll see that Lee Dong Wook comes first in cast which a priory means that he can't be second lead. But as well I believe that JSW won't be second lead. My guess they will play equally lead roles but will be rivals (sadly, because LDW is perfect in creating bromance). And idk why, I feel there won't be good or bad guy, both will be multi-layered. As well I think women here will have secondary roles. We need to wait and see.

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I like both of them A LOT. I'm ok with any one or both of them being first or second. I just hope they are not hateful rivals.

1

I’m thinking that it could be like RDTK where Han Suk Kyu and Yoo Yeon Seok headlined and played very different roles but were amazing in each. It could be more of an ensemble cast as well.

4

When there is one leading male and one leading female, we easily recognize the two as equal leads (even when the plot and characterization sidelines one of them..). It's weird when you have two guy names, we wonder who is "the lead" is and who "the second lead" is. Why can't they be on equal footing? I agree with you that LDW and JSW will play equal lead roles but as rivals.

I think back to Two Cops...where it seemed to market Hyeri and Jo Jung Suk as the leading pair (and sometimes tried to force it in the drama), when really it's Jo Jung Suk and Kim Sun Ho.

2

Jo Seung-woo and Lee Dong-wook together in the same drama? Girl I'm sold.

I think he is decent in romcom and quirky roles, he is like an older version of Park Seo-joon for me. I also noticed his acting vibe kinda similar with Lee Joon-hyuk,so maybe that's why he is casted in this drama. Probably with a great team, it will turn out well for him. Jo Seung-woo might be a great assistance too.

I saw him first in a film, The Beauty Inside, and although I didn’t know who he was then, he was good in that role. And then there was Goblin which he excelled in my opinion. I can’t imagine anyone else being Reaper. He had great comedic timing and was heartbreaking there as well.

@kiara other than in wild romance and my girl, I'm not a fan of his other performances . Particularly In blade man and goblin. Especially in goblin. 1

Yes we are because it's not even his fault that his character was unintentionally bipolar.

1

Kim Eun-sook's drama is a perfect choice when you want more fame for rising actors such as Kim Ji-won or as a re-discovery role for established actors like Gong-yoo. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky to work in her drama.

I was hyped since yesterday when I read the news elsewhere nut I waited till the news makes it to dramabeans because I love the way javabeans & hrilfriday share the news with a flavour of their personel touch, usually a comic one, anyway, I am hyperveltilating right now because in my wildest dream i haven't imagined Jo Seung Woo would come back to dramaland this soon, but I guess this geeeeenius of a writer changed his opinion about the drama landscape being so messy, especially since Forest of Secrets was totally preproduced
JSW wouldn't accept a role if it wasn't a meaty one, I hope it would be as challenging & larger than life as the one played by Shin Ha Kyun (another one of my favourite actors) in Brain, & HOPEFULLY they won't ruin the casting with some idols, they won't keep up with actors of this caliber
Finally something to look forward this year

Despite the male centric story, I really do hope she will write another compelling female character(s) who shines on her own merit with her own interesting story line and good character development. *fingercross*
