[In Defense Of] An ode to Faith

By Alaskan

Listen my Beanies and you shall hear
of a widely panned drama that I hold very dear
In 2012, I tried a new genre
of serial programs called Korean drama
My first one was Faith and I have to admit
that it began my addiction—it thrilled me to bits
I was quickly sucked into this fantasy story
of loyalty, love, and violent glory
I would watch Faith for hours and hours
Just to see all the villains with their magical powers

I wanted to hang out with Court Lady Choi
And who can’t help but love every Woodalchi boy?
Lee Min-ho as the General captured my heart
He was my kind of hero—kind, courageous and smart
Best of all was Eun-soo, as tough as one gets
She was clever and brave as she faced all the threats
She kept General Choi Young on the tips of his toes
and… honestly? Led him around by his nose
You may laugh, but I loved the king and the queen
And when she miscarried, I actually cried at that scene

I liked all of the intrigue, the politics, the war
(because for me, light romances are a bit of a bore)
So I say to my friends, I don’t care that they think
that the directing was clumsy, the villains absurd
I liked that Oh-sung played Ki Chul with a wink
and I liked Sung Hoon, though he said barely a word
And though I agree that the directing was blah
still the drama did touch me and isn’t that all
that each of us ultimately, eagerly looks for?
So keep the faith all you Beanies, forevermore

(With sincere apologies to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, as well as poets everywhere.)

Great poem! Love it.

I am pleasantly surprised to read that this was many a beanies first kdrama.

It was my first kdrama too and I have a soft spot in my heart for it. I still rewatch certain scenes when I need a pick me up.

Agree. I am still reading the book. I actually thought the directing was fine and have different views on the ending scene.

Thank you so much! Faith was one of my first kdramas as well. In spite of its obvious shortcomings, pedestrian directing and Lee Min-Ho's ridiculous hair, it was magical and charming. Strangely enough, with all these "X-men" running around, it also felt historically "sound" - more so than "Empress Ki" that I have watched recently. From time to time, I re-watch Choi's little stint in the 21st century and his epic lightning blast - it never fails to lift my spirit!

Quality content 👌
This was a noteworthy defense, @tinak . Thank you for writing this. I didn't watch LMH in BOF but was thoroughly amazed with him in City Hunter so I decided to watch his next projects. I remember enjoying FAITH when it aired the next year. It was just enough fantasy, drama and angst for me so it was such a delight waiting for episodes every weekk <3

Faith was my first kdrama, and I still love it. LMH will always be the General, and Yoon Kyun Sang as Dukman...my favorites. Wish Kim Jong Moon was in more dramas, he was fantastic in Faith, which remains one of my all time favorite dramas. The OST is on my favorite playlist, it was exceptional in that nearly all tracks were really good.

Faith was my first Kdrama to watch too...except I didn't fall into the Kdrama rabbit-hole until 2015....now I'm happily sucked/stuck in it.

What a great poem! And I love Faith too! Agree with everything you said. Isn't Kim Mi Kyung a great actress, too?

Very nice poem. Kdrama addicts can do anything: write poems, odes, make beautiful paintings, analyze every episode, every scene and character to bits and pieces. All of it just to cover up the guilt of simple pleasure of enjoying watching their favorite actor again and again. C’mon, ladies. Us watching Faith is all about Lee Min Ho. Am I not right? Don’t get angry. Personally, I discovered Lee Min Ho in BOF, then watched Faith, Personal Taste and all his other dramas. Some shows were better than others. Some worse. Who cares. Then we discover other favorite actor and watch as many dramas as possible with him. Liking his leading lady in a drama is a bonus. Then we might watch her dramas as well. Korea is blessed with dozens and dozens of handsome actors and talented actresses who work hard and can act and sing. Thank God for Kdrama. Amen. That was my ...ode? little contribution to this drama and blog. :D

I remember a lot of folks bemoaned how the lead female was "too old" for the pairing when the final casting was announced. I still think the chemistry is wonderful between them. I love kiss scenes as much as anyone, but I also really enjoy the "so close" moments, and this show has them in spades. That type of tension can be quite thrilling in its own right.

For a show that had many problems even before the cast was final, it is still one of my top ten.

What I like best about it with the rewatchings is seeing so many bits that become relevant later in the show. With a larger cast, all those moments matter, and I like what they managed to thread together throughout the story.

As many have said, this show was not without flaws. Yet, I can't think of a single show that has none. I know some will happily argue the point, but to me, none are without flaws.

A show where the cast or story or whatever aspect you enjoy can still prevail despite those flaws is always a wonder to find and sometimes even a treasure.

Thanks for the shout out for this often panned drama. The more love it can get, the better.

It was my first drama too! I saw it on Netflix and thought "doctor goes back in time? Cool!" Watched the first couple episodes and was like "what the heck is this??" and started googling like crazy....korean drama, Lee Min Ho, oppa, etc. That's how I found dramabeans and I never looked back!

In 2014 I was browsing Netflix and came across a drama. The plot had everything I love; romance, action, history, and a little bit of sci-fi. In no time I had devoured it and went in search for more like it. That's when I found this amazing new world know as Kdramas. Without Faith I wouldn't know Korean dramas and music the way I do today. I fell in love with it and it hold it in a very special place in my heart. I still re-watch it every now and then. You could say it changed my life :)

I am so happy you wrote that! i still watch Faith, once in a while, can you believe that? First of all, warrior and doctor is one of the most effective archetypes in romance, Death and Life, Yin and Yan etc. 'Descendants of the Sun' exploited the same archetype. Plus, it made me discover the story of Choi Young, even prompting me to read a book about him ! the only thing who left me in real disappointment was the final scene, when they just look at each other, without touching of hugging... A pity that the writer could not come up with something more memorable... like a final kiss!!! Anyway, thanks for reminding us of this great drama !!!

Faith was my first Kdrama and got me hooked on LMH. But it was so bad! It amazes me now that it managed to hook me so deep, but I do still kind of love it even if I could never defend it.

It was my 3rd K-drama and it's a sentimental memory for me as well. I never liked Lee Min Ho in anything again, but he rocked this role. And it's like Korean Outlander.

OMG I loved this drama so much! I did not read any reviews until after I had finished. I didn't want to read any spoilers. Your write up was fun. Yes, I know "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere." Haha! You did very well! The best thing was watching Lee Min-Ho at such a young age. He was amazing then as now. As an ignorant American, I had to read up on Korean history to learn about the REAL characters in this drama. All in all, worth my time for sure.
