[In Defense Of] Bottom of the 9th With 2 Outs

By @mihoo

One of my most favorite tropes in dramaland is friends-to-lovers, not only because most of the time it causes fun romantic hijinks, but also because it’s something that can happen in real life. I mean, the probability of falling in love with your best friend is higher than crossing paths with a spoiled second-generation chaebol who falls head over heels for you and makes a 180 degree personality shift, right? Though it’s a popular trope, I feel that people are missing out on one of THE BEST dramas in the genre.

Besides being a drama about two best friends falling in love, Bottom of the 9th With 2 Outs is also a great slice-of-life drama that involves other popular tropes such as noona romance and a secret forced cohabitation, and it has great friendships. What else does a drama need to be perfect?

The story centers around Hong Nan-hee (Su Ae), a 30-year-old single woman whose dream is to become a book writer, and Byun Hyung-tae (Lee Jung-jin), a laid-back guy who is a team leader in a marketing company and owns an apartment. These two have been best friends since birth. Like every average K-drama parent, Nan-hee’s mother is constantly pressuring her to give up her dream of becoming a writer and find a husband instead.

After one big fight with her mother, Nan-hee ends up leaving her mother’s house and making a deal with Hyung-tae to rent his house for a few months while he is on vacation. But the trip doesn’t go as planned and he returns shortly after leaving.

So they end up living together in secret, after he blew all her rent money on the trip. Their cohabitation is simply hilarious to watch as they go from regular friends to hating each other’s guts for simple things like breathing too loud or sleeping on the couch instead of the bed. They thought they knew everything about each other, but living together with a person opens up a whole new world full of bickering and romantic hijinks.

This drama excels in making both protagonists relatable and believable characters. Nan-hee is a woman who just turned 30 and still wants to find her true love, but is afraid that time is outrunning her and she might have already missed her chance. On the other hand, turning 30 to Hyung-tae means being more secure in his career and also making peace with the past and embracing the future.

Their relationship involves a lot of bickering and making fun of each other, but when times get tough they are always there to support one another. When one of them is feeling down or simply wants to rant about something that happened that day, they just go for drinks and sing all night long. Don’t we all need a friend like that?

Their rapport is so real and natural that you truly believe that they’re lifelong friends. The little details like them sharing their day with one another to becoming a couple in a natural way—they’re not forced at all.

Unlike every friends-to-lovers drama where the leads try to completely deny their feelings for each other, they actually acknowledge that their friendship is kind of a blur sometimes and joke about it, and that’s why the drama is more mature than others. I love the way Nan-hee describes their relationship when Hyung-tae briefly dates someone else: “It’s like someone is taking away my favorite toy.” That’s why it’s so difficult to actually start dating for them because they risk losing one of the most precious relationships they have.

This drama hits all the right spots for me, as a sucker for romantic comedies paired with a slice-of-life feel. I really think this drama is criminally underrated.

Despite being from 2007, it’s not outdated at all and it’s perfectly fine to watch it in 2018, so if you haven’t watched it yet, please give it a try. I promise you won’t regret it!

Also, it doesn’t hurt that Lee Jung-jin is super hot and his character has a great sense of humor, and his chemistry with Su Ae is amazing! I bet you’ll end the drama wishing you had a Hyung-tae in your life too.

Awww, I love this drama. It is really sweet, and the leads are great. Byun Hyung-tae is adorable even if he has a late 2000s mullet.

I love this drama! It is one of my favorites too. I am always surprised that more people don't talk about it. The two characters just feel real and the way they work through issues is so relatable. There are no chaebols or geniuses (and Nan-hee actually isn't that great of a writer), but somehow the slice-of-life is still very entertaining.

I need to watch this drama again. I watched it when I first got into dramas and did not enjoy it. I think now that I'm older and had 9 years of drama viewing under my belt, I will appreciate it more.

This is my all-time favorite drama, and one of the first I ever watched. I remember I had just finished Your Beautiful at the recommendation of a favorite author and was scrolling through the Dramabeans ratings looking for something else I might like. I rewatch this drama nearly every year, at least in part, and find new things to love.

In particular, I love that Nan Hee is at a crossroad in her career and is trying to decide between pursuing her dream or nurturing her talent for the job she has. I love watching her navigate her professional relationships and figure out how to be independent for the first time.

I also love how melodramatic she is, her terrible taste in clothes, and the complexity of her friendships. More than any other drama heroine she feels like she exists in the real world.

Lee Jung Jin was also my first drama crush. I have watched at least the first episode of all his shows (please pick better projects) and his character in this set the tone for me of what I wanted in a romantic hero. I wish there were more Hyung-taes.

OMG thank you for these words. I am so on the same page. I have watched this some years ago and I might will rewatch it now that I read your text. The chemistry was cracking when they went in for the lovers part. Also, Lee Jung-jin never, n e v e r looked that hot again.

I liked Lee Jung Jin’s look in Runaway Plan B. Unfortunately his storyline was the only thing I liked about that drama.

I say “liked” as if I didn’t call Lee Jung Jin Officer Superfine for the entirety of Runaway Plan B. (His romantic interest Yoon Jin Seo was Officer Awesome.) To this day friends and family ask me about Officer Superfine as if he was a real person in my life.

Haha, ok I see :). I tried to watch Runaway Plan B right after Full House and I could not get to the end of episode one because of the main leads, so maybe I give it another shot just for Lee Jung Jin then

What we need is an edit where it's just his storyline. Maybe Rain shows up for random fights in a pool with Lee Jung Jin, but the rest of that ridiculous is gone. The first episode is pretty, "How Did This Get Made?" but the show does improve eventually. The Dramabeans girls had some fun comments on it if you breeze through their recaps.

This one is on the top of my friends to lover dramas list. I liked it so much I had to suffer through the bad quality of the videos because the serves were all down at the time :/ Their friendship was stellar and the fact they didn't get into a relationship right away added to the story. I just love it ^^ Now I feel like rewatching it LOL

I actually started watching this a couple of months ago but stopped around Ep 4 'cos I got tempted by a more recent drama. I think I need to pick up where I left off now.

With that said, from what I've watched, I do agree that their friendship really is quite grounded and realistic, the way they bicker and all. Plus Lee Jung Jin was really really hot here ♥

Ahh, I didn't know this drama needed defending!! It's one of my earlier Kdrama loves, along with 'My Lovely Kim Sam-soon' and 'Dal-Ja's Spring' - I think I've watched it about 5-6 times already, and would happy re-watch it again; It's seriously ❤️❤️❤️

Me neither! I saw the title and was like "who is saying this drama is bad?!!" I loved it and I thought it stood out at the time by having the two leads not be antagonistic towards each other and by having the hero not be an asshole. Lee Jung Jin was adorable in it. I loved how cool Soo Ae/Nan Hee appeared.

Right?! I’ve been dying to see him in another romcom since - still waiting!! It was my first introduction to Soo-ae too - amazing actress. She has this grounded quality about her which makes her acting feel a lot more natural.

Watching old drama never seems outdate to me. Aslong as is still in 2000's. I watched MISA from 2004 in 2010 and watched Evasive Egency Enquiry from 2007 this week. Never say never with oldies. The problem is either the video is still available or not. Haha

I like so many things about this drama. One small example - how the other woman tries to erase Nan-hee's presence from the apartment when she's already gone. And how that helps Hyung-tae figure out his feelings.

Thanks for the write-up! I personally don't think this drama needs defending, since it's pretty solid and one that I also remember very fondly.. : ) My memory of it is a little shoddy by now, so maybe a re-watch is on the horizon.

I think I have to watch this drama again 'cause it was really good, but I need to remember it. I loved their friendship and how it grew to so much more than that. Even though there were times that I felt a Little bit bored I truly believe that I would enjoy it so much more now days!!!

Thanks for your defense! Bottom of the 9th is one of my favorites of the friends to lovers trope, which is my absolute favorite. What I loved most about it when I initially watched it, was that it felt like me and my best friend, 10+ years in the future. No romance has ever come between us, but this drama made me stop and question that. Still no romance shared, because I don’t live in a drama, but I still have a soft spot for how close to home this drama felt.

Ms. Greenfield, you are in for a treat =) .

To be honest, I am way more into the 2000-2010 sensibility than in todays lineup. If you want to see what I consider the crown jewel of K-Dramas, look for "Flowers for my Life". Please beware, this is a very deep Drama and the one I recommend to grieving people in the acceptance phase.

ehehehe. Good, I look forward to it.

Also, someone has recommened 'Flowers for my life' earlier as well to me. In the context of a post about Andante - which explores themes of death and how people live their lives knowing that they will one day die. Will definitely watch it. Thanks for the reminder. :)

I grew up reading and loving books about friends/enemies-turned-lovers (Anne of Green Gables, Louisa May Alcott's books), but somehow I can't stomach it on screen anymore. It also doesn't help that I watched The Time That We Were Not in Love. Scarred forever. Why did I watch until the end? WHY?

I'll give this drama a try though. I've read lots of good reviews and I like Su Ae. Besides (and excuse me for my old-fashioned taste) but I really dig 90s-2000s hair. My favourite football oppas of that era wore it. 😄

I love 9 End 2 Outs -- one of only a few dramas I've watched multiple times over. It's truly a hidden gem.

I also defend the Hyung-tae mullet. Lee Jung-jin is smokin' hot in that haircut -rawr!

So true, it still feels modern despite being an older drama

I must be honest. Friends to lovers trope is also one of my favorites. So I was eager to watch this show for a long time. Since it was not available in Viki (at least in my country), and due to occupations and other recent dramas and so, it took me forever to start watching it like a year ago or longer, and I watched, I must have watched the half of it but somehow it got me tiring that they liked each other but insisted in relationships with somebody else. Me, eventually I got busy and because I am curious, I think I went up to watch the end and see if they managed to be honest, etc.
I cheated, I know, and maybe one of these days I will pick up where I left and watch it properly, or maybe I will binge it all from the beginning, trying to enjoy the acting and other elements. I mean, after your defense, I feel like finishing my business with this drama, because there were parts I truly liked.
Thanks for posting.

Whenever Nan Hee stops dating the baseball player (in episode 9 or 10), the show completely shifts. It's like lightening in a bottle from that point on, IMO. Honestly, when I re-watch I start at episode 9 and finish from there. The last few episodes alone are enough to make it a classic.

Wait, Lee Jung Jin, not gonna google until later to check if I'm right but I think he is the hot guy in Fugitive Plan B with rain, right? That was the first time I saw a hot korean guy in a drama, yea, the others are hot just coz they are good-looking but in Fugitve Paln B he was it's-getting-hot-in-here kind of sexy, y'know.. so anyway, didn't see him after that until Ms. Temper and Nam Jung Gi, can't believe it was the same guy, what the hell happened? Well, PS happened, as to why would he even need it, I dunno. I will just remember him as the hot guy in fugitive plan B...let's leave it at that.

Dear dramabeans,

I saw full house in 2008 - 2 hours special airing every saturday on some channnel. Upon accident google search browsed dramabeans site in 2012 , and upon reading the review section and checking out the rating each drama received, i started with bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. If javabeans and girlfriday each dn't rate this drama sooo high , I would never would have been curious to check it out. I would have missed the whole korean chapter in my life. So my many thanks for your ratings which made me trust you guys and dnt dismiss you guys :) just like that. Thankyou soo far for the wonderful journey I made with your help.

Dear Ms. Mihoo, this is a show that needs no defense, just more advertising ;) .

And yes, this is one of my all-time favorite K-Dramas (I only keep in my hard drive three Dramas: this one, Flowers for my Life and Master's Sun). I loved to bits every moment Nanhee and Hyungtae spend together. One of my favorite scenes is when Hyungtae sees a billboard with his guitarist ex-girlfriend and seems dispirited... she understands his feelings and doodles a mustache on her!!! (that is a friend). Next, when they end up in a police station and coincide with her twentysomething boyfriend, Hyungtae ends up laughing since, well, "noona, you have some skills!!!" (in seducing a much younger man).

Another favorite character is the twentysomething hot coworker to Nanhee, which despite her young age is wiser and more focused than our lead (perharps since she is still not at a crossroad like Nanhee?).

All the cast is precious to me. This Drama is not only a romantic friends-to-lovers tale, but also a reflection on ageing, loneliness and the value of the relationships in our lives.

Popping in just to say that watched this after reading the series review on dramabeans and loved it! Yes lee jung jin was so hot in this and his chemistry with soo ae was amazing! Soo ae was wonderful as well. Not to mention there's a really young lee sang woo in it as well!
Most importantly, the friendships were the highlight for me. I really enjoyed how all the college friends remained friends into their 30s and didn't let romances (even the failed ones) ruin their friendship, and that guys and girls were friends before anything further developed. I feel that sometimes all these romance dramas really feed into this idea of sexual/romantic attraction between guys and girls first, when platonic guy-girl friendships are just as precious to portray.

P.S. The whole series is subbed on YouTube on the mbc channel, just that the episodes as are all chopped up. I watched the whole thing on YouTube btw and revisit it regularly :)

This drama has a permanent spot on my top 5 favorites list. I'm not a fan, like at all, of noona romances. (I'll spare you the rant.) Because of my disdain for them, 9th endings really picks up once junior is put to bed. It's once the noona romance is resolved that the show starts to really dig into why our couple are so reluctant to get together and we see just how much respect they have for each other. I appreciated the fair amount of give and take in this drama and felt so mature. We need more of this show.

This drama also talks about how we adjust our career dream when we realize we are not as good as we thought we were at a particular career. Nan-hee's dream is to be a writer. She has been working as an editor for a publishing company while also working on her own book. After some years of trying to finish her own book, she realizes she is a better editor than a writer. Like Nan-hee, many of us fall short of our own expectations. Facing and coming to terms with that disappointment, and learning to adjust our goals are struggles many of us identify with.
