[In Defense Of] Ho-gu’s Love

By HotCocoaGirl

Sometimes, the very description of a drama is enough to keep you from watching it. This was the case with Ho-gu’s Love (or Fool’s Love in one translation) and I when it first came out. Who wants to watch a story of a man holding so desperately to his first love that he allows, even invites, her to take advantage of him? I’m not sure what exactly had me pressing play on the first episode last summer, fully expecting to drop it after the first episode (though, if I had to guess it was either because of Choi Woo-shik’s extended cameo on Fight My Way that had me wishing to see him as a lead, or it was recommended by a Beanie).

But something magical happened, and by magical I mean realistic (which is magical in fiction). Ho-gu wasn’t a fool, he was a romantic idealist (depending on your definition, I suppose that might be the same thing) who saw the best in the people around him.

UEE’s character Do Do-hee wasn’t a careless jerk taking advantage of him, but a woman trying to do the right thing, one who didn’t talk much and tried not to care what others said (a female version of the tough guy with a secretly soft heart). And the baby, gah, adorable children have a way of reeling me in, as it did all the characters in the show.

Directing-wise, the show had a lovely way of showing flashbacks from the characters’ perspectives, which allowed it to both reveal and conceal character motivations (because really, who in high school knows what their crush or classmates are actually thinking). I also appreciated how the characters guarded their memories from high school, whether they were true or false, as in the case of the lawyer (played by 2AM’s Im Seulong) and Ho-gu’s twin sister (Lee Soo-kyung).

The slow reveal of Ho-gu and Do-hee’s high school relationship, so much sweeter and deeper than the crush from afar teased in the premise, had me happy and ranting to whoever would listen for days afterward (still ranting, hence this submission.) I’m keeping myself from giving spoilers right now.

Ho-gu himself was a highly relatable character. I empathized with him and his low self-esteem that kept him from realizing his feelings for Do-hee were mutual. His transformation in the drama had me rooting for him each step of the way as he became confident and self assured, for himself and the family that he gained along the way.

UEE also had me cheering for her, as she had to learn open up and trust other people. She was a strong, tough girl who could take care of herself, who fell for the sensitive guy but was too afraid of getting hurt to admit it. Ho-gu loved her strength and yet was able to see the person she was underneath the tough exterior, a person who needed support, just like everyone else. Her vulnerability in pregnancy and motherhood forced her to rely on Ho-gu, and he gave her someone to trust even as she gave him something to stand up and fight for.

These two are a great example of a couple who are able to build each other up, not ignoring each other’s shortcomings but coming together to create a family worth fighting for. Also, them defending each other and being so proud of their partner is adorable.

P.S. I know I got caught up in describing the central relationship, but know that the humor, plot, pacing and side characters are all quite lovely in this show as well. Especially Seulong as Byun Kang-chul, the lawyer who keeps taking selfies and takes far too much joy in his selfie stick expertise.

I loved this show--for all the reasons you mentioned. I liked that it went against type: the rich snotty boy, the dirt poor Cinderella girl. I liked all the characters and accepted all their flaws.

This is great @hotcocoagirl !

There were so many things that I really liked about this show. Without giving any spoilers, let's just say it's got a fantastic love triangle and, even though it tackles some serious subjects, it often is hysterically funny.

Towards the end, Kang-chul was by far my favourite character and that's after totally hating him in the first couple of episodes. Seulong did an amazing job and I thought he and his crush had awesome chemistry ;P

Very well put :-) It hadn't occurred to me that a defence was necessary; Ho-gu's Love is one of my all-time favourites. I had to roll my eyes at the Kang-chul/Ho-kyung storyline, because it was rather far-fetched and not particularly sensitive in execution. But Ho-gu is not a gullible fool; he is just an extremely kind person, and it is nice that for once we get to root for the complete opposite of the tsundere chaebol with (supposedly) a heart of gold; the payoff is the sweetest and most satisfying I can remember in ages.

Ps. check the opening scenes for a public service announcement on the dangers of the word "oppa"... :-))

I agree wholeheartedly with all your thoughts, especially about Hogu ~ it isn’t often in dramaland we get a genuinely kind person who still has flaws and has to work hard, and whose happy ending is the family they built around them through their sincerity ~~

I recently watched this and really loved it! Ho gu was such a wonderful character and so refreshingly not the Asshole Chaebol Who Slowly Warms Up!
It is a gem of a show and Ho Gu and Do Hee both made me care about them a lot.

I have an issue with how the show tackled the resolution of Kang Chul's confusion of sexuality but other than that, awesome!

I think it was lazy writing with Kang Chul, I thought at the beginning it might go somewhere, but then the writer/producer got scared and settled for cliches for their resolution.

I think it was awkwardness with the whole gay plot. The writer gave me the impression of not understanding how sexual orientation works, and being too uncomfortable to treat it with dignity. She should have taken her lessons from Coffee Prince.

Thanks for your eloquent defense of HOGU'S LOVE, @hotcocoagirl. I've seen positive references to it here on DB. I've wondered about the title, and am glad to know that I'm not the only one who gets the wrong idea from names that lose something in translation as well as synopses that don't scintillate.

HOGU sounds like a show I'd enjoy.

One question: I recently watched OJAKGYO BROTHERS, and got well and truly fed up with the heroine's deer-in-the-headlights look. Is that a thing of the past now?

Aw shucks, thanks for the compliment 😊

I have not watched Ojakgyo Brothers, but in Hogu’s Love the at first expressionless female lead’s face is later revealed to be from her feeling the need to hide her emotions. The woman is the blustery one hiding her feelings in this one, so at first you might think she looks like a deer in the headlights when Hogu does something unexpected.

If you haven't seen OJAKGYO BROTHERS, you might enjoy it. A lovely family drama with a great cast. Grandma seems to have run away from the Yang family in Jejudo in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL and adopted a new family. ;-)

Joo Won and Yeon Woo-jin play the two younger brothers, and UEE finds her way to the farm.

Here's another "Fool for Love" you might enjoy. It's one of my Kpop faves. The Nuts, with Queen In-Hyun's Man on lead guitar. ;-)

I think it was because of her character, but maybe she could've chosen different approach to her character lmao. But I've always loved Uee as an actress, except when she was in You're Beautiful (I hated her character, but she was meant to be hated so then Uee's acting was actually good.)

@pinktape,

Thanks for clearing that up. LOL! I wasn't sure if I could sit through umpteen more episodes of the look that actually reminded me of a wide-eyed, manic chipmunk for 58 episodes. I watched it over a period of 20 days back in September.

I marathoned YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL last August, but for some reason, Uee's character doesn't stick in my mind. I took a look at my log, and found my impressions (below). Yes, she registered in exactly the way you mentioned, and I recognized that she did a great job.

I started out as a sageuk watcher, so unless idols were cast in historical dramas, I've been oblivious to many of them until I started watching contemporary dramas. ;-)

@pinktape,

After the intensity of SEVEN DAY QUEEN, LOOKOUT, CIRCLE, DUEL, and having to bow out of watching CRIMINAL MINDS because of excessive violence, I needed a change of pace in August, 2017.

YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL is just what the doctor ordered. The OST is dandy, and there's great background music, too. The whole show is leavened with humor. One of the funniest scenes involves a feisty porker chasing city slicker Tae-kyeong across a pasture of tall grass in what I can only imagine is a sendup of the venerable horror flick, CHAW, or perhaps WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL. Instead of a rampaging wild boar (MONONOKE HIME, anyone?), it looks like a small but energetic Gloucester Old Spot. ROFLMAO!

I loved the show. This is my first time seeing YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, and I think it's held up well for a drama that was produced in 2009. I got the biggest kick out of the CGI fireworks playing around Mi-nam's head. They tickled me to pieces, and were well done. The pacing, character development, and story arcs unfold nicely. I marathoned it in 23 hours. Talk about addictive! I pretty much figured out all of the twists, but even so, for me, the action felt satisfying. The only twist that fooled me was the possible birth mother of the twins. I strongly syspected different parentage and a doozy of a birth secret -- which mercifully did not pass muster. It is an engaging watch. Of the musicians, F.T. Island's Lee Hong-ki as Jeremy is happily 4D, while CNBLUES's Jeong Yong-hwa as Shin-woo is the most even-keeled and down to earth. Jang Keun-suk is dynamite as the acerbic tsundere bandleader.

The cast is solid, with memorable characters brought to life with pizzaz and touching nuances. The main cast is a delight, with the band members nicely fleshed out and emotionally engaging. Kim In-kwon as band manager Ma Hoon-lee is terrific, as is Jeong Chan as President Ahn of the band's management company. Villainous pop singer Yu Hee-yi is a piece of work, and Uee succeeded in making me hate her guts while at the same time feeling her vulnerability -- and delusion, of which there was much. Sung Byoung-sook as Mother Superior isn't onscreen for long, but her portrayal reminded me very much of teachers I had in parochial school.

Park Shin-hye is the bee's knees as Sister Gemma aka Ko Mi-nam, who reminds me of the Singing Nun on steroids. Her performance is a tour de force. It floors me to think that she was 19-20 when she filmed the drama. Jang Keun-suk captivated me with his talented eyebrows and vocal intonation and modulation. Previously I'd only seen him in sageuk dramas HWANG JIN-YI and GREAT AMBITION / DAEMANG.

All in all, YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL is a well-produced romp. I found subtitles by Written In The Heavens Subbing Squad. They were a special treat. Now I'm going to have to check out HEARTSTRINGS for another music drama. ;-)

I LOVE You’re Beautiful, as you can probably guess from my username and pic. I tried to crowbar Pig Toki into my username but it looked weird... Oh yes, Fleeing From Pork is my favourite scene. 😂 UEE was fortunately a minor though annoying character.

Loved your review too and am thrilled that you marathoned it in a day! Heartstrings is nice but does not have the crazy energy of YB. I enjoyed the traditional music though.

Have you seen Flower Boy Next Door? Also with Park Shin Hye. If you like YB you might like this too.

@wishfultoki,

Glad you liked the review. I figured I had to put in a good word for UEE, who did yeoman service as a character you love to hate. The porker stole the show.

It's embarrassing to admit I went whole hog and binge-watched it in less than a day. OTOH, the music is cracktastic.

Speaking of rampaging piglets, I came across a clip from MY GIRLFRIEND IS A GUMIHO that included an encounter with a wild boar. It wasn't rampaging like the one in MONONOKE HIME, however. ;-)

I didn't realize that HEARTSTRINGS has traditional music. That makes it even more attractive to me. Gayageum, hageum, geomungo, pipa, erhu, samisen, koto, shakuhachi -- I love them all. And it's fine if it is more sedate. I can only take so much manic action. ;-)

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Enrique Keum in FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR as part of my DIY Yoon Si-yoon retrospective following THE BEST HIT (whose music I also loved to bits). He's so doggone cute in that panda suit. ;-)

@pakalanapikake
Whoa those are heavy dramas! I watched Duel and a bit of Circle, but I haven't watched Seven Day Queen!

I was obsessed with You're Beautiful as well, back when I was still junior high lol I watched it a long time ago. I doubt if I watch it again I will still like it though, I think it will feel cringey (but nostalgic) to me.

@pinktape,

It was precisely because I needed a break from live-watching dark and heavy dramas that I tuned in to YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL.

I was a deejay in college and afterwards, and decades later still keep an ear to the ground for good music. Beautiful OSTs tailored to the story are one of the things that grabbed me when I first started watching Kdramas. I especially liked YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL because of its rock music. I'm not a fan of rap, although MC Sniper's OSTs for fusion sageuks are an exception. I'd already made the acquaintance of rockers F.T. Island and CNBLUE thanks to a fellow Beanie. For me it was a blast to watch a drama with actors who are accomplished rockers. ;-)

You're absolutely right! Hogu's Love is a great drama. Most of the bad reactions to it were due to people expecting a light romcom and being put off from such a serious premise. I was already in love with Hogu's Love since its first few teasers were released. I knew it was going to be somehow quirky, but I knew I would love it. I was right. At first glance, Hogu might seem like a too-good-to-be-true character, but he was also realistic at the same time. I really agree with you. I remember him telling Hokyung that feelings (or heart?) are like paint tubes, they will dry out if we don't use them. That felt like a huge punch in the heart. He was right, he was completely right.

I really loved Dohee as a character too. Until now, she's still one of the strongest characters I've seen in a drama. However, my favorite character in Hogu's Love until this day is still Byun Kangchul. Man, I love that guy with all my heart.

I've been eyeing this one since BTLIOF ended and this post has me convinced I should give it a go!

The hero sounds like my type of hero. I'll never understand the male leads that are just complete jerks to the heroine. Am I supposed to be attracted to that? I tried rewatching/finishing Goong recently, which was my first ever kdrama, but I just couldn't do it. The male lead was such a jerk! I'm so over the flat-out mean drama "heroes".

Kindness and compassion are virtues! They should be celebrated! I'll be checking this one out soon. If BTLIOF is anything to go by, I'm sure I'll like the characters.

Guh, Hogu's Love is one of my all-time favourite kdramas ever. I love all your points and also can I just say I love Hogu's parents so much.

I love that Hogu is not the typical chaebol tsundere hero and he is innately good (one the Beanies point out about this about the hero in Strongest Deliveryman, and good kind hero is my weakness) and all the characters just living like the normal human being, with their struggles in life.

I love UEE as Do-hee and I was surprised when initially few commenters pointed out about UEE being too stiff in her character because I think the way she potrayed Do-hee was accurate, she built this wall because of the toxic people around her hence her coldness. I love the moment when UEE broke down sobbing because she thought she could no longer love someone after what happened to her, that is so heart-wrenching to watch.

The side characters too are perfect even with their flaws.

And I love the background music and OST of this drama.
