Jung Hae-in up to romance Sohn Ye-jin in Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food

This is a pairing I could get excited about. Sohn Ye-jin (Shark) has confirmed the starring role in PD Ahn Pan-seok’s new romance drama Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food, which she was first offered last October, and now the production is courting up-and-comer Jung Hae-in (Smart Prison Living, While You Were Sleeping) to play her leading man. Welp, this noona would buy you all the food you ever asked for, so I’d call it perfect casting.

The new JTBC series comes from star PD Ahn Pan-seok of critically acclaimed dramas Heard It Through the Grapevine, Secret Love Affair, A Wife’s Credentials, and more, and writer Kim Eun. It’s described very loosely as a drama about two acquaintances who fall in love and start a “true romance,” which is not a lot to go on, but I would expect a sensitive, introspective melodrama from this director.

Sohn Ye-jin has signed on to play a thirtysomething store supervisor of a coffee corporation. Her life motto is to just like what you like, except in reality she lives a rather hollow life without having accomplished what she wants to in work or in love. Jung Hae-in is up to play her love interest, and no other details have been released yet for his character. The actor is thirty, but I expect him to play younger, what with his baby face and all.

I’m really excited for the possibility of Jung Hae-in’s first leading role, because he’s been great in everything I’ve seen him in and getting a lot of attention as a scene-stealer in his two most recent projects, Smart Prison Living (where he plays inmate Devil Yoo Dae-hwi) and While You Were Sleeping (where he played the adorable Batman Cop). His other projects include Night Light, Blood, Three Musketeers, the movie The Age of Blood, and one star-making cameo in The Lonely Shining Goblin (as the Baseball Oppa that made Goblin green with envy). He’s got dramatic chops and is just coming out of a breakout year as a supporting actor, so I’m expecting good things, especially opposite an actress like Sohn Ye-jin.

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food is planning to air sometime this year on JTBC.

Oh. My. God.
I cannot even. So incredibly excited for this. Noona romance is my favorite sub-genre within a beloved genre, romance. Hahaha. Add to that this potential casting, and you can be damn certain that I will check this out.

Yeah. And Yoo Seung-ho can afford having a show under his belt with low ratings because he IS YSH and there's no doubt he'll get another drama. As for Dong Ha, he doesn't have that star power yet.

Also, I do hope Jung Hae-in signs in. I mean, Sohn Ye-jin has enough star power for the both of them! It shouldn't be as burdensome, maybe?

This is jTBC drama, while it might not be a hit, I don't think it will have a problem to get more than 2% at least. I'm pretty sure Jung Hae-in has confirmed, it is just the production haven't released the news yet. The media also seems to pay attention to these two pairing ever since it was announced -
so I guess the delay of the confirmation news is to create more buzz to this drama. Honestly, even a big name like Son Ye-jin wants to work with Director Ahn, what more with a rising star like him.

Jung Hae In trended at no 1 on Naver after Son Ye Jin confirmed to act in this drama. You can tell public is excited to see Jung Hae In in this drama and his popularity nowadays is no joke

There are no words to describe my excitement for this. Oh my god. Especially now when I’m on a bit of a noona romance high.

Welcome back to dramaland, Sohn Ye-jin! It’s been too long! So glad she’s doing a romance.

I’ve been loving Jung Hae-in lately but omg, I didn’t realize he was Baseball Oppa from Goblin! Mind blown. I only started noticing him in While You Were Sleeping and now Smart Prison Living.

Please be good, show!

I am so freaking happy!

Son Ye-jin cited that the main reason for her decision to make a drama comeback was because she had always wanted to work with Director Ahn.
I knew she'd make room for his drama and I am positive that this won't be a disappointment like "Shark."

I'm not that familiar with Jung Hae-in's work but I'm excited for him. This is a great opportunity for any growing actor and he'd be working with people known for the quality of their work.

If anyone in this industry who is known to handle sensitive/controversial issues with respect and dept it would be PD Ahn.

This drama will be worth waiting for!

I...might have ignored that article because I don't like the actress lololol. Jung Ha-yeon can do so much better! But Jung Ha-yeon!!

Have you seen any of the director's stuff?

2

I do have a soft spot for her since "Jumong." That historical Queen Soseono always gets me. It's rare to find a nation builder who was a woman back then in history so I envy those women who got to play her on screen. She was no Jung Ae-ri but she was the first for me.

Anyway, if Jung managed to make me love Park Si-yeon over the years I'm sure he'd work his magic with Han Hye-jin.
The big question is the director.
I heard good things about "Radiant Office" but I haven't seen it. Go Ah-sung is pretty good and doesn't need much direction to do her job so I don't know.

2

@kiara. I had a major girl crush on Soseono in Jumong, too (and that was the first long sageuk I ever watched <3). Then like a year or two later I went on to watch Jejoongwon, which the acting kind of ruined for me. She was definitely not the worst (Yeon Jung-hoon...smh), but I found her really stilted and difficult to watch.

I agree, though, Jung Ha-yeon has worked his magic on many people! Ham Eun-jung in Queen Insoo comes to mind as well. I guess I've been dreaming of him teaming up with so many of my favorite actresses without ever really thinking he'd return, that it's hard not to be disappointed that Han Hye-jin is the one he's ended up with now that he's miraculously back lol. I am sure I will get over it ;D

1

@juniper
Kim Kap-soo <3 did compensate and I enjoyed their father daughter relationship.
I like Park Yong-woo, he was in a lot of conventional sageuks but I wouldn't want to watch Yeon in this genre. Han Hye-jin was much better with Song Il-gook.

I know the feeling. Why can't he have Seo Ji-hye and Oh Man-seok?

I'm sad that he is writing for MBC and to make things worse, it's a wed/Thurs timeslot.
He was my drama special weekend guy. (Shin Don, La Dolce Vita, Flames of Desire time slot).

0

@kiara. Yeah, the MBC thing worries me, too. I think I'm just really nervous that this drama isn't his baby, if that makes any sense? Like, what if he's doing the script, but he didn't have any say in casting, didn't choose the concept, etc? I have no doubt he'll do an amazing job, regardless of how much power he has, but I want to see the drama he wants to make haha.

idk, now that I've processed the news a little bit, I am feeling less anxious on his behalf. If you look at most of his dramas, there were some question marks, and usually everything ended up being amazing, anyway. For instance, who would have thought the PD behind Personal Taste would go on to do such amazing things with Queen Insoo and Cruel Palace? And like you said, who would have thought that Park Si-yeon of all people would steal the show in La Dolce Vita?

And besides, I've enjoyed dramas that were only firing on one cylinder before lol. Nothing will ruin Jung Ha-yeon's writing for me!

1

@juniper
I am happy and worried at the same time.
I just feel like he is not with the right people.
I'd feel much better if this was a JTBC drama.
The cast are not actors he would pick imo. MBC can't give him PD Kim Jin-min any more because he went to TVN.

1

I hope the writers is good. I suffer so much already. Having to suffer watch my fav pd pairing with certain actor or the writers i don't know but at times it's end up dissapointing me abit. That drama is become a mess in the second half. It's like they switch the writers halfway. It's a pity since that drama has potential given the progress in the first half. And Kim Tae Hee is my fav part in the first half of drama.... and this drama is sageuk genre where not anyone can pull it off... Well I just dislike YAI voice. and he is too mechanical and intense at times when romantic scene involved it's appear the scene is just become cheesy instead of move me... LOL

1

LOL it is his voice that I love a lot. I followed his works from Sunkyunkwan Scandal. Probably because there are not many actors in his age group that I can relate to as well and he might be the best among them, don't know. Well I'm also not a fan of some actors that are worshipped by many fans and I even avoided few of them, so I can understand that feeling. LOL.

JOJ wanted to be re-adapted so much but still wanted to follow the history, so it ended up as quite a failure. Maybe they were also pressured by media or Koreans, I'm not sure. I mean no one also wants to see Yeonsangun's story to be re-adapted and too much sugar added to his story, that could be the case for Jang Hee-bin too.

0

Lol I guess I'm not the only one who doesn't worship the ground he walks on.
But I do like him, enough to give him a pass. I like him in movies more because film directors can train him well.

3

@goldenaddiction, you are also right, no minors in our dreams...
I don't know how is it with you, beanies, but when I see a beautiful baby like Nam Da reum, I don't like him as a "boysh/young man", that I know he will become, by the way, but I just feel like I would love to cook for him.
On the other hand young men usually over 20-something... they inspire the younger me, but it is not that I automatically produce any crazy fantasy... I just find them cute, and enjoy seeing them fall in love with their perfect cute counterparts.😂 Older adushis, which could inspire me more... hum😒... well I am picky. Kim Ji Suk in 20 Century boy and girl, I felt I could fall in love with him. 😍
So, in conclusion: we naturally would fall for a guy our age, but generally speaking we can like them all!!! 😀😂😀😂😀
Let's enjoy the beauty party.
We don't have anything like that in the real life. Ha ha

3

omg @javinne, that's how I feel too with younger actors! That I want to feed them. But sometimes, someone arises that I have oppa feelings for who's younger and I FEEL SO CONFLICTED HAHAHA

3

LOL hahahaha I said this elsewhere as well - I think it's perfectly fine to have these crushes. After all, you can't control who you fall in love with. :D
But it's just that I feel really silly when I do have an Oppa crush, and said Oppa is much younger. Hahahaha

Thumbs up! Though I’ve only ever seen Sohn Ye Jin in Personal Tasre and Shark. Two dramas I absolutely loathed. The former, because her character and the writing was unbelievably ridiculous and silly; and the latter, because that drama was as boring as h*ll. I hear she has a flourishing film career and a great reputation as an actress, so I’m looking forward to this - let the third time be a charm for me, let the writing be good🤞🏾.

I’m more confident with Jung Hae-in’s performance and acting choices. I’ve liked all the dramas I’ve seen him in: Bride of the Century, The Three Musketeers, Blood and While You Were Sleeping have all been very interesting dramas.

But I am happy for Jung Hae In-He (adorable in that special episode of Wise Prison Living^^). I remember he said he was final contender for Taek role in Reply 1988 which went to Park Bo-gum. He must have been envious watching Park Bo-gum's rise after the show. Now his turn to shine, maybe?

I am on board! Noona romances are one of my favorites! I would imagine as well that he is playing younger - as two early/mid 30 somethings doesn't feel very noona-ie.

I remember when watching WYWS and being so (pleasantly) surprised to find out his age!

I am so excited about this. He was super cute in While you were sleeping (that phone background of him and his crush's shadow leaning on each other. Awww). On top of that, it's a noona romance (which is my favorite genre EVER). Thank you JTBC.

Urgh! Why are ALL the good stuff in the genres I don't like😫😫😧
Sigh... first the medical drama from the FoS writer, now this...
Maybe this is a year to begin to embrace the genres I rather wouldn't ? *shrug
I'll just give it a go

Wow he's working non-stop. I discovered him in Prison Playbook (didn't really pay attention to him in Goblin) and he's just so adorable! He's probably the next Park Bo Gum. I'll definitely be looking out for his upcoming projects!

How come an older women with a younger man is cute, romantic and sexy but an older man with a younger woman is a thing not to endured and a reason to veto shows completely?? That doesn’t seem quite fair.

The younger women you refer to are all teenage actresses being paired up with actors in their mid-to-late twenties. If they were same-age actors and one was playing younger, OK...exploring more frowned upon relationships in storytelling is not unheard of and can get one thinking if done right (see: Secret Love Affair). Buuut there is a gross trend of taking young girls (and even some young boys like Yeo Jin Goo) and launching them straight into adult roles.

A Jung Hae In and Sohn Ye Jin pairing doesn't have to deal with that same criticism because both are adults. Remember, it's not the roles people are mad about (though sometimes it can be; see: Goblin), it's the real life people and implications of always casting adult roles for women young and younger.

If there are shows or movies that explore the relationship between an older man and younger woman in a thoughtful way (with two adult performers), I'd like to see it. But for now, I've only managed to see writers either infantilize the leading younger woman or over-sexualize her. So there can even be a problem in the roles as well. :/

I agreed with you.

Besides mostly of noona romance the story demands the actress be older, when it's the opposite it not necessary

Even, when both are adults, I confess that I also have a bit of prejudice due to the weight that this falls on the actresses and even in society.

Hum.. not sure about this. Maybe I don't have much drama experience, and I never watched Goblin, but... Prime minister and I, for example, except for the second half of the show being horrific and the end being lame, I liked it and the pairing didn't feel wrong. Same with UEE's marriage contract. Because not only the actresses were ok and also legally adults both in real life and in the drama, but also because it is a matter of circumstance and maturity. If the character is mature to be paired with an older men (thanks God they are usually still hot! 😂), then it is ok for me.
And in regard to noona romance, I have heard of some miscasts and even more horror stories, LOL. Let's see now what the noona buying food will bring to the table.

Like @canxi says, it's that the younger actress are minors and/or just over 20 i.e. too young. Whereas in a noona romance, the male is usually at least in his mid twenties i.e. both are adults.

I have no problem with My Ahjusshi for instance. A woman in her mid-twenties or older, and a man in his forties? That's cool. It gets creepy when the woman is too young.

Similarly, I have no issues with a TV show depecting say - a forbidden romance between a high school teacher and his high school student. It's not my cup of tea, but if the actors are all adults, it falls under free speech and expression in my book. Cast a minor, and I'll criticise regardless of which role - male or female - is the high schooler.

i like nuna romance. but is it only me? i think she might look lil old beside Jung Hae In becoz she definitely looked old beside Lee Min Ho in personal taste. I didnt like that drama much due to them looking little incompatible and story wasnt that good.

I think the drama will play on that insecurity of her looking older compared to him. Unlike older men/younger women dramas the looking older compared to your partner factor is usually treated as an obstacle that the female lead has to get over in noona romance and that's what makes it a bit different from normal romances

I really appreciated Secret Love Affair so if this is anything like that, I'm in. I'm not familiar with Jung Hae In besides the Baseball Oppa role so I'd be interested in checking out someone new. And of course I love Sohn Ye Jin. Would be so nice to see her back on the small screen.

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food is planning to air sometime this year on JTBC.

Hope sometime is soon enough, can't wait.

Scene stealer he is. I gasped at the moment he appeared in court in police uniform with his hair gelled up and a hat, I couldn't believe there is such exquisite looks. He makes Lee Jung Suk and Suzy look like ordinary people.
