Matching frequencies for Radio Romance’s first teaser

It’s all sweetness and light for Radio Romance’s first teaser, which was just released and features the series leads, Yoon Doo-joon (Let’s Eat 2) and Kim So-hyun (Ruler—Master of the Mask), in a romantic moment on the job. (Those K-drama workplaces, so bustling with romance; how do they ever get any work done?)

The teaser opens as Doo-joon grabs Kim So-hyun’s hand and smiles at her, and he says, “But still, you’re the prettiest.” Then as he places headphones on her head and leans in for a kiss, she asks the question that was posed by the opening words onscreen: “Is it true that if your frequencies match, you’ll meet your true love?”

I am trying (really trying! Very hard!) to be open to this romance, because there is no uncomfortable age gap in the storyline between a star radio DJ who can’t do anything off-script and the radio writer he falls for. It’s just my meta knowledge of the show casting a younger actress to play older, so if the show is cute and sweet and well-made, it shouldn’t matter… right?

I do find the character setup cute, where he needs a script in order to work, and she’s great at all aspects of her job except actually the writing part. Hee. Kim So-hyun’s junior writer character scrambles to survive in a radio station where one’s career lives or dies by ratings, and she’s the one who pursues Yoon Doo-joon, trying to bring him to her station, kicking off their bickering relationship.

Radio Romance will be KBS’s next Monday-Tuesday drama following Jugglers, and premieres on January 29.

As much as I really like Kim So-hyun, she just looks way too young - nevermind that she *is* very young. The visual squick value is high here.

Hmm… I don’t like her hair. I know the perm is to make her look more matured/old to match Doojoon, but... no. I don’t like the hair. I hope there will be a hairstyle change in the early episodes? Maybe like ep 2? Hahaha!

It will take some time to get used to the age gap, but I believe it will work since I loved Taecyeon & her in Bring It On, Ghost! Hwaiting!~

My love for Taecyeon helped me get over the squick factor in that show. He's on the huge side and they had a bit of a size gap, but I see Taec as an adorkable giant, so that helped too. This time, I don't have anything to go on. *sniff*

I am not that bothered with age gap because it isn't that obvious on screen (they look like they have Max. 5 years difference, at least in promo) plus, what K-dramas do really well is stay innocent as much as possible

I thought I could finally get through a drama with 17-18 year old KSH paired alongside a guy almost a decade older than her but I don't think it will be happening this time either.

She always looks her age to me (her acting never diminishes that) so I can't quite get into any of the romances and they made her look even younger in these trailers. It's calculated at this point and I'm personally not comfortable with it.

She looks young anyways and I don't think they succeeded in making her more mature. If anything, the curls are more Shirley Temple then anything. I think she looked older in Bring It On Ghost. Some young actors naturally look older, she is not one of them. She will most likely always be a baby faced beauty. I love both of them to death, so will check it out, but this show will need reaaaaaally good writing and directing to make me stay.

Its not even about the hair or her clothes. If the want to keep doing this large age gaps, then they should have the good sense to make the younger characters more mature with a hint of world weariness, not this wide-eyed , new-this-world, candy in romance shit! I know Kim So Hyun is beautiful, so I don't really care about her styling. They did the same thing with Kim Go Eun's character in Goblin.

My problem with thses age gaps is the younger ones are already at a little disadvantage in in respect of the relationship, but why, oh why do they have rub it in by making them bumbling, incompetent, extra childish and dependent on the older partner? Give them some badass qualities other than kindhearted, long-suffering and cute goodness( that often comes across as stupidity).
Just wanted to vent cause it's been on my, not spurred on by this drama in particular.

Because I adore Kim So Hyun and she's a very talented actress, I can hope for this drama. Is the curly hair and sweater intended to make her a look mature?
fail because she appeared younger to me. Her latest Marie Clarie photoshoot managed to made her look an established career woman, why not go for that style, show?

Is KSH trying to go with the nice girl image now? She has always been great on the devil character, but those characters are normally only 2nd lead, 1st lead is normally the puppy one. I hope she goes movie to show off her skill, doing one nice girl after another is not a good way to go. Shes more capable than that.

This is the problem that park shin hye faced almost her entire career. The non popular child actors and afford to wait out the transition years but the extremely popular ones can't since the public is waiting for them to take on adult roles almost immediately. For park shin hye playing younger roles actually made the transition harder for her and she complained about it too so I sympathize with why the current batch doesn't want to make the same mistake. Just jump straight into adult roles and let the rest flow.

Park Shinhye played characters that were much older than her age when she was Kim Sohyun's age. And in her interviews, she said she struggled. I think the younger roles like YAB actually did help ease her transition at that time.

I believe she, Kim Yoo-jung and Yeo Jin-gu can afford to be more selective, so I hope they will select good projects - not just the character. She was promised a good and interesting role in Ruler, and all of us thought the same too, but it ended up as a lackluster - her character and the drama itself (well same goes to YJG in Reunited Worlds).

If we based on publicly known acting works, i guess KSH's management is solidifying her transition by accepting most of the roles offered to her. In a way its media-savvy smart since at their age and stage of their careers, whether a drama does well (then it would benefit them) or was below expectation, audiences would still be lenient towards them and would hurt their potentials less than if an older actress keeps on making wrong drama choices. YjG, I thought was also following this pattern, but with him declining Great Temptation, maybe they are now being careful. As for KYJ, she seems to be more selective as we mostly hear offers and less of confirmation from her.

Yoo-jung isn't planning to move to Hollywood. The HBO offer is for a horror anthology series featuring ghost stories from six Asian countries, and she's up to lead the Korean episode. She hasn't accepted offers in the past year because of school, but it seems she's close to confirming that cleaning drama. I do hope she takes this HBO offer. It's only an hour-long episode so she can do both projects.

2

She's 18 so I could have possibly handled the age gap, but for some reason they've styled her to look more 16 than any of her most recent roles. Which is just such an odd and disconcerting choice. I'm sure she could have pulled off at least 20 with the right look.

THIS.

I don't know why people are being so defensive in the comments section. We're not saying Kim So-hyun is the problem. It's the stylist/PD! They made her look younger than her 18/19 years. AND they're adding all these twinkly teen effects. If I'm a KSH fan, I'd be mad at whoever is handling this and giving my bias things she'll have to work hard to make up for with acting.

This is the youngest-looking KSH role I've seen her in. I'm wishing this is one of those cases where the style in the teasers is much different from what they look like in the show.

Don't know if I could be interested in this drama. 😒
On the other hand, wouldn't be nice to have a story of a couple falling in love through the radio but one being the DJ or whatever and the other one being a listener? (Maybe one who would call on the phone once in a while?) It may be interesting to have a romance between people who haven't seen one another, at least at the beginning, but feel inspired by each other's words.
Man!! I wish I could be a script writer who would write this kind of story!
Maybe I will make it into a short story written for myself. 🤓

That will make a nice read. I LOLed at the "I'm so smart" because I say this to myself whenever I have an idea that I think is cool and so 'smart' and out of this world. Most times it turns out that someone else also came up with the very same thing. That is to say I also thought of a drama in which a DJ/On air personality and a listener falls in love, they share music tastes, books, movies, suffered similarly huge loss in their lives... It will make a nice melodrama tho and "I'm so smart" 😉😂

I really want to give this drama a try because I love both KSH and YDJ's acting. Like many others in the comments, the "trying to make KSH look older" thing isn't really working and I don't know this is going to play out. The fact that the irl age gap is 10 years doesn't help this matter any more and it just feels like YDJ has a younger sister. I guess it's more of the thing where if it's portrayed well, it should work for the most part.

On the contrary, I love her hair 😅 But the fact she is a career woman with several years experences is not working for me. It would've been better if she is just an intern. Kim So-hyun is one amazing young actress, so I hope her transition from child to adult actress will be smooth. These two might look good together despite of big age gap, you know Kim So-eun probably one of the perfect examples for big age gap difference with her co-stars -Ji Jin-hee (not a romantic relationship but she had a crush on him lol), Ryu-jin, and Kim Ji-han- and she was also just 20,21 y.o that time 😅 It was odd at first, but it was slowly grew on me! So kinda optimistic with this one, as long as the drama is good, I think the rest can work well.

Kim So-hyun is good, but looks like a huge miscast. I thought it'll be okay because LFG wasn't bad at all. Her chemistry with Taec was actually quite sweet and adorable. But her it looks all sorts of wrong. He looks like a predator instead of a romantic interest and that makes me sooo uncomfortable. I honestly liked Ruler and wasn't too bummed about it despite its flaws, so I'm not in a hurry to erase that. KSH however, really needs to pick better dramas.

I liked her with Taec in LFG. Yes, she was a high-schooler but she was feisty and that really worked (plus she'd been in a coma for 10 years). I could just about buy him as a college student, so the visual ick facter wasn't high. In this trailer she not only looks really really young but she plays it cutesy which makes it much worse.

Another worry about the visuals from this drama, most of the supporting casts looks visually mature unlike in Ruler where if we just look at their faces, they look more or less closer in age. Here, characters are supposed to be closer in age, but actors' visuals doesn't support that or rather KSH stands out as being the youngest age and visuals.

I love both the leads, but I feel so weird about this pairing with Kim So-hyun being so young. She should still be doing high school or even college, but honestly even a fresh grad would feel a bit old for her I think. And it's different from when they cast Yoon Shi-yoon with Kim Sae-ron for Mirror of the Witch, because unlike that drama, this focus of this story is the romance. I'll check it out because I love these two a lot and hope they manage to convince me.

Although I didn't like the pairing in Mirror Of The Witch KSR was 16 at that time and YSY was 30 but i could turn a blind eye because it's historical, in the old days they would marry of the girls young like 14 so i could digest it a bit.

Exactly! That pairing was still uncomfortable even with the sageuk setting. They did execute the pairing passably considering, there was other parts of the story to take away from that and portrayed it as a different kind of love almost, I don't think it was too too romantic so that it becomes really uncomfortable. I really can't imagine how they'll do that here.

If she keeps doing high school roles she'll get typecast. I don't think I can wait till she reaches her mid 20s to see her take on adult roles. Lee Seo Won already played a doctor in Hospital Ship and Kwak Dong Yeon is playing a psychiatrist over here. They are both only 2 years older than her.

There are people who will always infantilize Kim So Hyun. For these people she will always be a child.

I'm worried for Doojoon who will be seen as a a child abuser. (sarcasm)

Kim So Hyun and her agency should never have accepted this role. She does not fit the role.
She does not look like the character should look and she can not act that well to play characters who are older than her real age. The stylists of the show can't even make her look older and pretty.

I'm not worried about the kiss scenes because I'm certain the kisses will be sweet and mild. This drama do not look like the kind that will have real hot passionate kisses at all.

There are people completely ignoring the fact that South Korean actress can really do an entire drama with 16+ episodes without doing any hot passionate kisses. There are countless examples in 2017 and too many more in the last 10 years.

I'm also flabbergasted at seeing so many people who can't see a girl who is 19 years old kissing a man. Seriously. These people would heave a heart attack and die after watching what teenagers in real life do. Teenagers in real life do so much more and further than just kissing. S**.

One thing about Ruler is that it showed KSH's acting weaknesses, I guess her age and life experiences is still not enough for her to elevate a poorly written character nor infused charm into a dull one. If we based on the teaser, the visual disparity is really evident and Kim So Hyun does not look, sound and act convincing as a 25 year old radio writer, hence the worry since this type of drama is heavily dependent on leads chemistry (visually, acting and character). As for her agency and her accepting, I think she's still at that stage of her career where she accepts majority of offered roles and she works hard and avoid void period.

5

Required fields are marked *

Ruler did not show any acting holes for Kim So Hyun because she has none. Koreans are proof of that because they were raving about her acting skills and it was only the character that was flawed. Kim So Hyun is a brilliant actress with no acting holes and is one of the most beloved actresses in Korea. Ruler was a hit only because of the insane chemistry of the leads and when MBC skipped on giving a couple award they received a lot of flak from the Korean audiences. No one could have elevated the character in Ruler not even Jeon Deo Yeon. Kim So Hyun is like Lee Jong Suk when it comes to work. They are workaholics and hate quiet periods. It's better work hard when young because the older you get the less roles you get.

I just think that all actors and actresses would have acting holes/weaknesses at one point or another, I guess the level and at what stage of their career it would be differs for each of them. Some would underact or have exaggerated acting, some would their intonations or voice, some with their eye acting, or even some looks too conscious/trying to still look pretty/cool, and others are technically good but not yet at the level to elevate a weak or dull character in paper. Even veteran actors and actresses have acting holes in the span of their long careers, but most have the foresight and openness to work on some weaknesses. Actually most of the known teen actors/actresses are technically good, but still lacks that 2% to infuse charm into a dull character or make a character you'd hate on paper but portrayal evokes borderline emotions. Park Boyoung and Kim Woobin are some young actors that I can think off.

I'm a huge fan of her, but let's not make it like her acting is Cannes-level. It is possible that she has an acting-hole (I think it's romance because she said it herself that she can't quite immerse in romantic roles because of the lack of real-life experience). Also, she hates aegyo that's why she has a hard time doing cutesy stuff. I applaud her for taking this role and challenging herself knowing full-well that she's not as good in romcom as she is in playing badass characters.

I'm sure KSH has acting weaknesses, but I'm not sure if Ruler was a good example of them. There is a limit to how much you can elevate the script, especially if the writer and director have specific visions about how things should be depicted. It depends on how open they are to new ideas and whether you're brave and powerful enough to challenge them if they're not open to ideas. I don't know anything about the writer. The Ruler directors did all MBC dramas and MBC is considered the most stodgy of broadcast stations.

Even though I wish she wouldn't take on older roles until she hits 20, you're right that she is at that stage in her career. It's fair that she wants to prove her success as a leading lady. And there just aren't many lead or even second lead roles written about 18-22 year olds.

It's a Korean Drama with Korean actors. The world may or mayn't watch Korean drama bt Korean will always watch. The rest of the world is unimportant.

We're talking about age here not the audience or who's gonna watch.

I rather this response than when people were too hyped for Ruler and that became a dud. This is a much better character for KSH than her last drama and she seems genuinely happy to film this drama which is basically what I wanted for her. Ruler made her go into depression so as long as she finds happiness through this drama I don't even care. Plus YDJ treats her like a total princess so I'm sold on their real life chemistry.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that she got depression while filming Ruler. More of like she fell into an acting slump, which I remember she admitted/disclosed in one of her interviews after Ruler. Depression is heavier imo. Anyway, I'm okay with this combo plus the reaction for the two are pretty positive in the knetz world. However, I'm not really getting my hopes up just yet because the writer is new and the director doesn't have any strong dramas under his belt. Though I'll still watch it purely for KSH, YDJ, and KDY lol

I honestly don't know how to react to age-gaps anymore. I wasn't digging her with Taec on LFG and, surprisingly, I actually ended up enjoying that drama a lot, but Taec doesn't look his age, so there's that. YDJ doesn't look his age either lmao, he looks like he's in his mid-thirties which doesn't really help with how young KSH is. I know it is uncomfortable to see her portray these roles of 'career women' when she hasn't reached that age yet, but I feel like for her to actually look like the 'woman' so many of us may want, she would have to skip acting for at least 3 years, ,and I don't think that's a good idea for her, not now at least. Now, they could had chosen an actress older than KSH, why they didn't, IDK. I did read somewhere this drama has some staff members from LFG, so maaaaaybe, they were the ones who thought she was right for the role. I have the hopes the drama will be different that was is shown is this bubbly teaser, and they looked cute to me in the KBS drama awards, so who knows, they might sell this one.

Aw, man. I’ve been wary about this pairing since Day 1, but having the visuals to support this idea just really hits the uneasiness home. I have been waiting for Yoon Doo-joon’s drama comeback for ages, and there is no way I will not watch this, but the painfully obvious and squicky age gap will be hanging over my head the whole time. Also, I’ll just imagine and replace Kim Sohyun’s face with Kim Seulgi’s, they have the same height and build anyway. #the KIM we all want

How about you just don't watch the drama. It'll be much easier. Besides Kim Seul Gi will never be a big star like her because she doesn't have the it factor.

Although she isn't among the big names, I believe Kim Seul-gi is famous enough as a comedian in Korea, so don't be so sure about she will never be a big star, because you never know what will happen to anyone. Someone who is at the top today might hit the rock bottom tomorrow.

She's not even that popular as a comedian. I mean when you have Park Na Rae then who need Kim Seul whatever. If Real and the rape scandal didn't kill Kim Soo Hyun and Park Shi Hoo career then I doubt big stars in Korea have anything to worry about. Even Song Hye Kyo survived a tax evasion scandal and we all know how seriously Korea takes tax payment.

It's bad when I ended up cringing and whispering "don't kiss don't kiss" when they're about too, right?

I actually liked the cute and fluffy teaser (I like fluff!) but yeah, that happened.

They looked way better in KBS Drama Awards. KSH looked mature and "grown-up" there. I hate the perm. It makes her look baby-ish than they intended. But who knows, it might grow on me. HAHAHAH!

I'm excited for this. I know that her character will be a "nice" girl, but please KBS, don't make her a pathetic one. Please make her a character like Yoon Jiho--nice and quiet but strong-willed, won't let anyone trample on her dignity.

I agree with how the perm makes her look younger. I thought she looked older in WYWS with the darker hair. Even though I'm not too comfortable with the pairing, I hope she has more freedom in this role than she did in her ruler role and that she has fun.

No. I was shout-whispering in my mind at Doojoon's character to step away from her. What a pity. Pass. Bad teaser. Not for my ahjumma state of mind.

hrmmm...she looks way too young. the hairstyle doesn't help. in my opinion, She would look more mature with straight hair, like one she donned in While You Were Sleeping.

I don't like the age disparity of the main leads. I wished an actress in her mid 20s -early 30s would had been casted instead 😕

Woaaahhh woaaahhh!!! I'm rooting for this! 😂 even though the trailer was too girly for me, I'm hoping that this show will be good. I'm also not bothered by the age gap HAHAHA idk why XD I watched Yoon Doo-joon in Splash Splash Love and he was really hilarious and his acting skills there was on point! I missed seeing him as a king like that in the show though hahaha! but I'm hoping this will go well. Not a fan of Kim Soo-hyun believe in her great acting but we'll see. :)

Seems miscast. I’m sure the corporate suits thought, “ KSH + ? = profit ! “. It sounds like a run of the mill rommance vehicle that any 20 something actresses should have been in contention for.

I suspect KSH may have to suffer through other poorly suited productions as the suits will try to squeeze every penny they can from her “star” status.

There isn't much choice for 20 year old actresses. They just cast Joy for great seducer. It's either former child stars or idols. These days rookie actors don't get good reviews either. Just Between Lovers is dying in ratings and only Junho is holding it up with his star power. Besides KSH isn't a ratings guarantee yet and I don't think fluff dramas like this will ever do well in numbers.

I wonder why Kim So-Hyun's face looked so round? Has she put on weight on purpose or is she bloated for other reasons? Anyway, this and her curly hairstyle don't help a bit in making her look more mature. She still just looks like a normal pretty teenager, and not at all convincing as a junior writer in a radio station. Nevertheless, I like both of the leads so I hope the show will turn out OK.

Man I don't know about this show. I usually don't mind a ten year old difference but only if the actor/actress was at least in their mid-late twenties or older. I mean she just barely turned legal and they are already pairing her with actors who are ten years her senior. No doubt she will do a great job, she is a great actress, but her company is rushing things, I personally don't think this is the way to go.

See, if the production styled her like this, then maybe, we would not have such a knee-jerk reaction.

I agree. The perm they've given her is adorable but it makes her look younger. If Kim Sae-ron managed to pull off a role six years older than her, Kim So-hyun can manage.

Kim SoHyun is a beautiful and brilliant actress and though the styling for this show does not help her I'm still going to watch this show just for her. I just want to see her play in a fun romcom again and since I like Dujun and the age gap doesn't really bother me I'm happy with the overall set up of the show. The teasers are just what I wanted for this show light and colorful. None of it is actual cuts from the show though so I'm waiting for that. I think everyone's comments on this forum is justified but I don't understand comment about replacing the actress. I get you want to see him with someonelse but stop being disrespectful for her cast. While last time I agree she was pushed into the role but this time I'm 100% sure that Kim SoHyun handpicked this role for herself. I bet she had a lot more offers but knowing her real life personality I'm not surprised she picked this role. She had stated very clearly that she wanted to do romcom when she turns 20 which she has and she also wants to do heart warming and healing dramas which is what this is. This is her choice and I respect her for it. Plus this is her first proper romcom so try and be more supportive.

Just looking at the poster, she really looks like a middle schooler... I think her looks will forever remain as a CHILD ACTRESS only.. it will be hard to accept her as an adult..... Unlike her "batchmates" Kim Yoo Jung and Nam Ji Hyun, they were already have the looks on an adults... The actions/gestures, body, figure & cleavage... lol.... Sometimes I noticed her eyes somewhat "cross eyed"??.... oh well she needs a lot of effort to be upgraded and get out as a child actress treatment...

Am I the only one not liking Kim So Hyun? And I don't mean her looks in this particular drama but her as an actress in general. Everywhere I look, I only see immense praise for her. I really tried watching dramas with her, but I just can't warm up to her. Really wondering if I'm the only one like this.

I have similar sentiment, I also don't like her as actress. I never finish any drama with her in it. Imo, her acting is not that different from idol/actor.

No you aren't lol. I don't dislike her acting, but I don't get the huge praise heaped on her because her acting isn't that different from other actresses I watched. I guess its a matter of preference.

Her acting is ok, she hasn't scored any great project or character to get real recognition. But believe me, she will be casted in BIG projects in future with that face, sooooo pretty, textbook of Korean beauty standard for actress (ppl call her little Son Yejin for a reason)

I think she already got recognition in School 2015. It was the drama that catapulted her to Hallyu stardom (of course, the drama wasn't a hit in Korea, but she shot to fame internationally). It was also the drama where many people acknowledged her acting when she played Go Eunbyul. It's just that she still hasn't had a hit drama both domestically and internationally and her character in Ruler didn't do her justice. But she's young and she has a lot of time to grow and improve herself. I have no doubt that she will be big one day.

Have you seen Page Turner? That's only 2-3 episodes. And also the first 4 episodes of Missing You. I would say those are better examples of her acting chops. She's also still in her teens and hasn't had many lead roles yet. So idk, what's your standard of a good actress that just turned 19?

The age gap between them is big and it's noticeable because both of them look their age. Kim So Hyun's acting is really good but I don't know if any romance chemistry will come out between their characters. They look more like siblings.
