Song Jae-rim offered lead opposite Kim Yoo-jung in First, Clean Passionately

This could be a cute pairing: Song Jae-rim (Our Gap-soon) has been offered a lead role in JTBC’s webtoon-adapted drama First, Clean Passionately, a romantic comedy that has already secured Kim Yoo-jung (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) to headline.

The drama setup is basic—the hero runs a cleaning company, the heroine works for it—but I’m looking forward to this drama with anticipation because I love the character descriptions. Kim Yoo-jung will play Gil Oh-sol, an energetic and “fourth-dimensional” (weird) young woman for whom “subsistence is more important than cleanliness.” Oh-sol is working hard to find her entry into the workforce and does part-time work in the meantime, and has no time for dating and cultivating tidy habits; her tracksuits always have holes in the knees and her sense of hygiene is a bit fat zero.

Naturally, our leading man is the opposite: The character Jang Sun-gyul is the owner of the cleaning company for whom cleanliness is more important than anything else. He’s a complete germophobe, and when the grubby Oh-sol takes up a job working at his company, we kick off a “human reform project”—presumably to clean her up, although I wouldn’t mind if we rumpled him up a bit in the process, either. Song’s character is apparently a new one, but is described as a leading role.

I do love his appealing oddball air and deadpan reactions that would work well with this kind of rom-com. The drama comes from director Noh Jong-chan of Cruel Palace and Queen Dowager Insoo, and is written by and Joseon Gunman’s Han Hee-jung. The drama premieres in April.

Exactly. Couldn’t they find any actor closer to KYJ’s age? I mean, come on. KYJ is barely 19 and she’s already set to play the love interest of an almost 20 years older male actor.

Song Jaerim is not up for the male lead role. He was offered a role that was not in the webtoon, hence not the male lead. Ahn Hyoseop just confirmed that he will be taking on the role of the male lead. He's a '95er so he'll be just 4 years older than Yoojung. Btw, Song Jaerim was born in 1985. Technically, he's 14 years older, not 20.

Also, we do not even know if Jaerim's role gonna form a love line with Yoojung's just because he's offered a role in the drama. He can be her big bro in the drama for all we know.

Well technically in Korean age, she's considered as 20 yrs old which is the legal adult age there ^^;;

My biggest issue is the fact that she's *just* barely legal. That skeeves me out for so many reasons. If she was already an adult for a reasonable amount of time, I might be able to get over it. I had no problem liking Kim Go-eun and Gong Yoo being paired together even though there was a huge age gap between them, because Kim Go-eun was already an adult for a while before being cast in Goblin. I wasn't too weirded out by Kim So-hyun and Yoo Seung-ho's pairing either, even though I was a bit put off by their passionate kiss scene, because Yoo Seung-ho is only 23 (22 at the time Ruler was airing). This entire situation gives me the chills, I don't like it one bit. If they're going to cast Song Jae-rim and supposedly Ahn Hyo-seop, they might as well go all out and cast a lesser known actress instead of trying to use Kim Yoo-jung's star power in the first place. And before anyone says Kim Yoo-jung knew what she was doing when she accepted the role, I'm going to say if the director had any sense, he wouldn't offer her the role in the first place.

I don't know why people keep discouraging Kim Yoojung from taking on projects. What is she supposed to do then?
I understood when it was School 2017 since it was apparently for newbies; but this is a legit project. If they offered it to a newbie actress, it would flop like Just Between Lovers did despite being a stellar production in both script and acting.

Just Between Lovers is a JTBC drama, which never get particularly high ratings anyway, and it's in a brand new time slot that JTBC just created. It's not because of the actress that it hasn't done well.

2

I'm not saying it's the actress's fault. I'm just saying some productions tend to be overtaken because of the lack of star power despite the quality. If they pair Ahn Hyo-seop with a rookie actress like what the above user suggested, then the situation will happen. PDs won't want that.

The female role's age in the webtoon is 20. Yoojung is 20. She fits. The role was offered to her 3 months ago, and it was only a week or so ago when news about Ahn Hyoseop being offered the male lead role surfaced. That shows that the casting director is set on casting Yoojung and an actor closer to her age (in this case, 4 years older). It was only in this Song Jaerim article that the age gap concerns popped up once again (apart from the Yoojung article a while back where people were prematurely bringing up these concerns with no knowledge at all of the age of the male lead). We do not even have the character description of Song Jaerim's role and his relationship to the female and male lead characters yet as his role was not included in the webtoon. I think it's best to wait for that before passing judgement because we may be worried over nothing. Also, Song Jaerim hasn't accepted the offer but Hyoseop already confirmed on taking the male lead role.

Why shouldn't they use Yoo-jung's starpower to boost the drama though? Should famous young actresses like the three Kims not be paired with rookies? Yoo-jung is the right age for the character so why shouldn't she have been offered the role?

Ahn Hyo-seop has confirmed the male lead role and he's only four years older than Yoo-jung. So far he's the only one confirmed to have a loveline with her. We know virtually nothing about Song Jae-rim's role except he's not in the webtoon. For all we know, he's only there as a guest star.

Yoo Seung Ho is not that much older than Kim So hyun, within a 5 yr gap is still ok and YSH looks 20. Taecyeon was able to pull it off with KSH in Let's Fight Ghost, only coz he is goofy so the age gap didn't show much. Now, KSH's new drama Radio Romance is with another older guy, so why, right? Can't a younger guy play that role? Or they don't care about age gap in korea as long as both leads are popular. I'd say the latter and nothin' we can do about it, just gripe. And wish, wish that next time KSH will be paired with Yook Sung Jae, yap, I'll wait. That better happen before I die, haha. Ahn Hyo Seop? Another Nam Ji Hyuk in the making but not really liking him much.

I read an article on Soompi, and while saw that Song Jae-rim's character was not originally in the show, it doesn't say anything about Ahn Hyo-seop being cast as the main lead. If true, that's a casting I could get behind as he's a 95er and with Yoo-jung only being a 03er, the age gap is not as eyebrow-raising as one with SJR who's a whopping 18 years older.

It seems like there will be a love triangle between these three. Ahn Yeo-seop is age appropriate and pretty but he is so wooden. Song Jae-rim on the other hand, seems fit for the male lead role, but the age gap is big and Kim Yoo-jung is barely 20 y.o and netizens already made fuss about the pairing.

Since she confirmed to do this, I wish her all the best. She probably has to carry the weight of this drama.

He was wooden on FIS indeed and he didn't exactly have a sizzling chemistry with Ryu Soo-Young, but it may have been his first serious acting gig, if my memory's not mistaken. After all he initially trained at JYPE to be a singer. So he still has room for improvement and he may gradually softens over shooting episodes with "veteran" Kim Yoo-Jung. He's probably going to call her "Sunbae" despite him being older and her young age, which is fun to imagine.^o^

You're probably right about FIS was his first serious acting gig, his prior drama were all webdrama as I recall. But because of his wooden-ness even in a supporting role, he should do more supporting roles imo. I don't mind rookie actors for lead roles, if they are good. Anyway he is still considering, but between these three actors, Kim Yoo-jung is definitely a sunbae and superior in acting despite of her being the youngest.

I agree with you that I would rather have him improved as a supporting role in various dramas and gain experience before landing the main male role. Yet I would favor him over the Rim, not that I hold anything against @mary's fiancé, but due to her age. Natalie Portman recently opened up about experiencing "environment of sexual terrorism" after starring in "Léon" at 13. I could not help but notice the same type of comments about Kim Yoo-Jung and other child actresses. It maybe not as sexualized onscreen because of stronger censorship in SK but subtly enough to satisfy some older men's perverted minds, whom what I refer to as "having Pygmalion's syndrom", such as those bidding hundreds of dollars to get underaged Jeon Somi's taekwondo uniform. This is so creepy yet people have become so used to it that they see nothing wrong to it.

*sigh* he's still in his early 20's so that's better /age-wise/ but he's...not a very good actor. it woulda been nicer if they got kim min jae or someone around his age and equally talented. it's hard cuz kim yoo jung is SO young (which is why she shouldnt be getting leading roles in romances but w/e, spilled milk) so that narrows the pool of male lead options for her. but that aside she's going to act circles around hyo seop and it will look awkward af (tho at least wont make my skin crawl? so...yay?).
it'll be nice to see song jae rim again tho, hopefully they give him a fun character to play and there's NO love triangle (cuz he's in his 30's. please no).
Anyway, at least i will try it out with v low expectations. (unlike radio romance which i wont touch with a 10 foot pole despite liking both leads, just NOT TOGETHER ugh)

There are no youth dramas being produced this year. The trend this year is apparently "healing" dramas/melodramas; and of course, legal dramas.

In any given year, there aren't enough youth dramas to accommodate 3 young actresses of their caliber and to not give off the vibe that they're competing against each other. Finding leading men around their age is also difficult. Yeo Jin Gu can't be in everything. There are a handful of good ones, but they're still pretty inexperienced. And few, if any, people have Shin Won Ho's eye for matching relative unknowns to the perfect roles.

I think we're going to have to get used to the age imbalance until the three Kims get old enough for it to look less jarring.

or...here's an idea. they dont cast them in lead roles in /romance/ dramas? unless they find an age appropriate male lead. it's not That hard at all. like ur telling me u cant find an actress in her 20's to play opposite a guy in his 20's or 30s? like did all the actresses age 21-34 just vanish from south korea? no they did not. so this is ridiculous. i hope netizens complain loudly and often enough that studios STOP doing this cuz im rly im tired. i want to watch my faves in good dramas not avoid them cuz it makes me feel ill. i cant believe we went from kim so hyun/yoo seung ho pairing in Ruler which was alrdy very awkward cuz she's still a minor and he's 9 yrs older (but he's still only 23 so at least..there's that) to having her star opposite DOOJOON who is in his almost in his 30s now. i just...Whyyyyyyy (there's no talented actresses in their 20s to play the role in radio romance? not a SINGLE one? REALLY?)

Yeah age wise Yoojung is perfect for Oh Sul since she is 20 in Korean age. And AHS is actually perfect for San Gyul age wise as well since he is 23 in Korean age (22 international age). Those are the ages of the main characters. But what confuses me is Song Jae Rim's character since it's new and isn't on the webtoon. We don't know what his character will be. He is way older than the 2 leads though so my guess is that he isn't a love triangle.

We need more college dramas like "Age of Youth."These girls are not in high school any more and there are plenty of young actors in their early 20s with experience to be their leading men.
Dramaland's obsession with idols and CF princes doesn't give young talents and more promising actors like Park Gun-tae (21), Park Ji-bin (22), Kwak Dong-yeon (20), Seo Young-joo (19) etc much of a chance. They are still playing small and supporting roles.
They may not be at Yeo Jin-goo's caliber but they are 100 times better than these newbies.

I think Shim Eun-kyung made a good choice to stick with films during her transition years.
I hope Kim Hyang-gi will continue doing films too. She can always do dramas later.
Kim Sae-ron has always done better in films too.
I don't mind Yoo-jung and So Hyun doing dramas non stop. They pretty much can carry a drama on their own and they can afford to bounce back from a crappy drama every once in a while.

I'm surprised Kwak Dong-yeon hasn't graduated to even second lead level after Moonlight. He's still stuck in supporting roles, which is a bummer since he's such a talented young actor. His agency mate and Moonlight co-star Jung Hye-sung has since leaped to second and main lead roles, but he seems to have fallen behind.

He's charming and had chemistry with Yoo-jung in Moonlight.
I like that he is not a baby face. He looks like he is in his mid 20s which could work with this drama.

If I have to choose I'd pick from the mid to late 20s based on the character.
Noh Young-hak (24) is pretty awesome and this could have been a great reunion with Lee Min-ho (24).

I just want both Kim Yoo-jung & Kim So-hyun to just happily shooting their romcoms without so many burden regardless who is their partner. I'm surprised that the writers and the industry haven't been working on writing more youth dramas or dramas without strong romances in anticipation of KSR, KYJ, and KSH hitting the awkward 18-22 age and looking for leading roles that don't involve wearing a school uniform, but too young to comfortably match up to the actors they'd want to feature.

I'd love it if Seo Youngjoo gets a break and gets casted alongside Yoojung. I loved them in Golden Rainbow. And I've always adored Guntae too (Galchi!!!!). I wonder where he is. Guntae was actually quite famous as a child actor. His fame's quite close to Yeo Jingoo's and Yeo Seungho's when they were young, right? I've always thought before that he's gonna be able to build his resume and snatch lead roles with Yeo Jingoo when they get older, but sadly, he kinda disappeared. I think the last time I saw him was in Orange Marmalade. At least, even with not much success, we see Lee Hyunwoo on our screens and we know what he is up to at the moment (military), but Guntae is nowhere to be found. *sigh*

Seo Young-joo is amazing in films when he is given more to do.
I would love to see him and Kim Sae-ron headline a film. He played a small part as her brother in "Snowy Road" and I've always wanted to see them together in another film.

I started watching K-drama back in the days when sageuks were pretty epic and popular.
I love all the child actors who were raised in this genre.
Moon Geun-young, Kim Yoo-jung, Yeo Jin-goo, Jin Ji-hee, Noh Young-hak, Park Gun-tae , Park Ji-bin, Lee David, Lee Min-ho (93), Lee Hyun-woo, Shim Eun-kyung, Park Eun-bin, Yoo Seung-ho, Nam Ji-hyun, Kim So-hyun, Seo Shin-ae, Chae Sang-woo etc.

Gun-tae is probably on the same boat with the rest of the other child actors. Juggling school and work (small role or cameo here and there or sticking mostly to films).
I'd love to see him back with Jin Ji-hee. I really miss Jin-hee a lot.

I think everyone who have seen "King Sejong" fell in love with Lee Hyun-woo. He was really good!
I also love Nam Ji-hyun in it too.
They were so good together and as adorable as Kim Yoo-jung and Yeo Jin-goo in "Iljimae."

Most have grown up well as expected. Hopefully some of those who are MIA will return after college.

Actually I think look wise Jisoo is actually more perfect for the male lead role. Since Jisoo have this cold and serious look and aura around him like the male lead character. I think it might work. He could be a little mean and misunderstood again just like in Angry Mom and then slowly show Sun Gyul soft and funny side. And come to think of it this could be his and Yoojung reunion after Angry Mom. If he is available they should try to cast. He never have male lead role yet.

The hero is ahn yeo seop, a newcomer with age gap 4 years with the heroine. People always complain about no new actor, try the newbie, etc, etc, but when they come, there is no love for them.

Age gap, everyone freak out like every new character introduced is a love partner but when a drama does a reasonable gap, they all said yada-yada, I don't want to search more, it must be the icky age gap.

Kim Yoo Jung is already an adult. She is 20 years old according to Korean law. But she will always will be seen as a teenager. People do not want to see her grow up and become an adult woman.

People are complaining about Ahn Hyo Seop saying he is too much of a rookie without experience and saying he is not a good actor.
Maybe better actors around his age do not want the role.
If slightly older actor come up people will complain about the actor being too old.

Anyway it looks like Kim Yoo Jung has confirmed. I love her and hope this works out for her.

I'm a IU music fan but IU's acting wasn't that great in Scarlet Heart. She probably recieved the biggest hate & criticism she ever had in her entire career in Korea because of her acting in that drama. In my opinion she should stick to singing were is amazing and great since it's her profession anyway. But anyway IU already have an upcoming drama. Plus she's way older than the female lead characters age.

Korean age the female lead is 20 and the male lead is 23. So age wise the actress should be 98/99er while the actor is 95/96er. Which is probably why the PD went after Yoojung (99er) and Ahn Hyo Seop (95er) for the lead roles.

To be honest, if not for the age gap, I would be all over SJR being the MAIN main lead which Ahn Hyo Seop is apparently up for, because I'm really not a fan of ASH. He's very green, but then again, I really, really hated his character in Queen of Ring, so maybe I'm just associating him with that.

Regardless of how I feel, if SJR ends up in it, I'm going to have to watch it anyway, le sigh.

They might save Yeo Jin-gu and Kim Yoo-jung pairing for something epic later, and when they are older.

I’m sure there’s a writer/PD working on that epic saeguk now!

With this PD's resume, Yoo-jung can reunite with him in that epic sageuk with Jin-goo.

3

Praying for that to be true, since watching Moon Embracing the Sun I have been dying to watch their reunion and preferably in a saeguk!!!

3

True. Yeo Jin Goo and Kim Yoo Jung should reunite in a epic saegeuk drama because that's what their pairing are most known for in Korea since the 2 times they were paired up ate on 2 hugely successful saegeuk (Iljimae & METS). Many will anticipate it for sure.

For Yoo Seon Ho and Kim Yoo Jung I want them to reunite on a mordern drama this year. I think it'll be awesome if their teaming exactly 10 years later. I remember their past childhood photos together going viral in Korea before like on 2013/2014 because they've grown up so much and people are comparing the photos of then and now.

Ugh! No! He’s too old. He’s too old! (to be paired with Kim Yoo Jung). Was my first reaction when I read the headlines. But if he were to feature in a non romantic capacity in this drama I’m all for it. I read Ahn Hyo-seop was to be her romantic partner in the drama. While he’s age appropriate, he’s still quite green and wooden. He depends a lot on his capable co-stars like Kim Seul gi and Ryu Hwayoung. Honestly, there are more capable younger actors out there who would have done justice to this role. If he were female, he’d have gotten a lot more flak for this casting decision by now. But it’s cable, and a “young” romance. So it seems that the public’s expectation is not very high.

Sigh, the male leads are all wrong. One is too wooden and the other too old for her. It’s just one uncomfortable watching with that 18 year age gap unless it’s unrequited love on her end. There are actually tons of age appropriate actors, why settle on these 2? Probably pressure from their agencies? Sometimes agencies have a stake in the production with the condition to use their artistes.

I was so excited about SJR as the lead.
I can't understand all the fuss about the age gap, since she's an adult (18) and he is (and looks) really young but probably that's because I'm from another country thus a different culture. I don't see any problem in this since they're both adults, but this seems to be a sensitive issue in Korea.

I don't know why people assumed SJR character is a love triangle. If he is they would have mentioned it on the article. I think the real issue here are the people who are too quick to assume and start criticizing without knowing anything.

Because K-drama casting is very typical lol.
Like how the production team of IU's drama claim that it would be a "healing" /family one and everybody was relieved there would be no romance; but in the end when character descriptions are revealed, IU's character was said to fall in love with the male lead's character eventually.
It would be a pleasant surprise if SJR's character is somewhat like a mentor to the female lead.

To be fair, early k-media reports did say he was the male lead, which caused so much confusion (and uproar among knetz and i-fans) earlier. And since it's Song Jae-rim, many people would assume that he's the second lead/main romantic rival. I share the same concerns that he's too old to play the romantic rival so I hope the show subverts expectations. Anyway, he's playing a canon foreigner so anything could happen, depending on what liberties the drama will take with the source material.

People always mentioned Yeo Jin-goo because they were the dream pair since "Iljimae" and that was 10 years ago.
I agree that Park Ji-bin needs a come back and reunion with Yoo-jung.
The last time I saw them together in a drama was in "May Queen."

I don’t understand all this agism associated with these comments. I’ll be in the minority by saying that age shouldn’t be an issue here. The longer I’ve lived, the more I’ve learned that age is really just a number, and I’ve have several friends in lasting marriages with men much older than they and others who are divorced after marrying someone their age. Give me similar maturity levels and I’m good. Also, this story is about someone who owns his own (successful) business. Do we expect a 20-25 year old to be able to run this? As a 40 year old, I’m barely able to. My bestie was a temp at her now husband’s law firm. She was 19, he was old enough to be out of law school and running his on firm. They got married after she graduated college. There are 12 years between them. They’ve been married for almost 20 years. This pairing is adorable, and I’m looking forward to it.

I too do not have a big problem with age gaps. Has no one seen Harold and Maude???????? (See it it's fantastic) Or is it ok if the female is older but not if it's the man? I don't mind age gaps too much if they are done well and appropriately. She is very young but not a minor and it seems she is the same age as the original character. We should hold our reservations until we know more about the storyline.

Yea I normally don’t have an issue...I personally really like the look of Radio Romance for example. I agree that age is just a number. I think its bc Kim Yoo Jung has been a child actress for so long and she still looks like a child, to be blunt. I think she’s beautiful and one of my favorites so I follow and keep up with news about her and therefore definitely believe she’s capable of carrying any role. But sometimes physical appearances matter...like in this instance, for me. I know she’s one of those girls likely to age well (look 15 forever), but until we have her age to justify pairing her across a more mature-looking man, its strange to me simply because she looks like a kid. Just my opinion.

yeah, it's a job and this fuss about how bad it is for her is a hypocrite argument.

They are deciding this themselves and they fit the character.
You can't have it both way, either it's a job, therefore, no one can't argue with them or exploitation which means that everyone should have the same standard no matter what they feel, which also mean limiting people's choice, sigh

I'm not sure about this casting news. It doesn't seem to match Song Jae-rim. I think he's better off taking the role of my husband... XD

But in all seriousness, is it that hard to cast someone near Kim Yoo-jung's age AND acting talent? (Sorry Ahn Hyo-seop, you're cute but you're no Yoo Seung-ho.)

I hope Rim's role is more of the Bok-joo/Doctor thing. I'd rather Oppa had a funny/quirky side role and get love from the audience than be the lead in a drama that turns off a lot of people.

Yes, I was thinking something like WFKBJ would be best in this situation. I can definitely accept a one-sided puppy love/crush from her character. Or he could be a sort of mentor or something similar for either of the characters.

The directors seems to be competent seeing his/her history of directing Cruel Palace. I only manage to saw several episodes of the show (I dropped it because the mood of the show is too tragic) and I have a positive perception of the director's work. Several drama avid watchers seem to praise his work too, so YAY for the director!

The writer umm... my view of him/her a bit iffy because a lot of people seems to find Joseon Gunman bland. Also, the drama genre is romantic comedy which is famous for being difficult to achieve a good and satisfying ending. This fact makes me a bit worried, however I'll try to remain positive.

I would love to see Jae rim as Yoo jung's older brother (or as her crush would be fine) with his own love line on the side.

In the webtoon, the female MC is not dirty because she is a dirty person but because she has a trauma associated with clean spaces--something to do with her parents dying and the house they bought. Anyway, the webtoon is really prettily drawn and it handles grief in a beautiful way.

I hope they keep that aspect of the webtoon instead of making her dirty without reason.

Initially I thought: Park Hyung shik, Yoo Seung Ho, Park Bo Gum...but these people are unlikely to take on the lead role 😭. I hope whoever stars across her is someone not only close to her age but worthy of gracing the same frame as her.

Ahn Hyo Seob is the actor who will be Kim Yoo Jung's partner.

If people do not like it, do not watch it.

People will always infantilize Kim Yoo Jung.

Kim Yoo Jung is already an adult. She is 20 years old according to Korean law. But she will always will be seen as a teenager. People do not want to see her grow up and become an adult woman.

People love to forget an young Korean actress can do a drama with 20+ episodes without doing scenes involving hot passionate kisses and hot passionate hugs.

Kim Yoo Jung's innocence is well protected.

People are complaining about Ahn Hyo Seop saying he is too much of a rookie without experience and saying he is not a good actor.
Maybe better actors around his age do not want the role.
If slightly older actor come up people will complain about the actor being too old.
This character is simply too doomed. For a start the actress who plays his love interest is someone people can not see as a woman.

There are couple of good actor even though their age is in 20's. Yeo gin goo, Lee won geun , Kwak Dong yeon and Ji soo. Why they are not choosing any one of these actors for this webtoon?

Kwak Dong-yeon is tied up until late March to early April for Radio Romance and (weirdly enough) no one seems to trust him enough to cast him as lead in a drama yet, while Yeo Jin-goo does not look like the male lead in the webtoon (and I'd much rather he reserve his reunion with Yoo-jung for something epic). As for Lee Won-geun, imagine the handwringing over him being too old for Yoo-jung. Bo-gum's a couple of years younger than LWG and only 6 years older than Yoo-jung yet there was a lot of handwringing over the Moonlight pairing.

Visually, Ahn Hyo-seop is perfect. He's super tall and can pass for someone in his mid-late 20s, and yet he's young enough that age difference isn't an issue. The only other actor in his early 20s I can think of who could be a visual match to the webtoon character is Lee Taehwan, but he still has My Golden Life. Ahn Hyo-seop's acting isn't that good, but I hope he'll do well with competent directing, just like Fairy's PD made Nam Joo-hyuk and Lee Sung-kyung convincing in their roles.

Personally, I was hoping for Yang Se-jong since his name was rumored to be attached to this drama a few weeks back. I think he and Yoo-jung would've been cute together.

Looks like it’s a love triangle, based on the latest soompi article. In this time and age, to pair up an otp with such a wide age gap is creepy. Especially the upcoming one with IU and Mr Voice.
