Hyun Bin offered new sci-fi drama from W–Two Worlds writer

It looks like Hyun Bin (The Swindlers) is in high demand for a drama comeback, but when is that ever not the case? He’s already considering an offer for SBS’s melodrama Fox Bride Star alongside Park Shin-hye, but now he has a new offer on the table to star in the sci-fi action thriller Memories of the Alhambra over at tvN. This is the highly anticipated new drama from star writer Song Jae-jung of W–Two Worlds, Nine, and Queen In-hyun’s Man, and PD Ahn Gil-ho of last year’s critical success Forest of Secrets.

The series is about alternate realities, and centers around an augmented reality game that distorts your perception of the world around you. The story begins at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, where a traveler and a hotelier get entangled in a strange situation. Hyun Bin has been offered the leading role, a CEO of an investment firm who travels to Spain on business and ends up staying at a cheap hotel run by the heroine, who is a former guitarist.

There haven’t been any plot updates since the project was first announced, but I don’t expect any major details until the show starts (and probably blows all our minds with some crazy twist right off the bat). I have a feeling that Hyun Bin will lean towards the action thriller, if his list of recent film choices is anything to go by: Joseon zombie thriller Rampant, crime caper The Swindlers, action thriller Confidential Assignment, (totally badass) historical action The Fatal Encounter… you get the drift. I would definitely love to see him come back to dramaland for a worthwhile project, and this one certainly seems up to snuff. Just say yes!

Memories of the Alhambra is expected to air later this year on tvN.

Can't Park Shin Hye do the sci-fi too?? Pretty please! I don't want to watch her in a melodrama. Both of them in the action thriller would be so much fun!!

Also, this drama is probably going to be a really fun ride but slightly disappointing at the end due to lack of narrative logic. I'd still watch it though..for sure.

I would be excited enough for this type of concept even without Binnie. But if Binnie signs on I’ll be freaking out with joy. The title/setup sounds kind of sic-fi noir (which there were hints of in W, too) and I think that would suit him so well!

This sounds like a much better choice for him than the melodrama who's plot sounded really boring. SBS please come up with better plots. Hope Park shin hye rejects that one too though I really want to see her in a drama.

I was waiting for Memories of Alhambra from the day it was announced!!! So happy to see one of my favs probably get to play as its lead. Even more happy that there's a big chance for him to decline the SBS drama because it sounds nothing new for a Hyun Bin comeback so i'm all for an amazing thrilling drama playing by HB! I have high hopes he'll accept this ❤

Hyun-bin seems to prefer to take risks with his projects, so I wish him good luck this time. This plot is intriguing, so I hope it will be done right until the end. He can always go back to full romance drama later, this genre will stay alive forever.

"a CEO of an investment firm who travels to Spain on business and ends up staying at a cheap hotel run by the heroine, who is a former guitarist."

The guitarist bit just reminded me of the beginning of Queen of Office, where the female lead was a female bullfighter, no less, before she was summoned back to Korea to work as an elite temp worker :-)) .

As a Spaniard I am rolling my eyes a bit at the Andalucian orientalism that I have learnt to expect, but mostly I wish I actually lived nearby to stalk the shooting :-)) . But at the very least there will be some gorgeous location shots, and I do feel blessed that Spain is on the radar of so many k-ent producers lately... of course, I cannot *not* watch, whatever the plot; Hyun Bin would probably be reason enough, but oddly, I think I haven't seen any of his dramas yet...

My mom plays the guitar and loves listening to "Memories of the Alhambra." That's how I first heard of it.

I hope they'd hire the music director from "Rebel." Maybe use some of Jang Dae-kun's Spanish Korean music. He's awesome!

That's interesting, I didn't know Jang Dae-kung :-) . Hopefully they'll pick good guitar music for the OST. But now I am getting apprehensive that they'll make the female lead pretend to be playing, and that isn't easy to fake with classical guitar... :-))

@kiara,

Thanks for that fascinating interview with Jang Dae-kun. It was nifty to hear his take on the similarities between Spanish and Korean folk music.

I second your vote for REBEL's music director.

I think I read it was the writter of W Two Worlds. If I liked the beginning of the story, I didn't like the rest. It's good to have a good idea but it's better to be able to tell a story that can last all the episodes...

The writting of the last drama of Hyun Bin was bad, so I hope he will choose a good one this time because I really want to see him in a drama :)

I'm really really really happy he's not being paired with Park Shin Hye for this drama! I almost had a mini panic about the other drama he's doing with her but it's a melo so odds are I wouldn't watch it anyways. Not that I think she's horrible--I think she's just good enough that she isn't bad it just seems like she's literally the same person in all of her dramas. I think it goes beyond being cast type because I can't help but think other more talented actresses would be able to pull out more layers from their characters to make them each stand out individually. I'm hoping he's paired with a more talented actress for this one because it already seems to be a dream team. I mean writer of W–Two Worlds and Queen In-hyun’s Man?? PD of my Forest of Secrets?? This will be SO insane and I can't wait to see it. ::squees::

I’m really really happy Park Shin Hye is not paired with Hyun Bin for that drama. I almost had a mini panic about that drama she’s doing with him but it’s a melo so odds are I wouldn’t watch it anyways. Not that I think he’s horrible--I think he’s just good enough that he isn’t bad it just seems like he’s literally the same person in all of his dramas. I’m hoping SHE’S paired with a more talented actor for that one because it already seems to be a dream team. I mean the writer of romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and Kim Tak Goo?? PD of Secret Garden and Gentleman’s Dignity?? This will be SO insane and I can’t wait to see it. ::squees:: :)

Literally, Hyun Bin has one expression and has played the chaebol jerk forever. And you’re saying that she’s the same in every drama and can’t pull out layers? Well, she has acted with Choi Min Sik and got good reviews for her acting from critics in Blackened Heart and she held her own very well against him. So she has acted with WAYYY better actor so you can keep it :)

We’re definitely all entitled to our own opinions—you like her and that's wonderful. Like I said, I don't think she's horrible, there are definitely worst actresses— but she’s just good enough not to be labeled as bad—by my standards. And that's the thing, we all have different standards by which we measure someone’s acting skills and ability to enjoy a drama based on their depiction each character their given. If a character is well portrayed whether good or bad, that is a reflection of skill level of that actor or actress (to me). As mentioned in my initial comment my main qualm with PSH is that she *doesn’t* bring much to the table when differentiating between one character to the next. It’s like a copy and paste effect—and honestly she’s not the only one that does it. The key thing here is I’m not bothered by the fact that she’s casted as a specific character *type* but that she, as an actress, can’t sell to me what’s different from one character to the next. That’s just a personal standard of mine that she hasn’t met and it can’t be wavered or changed by who she’s acted across, however big or small because I’d be judging her skill level not theirs. Again, this is all subjective which I understand and so am not bothered by your fierce defense of her--to each their own. As for Hyun Bin and his asshole chaebol characters—truth, he does get cast as that a lot in dramas but not in all his movies and again—i’m not judging anyone based on the characters they play but rather their (the actors) ability to make me give a damn about the story, the character and their growth. Two very different things.

Okay. This article had nothing to do with her though. But you were so happy about this offer because you almost had mini panic about the other offer because you actually wanted Hyun bin to be paired with a 'more talented' actress. Then you went on a lengthy explanation of how she doesn’t bring enough on table.. You should first check if Hyun Bin is even as good as you think he is. He’s been playing a similar character for the longest time, with no layers whatsoever and it almost brought him down in Hyde, Jekyll and Me (for which the kdrama fandom conveniently loves to blame Han Ji Min for). Until Confidential Assignment brought him back to the surface. Hyun Bin would only wish to act with a successful actress like Park Shin Hye who has commercial hits under her belt and fair amount of critical acclaim too, not to forget how she’s been praised to be easy to work with. And how the male actors’ popularity suddenly sky-rocket after working with her. International fans obsession to put her down for whatever reasons right after Heirs is so hilarious. She’s been called names and compared to ’emotionless actress’ Kristen Stewart, who by the way has gotten BAFTA and César awards respectively from her movies after Twilight. Looks like if an actor has better material to work with, actor’s acting is better too. The hate against Par Shin Hye is slowly fizzling out because there are very little excuses to actively put her down but then on this site, people seem to live in a little bubble. Especially the little oppa fangirls who have their designated favorites that never get critique and then those who get comments like ’’unbearable’’, ’’sub par/ not on par’’, ’’co-star deserves better’’… It’s okay though. You are completely entitled to your opinion. And so am I, right? Not a fierce defense, just annoyed seeing year after year the same bs. I’m not a blind fangirl either. I know Park Shin Hye is not the greatest and of course I think that there is room for improvement. I also think she needs to pick up different roles and diversify. However, the way I see it, your comment’s intent was to put her down. You ain't slick because I did not miss the underlying tone of your first comment :)

100000% agreed. So tired of people bringing her down constantly when she's a pretty decent actress.

1

Sigh. She was mentioned in the article along with the other drama he's acting in. It was the first time I heard of both the fact that he was acting in another drama, the name of it and the co-star, hence part of my comment related to my reaction. If you thought I was putting her down--I'm sorry, but I'm honestly not responsible for your perceptions + judgements.

1

seriously we don't fucking care about your opinions about park shin hye .
You don't need to mention her name in not related article about your fave actor .
we don't care if shin hye paired with him we honestly want woman centered drama without your fave men so we don't have noisy comments from persons like you.

You people are doing this on purpose right now. She knows more than enough how to kiss. How hard is it for you stupid international kdrama fans to drill this into your brains that —actresses do as they are directed to do—. She doesn’t need Hyun Bin to teach her, an adult professional actress and a successful woman, how to kiss. Seriously shame on you. Oppa fangirls sure know how to spread their subtle misogyny.

Ugh don’t tell me what to do. I’ll do whatever I want to do. I’m not a kid, believe me or not :D
I know no one’s personally attacking me. I’m just calling out the subtle sexism that’s so rampant in the fandom. I’m actually waiting for a day when kdrama fandom collectively goes against male actors for their kissing skills or the lack thereof. That won’t happen because oppa is perfect and swoon uwu~ (never mind the fact that directors and script writers are the ones to decide how a kiss scene comes out, never mind the fact that two directors have told in interviews that they had to edit and censor some kiss scenes to fit the public broadcasting channels’ standards because the initial scenes were ’too erotic’, never mind the fact that certain director never told an actress that there was going to be a deep kiss scene so she was completely taken aback when the director and actor pulled this trick on her..)
