Kang So-ra offered fantasy-romance drama as 699-year-old barista fairy

Yup, you read that right. Kang So-ra (Revolutionary Love) is considering her next drama, and the fantasy-romance series has me intrigued: It’s called Gyeryong Fairy Tale, where Gyeryong is a location in the province of Chungcheong (note: the latter part means “tale of a fairy” rather than the “fairy tale” genre of stories). Given how much I enjoy watching Kang So-ra and how disappointed I’ve been in recent projects from her, I’m hoping for a better result this time.

Gyeryong Fairy Tale is based on a Naver webtoon and centers around a 699-year-old fairy from Gyeryong mountain who lives through Goryeo and Joseon times, who then becomes a barista. That’s a strange trajectory if I ever saw one. She is on the hunt for her reincarnated husband and her winged clothing, which recalls the famous folktale about the woodcutter who married a fairy when he hid her winged clothes to prevent her from returning to her heavenly home. (Yes, I have huge problems with this fairy tale.)

The role Kang So-ra has been offered is the main character of the fairy, who lost her winged clothing after taking a bath in a pond (because the woodcutter stole them!) and then married the woodcutter who came to her aid (after first disarming and isolating her!). But in this drama, the husband loses his footing on a precipice and falls to his death, and ever since then the fairy has been waiting for him to be reincarnated. She now works as a barista, and to ordinary people she appears as a grandmother but retains her youthful appearance in front of certain people with whom she has a special connection. She also possesses the power of being able to talk to plants.

The plot is certainly attention-grabbing, and I’m in the mood for an innovative story. Hopefully PD Kim Yoon-chul brings the quirky story to life; I have liked many of his previous dramas, like the contemplative Could We Marry?, the intense Que Sera Sera, and of course the seminal My Name Is Kim Sam-soon. (We’ll just ignore Madam Antoine, shall we?)

Gyeryong Fairy Tale is being considered for a tvN slot later this year.

Just like cinderella, I guess there's always a version of this story in every culture, LOL 😂
In our version the fairies don't have wings but they have magic scarf that can make them fly to heavenly home.
I'm gonna pass this. I've seen too many adaption of this story from movies, tv series to school drama! I even played as one of the fairy.

Ha! I didn't see your comment before writing mine. But yeah, there are a lot of versions of this story.

Playing one of the fairies has to be better than playing one of the evil step-sisters.

I am very intrigued. Is she looking for her husband for revenge? To get him to give back her clothes? Because she loves him and misses him? And how come he hasn't been reincarnated yet? Is it a punishment for trapping her and stealing her clothes? Or has she just missed intermediate incarnations?

Also, the Woodcutter and the Fairy story reminds me of the selkie stories. Which, really, is kind of sad that "trapping a mystical woman and forcing her to marry you" is a reoccurring trope across folktales worldwide.

Oh I like the idea that she's looking for him to take revenge!

It's of course possible that the first fall off the precipice wasn't entirely an accident either! Maybe he has been reincarnated quite a few times because ... well let's just say she made him reincarnate a lot more often than he would have done if he hadn't messed with the wrong Fairy.

I'm not holding my breath that this is going to happen in this drama of course, but that version would be very funny.

I dislike those woodcutter/selkie kidnapping folktales in their different variations, though I do appreciate how the fairy/selkie would manage to find the robe/skin again and ditch the kidnapper/husband. In those stories, I don't think any of the fairies/selkies encountered their skin/robe again and were like "yeah. I want to stay here on earth and continue being with my kidnapper husband."

I have so many of the same questions you did about what this fairy is looking for. I'm curious to see what trajectory we're going with. And would the reincarnation of the woodcutter be a nice guy? But waiting 600+ years for the reincarnation to give me back my means of getting home...I would feel very annoyed...even murderous.

Wait so they're gonna make Sora a grandma?! The story seems like a mess tbh and her past works *RL,W&C* have been subpar. But that being said I love Sora so much I'm willing to watch this, wonder who her grandpa husband will be

The story featured the fairy in both her old and youthful selves, which is her true appearance. The premise was certainly quirky but the webtoon author's writing somehow made it work, so maybe the production team should consult her for the script.

Thanks for the heads-up, JavaBeans! I'm going into Gong Yoo overload with the description of the plot. It sounds like COFFEE PRINCE meets GOBLIN, with a sex change. If the fairy's a tomboy, then it's Eun-chan, not Han Gyul, who does the Kim Shin trip.

I’m sitting here, desperately praying for this to be good. You’ve done Kang So-ra dirty too many times, dramaland! It’s been dud after dud for her after Misaeng and it makes me sad. Neighborhood Lawyer wasn’t bad, but it was hardly noteworthy and her character left much to be desired.

I'm probably one of the few who liked Revolutionary Love; it was funny. But I hope Kang Sora will get a project that gives her due recognition - she hasn't had a good project handed to her since 2014! This sounds really cute and interesting. Hoping for good writing and a good male lead.

Err.. I had Seo Ji-hye in mind for this role ever since I heard for this remake for the first time 😅 Kang So-ra is OK too, it's just that I'm not exactly wow with her. She seems to be picky in choosing her projects, unfortunately most of them failed to make her shine and memorable. Good luck for her for this time!

PD is good, so hopefully the writer is good too. I might checking this one when it's out later - hope the male lead is good!

At the moment I read the title, "the barista fairy" I was imagining Kang So Ra being the new look of the Summer Fairy in Hwayugi. It's still really sad that she's dead before we learned the real truth about her tragedy :'(

Anyway I'm looking forward to this. Kang So Ra (if she accept) is a great actress but sadly some of her projects didnt come up really well (the worst of them all is the recent RL, and I blamed the story for it).

Also, she has the ability to talk the plants? If it means controlling the plants, I still can accept it. But talking? I mean, do they really talk? :D :D But it's unique, thought. I havent read the webtoon so we'll just see how it's going to make the story interesting

Nah. This is a mainstream romance drama so this will probably be Disneyfied. The husband doesn't steal the clothes, but a new villain is the culprit. Bonus points if the husband dies trying to get the clothes back and the villain pins the clothes stealing on him, which gives rise to the problematic fairytale.

The villian will be a hugely successful fashion designer in the modern setting. He uses the fairy-cloth to inspire him and kick-start his career.

The husband can be a low-key, honest living, poor tailor.

Through this drama we'll get massive clothing brands PPL where even the cleaners wear trendy clothes.

Only the fairy will be a poor barista, because all female lead in kdrama is poor (but with the latest and most expensive Samsung phone, of course!)

Here's what it says about the drama at Asianwiki:

In the Goryeo period, Sun Ok-Nam was a fairy. She came down to this world and took a bath at a waterfall on Gyeryong Mountain. While she took the bath, a woodcutter took her fairy clothes and hid them. Because of this, Sun Ok-Nam could not go back to Heaven. She then married the woodcutter and they had two children together, but her husband died from falling off of a cliff. Sun Ok-Nam tried to find her fairy clothes, but she still could not locate it. Needing her fairy clothes, she decides to wait for husband to be reincarnated.

Now in the present day, she makes coffee at a cafe on Gyeryong Mountain and waits for her reincarnated husband. Finally, after 699 years, she gets a feeling that one of the two men visiting her cafe from Seoul is her reincarnated husband. Sun Ok-Nam is not sure which one of the two men is her husband. She decides to follow them to Seoul to find out.

There is a story in the Arabian Nights like this folk tale. The girl was a swan and she leaves the husband when she gets a hold of her "dress that turns her into a swan." There is no reincarnation though; the couple separates and then reunites in the same lifetime.

it gives a message about not using anyone because the result will be an insincere and unfulfilling relationship.
