I do have a QUESTION, even 2

which drama character has the unhealthiest lifestyle? (besides the recent Gang Doo)? whatever it is caused by, supernatural habits included.

and: what´s your take on breakfast / brunch dates /meetings? a lot of busy people here schedule meet-ups for early morning lately, like 7.30 or even earlier before work to save time because in the evenings people work late and have to get home to their families. Would you go out at dawn for a breakfast date? Can you recall a breakfast date in a drama?

i have a question for you..
can someone learn sketching/painting/drawing at a later stage..i mean am no more in school..

from the basics? and r there online material to get started? not too much investment preferably?

Or how you'd recommend to get started on drawing/painting/art

of course you can start! everyone actually has skills. What you need is not skills but the will and desire. Just start sketching something, and dont try to be realistic or accurate but draw as you would draw it - the way you see and feel it. start from things you really really like. that will give you a bit of extra patience to finish what you start. keep a sketchbook for trying out different pencils, brushes, different strokes and lines.

one of the best materials for beginners is coal - you don´t have to be accurate or very detailed. another technique is monoprinting with gouash or acrylic. you can be a beginner in painting and get a great result.

Thanks! I guess I'd have to go and study about scale and proportion first since i have no idea how to apply that.. haha!

Wow, Kandinsky started with ART in his 30s? I feel a connection with him now... lol

Half the K-drama population seem to live exclusively off raymun, kimbap and soju. The other half have lavish meals for breakfast.

you can try with watercolor as well, but you need to have some idea of scale and proportion if you want to paint something specific. Unless you pull a Kandinsky and just do abstract. One way is to combine watercolor + ink drawing or oil pastels. then you can do a background of watercolor and go more precise with drawing

b'fast date in a drama - while you were sleeping..but then in a way they were dating 24 hrs... if not in physical realm then in the dream world/future

personally..if its a phone meeting then sure... allow me to reach office accordingly (if late then so be it).. but actually traveling to some place..is tough.. and winter mornings...impossible

I am watching but haven't catch up on epi 3 & 4 yet! sigh. I'll go visit epi 1 recap to see the discussions there. This might not a heavy-but- feel-good drama like Just Between Lovers, but I hope more people are watching. Live-watching is hard, but I guess binge-watching will be harder lol.

LOL.... JBL it's an easy watch for me... But Mother, Nah! That's another story haha.
But I already Binge watching something heavier,It's a drama you should watch as an active watcher. analys every single detail to make watching experience become something special.

2

Yeah, when it comes to heavier shows I prefer to live-watch them because binge-watching would just make me depressed.

3

Noooooo don't say that. *over-dramatic*
I really, really want to watch it! But time and real life does not permit! Plus, it's not a light watch, I'm sure - I need more time than just the one episode, but also time after to emotionally recover.

I got impatient and ended up watching the original Japanese version. I really love it!
Yasuko Matsuyuki and Mana Ashida were excellent. I'm a new fan of Mana. She reminds me of Kim Yoo-jung when she was at that age and Heo Yool reminds me of Kim Sae-ron.

Which one do you think is better so far? Mother korean version or japanese one? I think they will offering different viewing i guess. I should look more about Yuji Sakamoto writer creation i guess!

Required fields are marked *

I love them both in different ways. However I do "prefer" Yasuko and Mana. They are both very natural and fit the flow of the Japanese version.
(Kind of an unfair statement since the K-version is not completed yet).

I've watched Lee Bo-young in her earlier works and didn't think much of her acting even in sageuks. She gets the job done and nothing more.
Currently she has the luxury of picking good roles for her age with good writers and PDs ever since "My Daughter Seo-young."
I know I'm alone in this so don't shoot me :p.

The K-version of "Mother" is totally a Korean drama on it's own thanks to the writer.
I don't feel like I'm watching a Yuji Sakamoto creation.

Well.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feel ambivalent with Lee Bo Young as the lead. She is just doesn't has enough range to pull a good character become compelling. in the hand of a better actress, I imagine, I will be drawn into this drama more. Oh If only, in the hands of Son Ye Jin, for example! Kim Chul Kyu and the writers is definitely doing a good job making me feel about her character.

I want to watch Mother Japanese version. But I'm afraid I will lost interest in Kdrama version because I will know the plot already. Haha... Glad It's actually different ! I think this is Kim CHul Kyu Best directing in recent memory (excluding his older drama because I'm not watching them, LOL). What do you think? His music choice is also better here compare to My beautiful Bride?

I'm watching Mother too! It's a heavy topic but that little girl is amazing. I get introduced to lady lead from I Hear Your Voice and now I'm happy to see her in Mother. The later episodes are lighter now that we have more space between bad uncle and the kid. I'm relieved and curious where they'll go after this. I'm kind of relieved that bird researcher's mom was not an abuser too....at least that's what I'm hoping.

I am also bingeing Prison Playbook on Netflix and it does not disappoint! Definitely the best drama they put out in the sphere of Kdrama category. I know the PD is from the Reply series as well as one of the early writers. It's shot really well, the huge ensemble cast is great, and the storylines draw you in. I really recommend it! I want to thank the Strongest Man Delivery "in defense of" column. Because of that I marathon watched SMD and liked it--a lot. I think I avoided that drama because (and it's a silly reason) I thought the title of the show was so inane.
I wonder how many other good shows I've missed for stupid reasons?
I almost didn't watch "Fool's Love" because the trailer was annoying. I watched it, then dropped it, then picked it up again because the recaps were so good.
And Manhole? The trailer for that looked SO fun. (But I never finished that show.)
Any how, after writing this, losing it because I couldn't log on, resetting my password, and then reposting it--I want to thank "In Defense Of" and hope to find more gems to watch.

I have decided to revise my rating system again. I am gonna put most kdramas into 4 to 4.5 and 6 to 7.5. I am forced to do so because of Just Between Lovers. I can't give Just Between Lovers more than 7(its futile being so genrous) but then i gave many other mediocre shows 7 too. Needed to reduce score to make space for another mediocre show.

Radio Romance - Its 2018. Why is writer still living in 2003. This kind of script should be thrown from the 75th floor into the dustbin. I just don't know how these writers get hired.

@sancheezy Kakeguri 1st episode beta translation did the job. I was laughing out loud at the madness there. When i saw its manga raws i was convinced it will be popular and it became when fan translations started to pop up.
Same goes for After The rain aka Ameagari - I had this feeling that this manga will do good and now it has anime and live-adaptation. Well, we seeing more and more manga adaptations these days so its natural all popular content getting its own 3D production too.

Open Thread week 52!!! Beanie party time! It’s my one year anniversary on the Open Thread! What should we do to celebrate? This week started beautifully and ended with a lunar eclipse in the middle, and a crisp day today. Had a couple days where it was even nice (and warm) enough to play a few holes of golf—in January! We’re in a temperate climate, and it’s really still winter here. We have a full schedule this weekend, but will likely catch a couple episodes of dramas too!

I’m watching three things right now: IMAGINARY CAT with my daughter, HWAYUGI with my husband, and RADIO ROMANCE with myself. I ended up not binging IMAGINARY CAT because the cat was adorable and I knew my daughter would just eat it up, so the 30-minute episode is perfect to watch with her in the evening. I’ve put some screen caps on my beanie wall if anyone is having withdrawal from I’M NOT A ROBOT and need to see Yoo Seung Ho in something else to transition yourself to normal life.

We’re watching HWAYUGI every evening and catching up quickly to the live show, just finishing episode 8 last night. WHOA, that kiss! Now, I already knew it was coming because of the rampant spoilers, gifs, etc. on the fan wall, but I had NO IDEA that it was when she was meeting the “first love” and when Oh Gong says, “Whatever I do from now on is your fault,” to Ma Wang, I was like, “It’s on like Donkey Kong!” FAVORITE SCENE! The cinematography and camera work, colors and costuming, and acting were absolutely breathtaking! And Lee El, her eyes are priceless.

RADIO ROMANCE is going to be my crack drama I think. Hubby tried to get into it, for Doo Joon, whom he thinks is just a highly likeable guy, but the yelling got to him in the first episode. I can’t say I’m surprised. I love the sageuk drama within the drama in this because I think Doo Joon’s face looks better without any hair obscuring it. He has a beautiful forehead. Anywho, I don’t know where this one will go yet, but I’m looking forward to the ride.

Conversation between daughter and me:

Daughter: I think the cat is going to die in IMAGINARY CAT.
Me: WHAT? Why would you think that? Is it because it’s a Korean drama and someone always seems to die?
Daughter: Yeah, and I saw the boy crying in the rain in the last episode.
Me: Did you watch the end already?
Daughter: Not all of it, just enough to prepare me.
Me: *Raising eyebrow* Prepare you?
Daughter: For my heart to not be broken if the cat dies! She’s so cute!

And this is just funny, while tucking the kids in bed last night:

Me: Goodnight kids, love you!
Kids: Goodnight mom!
Hubby: Goodnight little smokies!
Son: Goodnight big sausage!
Me: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Moral of the story: My family doesn't mind spoilers, actually we welcome them so that our hearts aren't broken.

2nd moral: My daughter is more emotionally mature than I am and has figured out the essence of kdramas.

3rd moral: "Big sausage" is now my...

Yes, Doo Joon has a beautiful forehead. My son has his forehead and I must say that I sometimes admire his( which did not come from me but from my mom). Doo Joon has to show off his beautiful forehead all the time. His forehead' gentle curve and the proportion of width and length are perfect! I think their foreheads are a good example of Asian beauty. Am I the only one who think so? I see a guy who has beautiful eye colors etc but with not so perfect forehead, my heart sinks.

TGIF and Happy Groundhog's Day!
It's 9:19AM and my eyes are burning with weariness after spending all night watching the last few episodes of Prison Playbook. What a great show !!! I didn't want it to end !!!

I've been raving and raving about it every chance I get. I checked out Asianwiki last night and it's ripe with loving comments about the show and I was sooooo happy to not be the only one to adore it!

One negative that stood out for others seems to be the main OTP, Je-Hyeok & Ji-Ho. I guess a lot of people were bothered by how bossy she was and their age difference, but I for one thought they went together REALLY well. yes, they are 10yrs apart but I really liked how natural their relationship evolved. and yes, she's bratty, but she's a brat who's wholly devoted in her love for Je-Hyeok and she goes all out in showering him with love. (contrary to most bratty main chicks in KDramas). Plus, Je-Hyeok's idiot-shy-&-silent-puppy-in-love personality just makes him the right candidate for her jabbing nature.

The Prison crew was phenomenal !!!

I simply couldn't get enough of Han-yang (Looney) and his antics, annoying everyone. it made me a little sad that he got less touchy-feely with the group, but hey. life.
Min-chul was THE sweetest reformed-gangster- teddybear to ever land on kdrama screens. You just wanted to hug him!!

I could go on and on and ooooon.

seriously, go watch it if you haven't. worth every sleepless night binge-watching.

Required fields are marked *

It's so amazing!! I'm on episode 9! I love the cast and all their different storylines. Dr Go's reason for going to prison made me so sad, same with Captain Yoo. Looney is hilarious! I loved the relationship btw the guards (Paeng and Joon-ho) and the prison crew. The main OTP does make me side eye them a bit since in real life they have a big age difference, but I guess they needed someone who was recognizable and would be able to carry the role with a good writer. I love it so far!

reply

Required fields are marked *

yay, @tinabobina ! So glad to have someone to gush over this show with!

see, the OTP have the same age difference in real life as in the show. For some reason, it doesn't bother me in the least, although, as a good Beanie writer pointed out in an unrelated post, it's unfortunate that PDs always cast such young actors and actresses that make the general public cringe at the age difference.

Blame it on The Lonely Goblin's Shin and Eun-Tak or my absolute fav noona romance, Witch's Romance , for spoiling me. the way I see it, as long as the younger one is able to convince me that it's "natural and organic and totally normal" that they fell in love, with normal adult-like interactions, I'm good.

You're me, I don't mind large age differences either, probably because my real life is rife with them. My best friends all are married to men 5-10 + older than they.

In between my live watch of Just Between Lovers, I binge-watched Prison Living. It was worth it, comparable to JBL, although the two dramas are of different genres (everything now is being compared to JBL's standards). I also binge-watched INAR - and just now read the recap of the last episode. Saw some photos, but couldn't remember a few of the supporting cast already. INAR is one of those fluffy nice dramas which I like but quickly forgot. Latest to start - Andante. So far, watched till episode 4. Okay, but not addicting, so got sidetracked by JBL's finale and other things.

Hi all, *the plan is to borrow fellow Beanies' ideas of a brief descrition of the week so - OT Week 1? Though I've been on DB for a year :p*

This week had an awesome start - a Beanie Meet-up (date) with @obsessedmuch! ^^; Seriously all, do meet the Beanies around you - this community is awesome because it is made up of awesome people.

After that it was back to work - Some of you know I'm a lawyer; some know that I've switched from academics to litigation fairly recently (two months ago!). This was my first week arguing in Court! So far I've been seeking adjournments haha; but this week I had to present and argue! O_O The pressure hahaha. I survived. And even received encourging compliments from the Judge's Associate (a Court official) and a few fellow lawyers! Yay! ^^; But then I promptly went and embarrassed myself the next day. *sighs* What a life.

But it's okay right? Because I did well, I'm also allowed to embarrass myself later? To clarify: I didn't make a mistake that affected a client. I was told we are a party in a case, but haven't been served with the documents; so I went and stood before the Bench like a fool. >_<
This is my personal feel good rule anyway.

"If you can't return, go straight through your mistakes and forget them all."

That's that. Can't wait to go home now. Why am I at work at 8.00 pm every Friday evening? LOL

Eeks, That doesn't make sense: the point is that we were not a party in that case! Hence, I looked like an idiot.

Good luck with your lawyer-ing world. I miss going to the court but I'm already comfortable working in different field now. People say it is a waste to spend years for law school but end up choosing not to be a lawyer, but it is not the case for me. At least I can read contracts and understand many legal terms, so people can't take me as a fool 😋 LOL.

Thanks Sera! I completely agree with you - why would you waste the REST OF YOUR LIFE on a career you don't like just because you spent three (or *insert correct no*) years in law school?!

Also, not everyone who goes to law school comes out thinking it was the right choice. I didn't, but I don't know what else to do! ^^

AND, more power to you! :D No one should be able to take you for a fool. Plus, I'm sure you know many lawyers. Muahahahahaha

LOL. Study law is fun (together with the pressures 😪) but work in a legal field is extra hard. Well, you might find your love for this profession later, who knows. 😌 Lawyer at least sounds a cool job to many people, even the reality it isn't. 😅

Hahaha I know! The TV shows are all lies. Just curious - what do you do now Sera?

2

I used to work as a secretary for a year after finished law school, before went into practice for around 3 years. Last year, I went into business development but now I'm thinking to go back as a secretary this year LOL. Secretary is hard as well, but if you meet a good boss and co, it will be fun. Even I'm not a lawyer anymore, I still need to go through legal docs sometimes so it might be right that once you're a lawyer, you'll forever be a lawyer LOL.

4

Haha I agree with that - even when I tried to switch, I was always offered legal research related roles. LOL I gave up (on switching)

I hope you find something you want to do. Or even just a good boss and co-workers - this alone isn't easy to come by in my experience.

2

I have a lawyer friend who does this and he plays golf every day--so, there's the trade off! LOL!

Hahaha hello my finisheded the law school and turned to other careers fellow! Well said well said.. why did you have to spend the rest of your life on something which it’s your thing. It looked cool to tell ppl that you are a law schooler.. but I agreed that not many ppl find legal careers their right choices. Neither did I.

I turned to something more fun for me like linguistics. Luckily I enjoy working in the area these two fields intersect. Unlike you, I don’t really like going to court. I sometimes go there as a court appointed interpreter for the defendant in criminal cases. But that gloomy atmosphere and the charges! Awwww I think being there for too long really suffocated me.

To be honest, these days we probably end up having to work for 40 years or something. Who would want to do the same job all that time? Hurray for change - at whatever stage of your life.

I strongly believe that none of that experience is wasted! Not education and not work experience.

Hi Everyone! I hope you are all doing well today!

This week:

Radio Romance - I've only watched episode 1. I definitely need to watch the second episode because I'm still unsure about it, although I did find the Su-ho character a bit interesting, given that he is literally acting in his life all the time, even when the camera isn't rolling.

Black Knight - Ok, barring any horrible accident for our main couple, which I kind of think I see coming, Sharon dies when our main couple marries, right? ...... Right???!

Just Between Lovers - Simply fantastic ...... and made more so by the shared viewing experience with all the Beanies! ..... I already know what happens, but I still need to watch the last two episodes!

Money Flower - Jumped back in again at episode 14. So good! ....... And that ending!!

Victoria (Season 2) - The prolonged periods of Prince Albert's moodiness can get a little boring. ...... Missing Lord Melbourne already.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I also find Su-ho's character interesting, especially when he talks to his PA, saying he did something or he asked something with a smile on his face so he should just take what he said and let the issue go. I make the "oh sssht" reaction whenever he does this. He really is good at acting even in the real word with real people around him. I'm looking forward to more of his story arc.

Have a wonderful Friday, @korfan <3 ! See you on Radio Romance's recaps?! Heeh.

Nirvana in Fire 2 : The Wind blows in Changlin.
I am up to ep 48 and man, if there is anything to describe NIF2, it's more family relation, more people [if you watch, you know what I mean], more battle and more grown-up decision.

It makes me feel like I can't rate is like NIF1 because they have a different bar. It's a drama that probably people will skip because the main character didn't drive the story forward which I find new since it stays the same for the MC until now, it's a different type of lead which really can make people like it or not liking it.

NIF2 makes me tear up a lot because you just can't escape it, when they bow together, when they are in the battle, when they make the decision over the border [both PZ and PJ], when Yuanshi and Tingsheng hand is held by the emperor, when the rain comes in multiples day and when you learn how to swim [hehehe]

I heard that it supposed to be 36/38 ep but they kinda stretched it to be 50 and I did see some plot holes [depend on how you think about it], I do have some disappointment with how the crimes got punished or it just because NIF1 is really good +satisfying in showing their villain what they have done while in NIF2, they aren't fully evil, they helped sometimes which makes them fall in the gray area and their demised isn't like NIF1.

Overall, I am eager for the next 2 last ep but I really like how NIF2 build the sense of responsibility, choosing your life, family line and so many battle.

I just back from a wedding and probably gonna catch up Return, I saw one comment say that return is all about Oh Tae Suk's journey to find his murderer side, it kinda makes me chuckle because you can see it that way too, like Hannibal or dexter who is the main character in a show about catching them.

Just finished Nara's Rain (KBS Drama Special) , written by a writer of Come and Hug Me. Very great drama, and both leads are so good. It also further convinced me that neither Suzy nor Nam Joo-hyuk would be able to portray emotions required for such healing drama, unless if they could get someone lime Kim Jin-won to direct them, but I'm refused to let him to work extra hard. It's a pity to see drama with a potential like this goes to mediocre actors, when there are plenty of better actors.

Also re-watched You're Closer Than I Think and would be able to see it differently this time. Would love to see a sequel of this drama, from the heroine's perspective. Her story was under-developed in this drama, I feel like there are more story of her especially with her mother's condition and if this drama willing to go deeper and darker, we might get a drama with dealing with a depression as well. Relatable characters are easier to understand but not complex characters because they might be in minority and not everyone can see their inner conflicts. I'm looking forward to see more complex characters in kdrama and how kdrama approach them. Mother is one rare kdrama that I really appreciate - hard to watch but it's time kdrama to bravely approach this kind of subject matter.

I've yet to start Mother. It's such a heavy subject, I need to be in the right frame of mind. I have a feeling it'll be like what Solomon's Perjury and Misaeng are to me: heavy shows that I watched slowly - over the course of two or three months; but I love them. They stand out, and will always hold a special place in my heart.

How dare a drama be so clever and thoughtful, funny and sad, full of such delightful, complex characters, right when I can't focus on it?? Bah, humbug.

I'm sad that January has finished. I normally don't like January because it's that dark month after all the fun festivities have finished (at least it is where I live)

But this year January brought me almost perfect drama watching across different genres:

A great ensemble piece with Prison Playbook
A great rom-com with I'm Not A Robot
and a great melo in Just Between Lovers.

Wasn't this the best month in drama-watching for a long time?

I totally agree that Prison Playbook and Just Between Lovers are fantastic. Great start to the year.

Haven't had time to start on I'm Not A Robot though. Don't think I can start on any rom-com anytime soon, maybe when all the JBL feels have disappeared, which I hope soon.

My best January was in 2016. I had multiple dramas a week that month. Some of the best ones too.

Answer Me 1988 (last four episodes)
Cheese in the Trap
Signal
Six Flying Dragons
2D1N (variety show)

I had a show to watch everyday of the week that month, except Sunday. I even had a routine each week.

It was the best of times, and I haven't had he feeling since.

Whoo~! Happy Friday! January felt like such a long month.

I've lost count of how many times I have rewatched Hwayugi as well as my favorite parts in Hwayugi. I now remember why I stopped watching Korean dramas because when I find one that I like....I tend to get very attached lol.

I'm also watching Hyori's Home Stay still and it's so relaxing to watch after a day at work. Also caught up with the latest episode of Master in the House/All the Butlers. And how does Seung Gi's variety show have more shirtless scenes that his drama?! I need to see those abs while he's acting like Oh Gong. XD

Can I just say how far Korean drama watching has come? I remember my first Korean drama was Lovers in Paris and I'd watch the newest episodes with my parents when they rented video cassettes from the local (and only one in the state probably) Korean market. The only people I could talk to were my parents and fangirling is hard with them.

Now I can just go online to watch episodes that just aired a few hours ago. I can go on tumblr and see all the gifs, fanart, fanfiction, and meta discussions as well as come to this blog. I love technology. <3

Happy February!

Weekly Idol: BoA is the one and only girl crush! She is truly in a class of her own.

The rest of my post is dedicated to Just Between Lovers which ended this week. I have lots of thoughts, but one side note that really hit me was mom’s words to Moon Soo: “You and Yeon are each different. I’m not saying that one of you is more valuable than the other.” Above all, Moon Soo deserved to hear that. I had a friend whose brother was murdered and her mother told her that she wished it was her daughter and not her son who died. Unlike Moon Soo, my friend never heard her mother retract her words. Sang Man was so brave and showed his pure loyalty and love for Gang Doo. I can feel the dilemma it posed for Gang Doo, a catch-22. Being #2 on the organ donor list made the anonymous donor a way for the miracle Dae Ho wished for to happen, but I have an alternate ending. When Dae Ho told Moon Soo that her small build wasn’t suitable as a donor I thought it might be a set up for Joo Won to step in. Joo Won, who spent his entire adult life sorry to his father and to those his father was sorry to, would have been a perfect choice as a donor. It would have been cathartic for Joo Won – something tangible and meaningful and proactive. Of course Gang Doo would have fought it, but I think they could come to an agreement that wouldn’t hurt either’s pride. Korean generational burdens are so stuffy! Anyhoot, the ending for Just Between Lovers didn’t feel rushed or contrived. It took over ten years, but many people ultimately faced the pain that they had handled alone, some through anger, others through denial and blocked memories, and still others by lashing out and blaming others. Moon Soo’s words to Gang Doo really hit the nail on the head: “Why suffer alone? I told you suffering should be grouped together.” I want to attend the memorial on Dec. 11, 2018! Joon Ha is an amazing actor, more, more more!

Enjoy the weekend! ♥ owl

Question for everybody - what's the worst drama you have ever finished? I mean really finished, without much fast-forwarding or falling asleep.
The two candidates I can think of now were Blood and Doctor Stranger, but I suspect there were worse ones that I have (thankfully) forgotten.

This popped into my head immediately: Goong or Princess Hours.

I don't suffer through and finish many dramas nowadays because I watch it online on a computer where ffw is an option, but back then it was different, so my list is short but it has to be Goong.

I know its a sentimental favorite of many kdrama viewers, but I never got the hype and I watched it when it was new and hot, when I was a teeny bopper. I tried to get it and so I went to read the manwha which was a mistake (because the manwha was infinitely better and made me like the drama even less).

Yes me too, I rarely finish a drama I find bad now-a-days, but sometimes I will stick to something just because I am looking for a payoff (and I think that it can't possible end up being this bad), but then nothing happens and it does end up being just as bad as I'd feared.

So for me, the worst dramas I finished:
Goong/Princess Hours
Playful Kiss
Bride of the Water god
Cheese in the Trap
Secret Love
