So Ji-sub joins Shopping King Louis writer on new drama

So Ji-sub is heading back to dramaland with a new MBC show, yay! It’s been two years since his last drama (Oh My Venus), and I’m looking forward to seeing him back on our TV screens, even if this casting news comes with barely any information to go on. But fine, I’ll cling to your measly scraps of info anyway!

All we’ve got to go on is the drama’s title, My Secret Terrius, which makes me think of the Candy Candy manhwa story wherein Terrius (“Terry”) was a major love interest of the heroine. It’s an unusual enough name that I have to take the reference as deliberate, although that’s mostly speculation on my part.

I’m looking at this news with hopeful optimism because the project teams him with writer Oh Ji-young of the surprise comedy hit Shopping King Louis, which was a breath of fresh air with its wacky sensibility. That’s music to my ears, because while So Ji-sub made his name playing broody, intense, serious types (see: I’m Sorry, I Love You; What Happened in Bali), I’ve been loving his more lighthearted turn in recent years with shows like Oh My Venus and Master’s Sun. I have to respect whenever a stone-faced and serious actor sheds his image and embraces a little silliness.

Directing is PD Park Sang-hoon, who co-directed massive weekend hit Jang Bori Is Here as well as workplace comedy Radiant Office. Terius Behind Me is being planned as a Wednesday-Thursday drama to air in late August or early September on MBC.

Yay to So Jisub doing a comedy. He needs to do more of them. Master's Sun was great.

I loved him in MS. OMV not so much.
I want him to do a not-rich character. So sick of chaebols.

I used to stick with a drama until the very end, but Oh My Venus came and I broke my own rule as it was the first drama ever which I dropped. That's how uninteresting it was for me 😅

Same with me, Oh My Venus is my first dropped drama. I lost interest to it when So Jisub's character enter his family company.

Somehow I managed to sit through until the end but OMV was really bad...

As much as I love So Ji sub, I dropped Oh My Venus after the car accident.

I wanted to love that drama so bad after SJS-SMA's chemistry in their Gordanio campaign. But god that drama was bad with a capital B. I couldn't. No matter how much I tried I fell asleep, or my thoughts kept meandering and I finally gave up around ep 8. I still feel robbed. But it goes to show even chemistry can't save a badly written drama.

I will admit to really liking Oh My Venus. I know it wasn't a good show, and if you listed out specific complaints, I'd probably agree with all of them. But I loved it anyway. It struck a chord with me. Also put a bee in my ear about getting my thyroid checked, which has changed my life.

That's strange. It was quite some time ago, but I remember liking the drama. I don't recall much of the plot (which was probably the main problem?), but their chemistry was great. A lot of cute moments too. So I suppose it was good for a light rom-com. (At least for me.)

Maybe he'll be a rapper this time. Maybe Terius is his rapper name. Will you be okay with a chaebol whose secret dream is to become a rapper?

A geeeeenius rapper who is secretly a chaebol or a geeeenius chaebol who secretly raps.
Sounds like the perfect drama for idols . ><

How about a rapper whose secret dream is to become a chaebol? He'll be trying hard to chair important company meetings, but breaks into rap battles at the most worst moments.

I hope So Ji Sub will get a lead female as awesome as Gong Hyo Jin and show the viewers a burning chemistry like he did in Master's Sun

Master's Sun is drama comfort food for me! Even now listening to the OST still brings back the warm and fuzzies. T

These two actors make me love the doormat candy and tsundere chaebol so much! Every interaction between SJS and GHY feels like double rainbow explosion followed by raining unicorns.

This year is like the year of 40s something actors make a comeback in drama. From Misty, Shall We Kiss First , later we'll get Mr. Sunshine and now this. I'm not complaining.
Never watched Shopping King Louis, so I don't know what to expect from the writer. But I enjoyed SJS performance in Phantom and MS (though I didn't finish it). Hope it will be good.

It is the year of older and veteran actors returning or headlining dramas.
Adding to you list:
"Mother" with Lee Bo-young and Lee Hye-young
Kim Myung-min, Kim Hyun-joo and Ra Mi-ran in "Miracle..."
Son Ye-jin in "Pretty Noona."
Choi Kang-hee and Kwon Sang-woo in "Mystery Queen 2."
Park Shin-yang in "Lawyer Jo 2."
Lee Young-ae in "Different Dreams."
Jo Seung-woo, Moon So-ri and Lee Dong-wook in "Life."
Ryu Seung-ryong, Bae Doona, Joo Ji-hoon, Heo Joon-ho in "The Kingdom."
Jung Yu-mi in "Live"
"My Ajusshi" doesn't only have Lee Seon-kyun. but Oh Dal-soo and Song Sae-byeok.
"Suits" with Jang Dong-gun.
"Return" with Go Hyun-jung before she was fired. I think the show should be called "The Replacement."
Kim Ok-bin and Kang Ji-hwan in "Lesser God."
etc etc.
Honorable mention: Kim Ji Hoon's return to leading man status in "Rich Family's Son."

I hope to see college romance or more slice of life dramas for the younger actor.

Thank you the list! LOL for the "Replacement". I actually anticipated Return, but the first episode, which actually only 30 minutes, couldn't make me want to watch the second one.

You forgot Hyun Bin and the infamous Lee Byung Hyun ;)
More than half of the popular younger male actors are either in the military or preparing to enlist, so of course the return of the 'originals' needed to happen. And it's better this way. Maybe there will be less 'my oppa is better than yours' fighting in comment sections this year lol
Now I'm just praying for Jo In Sung and Jung Woo Sung to decide to delight our eyes on TV again.

I think Hyun-bin hasn't confirmed yet. He had an offer earlier for the high budget sci-fi drama "City of Stars."

Hyun Bin rejected City of Stars :( It's now offered to Lee Je-hoon
Seriously this project sounds interesting... I hope they finished casting soon.

2

Thanks Anne! I think it's a smart move . That drama is high risk.
He is doing well in films so I hope he sticks with it.

There is a lot of young talent, but maybe it's because I started watching kdramas in 2004/2005, there is something magical in seeing these folks in their 30s andd 40s and other actors who were getting big during my early years of kdrama watching. It's interesting to look at them now and think about all the different roles they've taken on over the past 10+ years and appreciating how they're still on screen.

Shopping King Louis is one of the romcom drama that I recommend. Seo In Guk is perfect for Louis role I can't imagine someone doing it. Nam Ji Hyun and Seo In guk chemistry is really good (But I shift Nam Ji Hyun to Ji Chang Wook more)
It's a funny drama.

I’ve always felt in the minority because I never really have been pulled in by So Ji-sub’s acting—I think he’s TOO stone-faced and serious for me, and I also never really got the appeal of Master’s Sun, either. But this gives me so much hope! I LOVE Shopping King Louis! I would love to love So Ji-sub as much as everyone else so I’m looking forward to this one. 💖

But hopefully magic is created a second time around with this writer. Looking forward to it 😊

The way their relationship developed was very natural and sweet, the main actors were great but the romance came from the good writing first.

I think he is a beautiful man inside out and I've watched his shows purely to fangirl over his looks.
I was touched by his devotion to his friend, Park Yong Ha. He paid for his entire funeral and took care of everything so his family doesn't stress over it.

I enjoyed his short but memorable cameo in "Sado" more than any of his full dramas.
I think he's gotten better with age and he works well with actresses around his age like Im Soo-jung, Gong Hyo-jin etc.
I'm looking forward to his new movie with Son Ye-jin "Be with You" based on Takuji Ichikawa's novel.

Any reference to Terius makes me think of Dream High, where Kang Sem was the Candy to Ma Doo Shik's loan-shark-turned-agency-president Terius. A So Ji Sub drama based off a lame joke from an iconic teen musical would be fine by me! But the chances of that are sadly not great.

Required fields are marked *

I liked it, too. And I agree with the comment, too.

The writer gave us a lot of set-ups that fizzled at the end:

1. The stalker who just went away after she had to move in with the guys

2. The mysterious things original boyfriend said to SJS at the hospital that we NEVER GOT TO KNOW

3. The crazytastic illness not-illness that was supposed to prevent his takeover of the company that... was overcome by just walking to a podium and saying, “I accept the job.”

4. The wasted year where SJS heals and recovers ALONE.

*Sigh*.

However:
- Great chemistry
- Lots of fun
- Best soundtrack to dance to on a Saturday morning while cleaning the house
- a sweet slice-of-life drama about two lonely people who find each other and find a wonderful love (even though it is cocooned in what appears to be a thriller, but isn’t)

Love SJS. Hope it is awesome!

When I read he wants to focus on movies when he reaches his 40s I was a bit sad, but so glad he didn't forget about dramaland.

But are we sure this is a comedy? If it is, I hope the actress they cast is very good at comedic scenes, Because SJS's comedic timing is very subtle and it will fly over people's heads, so someone with a more obvious comedic acting is required. I keep thinking Park Bo Young, but she's so tiny and baby-faced that she'll look like his niece. Well, as long as they stay away from idols or the likes of Shin Se Kyung or Jin Se Yeon (poor Goo Soo) we're good.
