Jeon So-min, Kim Jung-hyun courted for new MBC drama Time

Writer Choi Ho-chul of melodramas Mask and Secret is penning a new series for MBC called Time, and offers are currently out to Jeon So-min, who just wrapped on the tvN revenge drama Cross, and up-and-comer Kim Jung-hyun, who’s still headlining the JTBC coming-of-age comedy Woohoo Waikiki. It’s especially difficult to imagine Kim Jung-hyun taking on a serious role while he’s still bumbling about as one-third of the Waikiki manchild posse, but he also played a compelling villain in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People not too long ago, so I know he’s capable of carrying a much heavier role.

The new drama will be about a man who’s living his final days, who uses his remaining time to sacrifice everything and fight on behalf of the woman whose life was ruined because of him. There aren’t many details available about the hero, but Jeon So-min has been offered the role of a woman who has been left all alone in stopped time (I don’t think this is literal, since nothing else indicates time stopping). Because of a mother who has terrible taste in men and doesn’t earn money, she becomes the breadwinner for her family, and has developed exceptional survival skills.

She’s described as bright, sociable, fearless, and unable to tolerate injustice. She believes that loyalty can get her through anything, and though she had to drop out of college to pay for her younger sibling’s college tuition, she has trade certifications in every field imaginable. If Jeon So-min signs on, it’ll be a reunion for her with PD Jang Jun-ho, who was the second director on Aurora Princess, and also worked on Hotel King and My Spring Days, among other projects.

This writer’s work can sometimes veer too melodramatic for my taste, but I like these two actors and am interested to see Kim Jung-hyun tackle a leading role in a dark and intense project.

Time is set to follow MBC Wednesday-Thursday dramas Let’s Hold Hands and Watch the Sunset and Come Here and Hug Me, which puts the premiere sometime in July.

For this initial premise, I don't feel that interested, but... who knows. She must be older than him. I suppose, if it doesn't have any romance, I may be interested.

All I need is Kim Jung-hyun ❤ Although Jeon So-min would be my last choice for his leading female. I do liked her acting sometimes, but I don't think she is good enough for melodrama and heavier genre. I didn't watch the whole Cross, but she was probably among the weakest link among the casts. Kim Jung-hyun also still has many things to polish, I would love to see someone better and more experienced for his partner.

Anyway, this drama has a lot of potential to be an addictive makjang drama, so please cast good actors so I can still enjoy it and attach to the characters since the writing might cause me a headache. LOL.

i actually am excited to see KJH in a serious role cause it's what drew me to him although I'm loving him in waikiki currently. I'm a little wary about the melo-ness in this show especially bad endings (I'm been scarred enough) but I'm hoping it's the good kind of melo if they both sign on *fingers crossed*

"A man whose living his final days,............."
Looks like we're in for another tearjerker ending here.
I promised myself not to watch another serious drama this year after Misty so let's see.
If they can cast great actors with amazing micro-expressions that can move viewers, I'll definitely consider watching it.

I think Kim Jung Hyun has a lot of potential. What I really like is him trying different roles. Plus when a guy can make me laugh and isn't afraid of going all out for a comedic role, he's firmly in my bias list.

I adored So Min in 1% of Anything. Gave up on Cross after the 1st episode so I have no idea how she'll do in melo. I have a feeling she'll do just fine.

Melodramas aren't my thing but I hate to admit I did enjoy Secret. Well, it looks like Kim Jung Hyun is not content with making me cry tears of laughter, he may be making me bawl for real.

Not into melo nowadays but I hope there's comedy for KJH. Did not watch Rebel, but never thought he'd be a villain there opposite Kyun-sang's!

Kim Jung-hyun's turn in REBEL is what put him on my radar. It was a small but significant recurring role that made Mori a tragic foil to Gil-dong. KJH portrayed what could have been a stock villain as a young man who had gotten only bad breaks (one of them at the hands of Gil-dong himself) but was sympathetic and not totally irredeemable. Writer-nim had devised him as a complex, layered character, just as she had done for notorious tyrant Yeonsangun. KJH and Kim Ji-suk brilliantly brought to life their characters from the extreme ends of the social scale. During the show's run, Beanies were collectively jumping up and down that he would come around and do the right thing.

I would love to see Kim Jung-hyun in another saguek. He more than held his own against Yoon Kyun-sang's Gil-dong, which is saying something. They made a great pair of antagonists.

That said, I'm glad he's gaining experience in a wide range of genres.

I read his recent interview, he said he has learned acting from the age of 17 but wasn't too confident about himself. It took him almost 10 years to debut. This is such an inspiring story and I always love when actors have a humble beginning. For me, any actors who can shine in sageuk in their rookie projects definitely have some spot in my heart. Looking forward to see more of him in the future. It is a good thing that many leading actors are in army, it gives more chances to these rising actors to shine.

@seralovestteobokki,

Thanks for your synopsis of Kim Jung-hyun's interview. It really is inspiring that he stuck in out for nearly a decade before debuting. ;-)

More of Kim Jung Hyun is always welcome. Comedy, rom-com, melodrama, horror, sageuk, fantasy, slice of life and even medical (my most hated genre)...anything is fine as long as this handsome talented namja is gracing my screen. My only worry is that it's a MBC drama (known for their low ratings and unfortunately this drama is scheduled in July! Not the best season for melodramas)
I can't comment on Jeon Sun Min, never watched her works.

I usually don't pay attention to which station and I'm very unaware of ratings these days. DB used to have those weekly ratings updates. Now that they are gone, out of sight, out of mind unless I happen to chance upon the news.

Looks like MBC already gave up on their weekdays' drama rating and focus on weekend instead, which so far isn't that great either - Money Flower had a good rating thanks to the powerful veterans and good storyline too, My Husband is yet to achieve a good rating so far. Good thing is MBC finally gave more chances to the rising actors. I was surprised to see Jang Ki-young - Jin Ki-joo chosen as main leads in place of Suzy - Nam Joo-hyuk , acting-wise is definitely an upgrade but it's a downgrade in term of popularity which seem to be one of the key factors for these public broadcasters. I don't know how popular Jeon So-min in SK since she is also a part of Running Man, so maybe her popularity could help on the rating. I just hope it could be at least around 5%.

Secret was so good because of the intense chemistry of Hwang Jung Eum and Ji Sung. If ever the writer comes up with another drama like that, I hope they can cast pairings with at least good level of chemistry if not the same as Secret.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I want a break from Kim Jung-hyun. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, it's just that I don't think I want to see him again so soon, especially since he had Remembering First Love come out the other day. It's a bit similar to how I feel about seeing Junho again so soon. Too much of a good thing and all that. Wait a few months guys, more like towards the end of the year. I'll most definitely be missing you by then.

I get what you are saying. I feel that way about certain actors and actresses. At the same time, they are young up-and-comers, and I understand that they need to strike while the iron is hot (especially the young guys who are likely getting opportunities because so many actors are serving military duty right now).

I didn't think about how competitive it can be to get cast given the acting pool--Waikiki should have taught me that. I used to want to see my favourites back soon, but after a while I grew to appreciate new faces and what they brought to the table. I guess I'm thinking too much about the drama gods putting ratings first and getting who's hot as opposed to who's good for the role.

I feel like MBC is snatching away all the rising and promising actors and making them come on dramas just to fill in the slots since they have been the least popular channel for the last year? This better be good, since I am enjoying his stint so much on Waikiki. Also I agree with a commenter below, Jung In Sun deserves more roles too, :(. The girl is soo good.

Maybe because nowadays there are so many drama so one actor end up taking more than one drama each year and no big gap in between - not only from big 3 but also cables -tvN,OCN and jTBC which used to have only one or two drama each week but now have at least two drama each week. Not to mention, other cable like TV Chosun is also started to be active back. Rising actors these days have more luck with more options for them, if back to 5 years ago they had to compete with more estalished actors and it was harder for them. I also prefer to see some gap in each project, but he needs to strike while the iron is hot until he has his big breakthrough and be in hot demand, unless if he prefers to be under radar and do smaller type of projects first.

I'm not a big fan of Kim Jung hyun. He was disapointing in School 2017 and in Waikiki. He didn't make feel that his characters weren't only brat but had some depth. He's not very charimatic on the screen. In School 2017, Jang Dong Yoon was more impactful, the same with Lee Yi Kyung in Waikiki.

I feel the opposite. Jang Dong Yoon is not charismatic for me. He's not a leading man material. While Kim Jung Hyun has that appeal that majority of the viewers will love him even if he will play an evil role.

Is this 1% of Anything 3? Will this drama also turn her character in a hapless damsel in distress falling for an entiled controlling freak? NAHHH

Way to make us invested for 15 long episodes, only to kill the man, and love of the life of the heroine, possibly her only chance of true love[!] in life on the 16th one. -_-
