Park Shin-hye up to join Hyun Bin in Memories of the Alhambra

Apparently the universe just wants this pairing to happen, and you know what happens when you try to fight Fate in dramaland. A few months ago, Park Shin-hye (Doctors) and Hyun Bin (The Swindlers) were both courted for the new SBS drama Fox Bride Star (now called People of Incheon Airport), the latest from the PD of Gu Family Book and Secret Garden and the writer of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. But both actors ended up passing on the project, only to end up being offered the same new project right after it—tvN’s Memories of the Alhambra.

This is the new fantasy melodrama from writer Song Jae-jung of mind-bendy fantasy dramas W–Two Worlds, Nine, and Queen In-hyun’s Man, and PD Ahn Gil-ho of last year’s critically acclaimed conspiracy thriller Forest of Secrets. Hyun Bin has just signed on to star in the leading role, and Park Shin-hye’s reps have confirmed that she passed on Fox Bride Star and is now considering Memories of the Alhambra favorably.

The drama is about a CEO of an investment firm who goes to Granada, Spain on business and makes a visit to the Alhambra Palace. He stays at an old hostel run by the heroine, a former guitarist, and the two of them end up entangled in a strange situation. Earlier announcements described the project as a sci-fi action thriller involving an alternate reality through augmented reality games.

Hyun Bin’s character, Yoo Jin-woo, is an engineer with a natural-born talent for inventing games. He also has sharp business instincts, which he uses to become the CEO of an investment company. He’s competitive and adventurous and hates to lose even the smallest of bets. He suffers his greatest setback in the form of a friend’s betrayal just before his trip to Spain, where his life takes a sudden and unexpected turn. I can only imagine what crazy alternate/parallel/past/future universes this writer has planned, but I’m excited to find out.

Memories of the Alhambra plans to air later this year on tvN.

Yes I'm so excited. This drama sounds way more interesting than the other two projects she was offered. It's also really different from what she has done. I really hope she accepts this.

And I lol-ed when I saw the news as well. Poor SBS, getting both their potential actors snatched by tvN. I wonder if its intentional.

I'm in for the writer and PD, not matter who the leads are.
Of course, having a really pretty female lead doesn't hurt -- but it also doesn't do much to separate this show from every other kdrama ever.

She’s not just pretty, she’s actually got some skills. All this drama needs is well written plot and characters. A well written female character. the success of the drama will be defined by that. It’s sad to see how some people still consider the female actress as a pretty prop.

Nope. She debuted at the age of 13 as a child actress and has been an actress ever since. However, like Lee Jun Ki, she sings, dances etc. on her fan meetings and that’s just her hobby

You cant define Hyun Bin in just one role. He is one of the most versatile Korean actor around. Check ALL his previous drama and also his movies, this man can adapt to ANY role and bring a new flavor in it. I'm very glad he is coming back to dramas, he was missed. Give this man a good script and a good female lead and he creates magic! Unfortunately his last drama had neither so it flopped.

Try 'Come Rain, Come Shine'. Mind you, it's an indie movie in which nothing happens, but it's a different kind of character for Hyun Bin for sure. Very little action/dialogue, a lot conveyed through lingering glances (from both characters in what is essentially a two-character movie).

My hang-up with this drama is more that dramas with PSH always bore me (her choices are just not up my alley and her acting doesn't move me). The PD is great, not sure about the writer – I did like some of those other dramas quite a bit, but the female characters in those aren't really what sold them to me.

Well... i never read articles about anybody!!! Ha ha... I only read the few bits we get from here in DB.
But by the way, I don't have anything against PSY. Good for her to have the chance to act different roles. She will gain experience... 🙃
But by the way, in this case, I am sorry for her, to make a couple with Hyun Bin for a drama. He is too old for her, I think, and also, he is ugly... 😂😂😂😂😂

5

javinne! We have been friends for so long but I have to seriously question your eyesight! HB ugly??? 🤓

0

Hyun Bin Ugly? It's the stupidest thing I've seen, check those eyes are wrong.

0

In answer to @bbstl and @carol:
Sorry to say hyun bin is ugly. That was a mistake, I apologize. I kept on searching for tons of his pictures, and he is not necessarily ugly. He is also not attractive (to my taste🙄) 😂😂 but he is not ugly. You guys are right.
Now, I have seen his acting and for me it doesn't convey anything, but that is only me, because my taste is different. My opinion is not that important anyway...
You guys have fun with this drama when it airs 😄

0

@javinne
😂Thank you for rephrasing your comment! I hope I like this show, I think it sounds like a crazy story but I will watch anything for my HB.

4

Thank you for re-phrasing Binnie being "ugly"...I sometimes think that appearance has almost nothing to do with it. The intense slow gaze with which he first really 'sees' Gil Ra Im fighting as a stuntwoman in Secret Garden is seared into my memory, like...forever.

0

Gosh, it's extremely rude of you to say HB is ugly. You shouldn't go around calling people ugly, it reflects badly on yourself. Next time go take a look in the mirror before you call anyone ugly.....

0

@abz008
I apologised before about it, calling hyun bin "ugly".
And just to clarify it once more: you cannot feel it because this is written and you don't know me, but after I wrote him ugly, I added lots of laughing emoticons. I was actually jocking. In my culture we call each other names very easily, but it doesn't mean we feel that way, it is just about humor, because we all laugh about it. Also, maybe in my language the translated word for "ugly", doesn't have a strong but a comical connotation... it really depend on the context and the intonation.
Even though I studied linguistics, I transferred oral language with written language and ended up offending some. I apologise again for that.
Anyway, no, of course he is not ugly. And for his wife if he is married, he should be the most handsome men on earth.
I think he looks average. But that is ok.

Lots of greetings for you! 😊

0

Are you kidding me? How old are you? He doesn’t always photograph well but he’s hot! Go watch some of the clips from Worlds Within on YouTube. He has the best profile of all the K actors especially when he’s lying in bed gazing at Song Hye-Kyo. He plays all genres well although the scripts are sometimes lacking. I’m an American fan by the way.

0

@kdramasfan3, i am old enough to be Hyun bin's partner, and I am from south America. Maybe a cultural thing?? I still don't find him not even handsome.
I like Kim Soo hyun and Seo In guk, I like Ji Chang wook, I am crazy about Jung Hae in. I consider all these men very handsome... Also Lee Jeong suk, Park Hyung shik, Nam Joo hyuk, Ji Soo, Yoo Seung ho and probably some others I don't remember now, but I am 100% sure I don't find Hyun bin attractive, not even a tiny bit, LOL 😂😂😂😂
Sorry for that.

If you look at the photos where they are put together, you do not see much difference in age, he looks very young ... even though he was much older than her, what is the problem? So are the stories if the stories are of an older man with a young woman because that's how it is done, if they want me to work with a pure child who devotes himself to childish Doramas, it seems so stupid to complain about age difference that is so childish.

I like most of her dramas and have the utmost respect for her, but the writing of her female characters leave a lot to be desired. Queen In-Hyun’s man has the most active female heroine, but she existed to serve the male lead. HHJ’s character started out very assertive in W but inevitably took the backseat and became a damsel in distress. I think that’s what disappointed me the most about W. I want to get excited about this drama because QIHM and Nine are some of my favorite dramas of all time, but there it is again: the male lead is fleshed out in a short character description while the heroine is such an afterthought. It kind of upsets me coming from a female sci-fi writer at this point. She’s my Korean JK Rowling, lol.

"Queen In-Hyun’s man has the most active femaleheroine, but she existed to serve the male lead."
I disagree about QIHM. They both served each other. She saved him many times, intentional and otherwise. Sure, he had a duty which he swore an oath to keep, to protect and Serve the queen. Its hard to match him and that department on the part of the heroine, been in the modern age and all.
But, she had her own thing going for her and she was dedicated to it, not with the kind of severity and absolution of the hero, but still.

I haven't watched W or Nine so can't comment on those.

She was never written to be as active and aware as he was in any part of the plot or conflict. It was more like she’s kind, sweet and in the right place, at the right time. They were adorable together, but she’s not that distinguishable of a character on her own.

Screenwriting and bookwriting are so different so I don’t know how much subtext a script can provide, but I was remarking on the disappointing fact that two successful women, who’ve broken the glass ceiling in their fields still cannot write a proper female vehicle. JK Rowling has been disappointing in other aspects too from her retconning her characters for PR only to her shoddy politics. She is not inimitable.

It’s not enough when you are contributing to the terrible statistic of having male protagonists make up 89% of films. What other strong or standout female protagonist has she written aside from Hermione? Do they stand on their own or do they exist to be props for her male protagonists?

0

@oppasslyfox for me its enough that she herself is a headstrong person.. that's a real person.. i don't expect a person to be perfect, but i like that people can take lessons from her life on owning their own life.. poverty, fighting for success, what failure means and coming out of it..

hermoine or your lead from Misty.. they are just characters in a fictional world..

i haven't seen rowling as a woman to not exist for herself.. so not sure what you are talking about..

@stories.. they are stories.. and whether you like it or not, different kind of stories exist in this world with their own set of readers.. a bedtime story does not have to be about a woman saving the world , always

Hopefully this drama will deliver so they don't end up regretting their choice to reject that Incheon drama, especially if that drama is more successfuI. Nine was one awesome drama which I have yet to finish, [the visuals look a bit old, which is my only pet peeve lol], but I was totally onboard with the mystery of the incense sticks. Whereas W lost me on the plot when the female protagonist falls in love with an imaginary character, a boy from a webtoon created by her father. :/ It just didn't seem like a fantasy story I could trust. Anyway, this better be good!

I like Park Shin Hye but I don't really feel she is the suitable candidate for this role - I mean this is a role of a guitar playing heroine running a hostel in Spain. I was always picturing older actress with cool and carefree boho vibe like Gong Hyo Jin or Jung Yoomi. But then again, my opinion is strictly based on the brief description of the female lead.
This drama sets to be grand and hype now that Hyun Bin is attached to it.

Personally I didn't find KGE was terrible in Goblin, she nailed it when she was required to emote. My problem was how she did all those aegyo / cutesy scenes because they looked forced and cringe worthy, instead of adorable and charming. If she does drama in the future, I hope she will take more serious roles, melodrama, or maybe something like her role in CITT. I do agree the writing is also a problem.

2

Required fields are marked *

Agree on the aegyo scenes. Some girls are good at it, some just aren't.

KGE was really good in CITT. Recently I caught a trailer of CITT the movie and I was struck by how different Oh Yeon So and KGE's portrayals are. I like OYS in some of her projects so I'm not one of her detractors. However comparing both takes on Seol, I appreciate that KGE made Seol unique and different.

3

I haven't watch CITT the full movie, but just some trailers. Oh Yeon-seo is not so bad herself, but because we have watched a wonderful performance by Kim Go-eun, it's hard not to notice the differences. Let's say CITT drama had Hong Seol played by the original actress offered before Kim Go-eun, then maybe we could say Oh Yeon-seo's version is better. Oh Yeon-seo was decent in Hwayugi, but her character was outshine by other active characters so people didn't really appreciate her character. Honestly I would love to see no more damsel-in-distress type heroine in kdrama, it's a pity when the actresses get the hatred due to the weak character even when they give good performance.

2

I do agree. No disrespect to Park Shin Hye. She has been around since she was a child but I'd prefer Honey Lee or Gong Hyo Jin.

This usually only happens in a drama, you know, when the leads' character as an actor didn't get the role in a big-most-anticipated project but they ended up working together in a smaller one, but amazingly the project was more popular than the first one. Same different.

And I say, go for it, Park Shin Hye. I think many people want to see her out of her comfort SBS-melodrama zone. I'm not her fans, but I'll absolutely watch it if she accept the role. It's the time for her to make a comeback in a great drama

I think this writer has interesting ideas, she just needs to make sure story stays coherent and finish strong.

I can't see Hyun Bin and PSH together. That's why I'd rather they focus less on romance.

I have not watched HB for ages since Secret Garden. I can't remember what he's like! I can only say he's good looking and charismatic. PSH is a casualty from Heirs i.e. that one project seared my impression of her in my mind. I think that's why I cannot finish her dramas. It's not PSH's fault but all her co-stars looked slimey to me. Yes, that includes Kim Rae Won. Doctors ruined him for me. I am afraid HB might suffer the same fate. My fav drama of Park Shin-hye still remain Tree of Heaven, maybe because she was so convincing in that role in such young age, sadly I wasn't really able to like her in any other drama. I think she isn't endearing enough as a romantic heroine, not that bad but I have watched many other better actresses in this romance genre. Maybe she should do thriller and non-romance genre after this with some kickass characters. Wiith her popularity, I think she can afford to be more selective.

I too think that if she takes on a non-romance or non-dramatic type of roles, I might see her differently. It's unfair but after Heirs, I don't want to watch her kiss or cry. Sounds crazy?

DB is possibly the only place I can voice this about PSH because I'd be labelled a hater/oppa fangirl/other actress' fan elsewhere. I'm not and PSH isn't the only actor I have a less than a neutral feeling towards. Still, I don't think I have ever written an actor off. I remember I couldn't stand Lee Yu Bi in Scholar Who Walks The Night but I found her funny and quite cute in the current airing drama You Who Forgot Poetry.

3

I actually found the romance in Nine sooooooo annoying that I couldn't watch it until the end. Regardless of how interesting the story was.

I can't believe how young PSH is. She was only 19 when she did You're Beautiful. It's time for her now at 28 to do a different genre and I hope she'll do well.

QIHM was definitely the writer's strongest and most root-for-able romance. The romances in Nine and W just can't compare and seem rather weak in comparison, I don't blame you. I had hopes for the romance in W but it kind of fell flat down the road instead of building.
I don't know if there had ever been a role of Park Shin Hye's that I really, really liked. It hasn't happened yet, so maybe that's why I have a hard time picturing her for this? There hasn't been anything where I've been like "Oh man, this would be great for PSH!" I'm never thinking of her.

Very unlikely. I think everything this writer has written has had romance in it.

I like romances but I think their is a distinct lack of dramas without romance in them and I would personally like to see more stay away from the romance plotlines.

I'm from Spain and I'm beyond exited by this proyect.
I'v been visiting the Alhambra for decades and it's one of the most beatiful places ever, it fills you with wonder.

The writer is on a spanish influence bender. "W" was inspired by a Goya painting from "El Prado" in Madrid . Everytime I visit that museum, I remember that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Devouring_His_Son

I just hope they shoot soon, because the heat can be overwhelming from May on.

W was inspired by Saturn Devouring His Son?! Woah! I had no idea! That’s so cool. I studied in Madrid last year and spent quite some time in the Prado. Loved that it was free for students.

I sadly never got to visit the Alhambra (poor trip planning on my part when I went to Andalucía) but this drama has me excited! I wonder if they’ll film in other places besides Granada.

W was inspired by that painting of Goya... I didn't know that. I've seen the painting in El Prado and also have visited Alhambra,Toledo,Cordoba and the rest of Moorish Spain. Beautiful...but what has been done to the majestic Cordoba Mosque simply broke my heart.

First time I saw The Mezquita, I thought the same thing.
If you consider history of religion is extraordinary that it has survived, by mergin with another faith.
Think that on that site there was a cristian temple (http://www.mezquitadecordoba.org/en/history-mosque-cordoba.asp ), that was leveled to build the mosque, (as is the natural flow of historic events), but the mosque and the most sacred parts were preserved intentionaly.
Think how much easy would have been to build a cathedral on a city centre without preserving a whole timber decorated building surrounding it.
Some serious love, and money, must have gone on that proyect.

This is an interesting pairing. One, I think, that I will need to see to really believe. I just have a hard time picturing. I have enjoyed the writers work before (even with flaws) so hopefully we will get an awesome storyline. W crashed and burned at the end and yet I was glued to my screen. So, even if this show isn't written perfectly I trust it will still be cracktastic! Hahahaha

I have absolutely nothing against her as a person, but their is just something about her acting that I really don't like and find very unappealing. I've seen 6 dramas with her and I've only ever liked her in 1 (Pinocchio). I absolutely love You're Beautiful but I can't rewatch it because she was awful in it and I can't handle watching it again because of her.

If other people like her that's totally fine, but I personally think she is a bad actress and, yes, super overrated.

I have absolutely nothing against Lee Jong Suk as a person, but *there is something about his acting that I really don’t like and find very unappealing. I’ve seen all of his dramas and movies (yes, Doctor Stranger too) and I only ever liked him in 1 (IHYV). I love Shin Hye Sun to moon and back and I feel like LJS will ruin The Hymn of Death. if other people like him that’s totally fine, but i personally think he is a bad actor and, yes, super overrated :)

And that's totally fine! I'm am not quite sure why Lee Jong Suk is being brought into this conversation as he has nothing to do with this new announcement but everyone is entitled to their opinions :)

4

Oh wait.. I just realized it's probably because of my icon. Did I upset you because I don't like PSH so you thought you would try and upset me or something? That's kinda childish if so and I really hope that isn't what you were trying to do. I personally don't think LJS is the greatest actor out their I just find him more cute then anything and just had a picture laying around to use as an icon. And even if I thought he was the best actor ever I wouldn't take offense to you not liking him as an actor. I accept the fact everyone has their own opinions and tastes.

4

@TrinPie That’s fine, my friend, we all have different opinions and we have the right to express it. When I usually dislike some actor’s acting, I usually stay quiet about it and instead if I have something positive to say, I say it. LJS and some other actors like Woo Do Hwan (who seems to be popular these days) is not my cup of tea but that doesn’t mean I’ll say that them signing into a drama will ruin the drama when I don’t even know how they are going to be like. My point is, PSH gets way too much hate and she doesn’t deserve that. Praise the ones you like and move on if you dislike.

5

And you know better than the script writer that these actresses are a better fit? Hilariously tragic. If PSH ever accepts this, I will see when this drama succeeds, I will see the next excuse i-fans will use to dismiss Park Shin Hye. Yet again.

@Zanna omg, honey lee! girl--I never even knew about her until I saw her in Rebel and I was not expecting anything at all but.she.blew.me.away. From the first scene with her & Yoon Kyun-sang I was THERE FOR THE IT. Probably the most heartbreakingly sweet scenes I've ever seen in a kdrama was when they were walking down that path and she sang while he played the drums. they complimented each other soo well, I was blown away. So much so it took me 3/4 into the drama to get on board the main romance (very reluctantly I might add). heh. Dont even get me started on Park so-dam too---why isn't she in more dramas? She's so good!!

Lee Min Ho saved Heirs? What a joke. Thanks for the laughs. First i-fans said that Krystal and Minhyuk saved Heirs and that Krystal was better at acting than PSH and then came She’s So Lovable and people shut up about her acting. Now you are saying LMH saved Heirs? Literally, he was the one who ruined Heirs with bad writing too. I can’t with oppar fangirls who will praise the most mediocre male stars and then go on and attack female stars. Just say you hate her and move on. I’d understand if you were a disappointed ex-shipper or a fan of an other actress who then projects their frustrations to PSH because apparently it’s PSH’s fault that she gets role offers. Never mind the fact that she worked hard her way up to the top since her child actress days. Stay salty.

I'm not the one fangirling here hum? You are the one getting mad over Park Shin Hye.....

Better characters? You call ABUSIVE Kim Tan and Choi Young Do better characters? KWB character I understand, his character had character growth and he created a second lead syndrome, completely understandable. Kim Tan literally dragged and assaulted his supposed loved one and the writer Kim Eun Sook made PSH’s character so passive and miserable and made it look like Lee Min Ho’s character was some God’s grace to poor Cha Eun Sang. You call Kim Tan a better character? You blame PSH for Kim Eun Sook’s shitty writing? Just admit you’re a misogynistic oppa fangirl and move on.

2

@megan Just because someone might like a male actor counterpart better then a female one doesn't automatically make them misogynistic. For all you know there are other dramas where they love the actress but hates the actor. It honestly hurts feminism when words like this are thrown around without any basis behind it.

I get you love PSH and want to defend her and that is totally fine! We all have our passions and likes, but please don't result to insults because others may have a different opinion. Let's keep the discussions civil.

Heirs was all around awful but that was almost entirely because of the writing. I don't think even my favorite actresses could have saved the drama. Heirs didn't do any of the actors a service.

2

Anyways, I wont be adding to this conversation anymore. I expressed my opinion and explained why I have that opinion and unintentionally upset someone which was not what I wanted to do. It's awesome you love an actress this much to defend her and if she accepts the role then I am thrilled for you! I may not want her in the role but I wont be salty for those who do want her in.

1

@TrinPie I am not hurting feminism, I’m stating facts. If you hate on an actress for something which is out of her control (the writing of her character) yet simultaneously praise a male actor who wasn’t exactly great either, who played a highkey stalker-ish obsessive and abusive character, then it's highly likely that the said person has internalized misogyny. Anyway, I was not replying to you but someone else. It seems you agree that the abusive Kim Tan was a good character since you liked commenter A.’s comment which makes this debate with you useless.

2

I had to go look. I have finished 1 of her dramas, Flower Boy ND, and 1 movie, Royal Tailor. I have only seen Hyun Bin in MNIKSS .

Hope it’s bright and sunny with flamenco guitar, tasty food and Sangria.

And most importantly, Hyun Bin and Park Shinhye are both attractive as well as decent and huge actors! Just need the writing to be good. But for sure, it will be exciting and suspenseful if W if anything is go by.

Hyun Bin is one example of ageing like fine wine. I used to find him so thin and scrawny looking in Secret Garden, but he's looking hot lately.
Park Shin Hye... she still looks like she's in her early twenties when she wears matronly dresses, but I saw her pictorials and girl can look hot.
I say, they match well visually.
