Ahn Jae-hyun up to court Seo Hyun-jin for Beauty Inside drama

Ahn Jae-hyun

Ahn Jae-hyun (Reunited Worlds) is the newest name to be announced as a possible lead for Beauty Inside, the anticipated drama adaptation of the sentimental romance film of the same name that is looking to air on JTBC later this year.

The original movie starred Han Hyo-joo as the leading lady, with a veritable Who’s Who of stars putting in face time as her lover, a man who found himself in a new body every day (among those actors: Park Seo-joon, Yoo Yeon-seok, Lee Jin-wook, Chun Woo-hee, Ueno Juri, Seo Kang-joon, Lee Bum-soo, Park Shin-hye, Lee Dong-wook, and Go Ah-sung). The drama series takes the general premise of the movie, but with a few major changes: This time, it’ll be the female lead who jumps into a different body every day, while the male lead will play the unchanging love interest. Moreover, rather than turning into a new person with every transformation (and never having a “home” body), the change only happens once a month.

The role Ahn Jae-hyun has been offered is of Ryu Eun-ho, a quiet and pure young man who wants to become a priest. He’s known our heroine since childhood, and helps keep her secret once he finds out about it. The offer has already gone out to Seo Hyun-jin (Temperature of Love) to play the main character, which would be wonderful since she’s a great actor with a talent for drawing us into her characters. Plus, if she accepts, she’d be reuniting with director Song Hyun-wook, with whom she worked on Oh Hae-young Again, a major breakthrough role for her.

Seo Hyun-jin, Lee Min-ki, Lee Da-hee

Lee Min-ki (Because This Life Is Our First) has also received an offer to join the cast to play an airline executive who’s in love with the heroine, while Lee Da-hee (Mystery Queen 2) is up to play a woman in love with Ahn Jae-hyun’s character.

I have to say my initial reaction to the plot changes is disappointment because the original worked so well (who else yelled “Cop out!” upon reading the description?). Moreover, the revolving door of changing bodies was all the more poignant for its bittersweetness: She loved him in all his forms, even though there was no anchor body — it was the essence of him that she loved. It was a whimsical premise that led to some really thoughtful and heartfelt moments, and I worry that this drama version feels way too safe to explore all the meaning that was baked into the original — you’re essentially making her a werewolf, which is a different problem altogether, and one that feels so manageable. Where’s the heartbreak in reducing the dilemma to a menstrual cycle? I suppose I’ll still hold on to hope that the drama will be effective, but I can’t help feeling sad.

Beauty Inside is aiming to air on JTBC later this year.

Many great name come for this remake. I will wait to watch it if TV cable would pick it up, I love this movie version, and as long as it keep the right direction from the original it would be great.

Once a month? So there won't be Park Seo Joon forcing himself to stay up because he doesn't want to wake up as not-Park Seo Joon anymore? The heroine can totally time her new body like a menstrual cycle. Even though I like the change from the male lead to the female lead since there will be more actresses cameos with the occasional actors.

By the way, Park Seo Joon was my favorite Woo Jin. Maybe because we spent the most time with him, but my butterflies had butterflies. The movie turned too melo by the end for me, though.

What? Park Seo Joon was in this? Sounds like I need to rewatch it! I remember Lee Dong Wook, Yoo Yeon Suk, and Nam Joo Hyuk, but not PSJ. When did he appear?

Park Seo Joon was the "main" Woo Jin. He was the one Han Hyo Joo fell for and became depressed about when he suddenly ghosted her.

Nam Joo Hyuk was not in The Beauty Inside. Might you be thinking about someone else?

Oh, I know who I was thinking of, it was Lee Hyun Woo.

Ehhh... he's not really lead material. If Seo Hyun Jin accepts, the talent distribution between the leads would be really uneven... I feel like especially with this material you would need a really strong emotional actor.

Changing the body swapping to once a month is TOTALLY a cop out, but logistically it's probably better for both the production side of things and story-wise for a multi-episode format.

I think my main question about this drama is what does being the "lead" really mean? Because multiple people are going to be playing the character, right? Is the acting duty going to be split evenly between SHJ (if she accepts) and 3-5 other actors. Will we as the audience always "see" SHJ as the main character, while the other characters in drama "see" someone else. I guess that's a stylistic way they could get around it filming wise, but I feel like some of the impact of the body changing would be lost :/. Will the main character wake up in different gender bodies like they did in the film?

I'm also a little disappointed that the Oh Hae Young PD is helming this :( I feel like he struck gold with that drama & SHJ as the lead, but his projects afterwards have been very lackluster that I'm not confident in his work anymore. He has a style of filming that I feel is a little pervasive & that almost undermines the writer in terms of how the narrative is influenced.

I don't have much faith in the PD, if for nothing else but the choice to cast AJH over LMK as the lead. For me Lee Min-ki is a much better pairing for SHJ visually and in their maturity as actors. I can totally imagine LMK portraying the quiet and pure person with aspiration in priesthood, but perhaps he is not as young as the new story demands. But if they can change the basic premise of the original story......

The character descriptions sound like they are up for totally different parts -- Lee Min-ki for the love interest, Ahn Hae-hyun for the best friend.

Upon second look the article does seem to indicate that AJH plays the best friend character to the heroine. I think I was confused by the "courting" part of this article's headline which of course, in the movie, BFF Lee Dong-Hwi does not do. 😅

But I should know better, this is Dramaland after all. Instead of a potentially awesome sismance for our heroine, let's throw in a second male lead who loves her, AND another woman who loves him.

Sigh. After getting more info about the concept changes, I hope LMK doesn’t take it.

And I thought making the female lead change instead had so much potential, too, for even more interesting commentary on beauty standards and such. I really liked that change in the concept! But the other changes...? Hmmm....

I shouldn’t judge a drama before it airs, but... I’m disappointed.

Maybe it will prove me wrong!

But I get you, mindy, I feel exactly the same. If they will change so much the main premise, it is like, I can't be interested anymore.
Also, Ahn Jae-hyun is ok but not that extraordinary as an actor.
And I really don't like Han Hyo-joo😅.
Good so, it is a drama less to watch!!! 😂

I agree. Reading the concept here I'm no longer very interested. LMK would be wasted as an airline executive generically in love with the heroine. And I'm not saying this because I think he should be the lead, because first/second lead debates bore me, rather because this sounds so blah.

Exactly. And honestly, when I first read this article it didn’t even register to me that Ahn Jae-hyun was being offered the first lead. Lee Min-ki’s consideration was announced first months ago.

Then I read the article again and became confused and more disappointed.

Yeah... if there’s one thing that Min-ki’s projects and roles aren’t, it’s boring. But this sounds boring and uninspired.

I don’t care if I have to wait longer for his next drama. Min-ki, please don’t take this. Please.

You know, I love Lee Min-ki in rom-coms, and I sometimes jokingly say that I selfishly want him to do rom-coms forever and ever, but I would actually love for him to do something darker and grittier after BTLIOF. Especially because every rom-com since BTLIOF, with the exception INAR, hasn’t tugged me in the same way, so I’m just not feeling like rom-coms lately.

I remember watching the movie after seeing Han Hyo-Joo in W and loving it. There's a book called Every Day by David Levithan that basically has the exact same premise: the main character changes bodies every day, and ultimately his love interest loves him for his soul or essence. I'm not sure if the movie is inspired by the book, but for both the book and movie the most insightful part was the changing of bodies EVERY DAY and the deep internal struggle character has with accepting himself. Then drama version does sound like a cop out, but we never know what could happen. Optimism!

Also! The book was ALSO made into a movie (English), and then there's ALSO going to be an American remake of the Korean movie. Now I really feel like making a drama out of this sort of worn out concept is a little extra.

I'm a vain girl, n the picture JB put in this article do him justice so I'm good lol.

didn't watch anything AJH has played (blood n reunited world skip big time), only YFAS.
I only know he was very lucky, played small part in YFAS but get "main lead" straight up from oven paired with GHS n get married after that.

I know Q7D is later than Marriage not dating but I haven't watched it ^^' , so my last drama with him is quite old back to 2014.

AJH role was small in YFAS so like Sera said he's ok for second lead but maybe not yet for first lead , but that's only based on reunited worlds, hoping his acting skills will improve.

1

Pffffft. Oh well, I'll try to just enjoy this drama for what it is, even if the way you just described the changes makes me crack up, lol. It could still be an interesting show. Then again, About Time also could have been "interesting" but instead it's just perplexing. Hopefully the writer will find a way to keep the complexity of the original. My love has definitely cooled for this PD, even with my enduring love for MnD, but I'm interested to see him take on a premise that's more inspired again, since he does do better with those.

That said, I'm really not excited about Ahn Jae-hyun as the lead in this kind of drama. Now this would be a role I'd love for Yeon Woo-jin, even if his recent drama with this PD didn't go well. Really though, just anyone skilled at grounding a romance in genuine emotion would be preferable.

Where’s the heartbreak in reducing the dilemma to a menstrual cycle?

The movie was so fun to watch especially when he transformed into a little boy and she gave him so makgeolli in the yogurt drink 😂. So it does feel like a cop-out since it only happens once a month. I wonder if it'll still have it's touch as the all-endearing love that crosses physical appearances because the movie (with all its cameos) had a great point about the emotional, inner aspect of caring about someone.

It's not a remake now. They just took a concept from the movie and the whole premise has been changed.
I wish Lee Min ki rejects it. Ahn Jae hyun's acting is comparatively improving but still he's not a lead material yet.
Fingers crossed. (waiting for drama fairies to hear my prayer)

I don’t understand why they had to add two more characters to make a love square to artificially add conflict when the original story is already compelling enough with questions on whether one can truly love someone else based on their personality ONLY? In the real world, it’s often a combination of the perfect package in our significant others, so this tension is great in a fictional work.

Also, the casting is just so weird. Who would cast Lee Min Ki as second fiddle to Ahn Jae Hyun? Way to tell Lee Min Ki he has no money / clout / popularity to become a first lead when it should be based on acting skills. The female casting is okay, even though I haven’t seen a breakout performance from Lee Da Hee yet. Seo Hyun Jin? Her name is enough for me to sample a drama.

I greatly disliked every role Seo Hyun-jin's ever taken so I'm already more than annoyed with this remake but... wow way to ruin an interesting premise. No wonder the creators feel the need to add a boring love square to the equation, what sort of conflict is left when the changes happen once a month? Kpop stars change hairstyles more often than that :/
I loved the movie. The way it was shot, what it had to say on female sexuality, on mental illness, on transsexuality, love and the Human Experience in general. Why adapt something when you can't improve the original in any way?

Thanks for the casting news, Javabeans. In the wake of THE GREAT SEDUCER, I'm feeling especially gun-shy of film remakes. Like you, I have reservations about turning THE BEAUTY INSIDE into a drama. The original concept is one that could only work in a film, or perhaps a very short drama.

The inevitable finality of each of the protagonist's iterations made for both heartbreak and a searching examination of what constitutes the recognizable spirit of a human being. Seeing him in various personas who speak different languages addressed the filters of ethnicity and culture that are part and parcel of the human condition. His occasional gender switches were also telling, with the added aspect of his experiencing first-hand how problematic external appearance is for many women, not least because of sexual harassment. It reminded me of Robert Heinlein's sci-fi novel I Will Fear No Evil.

In the film, the protagonist's daily deadline, coupled with an ever-changing form, underscored the nerve-wracking unpredictability his girlfriend had to deal with. His attempt to retain his recognizable appearance by staying awake was as touching as it was doomed to failure. Her fidelity to the person clothed in a changing facade came with a hefty price tag that would not have been levied had she been a man.

"you’re essentially making her a werewolf"

We all know that werewolves just have to sequester themselves behind bars at the full moon for all to be right with the world. Maybe the monthly temporary switcheroo will occur on an unpredictable basis and without prior warning. I hope she's not on the bus or subway when that happens.

A drama format would, however, afford an opportunity to address one of the movie's secondary plots: the heritability of shape-shifting. I found it an intriguing premise.

It deals with so much more than what the korean movie offered to show.
I was excited to see how the reverseal of role will effect the storyline and how the community will view a guy in love with a new woman daily, sadly they dropped the essence of the idea by introducing an anchor body. Oh well.

Oh another possible work of SHJ! I’m excited! But.. after the Temperature of Love which really let me down.. (plot-wise), my initial feeling was that I wasn’t very sure if this will turn out well. But contrary to many comments here, I somewhat have a feeling that the pairing of SHJ and this PD might make another great hit. I haven’t really seen AJH’s work before so I couldn’t really comment on his acting. A couple of things I remember about him are 1. His (too RED and plump) lips, 2. He married SHJ’s best friend, 3. He played a second lead role in Cinderella with the 4 knights and 4. That he is part of a show named Journey to the West.

My fingers crossed for this show to do well!

As someone who also got married young, I know its wrong for me to say this but I feel like he got married too young. I remember him in You're All Surrounded and thinking, "Oh, he'll be a heartthrob." Unfortunately, in the entertainment world, marriage can make things difficult for a leading actor, male or female.

That said, maybe having him take on several different love interests in one drama is exactly what he needs. It could show his versatility and ability to have chemistry with anyone. So, this might be a great vehicle for him.

I wonder how else they could have adapted it for TV. Out of all the movies I have seen adapted, this one seems particularly suitable more for a movie (time-wise) than a 16 episode drama. It would have been interesting if they had gone 16 actresses in 16 episodes and they all had to have one identifiable characteristic that would paint them, without words, as the MC. It would have been a fascinating experiment to see all these women embody the same character. Alas, they have gone for the safe route.

And, yes, it does feel like a 'cop out', but I guess they kind of had to for budget reasons. Which, again, says to me that the whole endeavor is a bad idea.

It was such a joy when the casting news of SHJ and LMK came out and now AJH is a party-pooper. Booooo. I would rather him sticking with his variety show, NJTTW or selling his personal life with the wife on screen instead of ruining a drama again.

Anyway, he's so famous for his foot acting, I wonder if you can read in chinese, there are plenty of news discussed about his poor acting which ruined dramas. You can read from weibo, majority was hoping him to drop the drama kekekekeke delulu fans.
