Esom up to romance Seo Kang-joon for The Third Charm

Esom, Seo Kang-joon

Esom, who made an impression last year in the tvN rom-com Because This Life Is Our First, is looking to fill the leading lady role in an upcoming drama titled The Third Charm. Given that she’s the third actress to be considered for this role (at least, the third name who’s been publicly bandied about), this is prime opportunity to hope that the third time’s the charm. (Pause for groans.)

Seo Kang-joon is also in the mix (some outlets are reporting him as being cast, others state that he’s considering), and looks ready to pack his busy schedule even tighter. His most recent project to be released, Are You Human Too, was pre-produced and has been done with filming for a while now, but given that it only just started broadcasting, it seems like the guy never takes a break.

Third Charm comes from veteran PD Pyo Min-su, who has a number of hits to his name, such as entertainment-world-themed The Producers, entertainment-world-themed The World They Live In, bubbly rom-com Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, breezy rom-com You’ve Fallen For Me, and international sensation Full House.

This drama is described as a romantic comedy that’ll show us “real dating” between a couple, which I might have interpreted as a specifically realistic approach if we hadn’t already seen what passed for “reality” in The Producers. That is to say, not very realistic; I’m expecting standard rom-com here, not that that’s bad, I don’t know why some people keep trying to run away from that.

The other actresses who were at one point up for the leading role include Chun Woo-hee (The Wailing) and Sooyoung (Man Who Sets the Table), who both passed. Esom has reportedly received the offer and is considering it positively. I’d love to see her headline a rom-com after seeing how she rocked her sidekick role in Because This Life Is Our First, and while I’m not entirely sure this is a pairing that gets me excited, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Writing are Park Eun-young of the 2006 film Maundy Thursday and Park Hee-kwon, who has writing credit on the film The Flu. It is aiming to secure a 16-episode run on JTBC later this year.

lol PHJ and KGE were already doing well. On the contrary PHJ hasn't had much luck post that. Anyways the comment has nothing to do with other actors. What it means is, the accusation back then were that TVN and PD were trying to push SKJ too much because they wanted to promote him and make him 1st lead material. Soon after, TVN announced a super expensive investment with Entourage. So , basically TVN was willing to invest in SKJ. The fact that today SKJ is well accepted by the audience and is a A list celebrity shows that TVN + PD's tactic worked. TVN has followed up super flop entourage with a more expensive investment in sKJ in are you human too. This is not to say that SKJ doens't deserve it. It is more to point out that, the industry/ agencies are more powerful than audience any given day. If they want their way its very easy for them to manipulate audience (audience can keep cribbing..eventually will give up)

and CITT did no one as much benefit as SKJ. Kim bong so got NJk and LSK fame. NJK got his initial popularity from scarlet heart as well. KGE is the only one i would admit benefitted in terms of immense popularity. Wasn't a household name..people were super skeptical of her.. but her acting cemented her talent power

nah..people were angry.. but hate was primarily for the PD.. SKJ got what TVN wanted for him.. be the new blue eyed boy.. TVN has invested so much in him.. first that incredibly expensive remake of entourage.. and now this

I was completely pleasantly surprised watching AYHT, and he's my favorite part of the show! He's playing the robot versus human excellently, and I've been completely endeared to the robot. I definitely think he has promise.

I'd always thought he was a hit-or-miss actor, but I like him in this, and hope he can continue to improve and get good projects that suit him.

Every time he comes on-screen I’m smiling like an idiot at my TV. Every time he’s not on-screen I’m about to nod off to sleep.

I did NOT expect this, but I will not complain about liking another actor/character!

Won't this be SKJ's 3rd drama this year with AYHT and Between Us? He seems to have not taken a break! If Esom accepts I'm definitely watching this because she was the definition of a spot light stealer in BTIOFL.

So a rom-com without the rom-com tropes? That's an interesting premise. If it does give me another conflict-free and mature relationship like what APAD surprised me with, I might end up liking this drama a lot.

Esom was very impressive in BTLIOF, while on the other hand, I find myself decently optimistic for SKJ (I'll reserve my happiness till AYHT ends with him pulling his weight as the lead). Would have wanted him to do something else, but I guess you take whatever work comes your way since experience is important.

Tired of Seo Kang Joon. He can't act and he's not charismatic at all. His sponsor must be rich.

I am also curious to know if he's still doing 'something about us'. There was something about the story which I would love to see onscreen so if this doesn't get finalized I would be quite disappointed indeed. I hope he still does it though. Dramas based on webtoon have solid scripts comparatively.

Please please just don't murder this rom-com by showing us what's "real dating" the Pretty Noona way. I much rather chow down rom-com comfort food after that 16-course meal.

I'd like "real dating" the 1% of Anything way.

To be honest, I liked Esom so much in BTLIOF that I'd watch this however it turns out.

Esom is so badass in BTLIOF! She became my favorite female character by the end of the show. (Bo-mi might come close second especially if she had more screen time to develop her story, Ji-ho was fast becoming my all-time favorite and then.....*coughs*)

Now in hindsight BTLIOF deals with workplace sexual harassment in such more satisfying way (albeit smaller scale) which gives me even more appreciation for the drama.

I don't know about Seo Kang-joon (he did pretty well in Cheese in the Trap, I am not watching Are you human yet), but Esom is AWESOME. She was amazing in Because this is our first life and Like for Likes (a movie not a kdrama - highly recommended).

Definitely adding it to my to-watch list.

I’m warming up to Seo Kang-joon and I’m really liking him in Are You Human, Too?, and I absolutely love Esom despite only seeing her in Because This Life is Our First and Whote Christmas (and LMK’s “Eternal Summer” MV, lol). This isn’t a pairing I would’ve envisioned, but I’m intrigued!

SKJ sure is busy this year. I know AYHT finished filming last year, but still. His pretty face is set to be on our screens all year, it seems.

I'm glad to see Esom in contention for a lead role. I loved her in BTLIOF, and she also did well in a more traditional romantic role in the film Like for Likes. I fell asleep during the first episode of AYHT, so I don't have much to say about Seo Kang-joon, but I'm always game for a rom-com whether it is traditional and tropey, or quirky and subversive. So like JB, I'll give this one a shot.

I was just thinking yesterday that there are numerous actors and actresses who've given us great, memorable performance as secondary or even tertiary characters, and who deserve to be in the spotlight more. I'm thrilled for awesome Esom!

Anything on JTBC definitely gets a closer look and at least a first episode watch from me. I wonder if JTBC is shopping a "real" dating TV show similar to it's hit Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food (aka Something in the rain).

I can get behind that because I loved the reality part of Pretty Noona and how every scene was shot in a 90's movie-esque style. The mom went kind of wacko and the heroine also dropped her marbles somewhere, but the actual cinematography/visual style stayed solid throughout.
