Mary tried to explain as much as she could in a previous OT: http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/03/open-thread-542/#comment-3209873 I think there are serious problems going on in the back end, but it seems like it's not anything they can share details on at the moment. Most Beanies are just keeping up with discussions on the fanwalls, and waiting it out.

Hm, I can't seem to find it either. Maybe it got removed. But mary just gave an analogy on chewing, and how some things they had forgotten how to chew, some things they need to learn how to chew, and it's going to take them a while. Sorry, this was from a while back so I can't remember it clearly.

Okay, I honestly thought I was the only one thinking this, but then I went back and read the other 'open threads'. I wonder what really is happening :/

I miss the news, the award ceremony recaps, table readings, bts drama (i.e. the Cheese in the Trap), upcoming drama posters/teasers, etc. But most importantly yes, less dramas are being recapped. The 'Theme of the Month' segments I was a fan of first, but now...not much, can't deny just because it feels like there are so many that are published throughout the month.

My head is still spinning about the news from the What Were Watching post that Dramabeans was actually sold to someone last Summer/Fall of 2017.
http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/06/team-dramabeans-what-were-watching-106/

Perhaps there is some strife behind the scenes with what direction the two groups want the site to go? JB and GF might want it to go in one direction and the new owner might want it to go in another direction. It seems like he wants to push BeautyTap a lot. It might be difficult to have full control over your site to no or little control. I can see JB and GF (or anyone) getting frustrated with that which might be why they ghosted from the site.

Everything seemed great in November with the store launch, new YouTube videos, and all that jazz. But the store suddenly disappeared and the YouTube videos are MIA. They did the YouTube video at the Beauty Tap offices before, which is why I think they had a good relationship that might not be the best right now.

Of course I am just speculating.

But I do feel like a bit of *heart* is gone which is why I am concerned. I hope it is just my feeling though.

Not only pushing BeautyTap, but also the videos that no one seems to bother watching and commenting. I agree with whoever it was who said there must have been some gag order in effect because JB and GF would not be willingly stay mums for so long knowing all kinds of speculations are being made about this site.

DB is on fan mode. Awards, casting news, reviews etc are posted on bennies fan wall.

DB contributed a lot to my K-drama addiction (10+ yrs) and now my lack of interest in K-drama is mainly due the lack of activities here.
It's a good thing for me but I hope things will get back to normal soon for those die hard fans who are still very active here.

But those postings are hidden and the only way to find them is to click on individual beanie's fan wall.

Someone on Koala's blog made an observation that there is a clear lack of buziness on the international fandom these days and that perhaps it is directly related to the lack of news and recaps posted here on DB. DB has been the reason so many got addicted to K-dramas in the first place. To think that a new business partner might be doing things that is akin to killing the goose that lays the golden eggs is so hard to swallow. :-(

Wow. That's so interesting that it's being noticed on other websites that international interest in kdrama is going flat and it's probably due to Dramabeans fizzling out. The Korean government should be noticing and taking steps to address the problem with the new DB owner, as DB undoubtedly has contributed immensely to the success of Hallyu.

I agree with @kiara, the change has had a grave effect on me personally. Lack of specific show recaps and lack of general activity on the site is making me watch much less and have lots less fun. I'm really sad about it.

It's confusing that the new owner said he wanted DB to spread the word of Asian entertainment and diversity but instead the site is doing so much less of it now. Does he not read it?

@bbtsl the article says he founded Dramabeans, lol.

I hardly doubt dramabeans was founded by James Sun. Most probably the article was referring to new/converted website. Been following dramabeans for 10 years.

Same. Good thing for me too, but this site is still my main drama site, so I hope it will be back to normal soon. At least if not much recaps, maybe news related to kdrama should be updated regularly more.

I feel exactly the same. Without the recaps of all the dramas out my interest had definitely dropped. I used to know every drama that was on air and who were starring in it even if I wasn't watching it because of DB. Now I can barely tell you what dramas are out and I am easily confused by which drama is which.

I really missed the recaps by everyone. There were many a times that I ended up watching dramas I swore off because of an actor or because of a repetitive storyline, all because DB recapped it and suggested it. I have less time nowadays to spend on k-dramas and recaps were a way for me to "test the waters" without commiting hours to a show that could end up in disappointment. Many times the recaps were more interesting in their cheeky commentary than the show itself.

I'm really sad with the new direction the site has gone and miss the old DB blog where it focused more on the voices of javabeans and her team. I do respect the wonderful community that is active in this site but honestly I don't visit this site to hear a guest beanie type about a random theme of the month or to buy beauty products.

I really hope to best for javabeans and her team and hope that this site will be able to bring back it's former days off glory.

I have totally stopped watching Kdramas since DB stopped posting new stuff/recaps/news. I am checking some Turkish shows or Cdramas in the meantime, hoping DB gets back on track, hopefully soon :D

I watched Kiralik Ask, Ask Laftan Anlamez and am currently watching Dolunay. I first was a delight though angsty, the second - well I'm glad my laptop screen is still intact after all the stupidity the leads indulged in, in that show, am watching Dolunay which has some really annoying pesky characters I wish I could smash with a fly swatter. Might check out Sound of the Desert ( C-drama) next.

I miss the diversity of voices. LollyPip is a hero for recapping so many shows, don't get me wrong. But it was so nice when you could check a recapper's name to see what kind of ride you were in for. Or when e.g. JB and GF traded off on shows so you could compare their opinions.

DB has grown into something more than the sum of its recaps, so I will always be here as long as they keep the site live, even if there's not much coming from admin. But if JB and GF or any of the other writers move on to new pastures, I will also gladly follow them there and do my best to build a new community with them. Because it's that amazing writing, those particular voices, that brought us to where we are today. If funding is an issue, I wonder if they would consider starting a Patreon - I'm sure many of us would contribute what we can afford.

Lots of speculations but I think it’s probably due to legal issues. I know @ally-le brought it up and I’ve seen it being talked about on a couple other blog sites, Koala and ask Nona’s over forks. It’s probably copywrite issues and I’ve been seeing lots of talk about recap blogs getting cease and desist orders.

I'm not surprised that they didn't announce it.
Viki, DF etc went through different owners and no one said anything.

There were so many drama blogs back then that helped create this K-drama communities for overseas fans.
Most of the bloggers from the 2000s are now gone and the ones that are still around are being threatened by this DCMA.
I get the legal stuff and all that but if it's going to destroy these communities then it's not going to benefit these legal streaming sites.

Discussing shows under the streaming videos with random people is not the same as discussion it with the recaps here.

I really hope they'll think twice about trying to shut down sites with recaps etc just because they have the rights to certain dramas.
To me streaming sites and drama blogs should support each other like DB does for viki and have helped with DF's launch.

Every freaking new owner thinks that this is some kind of competition for viewers and if they'll shut down all these recap sites they'll get more viewers.

*end of rant*

6

Yeah, I really miss the casting news and write-ups on upcoming dramas. As one of the main editors for Kdramas over at DramaWiki, DB was one of my go-to sources for info on upcoming dramas. Sure I can find the info on other sites like Soompi, but frankly that site is so full of unrelated crap and the articles are so poorly researched and written, I hate to rely on such an unreliable source.

Does anyone have any recommendations for dramas like APAD where the guy who gets the girl (I'm not bothered whether first lead or not) does not display jerk tendencies to the female?

After watching APAD, About Time is so hard to watch with that shouty confession, Undateables just lost me with that stupid bet and AYHT got off the wrong foot with that slap (You know GSY won't end up with the robot. I'm watching WSK and it seems that respectful leads are present in there for now (yay!), but it would be nice to binge-watch a rom-com series (I can FF all the nasty parts) that is light and fluffy.

LYJ isn't total respectful to the KMS, but I don't see his behaviour as veering into jerk territory, because he explained himself in ep 2, and that explanation even caught KMS offguard.

It was on my radar ... until I found out that it was a weekend series. And then the cuts that I saw involved family drama which is then usually a big nope for me unless I'm sacrificing my own soul to watch someone I like (LSY in About Time).

Yes, there's mother and brother involve in the situation but it's not a family weekend drama though. The drama focuses on the OTP. Little things that Jak Doo did to his 'wife' was very sweet and made me giggles. Other than that drama, I think the male lead on Jugglers can be categorized as a non jerk one. He's a bit mean in the beginning, but not a jerk at all.

I saw the recap for Jugglers, and if WSK continues at its current quality level, it seems like a downgrade to revisit that show haha. The two couples were cute but that's it.

What is WSK?

What’s wrong with Secretary Kim @bellamafia

I was a little pissed with the undateables too, but let's see what happens. Hopefully that stupid bet would not come to play. So far he hasn't been that big of a jerk to her and I hope it continues to stay that way. I really don't want to drop it.

If you want respectful male leads- have you watched because this life is our first? It has Lee minki and jung so min.
Also you can watch weightlifting fairy Kim bok joo.
Then there's just between lovers.
Also the reply series- I've not watched 94 though.

I second ALL these recommendations! Almost all of my favorite male leads right here, especially Se-hee (BTLIOF), Joon-hyung (WFKBJ), and Gang-doo (JBL)! Although JBL isn’t a rom-com.

And if you need more:
Dal-ja’s Spring (oldie but a goodie, male characters like Tae-bong were such a rarity back then, one of my other favorite male leads)
Healer (not exactly a rom-com, but it is romantic and funny)
I’m Not a Robot (Min-kyu and Jia don’t start off on the right foot, but I think it makes sense and Min-kyu’s character growth is wonderful)
Shopping King Louis (Louis and Bok-shil are perfect together!)

I also hate the jerk male lead, and all these dramas in addition to @superwhopotterlock’s have some stellar examples of male leads, I think. My Ajusshi is another, but it’s not a rom-com and there isn’t really a romance in the traditional sense... one of the best dramas I’ve ever seen, though.

BTIOFL - I've read the recaps and saw the nice cuts :P
WFKBJ - I tried watching and NJH at his best acting didn't motivate me to continue. LSK was also a little patchy and reminded me of Go Ara and Hyeri in the Reply series: carried by strong writing and directing.
Reply series - oh they were probably one of the first few k-dramas that I watched. Are they considered rom-com though? Thought it was more family and coming-of-age stuff. And that husband mystery thing which APAD infamously replicated.
JBL - It's Melo haha. I did see the recaps though, watching is another thing. And with CAHM going on now, plate is full.

To reply to @mindy:
INAR & SKL - Same as BTIOFl, recaps + nice cuts :)
MA - I tried to live-watch this, but it was just too dark and not my taste. Personally I enjoyed APAD a lot more even though the writing for all things non-OTP wasn't as strong.

A Poem A Day. It is known as You Who Forgot Poetry on DB.

It is not a rom-com though, it's a medical drama but focusing on physical therapists.

The drama is super light and there are only two major plot lines: OTP and female lead's career, the rest of the story is rather slice-of-life.

I don't recommend you watch it if you're looking for a rom-com since the drama actually goes against one of the main rom-com tropes (spoilers? I think I hid it well enough), but if you like something fluffy, it's pretty good.

1

Thanks,@Radily! I think I’ll try Wok if Love.

I prefer K-dramas to C-dramas, strangely because I can speak Chinese and drama in real life tends to trump drama in reel life. With the Korean language barrier, I'm often more focused on the non-verbal cues. C-dramas tend to have a variety of accents which messes me up when I know the language. K-dramas also have different accents but it doesn't matter when I can use the subs to understand.

Aww yes :( dramaland likes to mix killing with romance... how much of a "jerk" can you tolerate though? How about something like 49 Days where the lead is gruff but not mean?

Or maybe a short show like Splish Splash Love or something wacky like Surplus Princess.

1

Required fields are marked *

I do think my tolerance level for jerkiness definitely dropped to a new low after APAD. It's probably hard for a rom-com to replicate Dr Ye because APAD was never a rom-com and could afford to create the sweetest male lead while basing its story on BY's professional journey. :P

I think I should have mentioned this in the OP, but I have lurked on DB for 5+ years and seen a lot of recaps without watching the show, and started binge-watching this year with my first live-watch show being APAD. I have to admit that after APAD, it's hard to move on, which is why I asked the question like a newcomer to dramas haha.

1

I used to read and backread all recaps after finding DB too. Watching is still a different experience though. I like to wait to forget the details and go back to a show whose recaps I enjoyed reading. Maybe try that?

BUT I feel like we're facing a different problem: you're still not over APAD! I dunno if anything we say can actually convince you to let go of its magic and try something new. If you try something similar so soon, you'll just end up comparing it to your first love. XD

2

I agree with @Mary. If you are satisfied with the recaps, there is little room for us to recommend you a male lead better than dr Ye, honestly. But then again, watching, even if you know the outcome of the plot, is not the same.
I would recommend 20th century boy and girl. He is like dr. Ye but with the advantage of knowing Jin jin all their lives.

Strongest delivery man... Kang soo is definitely not a jerk. And if I were you, I would give fairy weightlifting kim bok joo a second chance. It is not only the main leads but the rest of the cast that inspire a very funny and nice story to watch.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think on hindsight I should have probably been a bit more specific in my OP and asked for a drama that isn't recapped here because I do want to be surprised by a drama (like how I was when I started APAD live, not knowing how it would go). It's probably the reason I started live-watching because I felt binge-watching was a bit too cheat-codey + it was taking up too much of my time IRL.

Maybe it's too much of a request to ask people to predict a future drama with a nice male lead :P But all these recommendations will probably be part of my watching if none of the current dramas are exciting enough.

1

Fight My Way. Friends to lovers, slice of life, and the lead is not a jerkface chaebol, but a rather a fighter with a marshmallow heart.

Yes! My most memorable pairing from that show however was the two guys and how one of the guys thought he loved the other. I did feel that the show explained away the 'gay' bit a little bit too easily though, but given that the show is aired in Korea, that was probably intentional.

Required fields are marked *

Oh, the gay subplot was very badly done, but I have come to expect that from kdramas. If you won't watch Healer (though I think recaps cannot do it justice), another one that comes to mind is High School King of Savvy; Seo In-Guk is all kinds of funny and adorable, if you can look past the high-schooler-adult romance. But you may have seen that one too. Another random suggestion is Bring it on Ghost. It doesn't get mentioned often, but I enjoyed it a lot.

I've been enjoying COME AND HUG ME to bits. Thursday's episodes were preempted on MBC by a soccer game between ROK and Bolivia. It would have been better if they'd skipped the Wednesday episodes, too. The normal overnight cliffhanger has morphed into a one-week cliffhanger. I'm concerned that this will throw off the timing of all the remaining episodes from here on out, dang it! The same thing happened to THE KING LOVES, and it seriously threw off the story's rhythm.

COME AND HUG ME has been unfolding nicely with a one-two punch that doesn't fester too long. It would be great if the Overlighting Deva of Plot Unfoldment & Episode Scheduling could wave her magic wand and make MBC air a double batch of episodes next Wednesday. That would restore the rhythm.

I feel a little disappointed in CAHM, because I feel like the plot is moving SO SLOWLY, and its starting to remind me of Pretty Noona which I dropped, because in that show it was kiss after kiss, and in this show we get stare after stare.

I'm all for emotional heartbreak, but it's almost halfway through the show, and if next week gives us the same-old "I'm sorry to you ... no I'm more sorry to you" stuff I'm going to drop it.

I loverly CAHM. I love it so much. I am the opposite of @radily because I actually like the slow (but not too slow) burn. It really makes me anticipate what is to happen.

On the other hand. Lawless Lawyer is losing me. I want to continue liking it, but the sudden instant coitus in episode 6 really threw me off. Now it feels like all the love scenes are staged for viewership. I wasn't into that "Mother birthday" trip they took at all. I am just not liking that entire thing. I also though that jae-yi hopped on Sang-pil's side way too quickly. It was a one episode thing and done. I want them to slow their roll, but alas it is too late for all that.

I am enjoying everything else about Lawless Lawyer though. I like all the side characters and the revenge plot with the *SPOILER ALERT reintroduction of a certain woman. END SPOILER* That is pretty interesting to me. I just hope they stop showing forced scenes of intimacy.

But I enjoy watching the progress of Na Moo's character. He is slowly develop. There is something dark inside him which is yet to explode. It's sad he is now act as an enemy with his blood ties. He is denying the connection because they are a criminal. I have no idea how the writers will unfold this issue. But I don't know why this is heart breaking for me.

Hi Everyone! I hope you are all doing well today.

A new batch of dramas is here and I'm trying my best to check them all out! ..... I hope all the Beanies are enjoying the shows they're currently watching!

This week:

Suits - I continue to enjoy this show. I've only watched the first of this week's episodes and I'm wondering if the missing report situation is something Director Ham may not have anything to do with. It would be interesting if he didn't (but not surprising if he did).

Switch - Finally finished this one and I'm glad to report that, after giving all Jang Geun-seok's previous dramas a chance and never getting through any of them, I made it all the way through this one! Yay!

Greasy Melo - Absolutely love this show! I'm totally enchanted by the trio of main characters.

Lawless Lawyer - I've fallen woefully behind on this one and who knows when I'll get back to it. I've managed to watch up to episode 3 only.

Are You Human Too? - I jumped into this one at episode 2, so I most definitely need to go back and watch the first episode to get a bit more clarity on the starting point of this. ..... Wow, is there a lot of pretty in this one!

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? - What a hoot so far! Park Seo-joon's character is so full of himself but he's playing it well thus far otherwise it would just be annoying. ..... Park Min-young's character in episode 1 had me thinking that her character is what I had in mind the Juggler's secretary character would be when that particular show was airing.

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (The Undateables) - Great to see Namgoong Min and Hwang Jung-eum back on the screen! It was interesting to hear the explanation his character gives for his disinterest because I actually found some truth and good reasoning for it ...... but it's sure going to be fun to see how long his cool detachment lasts.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I feel refreshed after this week's kdrama episodes. Watching:

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim? (Somtimes actors' characters are stuck in my mind from previous kdramas they've been in, so at first it's like watching Kim Na Na (City Hunter) and Ji Sung Joon (She Was Pretty). It'll get who's really who all straightened out in my head.

Are You Human? Seo Kang Joon is adorable. His robot Shin Ill self is more adorable than his human self. This drama certainly doesn't beat around the bush, wham!

Can I Get A Hug?
The Undateables
Miss Hammarubi
Breakers - a composer/writer/singer competition that's sharp and fun.

And a spicy addition to my drama viewing this week is {{{drum roll}}} Nirvana in Fire because so many beanies have raved about it. I'm on episode 8 and I absolutely love it - the pace, conversation, and scenery are lovely and martial arts are amazing!

Have a great weekend!

With the warm weather and the fact that I will be starting a new full-time job next week, I will need to cut back on my drama watching. *sobs*

Hi everyone! First time in a long time I'm writing, usually just a everyday reader for many years now. But it'll be fun to now join in the discussions with all you beanies.

Right now I'm watching Come and Hug Me. I started watching the drama not kmowing how dark and deep the drama feels. It's far beyond all my expactations. The drama leads I've only seen in really small supporting roles so I didn't expect that level of acting also. Particuraly Jang Ki Young is shining in his potrayal of Nam Moo, him just being quit and just looking at her with such passion and despair. You can actually believe everything he feels from just his look. I'm already looking forward to his future drama leads.

Now for a very important question. Does anybody know where I could find info on korean drama airing reports? It's very frustrating getting false information from some sites about how many episode will air in the current week. Dramabeans have only week by week basis, but if I wanted to know in advance till the next week where could I find the info?

Now I would want to know for sure if we will get four half episodes of CaHM or more.

Soompi forums usually have up to date information. But to get the full list you would need to go to the actual official MBC page. I think CAHG is only airing on Thursday of next week.

@veeee, I need to know what happens next on COME AND HUG ME, too, and having to shove it back onto the furthest burner is a bummer. We haven't even made it to the half-way point (32 episodes, per DramaWiki). It's hard enough to watch the machinations of the Reporter From Hell. Paroled Psycho Hyung and potential copycats are stressing me out. I can't see Writer-nim's end game, so that adds to the angst. For now, I'll just have to medicate with WHAT'S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM, WOK OF LOVE, and UNDATEABLES. ;-)

2

There are currently so many dramas airing but somehow I don't have the mood to watch any of them! I don't think it's a drama slump exactly coz I still manage to get my hands on some, but just that these days they kinda bore me out.

Still a couple of them I'm currently watching are:

Suits- the reason I'm still holding on it is largely because of my love for the original series, in spite of knowing what's gonna happen at every turn I still like it. sometime it hits with me sometime it doesn't, like just this week, in the original series, this arc of Donna being fired and the mock trial that followed are some of my favorite episodes , but sadly the Korean version didn't like upto my expectation for that. Hope they do the end well atleast.

Lawless Lawyer - still on episode 6, and am I the only one surprised how quick it escalated? Not that I'm complaining, but it kind of doesn't give much kdrama-ish feeling then, where almost everyone takes up time to set up the romance. But for this drama it kinda makes sense, the makers might want to move ahead of the romantic aspect asap to focus on the actual revenge.

I was wondering about the complaints I read about the earlier episodes. I will bear these in mind.

Though, I really am enjoying the latter episodes. I love that the characters are rather clear about their feelings, there's not a lot of agonising and pining over what others feel, especially Sae-woo. I guess in the last episode, the one I find the hardest to read is Chil-sung especially in episode 20. Or maybe that's just me.

Yes! I cannot wait to see this develop. I hope it ends up being a love interest for Chil-sung who will also make Se-woo a tad bit jealous.

I just came back from a week in Oxford and London, where I stayed with friends and family respectively. Looks like @egads was not far and took the hot weather with her when she continued on to Iceland!

I watched Suits while I was away and saved Wok of Love, The Undateables and What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim for when I returned home.

While at Oxford, I met extraordinary people—particular the Black British and African students asserting their rightful place in science, law, and the humanities. Just as we’ve seen on U.S. campuses, they’re constantly having to present their receipts and perhaps suffer a double dose of imposter syndrome—what my friend calls the “Oxford disease.”

In addition to being inspired by those bright young things, I was entranced by older scholars who remained intellectually curious and engaged. I was especially charmed by a historian who was a contemporary of my dad’s and put me in touch with other friends from the Africa Society so that I can learn more about my dad who died when I was a baby.

In London, I went deep in a handful of museums and made a culinary pilgrimage to Ottolenghi Spitalfields. I must admit another cultural highlight was watching two nights of the gloriously execrable Love Island 2018 on ITV2. My cousin’s husband works for Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator. Ostensibly, we watched for work because Ofcom gets a lot of complaints from these TV dating shows. It was frelling fantastic. The cast is tanning-bed orange with blindingly bleached teeth, horny and hungry for fame. I’d never watched anything like it before and acknowledge my cousins’ non-stop commentary—in their Scottish accents—made it a sublime experience.

I feel happier than I have in months and will return to work this Monday feeling recharged and optimistic.

Also very charmed by the popular sobriquets my cousins used for local skyscrapers: the Cheese Grater, the Gerkhin, the Walkie Talkie and ... the Glass Testicle. (I initially thought my cousin's husband was pulling my leg with the last one.)

Two really good things happened for me this week. One is the start of What is Wrong with Secretary Kim and its recaps by lollypip.

The other is the story about this filmmaker in London who went to grab a sweater box from under his bed and in it discovered a strange cat and not only that, but she'd just had four kittens. They're changing his life.
In a week of news bleak news, especially about suicide, I wanted to share the kitten story 😽

This is completely unrelated to dramas but there are no other forums that I follow. And I was wondering if people are actually happy? Or are they just living out their lives because they were born?

Does happiness actually exist? Or is it momentary? A day out with friends or family and you are happy for the rest of the day. But that's all. It only lasts for the rest of the day. But mostly, it doesn't even last a few hours. Is that all everybody gets? Or are there people actually content and happy with their lives?

Obviously, there will always be bad days. But are there people who love their lives despite those bad days?

I'm sorry if this sounds really cheesy. But I was genuinely wondering.

As someone who doesn't have answers, here's what I have surmised so far - it's a work in progress.

1. Happiness is not external. A day out with friends and you're happy for the day? A crappy day at work and you're unhappy? These are external things. I think that to be happy, I need to think that I am happy and find a way to be happy despite external factors. What this way is - I don't know.

Personally I like being at peace. Neither very happy nor sad. So perhaps something like meditation is the way I should go?

2. Which brings me to - I also think we focus too much on "happiness" and chase after an elusive idea that has somehow been fed into our consciousness by the world around us. "Follow your dreams!" "Live your passion!" - these are actually very difficult things and don't always make one "happy". Perhaps if we focus more on living well, and less on living "happily", we might get there?

Peer pressure as a kid turned "living well" into "boring" for me - I'm trying to rectify this as an adult. Old habits die hard but taking some control over how I spend my day can only be a good thing.

I think happiness and contentment are different things. Happiness to me seems like an upward spike in your life, like winning the lottery or tasting great food or talking to your crush. It's temporary. Same goes for bad things/downward spikes.

You can't be in a permanent spike. No matter how many spikes you get, it will always eventually settle to a baseline. That baseline determines how you feel overall about life. I think that baseline is contentment and it's more important than the spikes.

Some people can have a lot of happy spikes but still settle at a lower baseline. Some people can have few happy spikes but stay at a higher baseline. There are things you can do to raise the baseline. Like therapy or avoiding sedentary lifestyle and isolation. But it's different for everyone.

I'm a low-baseline person. I see a lot of people who have less happy spikes yet seem to be more content. I hope I can be like that one day, but I try not to beat myself up about it. Life is already hard enough without us feeling guilty about our feelings.

TGIF! Hope everyone had a good week! Newly started "What's wrong with secretary Kim" recorded over 5.4% ratings, compared to previous "My Ajussi" which got 3.9% ratings in the first ep, and reached 5.8% only in ep 10 (so sad!). That is impressive when major station dramas are not doing well currently- "Suits" had 8.4%, "Come and hug me" had 4.5%, and "Handsome man" got 3.9% in ratings. (I think cable ratings of 5% is more like 15% of major station). "Handsome man" team had the press conference and low ratings were mentioned.[OSEN]

NamGoong Min said "I received many texts cheering me on from PD-nims who I've worked with. But when I saw the ratings after the first broadcast, I was disappointed. But I thought I should keep going without blaming other people, doing this line of work, getting the grade called ratings. If ratings are the measurement in judging the show, I’d like to raise it and I think I can." Hwang Jung-eum also mentioned about ratings. "I wondered if I was too confident. I feel responsibility and need to work harder so that comments and scolding don't go to waste. I feel that doing similar romcom genre for 3 consecutive times made my Hwang Jung-eum image come out."

Hwang mentioned NamGoong-min is reliable and Choi Tae-joon has energy and good looks. "I usually don't listen to others, but I listen to NamGoong-min no matter what he says. I do the shoots trusting him as if he is my real brother. When Choi Tae-joon shows up in set, he spreads lively energy." Hwang came back after 8 months since her wedding and child-birth. She said she watched her kiss scene (with NGM) quietly with her husband. "Since I got married, the world looks beautiful. I am happy because of my baby." She said she tried harder to keep her weight under control than when she was single. "I recorded 47kg for the first time in 10 years. I am going to keep it up by doing workout." This is the second drama for Oh Yoon-ah(Coach Yang) working with HJE after "Incarnation of Money". "It seems Jung-eum feels at ease more. I became close to her during filming this time. I was happy doing all the scenes I appeared with Jung-eum." About the loveline between couch Yang(Oh Yoon-ah) and Yook-ryong (Jung Moon-sung), Oh said "I did the kiss scene on the first time I met Yook-ryong. I could do it comfortably because she was couch Yang. Yook-ryong showed cute and lovable image a lot on the set, so I was even flustered."

The main point of the second half is love triangle. NGM said "Tae-joon also will reveal his mind toward Jung-eum. So I think two men's battle of nerves will become tense and rift of various conflicts will deepen." Choi Tae-joon gets much love as Jung-eum's oldtime friend. Choi said "Actually there aren't many man friend relationships, so I think people look at him favorably. But as I see he is having different feelings toward Jung-eum, I thought there can't be a friendship between man and woman. It is interesting to shoot scenes where he checks and confirms between love and friendship with Jung-eum. I will try hard not to look pathetic."

They are even making modification to the scripts after episode 5 to make the plot more interesting. NGM said "It seems they are moving toward having leads' emotions more clearly displayed. It is being changed to focus on leads and main characters' development. Rather than the story about zero club, I think they will more focus on surrounding characters who connect the couple."

Wait, script modification?

"Investigation couple" team had a press conference.[OSEN] This Mon-Tues show's ratings keep rising and currently ahead of "Greasy melo" and "Are you human too". The main plot is about an eccentric forensic doctor and rookie prosecutor working together to solve cases. The show was pointed out for its cruelty and violence. PD No Do-chul said "Writers made many research specifically for the provoking scenes. We tried to control the level, but viewers still seem feel uncomfortable. Actually I wanted to show forensic doctors pouring their emotions in and pursuing the process. I wanted to show their hardships and sadness. I wanted to show them working with sense of responsibility in detail. I thought that was the strength and distinctive point in our drama." He added "Because there are so much limits airing in major network(non-cable) station, there are many times we play tricks and avoid the restriction. And I am grateful people view our drama as genre dealing with forensic doctor's world, rather than a provoking bloody show."

Jung Jae-young/Baek Beom said he likes the genre. "I like this kind of genre so much and I even thought the (cruelty and violence) level was too low. Honestly I wonder when we can show all these scenes. It is sad that we can only show a half." About his Baek Beom character, he said "Actually he resembles me. The way he talks or the way he looks at things are same. An actor can't act if he can't understand his character. What you want to do and what you can do is different. Actually what I want to do is playing Prince Charming. But I don't think I can understand him. I think Baek Beom is the character I can understand if I look him inside, and I think we have similarity."

Jung Yoo-mi/Eun Sol said she liked the plot. "When we read the script, it was really interesting. It was full of suspense. I was also curious how it would be expressed in the screen. Because the plot flows nicely as characters' relationships get tangled, I had an expectation it would bring up the ratings." Jung had unfavorable feedback about her acting in the beginning. "I thought I never had this much share to digest before, and since Eun Sol is busybody, it is exhausting to play her physically too. I wanted to show how warm-hearted Eun Sol changes by meeting cold Baek Beom. Maybe because so much parts were shown in the beginning, lacking area was stand out more. I just want to say I will try harder."

Park Eun-suk gained the nick "Sweet Gang-hyun" playing soft, elite prosecutor. "I have played many villain roles before. My stare or way of speaking seemed to give such vibe. It was not soft or sweet so I worried a lot in the beginning. Gang-hyun is Eun Sol baragi(one-sided crush), so I thought I had to fix my way of talking. I practiced like talking to my dog, or my nephew."

Thanks a million, fan! About the gruesome and "provoking" scenes in Investigation Couple: I think they started blurring out some of the autopsy scenes at around the time of this press conference, which was kind of disappointing but I guess not the PD etc's fault. Then again, the PD's claim about wanting to focus on forensic science is pretty laughable. One of the most common complaints about the show (from the relatively small group of people commenting on it in English) is that it keeps veering off towards pointless characters and melodrama.

On the plus side, the cases so far are surprisingly dark and complex, with no easy resolutions. And while I'm not surprised that Jung Jae-young thinks he's no "Prince Charming" (probably strongly hinting that there will be no romance in the show), I think he's selling himself short, cos he has decent chemistry with Jung Yu-mi, and he'e also been a terrific (albeit unconventional) romantic lead in loads of good (albeit unconventional) rom-coms e.g. Someone Special, Plan Man, Castaway on the Moon, Wedding Campaign, Right Now Wrong Then.

Lee Yi-kyung(Detective Cha) flirts with Stephanie Lee (Stella Hwang) in the show. He said "Flirting is something you have to be careful in this kind of genre. Stella character is portrayed as three-dimensional and not an easy person to approach. I feel sense of duty thinking I am covering the area which can be ventilation in the show. Also romance is not achieved easily here, so please watch it as another interesting point."

About ratings' rise, PD No said "I am grateful many people like our show. There are still many stories left to tell. We are working hard with actors' passionate acting, staffs' dedication, and writer's efforts all combined. I hope people enjoy it to the end." He continued, "I don't think more viewers joined just because other drama(Miracle we met) ended. I think our genre's own characteristics and universal concept pulled new viewers in. I think pie became bigger. We will just portray what we wanted to draw to the end without wavering."

Well, I guess I am not the only one frustrated with Eun Sol. ES fighting!

1:41 KY: You even ate cake (Jae-yi flops down)
KY: Hello! I heard you even ate cake? You said you didn't eat anything. (He is investigating Jae-yi who ate cake). And you ate cake. No wonder I felt your cake weight.

KJ: Just one forkful.
2:12 KY: I think I can smell cake from this side. Who do you think ate?
2:16 (They said Action! KY couldn't lift her at once and threw her.) KY: My gloves are too slippery.
2:30 KJ: I think I was caught on film when I was thrown out. Was it on camera?
2:37 People: We will prepare
2:39 (Cake war didn't finish) Manager: one piece was like that Wedge in shape.
2:51 KJ: This much.(Jae-yi tries to say she ate a little). KJ:I ate this much.
KY: You ate more than I thought.
