I think it will be interesting to see the responses for this question: in all dramas aired in 2018, which drama let you down the most?

I'm going to limit the scope to the prime-time shows that DB has shown / is showing in the "Currently Airing" section. Do state why!

Show that let me down the most: Misty
Why: The writer forgot that there needed to be a logical conclusion to the murder mystery. Also, the murder scene was poorly directed and was super unrealistic. The open ending made zero sense to me.

I didn't even need to think hard on this one: Mystery Queen 2. I was looking forward to the OTP bickering their way to each other and then it turned into a mess that still didn't resolve. I'm bitter, and wish they had just left us hanging with season 1 because my imagination was better than what we got.

That's mine too! Why did they do that to us!?! The best part of the 1st season was seeing Yoo Seol Ok and Ha Wan Seung and how their relationship developed. And then this season , no payoff! The distress.

Admittedly I've only seen two shows from 2018 that I think qualify for your criteria, they were Pretty Noona and LIVE. Pretty Noona was the run-away winner for the 'let down' award. Actually, it let me down more than any other kdrama I've seen so far. It was just a bit too realistic for me, with a poor ly written ending (just my opinion).

The runaway let down was Pretty Noona for me as well. I loved the beginning SO MUCH and then everything hit the fan and so much time was spent with that awful mother. I would think it would be too realistic if it weren't for that last ep what with her randomly quitting her job to go and barista with her friend and him following there---to...what? To what end, guys? is he going to move to Jeju island and barista as well? Convince his company to let him work from there? And her mother is still the vilest woman on the planet. So---where exactly is the growth and the closure that is going to allow me to believe that those two actually make it? Or am I supposed to believe that he followed her to Jeju and they boned down for awhile and then he went back to his life and she continued hers and ....thats it? maybe they both find someone that their families will accept? Drama. You are terrible.

Evergreen.

No magic, world building, and sometimes felt like they just threw every trope in.
However, the OTP had cute chemistry and it did have a twist, I wasn't expecting the tree to be the villain.

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. I dropped this one about halfway through. The story was muddled, the relationships (romantic and otherwise) didn't progress in a natural or enjoyable way, and the fantasy elements, rather than adding excitement to the plot, just bogged it down more. I hear the ending was lame too, so I don't regret giving up on it.

Misty for me too! Not because it was horrible but because it was so incredibly good, so magnificent and then the nonsensical ending (more so how it was handled with the underlying theme, cop-outs, and randomly dropped characterizations). I still consider it a great drama because the characters were impressive but it's no longer topping anything because of it's haywiredness.

the hardest of polls. I had high hopes for Noona but I stopped watching before it could let me down so I'm somehow ok with it? but I dropped APAD too late and it left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth from all the wasted potential. I was hoping for a drama driven by character development and... wow I'm getting annoyed just remembering it. definitely A Poem a day then.

2

Required fields are marked *

Pretty Noona because it had a lot going for it and my expectations were medium high, but the romance had no nice build up, the relationship did not grow or develop, the character development seemed to only go to female lead and it took so long that it seemed she had not changed until the end... it suddenly became angsty and boring, not helped with skinship that became meaningless. I dropped it when mother became shrieky and only watched the last episode to get thoroughly annoyed at how it played out, ie no improvement on how they started. Deadly disappointing.

Somewhere in the last few eps of Noona I decided that the drama was really about the Noona character falling in love with herself and the boy was the catalyst for the burst of independence. But...no. No that is not what the drama was supposed to be. And even if it was? if a viewer has to fanwank that hard to get there? Something went horribly wrong.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's a nice one, @isthatacorner @isa

It was definitely more about Noona caring about herself in spite of her lousy mother, weak father, blow hot/cold brother and mostly uncaring colleagues/bad bosses. It would have been fine as a story, but it was not well executed. When instead of the heroine being someone viewers feel, whole-heartedly positive about, we have lots of the opposite... "something went horribly wrong", indeed.

As of right now Hwayugi. My expectations were fairly tempered and it didn't even meet that. The first half was fine though I wondered what the point of it was, but the 2nd half was terrible. It had no direction, was essentially a repeat of the first half and that ending. I mean really.

We'll see how the 2nd half of the year goes. I'm inclined to say that About Time will end up on my disappointing dramas list, but I'm waiting till I get through a few more eps since I'm behind.

Mystery Queen 2 because they had a fun formula from season 1 and messed up the whole of season 2.

Misty was disappointing for the last two eps but only because the other eps were great in comparison. If I put Misty's ending in a less stellar show, it wouldn't even register as a disappointment. (Though maybe that's the reason why others put it as their top pick haha)

@bernadett I'm sad to say that I've usually found shows, ok... not all but most of them, with Shin Se Kyung (Bride of Habaek, Girl Who Sees Smells) to not be great ... or maybe, she just does not have it to do a lead role justice, although I feel that she really tries. Her expressions are somehow a bit off.

The other two actresses who come to mind are JIn Se Yun (Bridal Mask, Doctor Stranger) and Ku Hye Sun (Angel Eyes, Blood). It's interesting to note, though, that they do get awards and lots of opportunities. However, somehow, I haven't found more than maybe 1 show they are in, or a character that they've played, that I could wholeheartedly 'endorse'.

Pretty Noona. I'm glad I dropped it very early.
About Time, but with fantasy it's expected.
It could be really good or mediocre. I just don't expect it will be like a network weekend drama. So much cliche and crazy outfits. I just keep watching because of my fondness for both leads. If they're other actors I would dropped it early like Pretty Noona.

Pretty noona for the win! I hated this drama, it was ridiculous!
Then comes the disappointment with mystery queen 2.
Also other dissapointing dramas are undateable (well i saw it in the promos that i should have negative expectation) but i am going to finish watching it.
About time its so clichΓ©d that i could not stand.
Lawless lawyer its too fast and still too slow, dropped!
And rest i forgot already, i think the list is really long!

Pretty noona tops the list for me. I enjoyed it in the beginning, until I realised in every episode after the midway point I was asking myself if they handed over the writing to an intern who hated their job. This one really disappointed me. And that ending! I still get rage-y thinking about the payoff I got given the hours I put into watching the show. 😀

I thought the answer was easy til I realized 'Revolutionary Love' doesn't quite qualify because it ended Oct 2017, though I did watch it later. That was the only drama that I can recall where I was yelling angrily at my monitor after the final scene.
I don't know why so many people are so upset by the ending of 'Misty'. The problem seems to be people thought it was a murder mystery when it was actually a Greek tragedy.

Misty was a great show until the end. Writer nim bungled the ending, but it didn’t ruin it for me. Hye Ran should hve delivered the truth and Tae Wook belongs in Prison Playbook S2.

The writer of Pretty Noona should be exiled and banished to write infomercials.

I agree on Misty- so much talent wasted on a mess. Did you notice that much of the discussion of this show turned on discussions of the female lead's wardrobe? It was fabulous, but the fact that people were caught up in a fashion discussion should have been a clue as to how bad the writing was- the actors were great but you can only do so much with bad materiel.

Not related to drama, but has anyone bought stuff from ASOS? If so, was the quality what you expected and true to size?

I want to buy shoes (my feet are tiny so very excited that they carry sz 4).

I want to buy clothes too, but unsure about sizes, I’m a xxs in brands like BCBG/WHBM but when I was in Europe, I was a 34 or 36!

1

Required fields are marked *

I buy stuff all the time at ASOS, quality depends on brand (they offer like 100 brands), but generally it’s OK. If you’re not satisfied, you can always return for FREE WORLDWIDE which is the main reason why I purchase stuff there. Usually online sellers only offer free returns for the country where it was dispatched from.

European shoes are HUGE. I wear shoes UK 2 (EU 35. US 5) and I recommend you choose smaller size. Are you from US? Generally clothes sizing is smaller, so be sure to check measurements.

I finally watched Let’s Eat on Netflix and it is NOT GOOD for my waistline! πŸ˜“ I made my husband take me to the one Asian grocery store in our town and bought a bunch of Korean sauces and pastes. Online recipes called for soybean paste and hot pepper paste. Hi Everyone and a Happy Eid Al-Fitr (Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri) to all who celebrate it!!

I've been enjoying a great public holiday today and catching up on quite a few episodes and starting on a new show as well. I'm as happy as a clam at high water with my drama viewing day.

Briefly I've:
-Finished Suits (scoring it based on my own personal bias as 7/10 for that great ending... especially the last 2 episodes)
-Started on Life on Mars (2 episodes in and I'm totally riveted and can't wait for more. Score = 8/10)
-Smitten with Sketch (7.5/10)
-Delighted with Secretary Kim (7/10)
-Enjoying The Undateables/Handsome Guy and About Time and Lawless Lawyer (giving them a 6/10 for now)
-Dropped Greasy Melo and am not sure if will start Are You Human.

I hope I can more or less keep up with most of these shows, but it's gotten tough nowadays with more to do. That's it for now. Hope everyone is well and having fun in Dramaland!

I had a feeling that the Chief either wasn't the one who had the visions or was related to Shi Hyun.

I'm so sad for the Grandma. By the way why did Se Hee disappear without a trace? And do you think Gina has been really waiting for Yeon Woo's release from the prison? They didn't show it.

@bernadett
Yes, I found it a bit sad that Se Hee just stopped showing up. Maybe it was a plot hole that they did not show Yeon Woo telling her nicely that he preferred she did not keep running to him. I expected her to be around a bit more still, and even for her to maybe become friends with Gina. However, I guess in the 16 episodes, they could only use her as a plot device.

We've got to take it on trust that Gina is somewhere in the background, ready to forgive Yeon Woo, and keeping those two stuffed toys together on her desk! πŸ˜†

Hi Everyone! ...... I hope you are all doing well today!

To all of the Beanies watching World Cup action, may your favorite team win!

This week:

Suits - If you find yourself in the need to look up an image of a snake ...... please know that Director Ham's picture is going to pop up.

Greasy Melo - Junho, Jang-hyuk ...... love these two together and I look forward to seeing them every week!

Lawless Lawyer - Did manage to squeeze in an episode and a half of this, so I'm up to ep 5. ...... That Judge Cha makes an interesting villain with her seemingly professional demeanor in public and then her sudden outbursts in private.

Are You Human Too? - You know, I know there's a robot, some baddies, some special effects here and there ...... but I find myself focusing more and more on actor Lee Joon-hyuk and the character he's portraying.

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? - Love it! This is the other show that I look forward to. I'm imagining a bunch of NG's from Park Seo-joon on this one because who wouldn't crack up with the lines he delivers?

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (The Undateables) - Still in the beginning of this one as I'm only up to episode 3.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

For reals on Secretary Kim, I thought I noticed a scene where Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young were barely holding on to their composure. There must be so much laughter on that set.

The NGs - I thought the same thing! How can he keep a straight face with his delivery of those lines? :)

Good morning Beanies. I post some pictures for Las Vegas family trip. Today, we are leaving after breakfast in Prestige Lounge at Palazzo hotel. I only lost $100 and hubby lost $200. We did not go out of hotel to walk around due to the heat. We stayed at the pool in cabanas for two days. We stayed here for my husband Slot tournament. He was in 17th place. Not to bad...

I am reading Perfect Mother by Aimee Malory so far it is good. It will be motion picture with Kerry Washington of Scandal soon. Therefore, I am beginning chapters of the book.

Summer Desire 2018: meh.. Only beginning is good. The middle and and end was meh. The cast was better.. No English subs..

Cinderella Chef: I am still waiting for episode 20 for English sub. :(

Investigation Couple: Damn... Beok Bom does not take a break... The second male lead is one hit hatred of Beok Bom... I read we won’t be seeing this drama since World Cup or something other special something like that...

This weekend, is my youngest sister graduation and Father’s Day. Busy Busy... Three kids is already on summer vacations....Meh... Luckily, we have them going to summer camps.... muhahahhah.... I feel really old due to my oldest son will be in 7th grade in Fall... My cousin just graduated 8th grade.. My other cousin graduate high school.

I hope you have a great weekends of spending time with your family on Father’s Day!!!!

Yes! Watch it! I’m currently on episode 6. I was actually a bit hesitant to watch the series because I thought it was too overhyped. But it’s an incredibly sweet love story.

I find myself identifying with Yuuri a lot, as I am often plagued with self doubt myself. But seeing Yuuri gain confidence with the help of Victor and watching their love story unfold is immensely satisfying. I definitely recommend!

It's been a while since I was last in DB! Sophomore year was really tougher, but I'm thankful I passed all my courses.

I recently started watching Wong Kar Wai's movie. I've always wanted to watch his movies, since I've been hearing it a lot from other people. Started with Chungking Express, and the experience was different from the hollywood movies I was used to watching. I was surprised to know that he actually doesn't have a script while filming!

Anyway, I've been watching Ghibli movies in between before I watch In The Mood For Love. Happy weekend, beanies! πŸ™‚

It's been a while since I saw you! Good job pulling through sophomore year ^^

I taught Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love in my first semester of grad school, and it helped me appreciate the films a lot more than if I had just watched them for leisure. I hope you'll love In the Mood for Love as much as I do! The colours and cinematography is gorgeous.

Good luck with watching Wong Kar Wai's movies, I find them very tedious to watch.

I have only watched Chungking as of now and yeah, I must say his movies are not really for casual viewers. It took me some time to understand where the movie is actually going haha

I have a doubt, how does the law system works in kdrama. In police dramas all sorts of investigations and running around is done by the cops but in prosecutor dramas it is the reverse.

Happy OT Beanies and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

I am always happy to change my mind about an actor. Recent ones are L(Miss Hammurabi), Seo Kang Joon(AYHT) and Park Seo Joon(WWWSK).

I'm in the minority who just couldn't get PSJ. Maybe Witch's Romance wasn't the ideal drama to introduce him to me. I found him seriously lacking in charisma compared to Ethan Ruan in the original Taiwanese drama. I watched some eps of She Was Pretty and I really disliked his character in there. Didn't help that he had a terrible wig in Hwarang either. I wasn't planning to watch WWWSK even though I felt the lure of Park Min Young. But I finally succumbed after seeing all the WWWSK posts on beanies' fanwalls. I'm barely into ep 2 and although I am not loving it yet, I think this might just be the drama for me to finally get PSJ.

My number one most disliked kdrama male character is the cool dude who's full of himself. However when drama makes him the subject of jokes, it changes everything.

Looking forward to strike more names off my 'dislike' list.

I have a soft sport for Park Seo Joon and he is absolutely on top of his game in WWWSK. I am so glad that even though he is full of himself he is not a mean jerk (also not too shouty which seems to happen with most of his roles.)

I am delightfully surprised by both L and Seo Kang Joon's performances. I am a few episodes behind on Miss Hammurabi, but L's character is absolutely swoony in the way that he forces himself out of his comfort zone to support Go Ara but still not betray his own principal and personality.

Hi Beanies!

This week has been grand! All of a sudden all these recaps and news posts. I hope we are back go business as usual!

I’ve been enjoying SHINee this week with their comeback and also WWWSK PSJ is gold. GOLD. PMY is so pretty. And her reactions to PSJ are priceless πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

I put a lot of the dramas I was watching on hold or in limbo. I was watching 6 live airing dramas an couldn’t keep track. Hopefully I go back to them later. I don’t always. Still watching LL and About Time.

I've also been adoring SHINee's comeback. I find that when a group is getting older, and you know you don't have many more years with them, every comeback becomes super emotional. I was watching SHINee on Weekly Idol and they were doing the Random Play Dance. When I saw them leave a spot for Jonghyun in the choreography, it touched me so much.

Hi @mimu1234. I also have had a soft spot for Lee Tae Hwan since PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) where at age 19 he played Investigator Kang Soo. He is still only 23 years old. I am a broken record when it comes to P&P. It is one of my favorites.
I am not watching WHAT'S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM but I believe I read that the character he plays is supposed to be in his thirties!

I first watched him in Comeback Mr. Ahjushhi and then for him I watched Pride and prejudice which I loved it. He's improving his acting skill.
Yes he's playing the older brother of male lead though he's the youngest one. May be he liked the script.
You should watch What's wrong with secretary Kim the drama is really good. That's the only drama I'm liking currently though I haven't started watching sketch and lawless lawyer.

I am glad to see another fan of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Btw, a P&P alumnus, Choi Min-soo (unforgettable as Boss Prosecutor Moon In P&P) is in having a ball in LAWLESS LAWYER as bad guy Mayor Ahn Oh-joo.
Maybe we can make a deal (a la SUITS) I will try to work in WWWSK and you will try to work in LL.
The situation. My first Park Seo-joon and Park Hyung-sik drama was the sageuk HWARANG (2016/2017). I enjoyed that series and their work. After that I wanted to see both guys in something contemporary.
Well, PHS's STRONG WOMEN DO BONG-SOON (Feb. 2017) was first and I enjoyed that series also. For some reason when PSJ's FIGHT FOR MY WAY (May 2017) arrived I think I had too much on my plate and could not work it in.
I am sort of in the same situation now with live watching 6 dramas. However one (SUITS with a terrific performance by PHS) just finished so know looks like the time for me to get to a PSJ contemporary drama.
