@seralovestteobokki is probably a Loanshark too.. and if any beanie is gonna be close to leveling up to 'Entertainer in training' soon, it would be Sicarius and Sera..

@pakalanapikake is a quiet loan shark.

And with Sic and Sera kinda quiet these days, I'd wager that @bammsie will surpass her rooftop and get to Loan Shark in no time. She's been the fastest leveling beanie.

7

@jenmole I don't wanna, I don't wanna! Content to stay at my level now..

7

@hades @kudoran @jenmole ENTERTAINER IN TRAINING IS SO HARD TO GET TOOOOOOO IM TRYING. ALBIET NOT THAT HARD BUT YOU KNOW
Also @db-staff is actually at the highest known level hehehe

Oh Pakalanapikake is a Loan Shark too?? Yayyy! And Sera definitely is one. Her and I have been the longest Loan Sharks... @bammsie Lmaooooo if you don't wanna level up stop posting!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

8

@sicarius It's too much fuuuuuuuuun! I need to zip my lips or smash my internet or something. When I'm with y'all, I just lose all cool and chatter away.

4

@sicarius I posted a while ago just like @bammsie said above, I don't want to level up, I want to stay on my rooftop forever =P . Wae ? 1) loanshark might be tiring job no.2 after the never ending days of errand boy and 2) that would only lead to entertainer-in-training aka slave of Kpop....nope rooftop for the win #sorrynotsorry x)

5

@jenmole, @bammsie is our overachieving maknae who will soon surpass all her sunbaes!

5

@bammsie don't worry I understand perfectly hehehehe how do you think I got to 13000 comments in a year??? By talking too much ofc. Now I'm shockingly more reserved hahahaha
Go little Bam go!
@kudoran hah! Loan shark is indeed a loooong level. Don't come hahaha

7

@ally-le @jenmole I just.. have a very excited mouth.

3

@sicarius I don't want to come and btw I can't come 'cause even when I was active it took me 4 months to level up from errand boy, so I think I'll level up from rooftop only end of this year or in 2019 lol x) , KyuHyun might come back from the army and appear in Njttw that I might still be stuck on my rooftop lmao x)

3

@sicarius June 22, 2018 at 1:54 PM

Thanks for your good wishes. But really -- it's hard to believe we're both LSWIAHOGs being as you've racked up nearly twice the points I've accumulated (since beginning to blab on DB in Feb. 2016). You and @seralovestteobokki are miles out in front. I'll just keep cracking wise as the spirit moves me. Or hold my peace and try to pass myself off as wise by dodging Foot In Mouth Disease. ;-)

4

@kudoran hahaha nawww but rooftops are cool anyway. 10/10 would live in one.
@pakalanapikake I will never ever understand how the levels work no matter how many times I have tried. At this point I don't care either haha it just happens when it happens.

5

I also think @raonah will be advancing soon, because the algorithm seems to put weight on how active your wall is and how many people reply to you. With the fanfic generating over 300 comments and counting, sheโ€™ll be swimming with the sharks soon.

7

@ally I only became a Rooftop Room Dweller a few days ago. I think it will be a while before I'm swimming with the (loan) sharks ๐Ÿ˜„

3

I do believe @mindy is pretty close to being a Loan Shark also. :)

5

@sicarius I told @bammsie that if she beats me to Loan Shark I will never forgive her :P

I love you, Bams <3

5

@sicarius I was able to level up quickly (for my standards) because of the comments with @obsessedmuch awhile back. Now, that she's left me to wander the fan wall, I had to find other means to level up.

@bammsie, you'll be a loan shark in no time, but please let @mindy get there first!

3

@mindy HAHAHAHAHAHA the race is on~

5

@mindy I really, really, really do not plan on it.

*takes a hiatus until October*

3

@sicarius I was able to level up quickly (for my standards) because of the comments with @obsessedmuch awhile back. Now, that she's left me to wander the fan wall, I had to find other means to level up.

@bammsie, at the rate you're posting and commenting, you'll be an entertainer in no time!

4

@jenmole Shhhhhhhhhh, no, no. Let me enjoy my Rooftop dwelling.

3

@jenmole yeah when I was active and commented lots (mostly with Muchie and Kaybee) it was easier to go up as well haha

4

@jenmole Mianhae for abandoning you ;)

Congrats on achieving Noble Idiot status -- without having to become an actual noble idiot. I must admit that reaching the Goblin's Underpants level triggered quite a bit of cringing. LOL. Mere conflict of interest? forgetaboutit! ;-)

3

Oh, I was scrolling down your fanwall and saw you already posted some, thanks @pakalanapikake!

2

@wishfultoki June 22, 2018 at 2:09 PM

Aw, thanks.

I am indeed watching LIFE ON MARS, but I don't recognize the Korean pop, although I heard some I really liked. I'm live-watching so many shows that I haven't been paying a lot of attention to the background music. I only just finally got around to posting the first three OSTs for WHAT'S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM a day or two ago.

I still have to do some digging for ABOUT TIME and COME HERE AND HUG ME because I love the piano instrumentals. There may be another show with OSTs & incidental music that I really like, but haven't had the get up and go to track any of it down. Maybe moving forward I'll be a bit more motivated or inspired. I never know when an ear worm will strike. ;-)

5

@pakalanapikake I rather enjoyed being the Goblin's Underpants as they belong to Gong Yoo.

I am however growing weary of errands, and wish to relax on a rooftop, preferably Han Gyul's rooftop.

Lollypip levels up the fastest because she recaps the most and recap hits mean more points in the really weird and inconsistent algorithm that is the dB levels hehehe

7

gosh like I said above we should have saved the levels and not the page link when a Beanie found it last year -_-
seriously the leveling up algorithm is so weird, can't figure it out ^^'

Who's watching "About time"? Currently at episode 6... Its kinda fresh for me to see that the connection between Lee Do Ha and Choi Mika are fast paced compared to other dramas. I think personally, It has broken the barrier of typical kdramas (where leads in kdramas falls in love/ kiss between ep 8-10) and intersting plot I must say.

I thought that I'll never get over Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk's love line in WLFKBJ, but thank you kdrama gods for this new/fresh pairing with Lee Sang Yoon (this guy is a 100% adorbs, i've seen him on liar game and twenty again. Can't get enough of his dimples haha).

Interesting how the flow of the story goes... what are your thoughts guys? ๐Ÿ˜Š

@Kang Maru
I'm watching About Time. I like the premise and the beginning, and I believe the show wants to make some serious statements, ... well ... about time, about how short it can be and that like the characters, we should determine how to live and spend our time well. I don't think it does a great job about analysing or suggesting anything in great depth, though, but there is always the question of what do we do, when we know when we or the other person will die.

What bothers me about the show is that too much is going on at the same time, of different levels of importance, but yet given quite a lot of screen time. For instance the business end of things with the fiancee, the first love's return and voice problems plus show problems, side character romance (Mi Ka's brother and her friend), Do Ha's family woes, Mi Ka's hospital friend's romance and the mystery around her, Mi Ka's family problems...

I guess I prefer a more focused tale-telling in the plot - just keeping Mi Ka alive and the missteps of the romance because of it, plus her getting her family prepared for the worst.... plus how Do Ha makes a success of the business on his own and whether Mi Ka gets to fulfil her dream of being on stage ... stuff like that. I thought that should be enough to fill at least 10 episodes without all the rest.
SPOILER
.
.
.
I will still watch the show though, especially now when the last 2 episodes this week give us a nice twist and a reverse way of doing the secrecy/noble idiocy cliche. Did not make the cliche any less frustrating, but the lie was a 'good' way to put the brakes on the romance.

I'm watching ABOUT TIME, and am up to date with it. The music, both in the drama that is being produced, and the background instrumentals, is lovely.

Lee Sang-yoon is one of my faves. In LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, he plays the #2 son, diving instructor and innkeeper at a family-run tourist lodging on Jejudo. Kim Hae-sook, currently playing Choi Michaela's elder friend Oh So-nyeo, is terrific as his Mom in the 2010 family drama. Great cast with a slew of fine actors. Fans of REBEL will get a kick out of Amogae (Kim Sang-joong) as a confirmed bachelor of a resort hotel executive who inadvertently catches the eye of the Japanese Chairman's CEO daughter. (She'd have to be blind -- KSJ looks fab in black leather when he commutes to work on his motorcycle. Seriously. Not to mention suits.)

*fans self*

Where was I? Oh, yeah. Back to ABOUT TIME. The recent arc with Lee Do-ha's hyung, Yoon Do-san (warmly played by Jung Moon-sung, who is currently portraying Namgung Min's rakish cousin in THE UNDATEABLES) is really touching.

Obnoxious chaebol widowed pater familias Lee comes across as an imperious jerk, so it's no wonder he wants manipulative Bae Soo-bong for a daughter-in-law. Save everyone a load of agita and marry her yourself, Pops. You two would be a joint-merger made in heaven. Harumpf!

That said, Im Se-mi is elegant and callously calculating in this role, a far cry from her kleptomaniac pickpocket in TWO COPS. Why she isn't an item with her hunktastic Chinese tycoon classmate is beyond me. He seems to really like her. Is it perhaps part of her long game?

The arc with Do-ha's first love was well done in my book. The angst didn't drag on forever, and the resolution was a satisfying "In your face!" to bitchy producer Beth. The woman is terminally pathetic in direct proportion to the money and power she flaunts. She thinks she's subtle, but she's simply crass in a fake-understated way.

I cannot abide Michaela's idiot mother. She is the personification of one Kdrama trope I detest with a passion. I'm hoping that Michaela was adopted or the stork delivered her to the wrong family, because this mother is a brainless loser. Na Young-hee is doing a great job as she parallels an entitled, low-rent version of Beth. Har. She and Sae-woo's mother from WOK OF LOVE should start their own Bankrupt Chaebol Wive's Club -- and butt out of their kids' lives. Grrr.

Been quite a long time since I last made a post on the open thread. I have this long break and a huge kdrama slump...what a bummer. The last kdrama I watched was Just Between Lovers which I guess I liked. I still have my regular kvariety tho with Running Man and Heart Signal 2(until last week anyway). I feel like not a lot of beanies watch(or even know of?) Heart Signal. If you havent, I recommend that you start watching this addictive cohabitation dating show that may or may not leave you banging your head at the wall(still fun tho).

Anyways, ive been watching sitcoms instead. I absolutely love Brooklyn Nine-Nine and am glad i started watching after NBC picked it up. Also watching Community but not as invested yet and starting The Office. Happy weekend to yall!!

Healer was my first drama and exposure to Korean media (I found K-dramas before K-pop) so there was a lot of cultural and linguistic stuff I totally missed -- which I then picked up on a few years later when I did a rewatch. It just added to my ETERNAL LOVE for the show! And it's still one of my favorite dramas I've watched!

Required fields are marked *

Omg your username! I can tell your first drama was Healer! I actually did some research on popular K-dramas before I took the plunge with Healer. I think I was reading some YouTube comments and people were sounding off their recommendations and Healer's premise appealed most to me (reporters and a night errand boy and running on rooftops). After Healer I watched Coffee Prince (hello Gong Yoooooo <3) and You Who Came from the Stars and I was utterly and completely sold on Korean primetime television haha. Miniseries format just works for me, I simply can't stick with eight+ seasons of an American show when it runs all year long and no season ever ends with finality unless it's been declared the show hasn't been renewed.

1

Yes @sunflowerdiva, Park Bong-soo. Crime has been my number 1 genre since tI began watching kdramas which is really not that long. My first 6 kdramas were all in the crime genre: HEALER, HIDDEN IDENTITY, SPECIAL AFFAIRS TEAM TEN, TEN 2, HEARTLESS CITY (made me a Jung Kyung-ho and Yoon Hyun-min fan for life) and CITY HUNTER.
I joke that when Lee Min-ho and Ji Chang-wook complete their Army service I would love to see them together in a HEALER MEETS CITY HUNTER series.
I have no idea for a story line but I think it could be a lot of fun.

2

In reply to your last comment... I haven't watched the other 5 dramas you mentioned despite hearing about them! (I MUST watch Heartless City, though, Jung Kyung Ho: YES. All the yes.) Everyone's told me that City Hunter isn't as good as Healer so it's best to skip City Hunter since I watched Healer first, haha. I do like Lee Min Ho! I think he's actually gotten better with age. (I started Legend of the Blue Sea for Jeon Ji Hyun but stayed for Lee Min Ho!) But yes, an action drama with LMH and JCW would be marvelous. I'd totally watch that!

0

omg i hope they bring these shows to the US netflix too! I've been wanting to rewatch Healer and I wouldn't mind checking out Moonlight to see the difference in subtitles.

I had a weird drama watching experience this week. Upon a Beanieโ€™s suggestion in last weekโ€™s WWW thread, I checked out Love Weaves Through a Millennium which is C-dramaโ€™s adaptation of Queen Inhyunโ€™s Man. It starts Zheng Shuang who is also the female lead of the massive hit Love O2O.

A little factoid about C-drama productions โ€“many if not most C-dramas are dubbed to reconcile the fact that since Chinese people grow up speaking dozens of dialects hence with various accents when speaking the official language Mandarin, it could be a jarring drama watching experience to hear the characters speak with different accents especially if it contradicts the story.

When I heard Zheng Shaungโ€™s voice in LWTaM, my immediate reaction is โ€œoh no, I hate this new dubberโ€™s voice! I love the one from Love O2O much better.โ€ Disliking it mostly because it is a bit too cutesy for my taste, I went to investigate if other viewersโ€™ have the same reaction as I do. And in the comment section, I found out that the show actually is not dubbed. It is her own voice!! So all is forgiven and rejoice! I could continue watching episode 1 so I can drop it a couple of episodes later for other reasons. ๐Ÿ˜…

The second male lead seems to be less of an ass (at least up to episode 3.) The character also seems to have more complexity but perhaps with the 24-episode count it is possible to flesh out his character in a more satisfactory way which is something I wished the K-drama version did...I wanted more growth from him!

It's interesting, because the voice has to be a part of the craft of acting .

I am not completely sure but I do think most actors have assigned dubbers but some dubbed their own voices post production since their speech might not be captured during filming, but more and more C-dramas now are going against the convention.

I've only ever watched 3 c-dramas. Love O2O, Mystic Nine and Only Side by Side With You. I thought something seemed off with the voices in O2O but had no idea it was dubbed. Their voices never quite match their lips. That's crazy. Off to see if my other dramas were dubbed. I will be heartbroken if William Chan's voice isn't deep.

Oh no.....but the good news is that William Chan's own voice is beautiful. He was discovered for winning a singing competition in Hong Kong. His Mandarin pronunciation is actually quite good but he does speak with a noticeable Cantonese accent.

You got through Only Side by Side? I was so bored, I dropped it after about episode 6. Does it get better?

Have you watched Iron Ladies @leetennant? I just started but am really enjoying this noona romance so far. It actually has women who behave their age (they are strong career women in their 30's) and I just got hit with a surprising relationship twist that I have never seen in an Asian drama. The male lead is very beta but much more appealing than An Qui Hui of My Dear Boy.

1

No @kimbapnoona, I have not. I might give it a try. I'm in serious drama slump mode, although part of that is my general mood.

1

It has its ups and downs but leave it dropped. The ending was disappointing. As was Mystic Nine. William Chan is my weakness but after those two I can't bring myself to watch anymore.

I love that more and more C-dramas are using the actorsโ€™ own voices since line delivery is such a big part of acting. I always feel that dubbing makes the drama watching experience feel more artificial and the world building feels unnatural since ambient sound is lost. But when I watched the historical scenes in LWTaM and hear how the actors poorly deliver the โ€œsageuk speechโ€, it makes me new found appreciation for the skills of professional dubbers. It makes much sense that when one is used to hearing professional Shakespearian actors watching community theater production of Hamlet would be a jarring experience.

Sometimes the dubbing is badly done, and even as a viewer who does not speak or understand Mandarin the disconnect between the visual and audio is distracting. I hope that the trend of letting actors use their own voices continues, and that it allows for more acceptance of different accents and pronunciations. Linguistic discrimination makes me ragey.

The dubbing never fully makes sense to me since China has always been a country of people speaking with various accents, although I could see how it would cause cognitive dissonance if the characters grow up together but speak with different accents. I remember a similar situation in a fairly recent American drama (I don't recall the name) in which that the actor kept his distinct British accent but his character is supposed to be American-born.

I think I need to see Love O2O. C-dramas are strange in that they do use dubbed actors' voices, and I can't really get used to it.

Yeah, dubs can take some getting used to. Love O2O is worth it though. As far as I understand it, the dub is because of the differences in accents. Plus, many people who understand Mandarin often still read the Mandarin subs. There are a few dramas that donโ€™t have dubs though.

My drama palate has an inverse relationship with the current state of affairs, so watching Love O2O is a good mental neutralizer. It might be the fluffiest lowest-angst-driven drama ever, and almost the entire drama is wish fulfillment. So I find myself rewatching it when crappy mood strikes.

@ally-le Yes, I second that you need to see Love 020! It was my third cdrama (after Bu Bu Xing Jin and When a Snail Falls in Love). It is abs. charming; one I thoroughly enjoy going back to dip my toes into its lovely little moments. Before committing, read the review at Fangirl Verdict!

I've had love o2o for a year now sitting somewhere in my laptop with many other unfinished dramas stopped at episode one ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ... With all your enthusiasm I will give it a second go right now...

Dubbing the voices of my favorite actors takes too much of the enjoyment out. Watching someone like Ji Chang Wook but not being able to hear his voice just won't work for me.

I completely understand! Watching Korean actors I am familiar with acting in Chinese dramas with different voices would be a jarring experience.

I really liked Love O2O

I don't watch C drama because of the dubbing. I always the impression that the voices come from nowhere. They are bland and flat for me.

I tried the C-drama, but couldn't even get past the first episode since I hold Queen Inhyun's Man so dearly to my heart, that nothing can compare.

Open Thread Week 72! Good morning! So much to talk about today. My sister in law just had a baby yesterday, her third, and with her husband Caucasian and she being Vietnamese, all her babies look perfectly Korean! Her middle child especially could pass for just about any oppa out there (but especially Hong Jong Hyuk). We actually had a discussion about this and I copied it on my fan wall several months ago. I think itโ€™s worth a trip back down memory lane, donโ€™t you? http://www.dramabeans.com/members/ally-le/activity/216711/ LOL. I had originally put a picture of his face, but then she (who is not on social media) made me redact it. He is stunningly adorable though, youโ€™ll just have to take my word for it! So, now heโ€™s a big brother to a younger sibling, and a middle child! But with that face, Iโ€™m sure he wonโ€™t be starved for attention. Weโ€™ll see him next weekend, but we have plans this weekend! Freethekimchi.com meeting tomorrow! We are FINALLY at the conclusion of Goblin and it looks to be a fun gathering. Amyโ€™s foreign exchange student from Austria is leaving soon, but one of his last requests was to come over and say by to the ahjummas! How sweet of him, right? Trying to figure out what to make stillโ€ฆ

In the dramaverse, we watched the first several minutes of Moonshine and Valentine and Nirvana in Fire. Two that we probably wonโ€™t continue, but the opening sequences of both are gripping in their own way. I kind of think that I would enjoy MAV if it stayed a historical drama because those kids were gorgeous and that boyโ€™s eyes were mesmerizing. NIF will need some real concentration in order for us to continueโ€”everything is so convoluted at the beginning.

The rest of the week was in anticipation of WWWSK, and it didnโ€™t disappoint. Iโ€™ve always had a thing for a man in a tailored suit and now I think I have a thing for a man in a tailored suit leaning against an expensive car, because, DAYUM, Park Seo Joon does that look so well x 2 episodes! *Hmm, I have an idea for the hubby ;)*

So, about Secretary Kim, when she doctors the CEOโ€™s cut on his lip the 2nd time:

Me: So, thatโ€™s redundant. I can see her helping him when he showed up on her doorstep with a busted lip, but in his office the next day? He can do it himself now!

Hubby: Dear, dear, if I had an assistant/secretary that looked like her, Iโ€™d run into things and tell random people to punch me daily if it meant she would nurse me back to health.

Me: *Rolling my eyes, but barely containing my giggling* Well, I guess itโ€™s probably mutual then, because if that suit walked into my office every day, Iโ€™d probably doctor him up even if there was nothing wrong with him.

Moral of the story: There is just too much pretty in WWWSK.

2nd moral: #thisiswhatmarraigelookslikekdramaedition

3rd moral: Did I mention my drama group is FINALLY finishing GOBLIN? After a year and a half? To Gong Yoo!

Tailored suits, especially beautifully tailored three piece suits are now my newest fetish. Who knew vests were so come-hitherish? But I suppose PSJ wears most everything well, and Kim Kang-woo in My Husband Oh Jak Doo did mad justice to both the rustic working man vests, and the tailored suits.

Congratulations on the new nephew! I could use a baby to borrow once in a while to rock, cuddle, and smell their head. Borrow, is the key word here.

Your husband sounds like a keeper. LOL.

Yes! They smell like baby powder and dreams and softness. Idk how to explain it.

8

Now there's an air-freshener scent for you. I rank baby head in my top three, along with sautรฉed onions and freshly-mown grass.

9

@tsutsuloo Freshly-mown grass is amazing. Adding to your list: peeling an orange, chopping up coriander, air after a rain shower

7

Apple pie? Child after a beach day? Men in gorgeous cologne?

1

And if they have that fluff of hair? Fuzzy fluffy baby hair is so soft.

3

@fencejumper, I love the smell of pavement in the summer after it's rained. Is that the 'air' smell you mean?

3

@cloggie Yes! Even the smell of grass in the air after a rain shower. It's so refreshing

3

@cloggie & @fencejumper Sometimes before a big thunderstorm there is a kind of electric smell in the air--hard to explain, but I like that one too.

Favorites: First morning coffee smell, cutting into a grapefruit or lemon, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. And lilacs.

2

I sniff babies' heads like glue. You can get incredibly high and intoxicated.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Evolution probably planted this new human smell to counteract the lack of sleep that they inflict on their parents in the early months.

I love baby-head smell too. I think youโ€™re right about sleep deprivation though; it probably keeps humans from eating their young.

11

it probably keeps humans from eating their young

That took such a dark turn @ally-le ๐Ÿ˜‚

8

@fencejumper Have you seen Pixar's short film "Bao", the one they aired before Incredibles 2? It's awesome and yes, parents 'eat' their young.

2

@fencejumper, but a realistic turn. 3 a.m. with crying baby is a dark time. Torturers learned from babies the effectiveness of sleep deprivation.

8

@outofthisworld I'm knee deep in finals so I haven't watched it yet but now I'm morbidly intrigued.

@egads I'm now scared to sleep over at my aunt's. She has 1 month old kid. I suspect there's a lot of wailing and dolphin shrieking

8

Hence the common expression, "I could just eat you up!" ๐Ÿ˜•

I worked at a men's shop for a while when I was teenager. Marking suits for the tailor was a learning experience my young mind was not ready for. However, I did learn a lot about fit, men, and how to deflect old creepers.
