Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

TeriYaki

Miracle That We Met: I was pleasantly surprised at how satisfied I was with the ending. My mind was tangled trying to imagine how Hyun-cheol’s dilemma over his two families could be happily resolved, so when he finally met Kai, I was prepared for what happened next. The key to this narrative was always the warmhearted and thoughtful chef Hyun-cheol and it was his wish that gave all of the characters the chance to be happy. I’d forgotten just how goofy chef Hyun-cheol was in his original body and was reminded how cute he was with his family. I suppose the miracle was that banker Hyun-cheol saw himself through the chef’s eyes and finally appreciated what was precious to him. Considering what a tyrant he was in the beginning, that’s no small miracle.

About Time: The life clock angle of this romance offers a layer of mystery that makes About Time such an unconventional love story. I like it! What’s grabbed my attention is the performance of Im Se-mi as Lee Sang-yoon’s almost fiancée, who hides her anger behind a pleasant smile. She’d been toying with him but now that he’s distracted, she’s turned into a tiger and I imagine we’ll see her claws soon enough. I can’t figure out why Lee Sung-kyung’s life clock reverses when she’s around her boss because I’m pretty sure the fiancée wants to kill her.

Regals

Sketch: After the first two episodes I’m digging this show a lot. There’s a lot of great cinematography throughout, especially the camerawork during the big action sequences (the boat fight with the gorgeous bridge backdrop is just fantastic). Perhaps more importantly, though, the setup for the actual premise of the show really dug its hooks into me. I love that there are two teams able to see the future and that they each have very different ideas of how to handle this power. And while Jang Tae-joon and Do-jin’s way of doing things is maybe a bit more morally objectionable, it still seems, for now, to come from a desire to save innocent people, so I’m hesitant to classify their partnership as strictly evil at the moment. And while it’s fair to say that what they’re doing is wrong, I always love when a show makes me sympathize with the bad guys enough to kind of understand why they might think their methods are justifiable. If only they didn’t also kill the innocent people who might try to stop them.

Just now catching up to ep. 3 of SKETCH. In the opening scene it suddenly hit me that its a face-off between Yeonsangun and himself, from THE KING AND THE CLOWN and SEVEN DAY QUEEN, respectively.

After 200 comments, no one will see this, so...and personally, finally several to watch after a long drought:
Favorite: Come and Hug Me. Tugs at every heartstring, though some might find it too much. But I love it. They did the horror elements really well.
2nd favorite: Wok of Love: Started out disliking the silliness, but Junho always makes me wanna hug him.
About Time: Gimmicky, but it's working for me anyway. And I love the musical scenes. More singing please!
Miss Hammurabi: Love the cast. Every time I think it's going to get boring, they surprise me. A little over the top sometimes, in the sense it gets a little unrealistic in the real world.
Lawless Lawyer: nothing new here. Without the Lee Jun ki action scenes it would be rather boring (so far).
Sketch: Um, rather gimmicky and I'm not caring for Rain so far. My favorite most interesting character is Lee Dong Gun, so much so that I've looked for his other dramas.
Chinese drama: Love's Lies. Dumbest plot I've ever seen, til about the 18th episode. I only watch for the cop and the doctor.
Secret of the Three Kingdoms: Gorgeous. And so is Elvis Han. Just finished Siege in Fog, very good but sad ending I guess.
Mystic Nine: So far I really like it. I had no idea what the "Republican Era" was in China's history, so between Siege in Fog and Mystic Nine I've learned enough to Wikipedia that era of history.
I'm not used to watching so many things at one time. This is difficult.

It's very slow paced to begin with, but gorgeous. I have only watched a few episodes, but I really like Elvis Han (and he play Sima Yi) and the lead actor who's name I can't remember...so I think I'll like the rest. I think it has high ratings on DramaFever.
I never trust ratings anymore. So much of the time it's either personal taste or like/dislike of an actor, and most often because it isn't subtitled in whatever language.

I am also enjoying COME AND HUG ME (wow!) and WOK OF LOVE.
Unlike you however I am really enjoying LAWLESS LAWYER. It is my first Lee Joon-gi drama and I love the cast, story and production. It is definitely different.
I have only finished a couple of cdramas which I enjoyed. it is the episode count that is a stumbling block to me. 50+ episodes per drama is common and I don't think I can deal with that. I know some kdramas particularly the weekend shows can run that long but I have never started one.

I'm really enjoying Lawless Lawyer too - didn't mean to make it sound like I didn't. I like their relationship and the action scenes the best.
Don't let the 50+ episodes per drama discourage you. They're usually only about 40 minutes each, much less than kdrama lengths. Plus the beginning and ending credit scenes take up another 4-5 minutes, so the episodes really aren't that long.

Just started on Lawless lawyer but the episodes counts are a bit off as watching them air on my local free to air tv. But it seems like it is one week off the airing in Korea, which for me is just fine and I am patient enough.

Greasy melo also known as Wok of love, for me it is for Jang hyuk I am watching, but also like the story unfolding with hoping the other gangsters gets integrate somehow into the storyline. I hope the writer has a full set of ideas till the end.

Investigative Couple so far a hoot for someone who used to watch American criminal shows, but promise of no romance is pulling me in to watch this drama. Meantime, I can fulfill romance quota with happier drama like Handsome Guy/Undateables and super melo drama Come and Hug Me.

For Come and Hug me , Jang ki yong boy sure can cry, his eyes all reddish, hope he is fine and just using tear inducers.

K-shows
**1n2d E217 : end of the Postech campus special, the students finished their project and enjoyed their time with the members, as usual 1n2d with citizens is always funny and heartwarming. New trip we got a new couple JongMin and DongGu be careful of the awkwardness haha, then DongGu previous female colleagues choosing JunHo ‘cause he’s cute with the caption “cute yaps baby” aigoo~ ^^ , I was so happy when they chose JongMin as the essential member, he’s been there since the beginning after all.

**The Genius rewatch :
*Season 3 E7-12 : E7 constellation game when the 5 alliance try to get rid of DongMin and HyunMin, but failed =P ! I was so happy JinHo back as a guest in ep10 and even more when he won ^^. Jang DongMin played so well using his own skills and his opponent’s style against him. Btw HyunMin reached the finals because DongMin teached him and protected him a lot, so it’s quite normal that his hoobae in life didn’t win.
side note : this final is one of my fav’ finals of all seasons because both truly deserved to be there and deserved The Genius title, on the other hand I watched it a bit bitter because it made me think “what could have been if we had got a SungKyu – JinHo final in s1 ?”

*Season 4 E1-12 : I would have made some change in the cast, I mean where is SungKyu ?!!! KyungHoon the troll king, the troll genius, the troll who confuse contestants and viewers : is he a genius or a troll or a troll genius ? anyway I loved him in this season he added so much chaos and fun, it became an unpredictable season mostly thanks to him. He became a certified King slayer by eliminating SangMin and JinHo, haven reached finals against DongMin, who he called the final boss in his journey to become the perfect “King slayer” but as he said DongMin is the most complete genius player in all season, so I was happy that DongMin won he got the skills of JinHo, the political power of SangMin and charisma, along with individual skills which he has proven in death match. So end of the rewatch, goodbye to the 3 kings Hong JinHo, Lee Sangmin and Jang DongMin who is now the King of the Kings lol. Thank you for this rollercoaster of emotions and see you either in s5 or a future rewatch.

I didn't really intend to follow any dramas while I had SO MANY K-movies to catch up, why wasting time on 16 lengthy eps smt to finish a story? But somehow take a look at newly aired dramas to see how K-dramas now, and end up hooked with Come & Hug Me=))). K-dramas had many good melodramas in the past (~10 yrs ago) but new melos recent years just focus on dramatic twist and mostly failed to deliver heart of the show that is emotion. This show so far has done thing right, the plot is still filled w unrealistically dramatic details, but the scene is subtle with emotional depth, the acting delivers, characters have weight even the supporting ones. I keep dwelling on the scene and actually forgot its many plot holes=)) Hope the show keeps delivering, it reminds me of my favorite melos Spring Waltz and Nice Guy, which have ridiculous plots but still sold to me cuz the delivery of each scene.

Hi mon chan. I like when beanies reference shows they have liked in the past. I have been around kdramas only since 2016 so there are many great shows I have missed.
Can you tell me why you liked NICE GUY/THE INNOCENT MAN (2012). I have never seen a Song Joon-gi drama and NG is available on DF. His role is described as anti-hero which I think I might like.

I loved Nice Guy. A long time ago someone here did a "10 worst endings ever" and Nice Guy made the list. What?? I said. It was my favorite ending ever. Just thinking about it still makes me cry. And honestly, I can't watch too many Song Joon-gi dramas because just looking at him makes me almost cry, he's so dang cute and cuddly. Even older and married he's cute and cuddly. But back to Nice Guy. What happened to them was the only way they could overcome their past. I thought it was just mind blowing and it was the only logical way to end and the only way they could be innocent.

@korfan,

I'm so glad to learn the fish has a name -- and it's not Wanda. LOL! Lord Goldfish can't be all bad if he dotes on Ninette. But she really needs oxygenation and filtration, and doesn't even have any tasty live plants to absorb ammonia. Does her human change the water every day himself, or do his minions? (Goldfish are notorious for their prodigious "output," not unlike Buster in WOK OF LOVE.) These questions have been weighing heavily on my mind for weeks now. Former fishmom here. ;-)

Lol at Ninette. I did not catch that! Or perhaps I did and forgot? I am still enjoying Suits. I really like that Ham was introduced recently to shake things up. The cases were a bit to easy for our team until now.

3

It could be that Ninette's fish bowl is a metaphor for Lord Goldfish's invasive scrutiny of all the employees. If he likes you, you'll be well fed and allowed to live in a nice cube farm. But he can flush you at any moment without warning. Yikes... I just scared myself.

@veeee June 3, 2018 at 8:08 AM

I'm still enjoying the show, but questionable ethics are beginning to get to me. We've only got 4 more episodes that I'm aware of. How Writer-nim is going to resolve the story & character arcs in that amount of time? Hmmm.

0

Hi @pakalanapikake. On Sunday mornings (US) I usually get a smile when I get to your comments. The new addition to the firm Attorney Kim did sort of say hello to Ninette.
On a serious note the return of Director Ham has really shaken things up at the law firm. Unfortunately I think Geun-sik (Lord Goldfish) is a lost cause. He has placed himself firmly in the Director Ham faction ( if there is one) and hasbecome his toady.
Once he started running around the firm to do his dirty work he reminded of that weasel Prosecutor Seo Dong-jae (wonderfully portrayed by Lee Joon-hyuk) in FOREST OF SECRETS.

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo,

Thanks for your kind words. ;-)

I thought it was cute that scheming former Prosecutor Kim played along with Lord Goldfish and said hello to his pet. Seriously though, I've been concerned with Ninette's water quality since I first spotted her fish bowl.

I may have found the origin of Ninette's name, which makes me think of the 1925 Broadway musical NO, NO, NANETTE! (which was revived in 1971 with the legendary Ruby Keeler). I had no idea that "Tea for Two" was a number from the show. Here's the scoop on the 2005 Spanish comedy flick:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninette

Director Ham pulled a fast one on Yeon-woo. Very disturbing. I'm wondering who else will end up as collateral damage. Lord Goldfish has indeed oozed off to the dark side, which I think has sealed his fate if Kang & Choi prevail in the slugfest with Director Ham. I haven't seen FOREST OF SECRETS, but I'm familiar with the tribe of Weasel.

I have to believe that Kang & Choi have done due diligence and concocted plans B through Z up their sleeves for dealing with Ham's eventual return. It would be nuts of them to not have industrial-strength contingency plans. On the other hand, Kang-seok and Boss Lady looked shocked to see Ham at the office. I'm wondering whether they might have a poison pill or two with which to fend him off.

The thought has occurred to me that the 36th Stratagem may come into play. When all else fails, run away. Translation: Collect your marbles, retreat strategically, and set up your own firm with like-minded associates. So what if Ham admits he embezzled client funds as a strategy to defang his opponents. If half of the firm resigns in protest, that won't look good for Ham. But there's probably a bunch of gotchas Ha-yeon and Kang-seok have to successfully skirt or resolve if they want to eject him permanently.

You always manage to watch dramas that aren't available to me. But I guess it's a good thing since there are way too many on my plate right now. I prefer bingewatching one, and here I'm watching 6 or 7.
Re a comment you made awhile ago about the female lead in Love Me If You Dare. I was thinking and re watching and realized she was always just flirty with him to begin with. She was strong in a different way. In the few Chinese dramas I've seen, women seem to be treated quite differently that we Westerners are used to women being treated. Quite interesting. Any comments as to this from anyone?

Aside from the perverse machinations of Psycho Killer Dad and Horrid Reporter, I'm enjoying COME AND HUG ME. In some respects, its tone reminds me of JUST BETWEEN LOVERS and LOOKOUT, but not as dark as the latter -- and this protagonist is a bona fide hero. Its examination of families of choice versus blood ties is down-to-earth and touching. Jang Ki-yong looks and feels as if he stepped out of LIVE. For Beanies who haven't seen that drama, that's a compliment. ;-)

Is there something in the bottled water all the Kdrama writers drink? We're presently having a surfeit of lawyer and judge shows, with at least one more slated for July when THE UNDATEABLES / HANDSOME GUY wraps up. DONG-GU DAEGUN will morph from a Joseon grand prince to a judge whose identical twin has a rap sheet, but it ain't musical. His Honor goes missing (sucked up into a twin cyclone and transported 20 years into the future, by any chance?!), and is impersonated by bro. Yoon Si-yoon is set to star in DEAR JUDGE on SBS.

Jang Ki-yong's performance in COME AND HUG ME has been a revelation to me. This is my first time seeing him in a drama.
The emotional tug I felt in the last episode (asking "mom" for a hug) recalled the emotions I felt watching PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and DEFENDANT.
(But the PD of P&P is directing LAWLESS LAWYER-go figure.)
Another thought. How can Kim Kyung-nam go from playing Joon-dol (Jung Kyung-ho's sweet brother in PRISON PLAYBOOK) to Son of Psycho Hyun-moo in CAHM.
He is giving a scary performance.

Jang Ki-yong caught my eye in GO BACK SPOUSES. It was a very nice performance. For a daffy diversion, check out THE BOY NEXT DOOR for a send-up of every Kdrama trope with a ribald twist. The episodes are short and made me laugh out loud.

Back to CAHM. The way Yeon-woo asked for a hug from Step-Mom got me right between the eyes. It reminded me of a similar request by Park Do-kyung in OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN. His vulnerability was palpable, and JKY conveyed it beautifully.

This is the first time I've seen Kim Kyung-nam (b. 1989), unless he really was in FAITH, as AsianWiki states without specifying a role. He's doing a fine job of being menacing -- and comes across as a chip off the old sociopathic block.

I subscribed to Dingo on YouTube awhile back with idea of checking out BND because of Choi Woo-sik. I have been a fan since seeing him my third kdrama SPECIAL AFFAIRS TEAM TEN (2011/12). He also had an important part in P&P.
Anyway, now that I am a bit familiar with JKY I gave BND a look last night and watched 6 episodes. Both those guys a very funny.
That was enough for one sitting. I will pick it up again.
(For those not familiar, BND is a 15 episode web drama with each episode a little less than 7 minutes each.)

Goody! I've been wanting to ask someone about PP. Is it good?

Recently, I am perplexed as to how certain PD can be so bad in one drama and good in another. Is it that no matter how good a PD is, he will suck if the material is bad? I am also curious as to how much an actor can influence the PD and/or writing. We usually think of it as PD directing the actor and actor follows. How about the other way around? Or the actor influencing how the writer writes?

Required fields are marked *

I could not figure it as well and I was telling people just watch P&P in place of LL.
P&P is a lot more like Miss Hammurabi. It had good writing super good acting and a very low key romance. The romance was almost not there. Our lead prosecutor was Choi Jin Hyuk (Lets take a moment and fan girl) he was a geeeeniiius! (But he is!) and lead girl was baek jin (and she was like go ara's character trying to be the most smart person but she learns) and the senior prosecutor was awesome, he was not there to stand for right or wrong but for his own self but I loved the way he did his every move.
Caution: I watched a bit long ago so my memory is not fresh (i watched it in around 2015-16) and I don't remember if there was some glaring plot hole. I think it was a show done right and super fun to watch.

2

I think about actor -director or any other its a two way relation but I have not watched LL lawyer after middle of Ep6 so I don't know but the revenge shows work a lot more on element of unpredictability which was not in this show, its highly predictable and moreover the writing is not great in LL, for example the scene where our lead girl was kidnapped could be done way better, the element of unpredictability was there, shock was there, the only risk the writer had to take was to find out a way for our smart heroine to escape and our lead not caring to come and fight for her. She is shown to be smart and she could use a few skills to get out and similarly with the scenes with punching the judge. These are the places where the writing binds up for a bad output. This was not the case with P&P.
And then there would be no need to mess up the court scene with fire extinguishers.
And now this led our lead to end up in jail but there are better and clever ways to do it. Now if I start rewriting I will do a script of the whole drama. I stop.

2

Hi @outofthisworld. PP is in my top 5 dramas. Very heavy subject matter.
Great performances by both the adult and child actors. Highly recommended.
Apologies for the condensed review.

I'm watching basically everything, so I'll just list the ones I like the most right now.

Come and Hug Me: Dark horse hit of the summer. This show looks amazingly bad on paper and yet amazingly good on screen. I am going to put all the credit on the cinematography and writing. Things are slowly introduced that make me hope for more, but we don't get it. Similarly, we don't have to wait long because they give us enough to satisfy our palate in the next episode. It's like those expensive 7 course meals with tiny delicate and delicious servings. jang Ki-yong is also holding the fortress up with his acting. ALL THE FEELS Y'ALL.

Wok of Love: The episodes zip right by which has to say something about this show. It is light and fun with a touch of whimsy. Not a super favorite, but definitely a fun show.

Mistress: AMAZING. This show is so good. It is spine tingly. The final episode is today, soooooo looking forward to watching it. Everything is about to happen. The pacing was wonderful throughout and the early scenes are finally about to come to light. A must watch.

COME AND HUG ME wasn't originally in my plans, but I liked Jang Ki-yong's nuanced performance in GO BACK SPOUSES enough to take a chance on it (despite the presence of Heo Jun-ho from BEAUTIFUL MIND, in which he was intense, and RULER, in which he was wasted). Somehow, Psycho Killer Dad did not terrify me, even as the scenes were suspenseful. His performance walked the fine line that enabled me to keep watching without freaking out. Well done!

WOK OF LOVE is my goofy pleasure. Jang Hyuk is in fine form. I've been having flashbacks to FATED TO LOVE YOU, and I mean that in a good way. Junho's Chef Poong is harder to grok, but I'm still enjoying his performance. And then there's Buster. <3

As for Buster, I think he's got a standing cribbage game with the mare in the next stall. Presumably his nibs is making a speedy recovery from surgery and whatever else has been ailing him.

I think everyone is going to be out of their trees soon with all the food pron, not prawn. ;-)

Poong is all over the place emotionally! Put yourself in his position with all he's lost and gone thru. Maybe he's going thru the 5 stages of grief and the last was anger. Now comes acceptance?

3

I missed the horse too! He made an appearance today.

I also have some flashbacks to Fated to Love You. I just want Jang Hyuk's character to have more screen time!

1

Perhaps MISTER ED (1961/1966) was reincarnated into Buster in South Korea.
(Notice I am maintaining the @pakalanapikake style for series titles.)

3

Speaking of Fated to Love You: I absolutely hated that drama. One of the very first dramas I ever watched so I wasn't used to kdramas and was appalled that she lost their baby. You-just-don't-do-that. They even named the fetus. I was so shocked. Plus, I had just watched Chuno, probably the 2nd kdrama I ever watched, and it seemed to me JH played the same character. I stopped watching, so I missed the 2nd half which redeemed the characters and the story.
And now I realize (as someone reminded me) a lot has to do with the director and the character's personality, not the actor. If someone can rec'd a JH drama where he plays a subtle character, please let me know.

He doesn't do that many romantic comedies and I think all the romantic comedies he does are pretty over-the-top.

I really enjoyed Shine or Go Crazy. It is a romantic sageuk where Jang Hyuk plays the estranged son of the King. He had to live on a mountain (for a reason that I forgot). I think he comes off the mountain because he has to either be the next King or protect the next King or something like that.

It is a straight love story with the actress from Hwayugi in it. She was really good in her role as well. This drama isn't a melo, it is actually pretty light and comedic in some parts. Definitely recommended. :-)

"He had to live on a mountain (for a reason that I forgot)."

As I recall, Wang So (the same historical figure that Lee Joon-gi portrayed in MOON LOVERS) was reputedly born under a bad sign, and that was why he was banished from court in Goryeo. But that was really only a rumor spread by his father, no less. It was Dad's way of keeping him safe from the infighting among his siblings.

In the neighboring kingdom of Balhae, a princess was born when a comet appeared -- a disastrous ("ill-starred") portent. Her mother managed to spirit her away before she could be killed. Later the kingdom falls, so there must have been something to the princess's unfortunate natal chart.

3

Someone on the fanwall has been watching Beautiful Mind and is enjoying it. @fencejumper maybe?

Oh, I forgot! Some beanies watched Money Flower and really liked it. @pakalanapikake would you call Jang Hyuk's character there more "subtle" than Lee Gun in Fated To Love You?

It's been quite a while since I watched FATED TO LOVE YOU, so I'm kind of rusty on the details. Lee Gun is larger than life, but is also complex, and goes through quite a transformation over the course of the drama. The show itself is a three-ring circus, so subtlety would be lost in the sauce. Instead, I'd say that Lee Gun is layered, and over time reveals (or discovers) sides of himself that are not apparent at first glance. His chance encounter with the Mud Snail Bride is a life-changer. Her humble family from an island in the boondocks is a far cry from his wealthy, scheming kin. Their warmth is what he's been missing his whole life. One of my favorite aspects of the show is the bromance between him and Director Tak (Choi Dae-chul). What a hoot.

Kang Pil-joo in MONEY FLOWER, on the other hand, is subtlety personified. And with good reason, given the ruthless proclivities of his employers. All I can say is, don't play poker with this guy. You'll lose your shirt. On the other hand, he isn't invincible, and his enemies (Lee Mi-sook and Lee Soon-jae play the main antagonists) are resilient and unremitting in their greed.

As a tale of revenge, MONEY FLOWER is an interesting contrast to LOOKOUT. Given the complexity of the plot, I really missed having recaps.

I think Wok of Love will be good enough for me. Among all the dozens of watchlist dramas, I'm going to take time to go back and watch ALL the scenes from WOL. The balance between lighthearted, danger, angst, sweetness, and double (sexual) meanings has hit the perfect balance for me. This is the best "threesome" I remember in a drama (ha, ha.)
I know the same actress is playing the gum lady and (her mom?) but since I ff thru too many of their scenes, I don't know if she's in disguise as the gum lady. I don't remember seeing any scenes with the two of them at the same time.

Okay, y'all are really making me want to watch Money Flower now.

Rich Man korean version also a good catch.the heroin is so cute so the hero hehe.the song and the storyline (im not watch the japan version) make me glue to the drama

Finished:
Miracle That We Met: After WTH ending of ep 17, I expected something good, but WTH, they took easy way out. It was not that I wanted a sad ending, but final ep. felt hasty(and weird at times). Overall it was good watch. Glad show had good ratings.

Mistress: Wow such good thriller. It started meh but became so good. A few things-
-Women's friendship was impressive.
-Actress who played Young-dae's other wife (Lee Sang-hee) was my favorite (She received the new actress award in 2017- Can't wait to see her in upcoming drama 'Life').
-Sadly Han Ga-in still needs improvement in acting.
-That was the worst dad ever (WTH Even serial killer dad has love for his kids-CHHM)
-What was with the ending? Are they thinking of "Mistress 2"?

Others:
Investigation Couple: FL is still frustrating, but this is good show. This show makes me think about death.

Greasy Melo: I am waiting- I'd like to see them succeed.
Miss Hammurabi: Loved the ending of ep 3!!

Suits: Now stake is higher with new rival arriving- I am enjoying this slick show.
Come Here and Hug Me: Why they linger in one scene so long? It must be hard do the acting for such scenes. Seo Ye-ji was also offered for the FL role (from January article), and I thought Seo could pull it off better than Jin Ki-Joo. Then again who would pass the opportunity of working with Lee Joon-ki (LL).

Sketch : Police team is so bad that it is frustrating. But I enljoy Rain and Lee Dong-gun's story. LDG character reminds me of "Bad Guys".

Lawless Lawyer: Story got interesting (with mom)! Oh no uncle (why these people never learn the lesson and act alone?).

Farewell Has Left: Most of people are pathetic, mood is gloomy, yet funny at times. I love Jung Woong-in scenes. Good acting all around.

Secret Mother: I didn't know they would reveal (mystery) this early. The ones I want to say 'Fighting!' the most are the kids- Parents are so busy with their own world problems.

And I watched-
Hold my hands tight: I stopped watching before because it was too melo but I had to try again because of the writer- Jung Ha-yeon (famous Saguek writer). So far it's been frustrating.

I don't mind the lack of recaps at all. The thing is, I miss Javabeans and Grilfriday's short take on dramas here in the "what we're watching " segment. It is what I look forward to each week :(
I hope they are okay. I'm concerned and dying to know what is going on.

Never thought I'll be in a slump. It was only last month I was watching 5-6 drama at a time, now I'm barely watching 2 dramas, Greasy Melo n Handsome Guy, but I'm only invested in Greasy Melo. I watched Miracle That We Met up until ep 12 I think, but dropped it when i find myself having to force-watch the drama.
Tried 1st eps of Investigation Couple and Sketch, don't feel the pull to continue watching. Not saying the drama is not good, but I guess I'm just really in a slump.
Ah yes, gave Lawless Lawyer a try up until ep 5, still couldn't get myself to care.
What is wrong with me??!

Nothing's wrong with you. I hated to say that I had a drought since Just Between Lovers, though people raved about Misty and Mother. I just couldn't get into them. I guess you have to be in a certain "mood" for drama genres at a certain point in time. At least there are several different moods to choose from right now.
And, during my kdrama drought I discovered Chinese dramas. There are some I absolutely love, and just like everything else, some I think are bombs.

Agree on the mood. No matter how good other beanies say a drama is, when you're not in the right, everything seems to fall flat. Crazy thing is, after watching this weeks ep of Greasy Melo (ep 17-18), I feel down and don't feel like continuing watching anymore. Maybe I should just stop current k-drama for a while, and just watch older dramas. I'm at ep3 of Producers, and I still like it.

Same. I'm watching old dramas. Full House 2 LOL.
I'd watch Chinese ones but Nirvana in Fire spoiled me for life and now I can't find one that lives up to such high standards.

How do you find Full House 2? Fun Fact : I've only watched FH2, but not FH, even though FH was quite big in my country back then.
Ah, the down side of great drama; it spoils you and you get too picky and now you don't have much to watch. lol.

1

Actually, I watched Nirvana in Fire 2 first and loved it so much I haven't been able to watch NIF, even though NIF fans don't like NIF2 as much. I've watched NIV2 3 times now. I think it's sad that NIF spoiled everybody so much they didn't enjoy NIF2. But it's also sad that I haven't been able to really get into NIF either.
I really loved Love Me If You Dare, and I don't think you'd compare it to a historical drama like NIF since it's modern.
So I've discovered Wallace Huo, Elvis Han (loved Siege in Fog), William Wai Ting Chan (Mystic 9). Siege and Mystic are the Republican Era, which I knew nothing about so it's been fun researching that era.
I'm looking forward to one called "The Wolf", the promos on YouTube look really good. It's supposed to be part 2 of some "Prince" trilogy, but I can't find any more info on it.

2

@linda-palapala I enjoyed NIF2 (I cried so much... Ping Zhang!!!! ), but it's a different kind of drama from NIF1. NIF2 has a family at the heart of the story, NIF2 has the central figure of Mei Changsu, and is more about "smart people outsmarting each other", as one beanie put it. Incredibly moving friendships too. I hope you can try it sometime.

@thequiet1 Full House 2 is a lot of fun! I'm almost finished. There is some unnecessary angst that could have avoided if people just talked (read, the main girl!). Full House the original was cute but kind of boring for me, even though it was such a big hit. I prefer Full House 2.

1

Yes, I was totally in the mood for NIF2 when I watched it. It was about family and Ping Jing's coming of age, which I love. I had researched and read and had friends tell me what NIF was about and I wasn't in the mood for it at that time. It's still on my watchlist, but I've been sidetracked!

Come and Hug ME: I got the urge to hug Doo-jin every time he shoots that longing eyes before tears running down his eyes. The crazy thing is that I cried along with him, getting too emotionally invested in him. Ep. 11-12, when he comes back to mom and then asked for a hug. SOLD! I'll give him a big hug and probably cry along with him just because he is so miserably sad at the time (we know why). As I enjoy the emotional ride, I kind of fear the aftermath when this drama ends.

Lawless Lawyer: Well, it is not exactly romance drama but Lee Joon Gi still got his romance story with the dating scenes, kissing scenes, and spend the night with the girl (which I think it is going too fast). Still pending ep 7-8 but seen the cuts, looking forward to catching up with it tonight.

Suits: how come I see politics everywhere????????!

Sketch: need to catch up ep 3 & 4 soon

Had a busy week and only managed to watch the third episode of Miss Hammurabi. I made a good choice and was surprised how riveting the sexual harassment case was. The coverage was different than how it is covered in other kdramas by addressing power imbalances, the generational perspectives, the effect on the family (since many korean families have the father as the sole breadwinner), the pervasiveness, and how easy it is to pass such actions off as innocuous (i.e Judge Han's daughter's teacher), especially when you're young and unaware. It was such a twist that the perpetrator's wife was also a sexual harrassment victim of his lawyer. It shows how the perpetrator must have known his sexual harassment gestures were wrong, because when it happened to his wife and would potentially happen to his daughter, he went for his lawyer's throat. It also shows that speaking up encourages other victims to speak up. I enjoy how our judge characters are able to have thoughtful conversations about all these nuances. And I know romance is like only tertiary in this drama, but I totally ship Oh Reum and Ba Reun.

My only quibble is that I wish we can hear some internal comments from Oh Reum, since we've been getting things mainly from Ba Reun's POV.

Sorry if this is an unpopular view, but I think Hug Me is just ok despite the v bad writing. It's cliched. The reporter is cruel without character development or real motive. The childhood romance is cookie cutter. The leads just stare at each other endlessly as reporters snap pictures; really hoping for more story here, it seems to have stalled the last few eps. There's very little narrative other than the serial killer dad setup which is interesting in a creepy way. The lead guy has potential, though I think the fact that he's tall and handsome carries him a long way. he was great in ajusshi don't get me wrong. The female lead is weak and it shows. Reporter lady, psycho dad and childhood male lead are played by v good actors so they have more depth than the writing allows them. I'm watching it for some of the acting, but it has real shortcomings. I disagree with the comparisons to JBL which was much better written, directed and acted.

I keep coming back mostly for the What We're Watching because that's the only constant, and the shows that aren't recapped are still discussed here, but it just gets worse and worse?

@pakalanapikake
Thank you for the book (The lost honor of Katrina Blum) suggestion last week, I haven't completed it yet, but I love the style in which the book is written. (I have to say that english translation is superb, it does not lose the touch of German original). (Though my german is not upto that level so I cannot read it in German fully without stopping by to look for words, I was forced when my english version had a few paragraphs missing!)
If you would like I would love to discuss the characters with you, I have a feeling that I don't yet understand our lead girl very well.

Seriously though..whats the point of putting out this bit if only two people from DB have submitted anything for a total of 3 shows discussed..........like idk whats going on behind the scenes but if you're gonna put something up, put more effort into it at least and stop half-assing it or just don't post anything until you're ready. Just some constructive criticism for y'all.

While waiting for ‘Hand: the Guest’ (Hope Gong Yoo can come as Cameo so I can witness this Classic 'Coffee Prince' reunion lololol)

So here I am feeding myself with:

Investigation Couple: Stella is the scene stealer, I like her lol

Greasy Melo: Kkangpae Ahjussi is seriously cute LMAO and off course Jang Hyuk never fail to delivery. I love Junho here, more and less he acts naturally. Jung-ryeo-won is the anti-heroine once again.

Suits: Jang Dong-gun is sooo irresistible and Park Hyung-shik is too adorable.

Sketch: I saw a different Rain in this drama.. A new light of Rain.

Lawless Attorney: Ewww~~~ Lee Joon-gi is so cringy LMAO.. But his cringy is charming ways..

I'm not happy with The Undateables. The plot is quite monotonous and i personally think that this type of hairstyle does not suit to namgoong, he look quite handsome with straight back hairstyle....like gentleman.
