[Drama sequels] City Lovers: Scarlet Heart Seoul

By @FatCat

Reading the comments under this month’s theme post was helpful because I was reminded of exactly why most of us like to watch K-dramas to start with. The length of the show is fixed, there is no chance of the plot dragging on for many seasons, the conclusion is almost always final and set.

But, there are so many kinds of dramas.

There are rare gems that have excellent plot, perfect length, and the best conclusion ever– we would never want a sequel to those, it’s too risky. What if they don’t turn out like the original?

Then there are the mildly good ones that leave us with an okay feeling. We kind of like/didn’t like it, but definitely do not want a sequel, no thank you very much.

There are also the fun and light slice-of-life dramas that we don’t mind having a sequel to. Certain dramas with open endings which make us want more, but regret the sequel (looking at you Mystery Queen).

Then the horrible ones. Forget the sequel, even the first season shouldn’t have existed.

And finally, the dramas with so much potential, the plot picking up nicely in the first half keeping us invested, and then leading to… nothing. It just ends, leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere. For which we need closure in a sequel. For me, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was like that.

It’s kind of amazing how this show with cast and plot potential just fizzled out in the end. Just when Wang So stepped up his game and decided to work only for himself and when Su finally woke up to the harsh reality of the Goryeo era (and the royals), I was all ready to enjoy the plot progression in the next episode, which never happened. I mean things happened but I felt like we had crossed the climax already halfway through the show.

Throughout the show, Wang So’s story interested me. He decided to take the throne for himself and be nobody’s puppet anymore. Ironically, although he got what he wanted, he ended up being quite alone. He lost his only ally, the astrologer, and the woman he loved, Su. Despite having power, luxury, and authority, he was lonely for the rest of his life, constantly surrounded by enemies. But I didn’t understand how he got the throne. Did he really work for it or did paths just open up for him in the form of useless kings who were bad for the country and had to be removed?

I felt that I needed a Part 2 of this, one where I get closure with both plot and the OTP. Since Su already came back to her current timeline in the end, obviously, she will run into modern day chaebol So in Seoul. It would be interesting to see the modern take on So’s family and the struggle for power.

Since the story would take place in 2018, difference in status won’t keep our OTP apart. It was a big problem in the past and one of the reasons that I was all right with them not ending up together. I’d rather have her leave than remain as his concubine because she can never be the queen. In modern era though, there should be no problem for them to be together, provided we don’t have the throwing-water-on-girl’s-face mom-in-law who has also hopefully not (physically) scarred her son.

Having this one big obstacle out of the way, I’m ready for chaebol So to maneuver his way to the top, past his scheming brothers (or cousins in this life) using both family and business politics, to not hurt the harmless brothers, and also be together with the woman he loves. I’d like to see an ambitious So who wants the top position for himself. Not just because his older brothers are unfit, but because he is power-hungry. And he also happens to love Su, who happens to be an important factor in the storyline somehow. (What? A person can be both.)

The ladies need not die of any illness because voila! It can all be cured in this era. The individual plot line of the other harmless brothers/cousins won’t have a very tragic ending because we have more opportunities than killing off characters in modern days. So we might get to see more sub-plots and character growth.

Now, if this sequel follows its own storyline and not the Chinese sequel which derailed even more than its original, I think we can have Moon Lovers in Seoul, a redefined version with a consistently good plot and a much better ending.

Wang So did tell Su (through the audience) that he WILL find her no matter where she is so, see you in another life?

@fatcat007 - Congratulations on being published! ^^; This is a great write-up. I'd never thought about it, but suddenly I want to see this modern day sequel too!

Also, Scarlet Heart is the first drama I live watched. It was so addictive despite all its flaws. Yes, I could definitely do with this season 2.

@fatcat007!! What a great essay!
Now I want to see this too... The modern day version in the C-drama version was sadly disappointing (Amnesia?!?).
It could be a shorter, crisper production and we know that these actors have the chops to pull off great things. now I am getting impatient to see it! arghl!
My only request is that it have a different director. One who doesn't just know how to frame close up after close up....zzzz
Thanks to you, I will be imagining this one for a while in hopes that... some day....??

Thank you Rukia :-)

Yes the modern day version of C-drama was really disappointing, I literally fast forwarded to the end & even the final ep had me pulling out my hair.

Excellent idea for the sequel though, short & concise without too many close ups. Yes, great idea indeed <3

For a second there I thought this was a news post and there actually was a sequel coming to us. Now I kind of wish there was.

I loved this drama as much as I hated it, maybe a tiny bit more than I hated it. However, if there was a sequel to fix that mess I would happily welcome it. And this time know that nothing can compare to the original, which is still my favorite Chinese Drama.

You’re not the only one—I thought it was a news story as well, until I saw the author! Great job, @fatcat007! I only saw the first episode of this though and probably won’t watch the rest of it. However, I would watch a sequel, exactly how you’ve laid it out!

@fatcat007,

Thanks for your essay. Sufficient time has passed for me to reflect on MOON LOVERS without becoming terminally depressed over the missed opportunities. Some parts of it were excellent, so I'll just remember them with gratitude.

Despite the vertigo-inducing camera work, there were interludes of gorgeous and emotionally-moving cinematography. Lady Hae's last stroll with Wang Wook is one scene that lingers in my mind, as does that of the cloaked Wang So sheltering Hae-soo in the rain, and his successful rain ceremony.

If Wang So & Co. were to return/reincarnate in the future, they may actually have already done so in 2018 in Gisung. Instead of being a chaebol, Wang So became a lawyer. ;-)

Lawyer Wang So is an excellent image 😎

Also, yes, the moments that you pointed out have stayed with me as well, (probably the only moments I remember, & the final ep) but that's exactly what i wanted to point out, those particularly powerful moments happened in the first half of the show, I was expecting more such moments in the second half but I didn't get much. That's why I felt, there were no more exciting eps in the later half (but that's just my own take on the show)

@fatcat007,

Our expectations were set and raised by the events of the first half of the show. Writer-nim trained us like Pavlov's dog to anticipate more luscious cinematography and bereft Wang Wook contending with Wang So for Hae-soo's heart -- and then turned Hae-soo into a cypher while our hero fought his way to the throne, only to find out it was more like the electric chair in the long run. But at least we got to see His Hotness Wang Yo sporting the Guyliner of Evil and jewelry tastefully coordinating with that of mom Queen Yoo NeverShouldHaveHadKids.

*fans self*

Hong Jong-hyun's villainous turn as Wang Yo was a unexpected delight. He truly gave Lee Joon-gi a run for the money in the Handsome Badass department.

Lady Oh's arc was gorgeously heartbreaking, but felt squandered on her subordinate.

I kept watching MOON LOVERS because I wanted to see Wang So reunited with Hae-soo in the future timeline. Even if the were unable to be together in the past, they'd have another crack at it in the reincarnation sweepstakes, right? Um, no. What a letdown.

If Hae-soo could reappear in her own timeline, why couldn't Wang So pop up in the future, the way she had popped up in the past? There was no eclipse scheduled? Sheesh.

Have you seen The King Loves @pakalanapikake? Hong Jong-hyun had much better mane of glory and minimum eyeliner. Contrary to popular belief, I found TKL more captivating than Seven Day Queen (or maybe that's my Yeonsangun fatigue speaking).

Aha! Hong Jong-hyun starred in The King Loves as well, he kinda earned the name Wang Cliff because in both dramas he jumped off the Cliff of Doom and came back kicking and swinging..

4

@wishfultoki,

You betcha I live-watched THE KING LOVES -- with bells on. ;-)

HJH indeed had a swoon-worthy mane in TKL.

I hear you about the Yeonsangun fatigue. On the other hand, REBEL and SEVEN DAY QUEEN were really well done, so for me 2017 was an embarrassment of sageuk riches. ;-)

2

@pakalanapikake Cool, I marathoned TKL after finishing Seven Day Queen. Indeed, we were spoiled by last year's sageuk splurge. I only have 100 Day Husband lined up in addition to Mr. Sunshine for 2018.

Yoon Kyun-sang as Gil-dong fell off what came to be called the Cliff Of Non-Doom in REBEL.

I thought there was going to be a sequel. Knowing the Chinese had a sequel, I guess I assumed this would too. Because that ending was just terrible. It's not Black level terrible because I wasn't as invested in this as I was with Black. But it was terrible in a 'why did I watch this show at all' way?

When she got back to the future and went back to her life, it was almost as though the show was saying the entire story had no point. If she didn't change, and her life didn't change, and history didn't change then why did we watch a bazillion episodes of this show?

Having her meet up with with him in modern day Seoul and finally getting a slice of happiness in this crappy world would have elevated the show for me.

Having said that, I'm not sure I'd want to watch another 16 to 20 hours of them overcoming obstacles to be together so maybe I don't want a sequel?? *

*everything I write comes with a Jisoo caveat. If Jisoo is in it, I'm in. I really enjoyed him in this.

@leetennant ChinguMode,

I thought I'd read that there was supposed to be a sequel, too. A movie. Did I fall victim to HypnoToad and get mesmerized into believing that I'd read that somewhere?

Or did a bunch of footage end up on the cutting room floor during postproduction, and the cast was no longer available for reshooting, so that was it?

Heck, I would have gladly watched a single-episode drama special as an epilogue if it meant getting proper closure. But no way would I sign on to watch at least 16 more hours. Once burned, twice shy.

Man, do I hear you re: that feeling of futility.

Convincing myself that Wang So reincarnated in the corrupt kingdom of Gisung and met a sharp cookie who studied hard in school -- who joined forces with him to overthrow the evil tyrant -- works for me.

@wishfultoki Riiiiiiiiiight, the whole "twin/just-kidding-but-I'm-still-your-sister" thing 🙄🙄🙄

@bbstl You laugh now, but if only you just watch the sequel to the Chinese version, then you'd actually understand that what all this madness is that we are saying, in terms of plot points and such, is actually what happened in the drama, and then you'd want to flip a table.... or poke someone's eye out

4

@bebeswtz I'm thinking the eye I'd want to poke out would be my own! That sounds just AWFUL😱 and yet hilarious.

4

@bbstl Scarlet Heart 2 traumatised me so badly that I refused to watch reincarnation stories again for a long time. Just die once and for all. Don't drag the makjang on in another life.

I know so many are wounded by the ending of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart. But knowing the disastrous result of the sequel of the C-version, I was never the one to expect a sequel.

If only, I would want a total remake of the same Goryeo version. With Lee Jun Ki (with more meat) and Kang Ha Neul a must stay as 4th and 8th Prince and I still can consider IU still playing Haesoo but bringing in her A-game from "My Ajusshi" and please....no PD Kim Gyu Tae and a totally new writer.

But the otp will still not end up together because Hae su is of lower birth so she can't be his official wife. Which was the reason of heart break for so many viewers.
But I'm still in for this if I can see more of Wang So being totally awesome 😎

This would be a fun sequel - and why not, they did it for the Chinese Drama!

I 110% agree with your comment about why we love k-dramas. Whenever people are surprised that I watch pretty much only programs from Asia, I tell them that I like that these dramas are (for the most part) pre-planned with a start and finish, without going on and on until they gets horrible and are no longer renewed. I don't know if I've actually seen an American show from start to finish, and that includes the cartoons of my youth!

I think any decent adaptation or sequel would ideally explore the following ironic aspects of the Chinese adaptation that made it so compelling: (1) the heroine is an unwitting catalyst in the historical events she attempts to avoid or change; (2) her wisdom and foresight become a lifelong burden and the source of regrettable decisions; (3) she is destroyed by the struggle to adapt to a different time period in which her own agency is both comparatively limited and of great historical import (or so she is led to believe); (4) the prince with more modern-day sensibilities and a disinclination to rule becomes the most tyrannical; (5) those engaged in the struggle for power are ultimately rendered powerless in one way or another; (6) her romances are doomed from the start because she is inevitably forced to deny her modern self; and (7) knowledge of documented history becomes a misleading or untrustworthy guide to actual events.

Personally, I would not be interested in a Korean sequel (though I wouldn't mind seeing some of the same actors together on a different project), since I think the Korean adaptation downplayed or squandered many of the aspects mentioned above, as well as the pivotal role of the heroine, who is much more interesting and developed in the Chinese adaptation (from what I recall). A better Chinese sequel would have to reexamine and possibly change the themes explored in the original. I would start by exploring Ruoxi’s guilt. Ruoxi seems to embrace a predestination paradox. Although she came from the future, she sees herself as part of a causal loop in which she creates the circumstances that doom the princes. However, it’s equally possible that she was not part of the original events at all. In fact, everything that transpired could have occurred before without her involvement. In other words, occupying the body of an 18th century aristocrat’s daughter may not have made any difference when she relived the past firsthand, but perhaps it has some relevance for her own future.

Any modern-day sequel would have to explore her true role and why she traveled back in time. How were events from the Qing dynasty related to her contemporary life? Also, the main source of her internal conflict in the original is that she is trapped in the wrong time and place, aware that everyone around her is doomed, ultimately blames herself for perpetuating their fate, and cannot help loving the wrong person, someone whose actions as a tyrant lead to the execution and imprisonment of the people she cares about. A sequel would have to have some related purpose or theme in which Ruoxi reaches some epiphany about herself (and the people she loves), or it’s just some shallow rehash of the reverse harem scenario for fans. Also, the fourth prince should be the villain (at least at first). While I think the 4th prince’s despotic descent was jarringly executed in both adaptations, the tragedy of it was fitting and inevitable, so I’m not sure...

... what a modern-day sequel would achieve, particularly if the purpose is to add some false happy ending. Ruoxi would have been happier had she fallen in love with the 14th or 13th princes in the Chinese original, so it might be worth giving them a chance in a modern sequel if happiness is the goal.
The Korean version made the 4th prince more sympathetic as someone with a traumatic childhood and the most likable love interest. I can't imagine Su ending up with anyone else, but he would still have to defeat his inner demons.
