What time is it in Korea? Has Mr. Sunshine been aired there yet? I have it set on My List in Netflix but it's inactive until tomorrow. :(

It's 10:40 pm in Korea right now. I'm guessing it's airing there as I'm writing this. However, I don't know how long it takes to show up on Netflix after it airs there. Hopefully not too long!

Why are ugly people allowed on TV in the USA? I'm not saying, "not ideal". I mean UGLY. I've never watched a singe E. Asian tv series with anyone I would criticize.

It's just a 24-hour wait-- you can do it! It will take the subbers a little bit to get it subbed too.

Today I'd like to talk about The Undateables and especially Hwang Jung-Eum's performance. I really liked her in Kill Me Heal Me and She Was Pretty but I feel like something is off in her performance. In the romantic scenes she is really stiff like she doesn't want to be touched. I might be making a leap here, but she got married & had a baby since those shows and now I feel like she is just not committing to the character's romantic feelings. She's great when she's talking about wanting to break up and completely sells that she's 100% over Namgoong Min's character... the problem is she's not supposed to be. I don't understand this. Namgoong Min has chemistry with everyone. He has chemistry with everyone else on that show. He has chemistry with inanimate objects. Here is a clip of him showing chemistry with a light switch (... I'm not kidding)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BkrZX6KAnXn/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=6sq5cu0vseu3

The show is not really that great but it has to be carried by the actors' chemistry. I feel like poor Namgoong Min has cranked his efforts up to try to compensate for her and it's just making him seem even warmer and charming than normal and her icier in comparison. If he turns up the charm any higher Junho will appear on set.

I actually had the opposite opinion on HJE's performance in the Undateables, I thought she was overacting too much? I agree that her performance in KMHM and even She Was Pretty were Great, but I dropped this drama bc of her acting

It's true that Hwang Jung-eum was almost frenzied in the beginning. I have no idea if this is a matter of the PD or the actor overcompensating. Thankfully, she relaxed and toned down her energy. (She's still adorable and positive, just less shouty.)

After watching a couple of episodes of this, I can see what you're talking about. Her character does seem a little stiff in certain scenes, although I'd say not in others so she comes across as inconsistent. I don't really know what to attribute it to, other than perhaps the director's instructions and/or the way her character is written.

I know her character is presented as someone who had that bad breakup so I can understand if she has some trepidation in getting so emotionally involved with someone again. That breakup was so long ago, but at times it seems she never really got over how it all happened. I have seen Hwang Jeung-eum in many other dramas and she can commit to a character so who knows what's going on.

On a different note, your comment, "If he turns up the charm any higher Junho will appear on set" made me laugh! Too funny! :)

This is just my opinion, but I've always felt that her kiss scenes are awkward in all the series I've watched of hers, be it KMHM or SWP. It stands out more because the ML will be fully into the moment whereas she doesn't even move her mouth. It's the same case in undateables as well.

3

Required fields are marked *

@alessar—Thank you for the IG link. That made my morning.

The Undateables/Handsome Guy and Jung-eum is my first exposure to Hwang Jung-eum and I attributed her romantic coolness to her character's past heartbreak. Since the breakup happened the same day her mother died, it was likely the worst day of her life. Although Hoon-nam had asked to date her, there were no expressions of “love” between them.

Let’s see what happens in the second half of the series, now that the OTP has reconciled and revealed their vulnerabilities. It will be a shame if she doesn’t warm up—she might need more practice to separate her acting from her family life.

Required fields are marked *

I guess I've never thought of her kissing scenes, well I guess that says it right there, except for her partners cause she has had some good ones. My first thought is also related to her husband, she's worked with Namgoong min before on Can You Hear My Heart for 30 ep as her husband is a non actor maybe he has issues with their perceived closeness since they had ties before he even met her. But maybe I'm not giving him enough credit.

Required fields are marked *

I find her unlikable in almost everything she's been in, but I agree that she had more chemistry with her costars in the past, which made her shrieky, over the top performances tolerable. I actually think she's better in this one, despite lacking chemistry with Namgoong Min. BTW, the Junho comment CRACKED ME UP. Love him. And them. <3 <3 <3

You know what, I'm dying to see Hwang Jung-eum in a melodrama again. I've seen her in romantic-comedy after the next, and always feel like she's playing the same person. She was haunting in Secret. Yes, she overacts, and that was perfect for a character who had been COMPLETELY screwed over by the world. I want to know if that was just a fluke, or if melodrama is actually where most of her talent lies.

Maybe that's why HMKM worked so well. It did have that element - and if you recall she was hella shrill the first 4 eps and then toned it down and it all clicked.

She's totally typecast herself. She really is so much better in melodramas, basically anything without comedy. Rom-coms are not her strong suit, hopefully she will take a break from them now and return to melos or literally anything else bc The Undateables has shockingly bad ratings considering its stars. It actually sunk to below 3% this week :(

I had a break from Japanese dramas and now when watching I was surprised by myself how harsh I'm now with most of those actors. (visual like) They're so pretty or handsome just I don't know why they don't go to the dentist when teenagers to get their teeth straighten. I became a monster!

😂 Shan Shan's eyebrows do remind me of cute fuzzy caterpillars permanently lodged above her beautiful eyes. I remember reading that the Boss and Me production company hired a Korean stylist team for the cast and her eyebrows perhaps were on trend for Korea when it was produced in 2014.

I dropped Boss and Me after a few episodes. I couldn't get pass the eyebrows!

3

@bcampbell1662 Beverly, were those pearls? I think together with the rings I somehow assumed that was one of those Mardi Gras necklaces made into a bracelet!

I always love that what is a negative for me is a positive for someone else! It makes me feel like my suffering is not for null. So I am glad you liked the bracelet @giegie0384! Now we just have to find somehow who actually only continued to watch the show BECAUSE of her eyebrows for @jenmole.

I'm pretty sure Japanese actors get considerably less plastic surgery. I like seeing more unique faces (like, I'm never going to mistake anyone for Ishihara Satomi), since sometimes I'll look at a Korean singer or something and think they look identical to a thousand other boys. Having such narrow beauty standards causes those kinds of problems.

(I agree with you about teeth. I have a thing about teeth.)

2

Required fields are marked *

It's funny but I have the opposite reaction, especially to British shows versus American shows. British actors get to act without having to have face lifts and braces. I kind of like it.

3

I do not get your point with the Japanese teeth issue. It costs nearly or over 10K to do orthodontics job done here in Japan and many orthodontics practice do not offer easy installments with credit cards unlike American practice. Each dentist visit is charged extra of 30-50 dollars along with 10K . So I bet talent or actors agencies here in Japan are not that willing to commit that kind of sum for new comer actors.( and it takes more than three years to finish all the process in Japan)
Since America brought in this trend that everyone should have pure white and straightened teeth, lives of mothers in Japan such as I have extra financial burden for our kids. My daughter hates her teeth because unlike those American(mainly American, I guess) actresses/actors, her teeth were uneven and not attractive. She even cried over her teeth many times. My American husband refused to listen to her saying that her teeth are not in bad shape. He believes that having white and straightened teeth is a new thing and he does not like the new trend at all( a conspiracy by dentists, according to my husband!). But I finally gave in after so many her pleas. Please please do not impose on or fuss over teeth so much.
One might find not so straight teeth a flaw but for others it might be a charm.

I see fake boobs, fake double eyelids, face chin etc etc in KDrama enough, I sometimes prefer natural looking guys even with not perfect teeth because WE ARE HUMAN!!

I actually detest someone like Park Ming Young because she is so plastic ( her eyes, nose, chin and her boob etc)and I feels that she always wants to show herself pretty so that every act of hers seems calculated to make her look pretty. Her artificial prettiness does not last unless she continue putting more cosmetic surgeries then she would look so unnatural as she gets older. Her look makes Park Seo Joon look much more human with crinkled smile over his nose. That is a blessing on PSJ's side.

I didn't know that it's so expensive. I come from a little country in Europe where there's this covered partially by health insurance, unless you want to have invisible braces it's more expensive. Sorry, my bad. I should check it with Izumi, but she's in Japan right now. Idon't like bleached teeth, or perfect ones like "american smile" one either. Now I understand why there're lots of foreigners coming to see our dentists. It's cheaper, even without insurance, like in other countries.

Required fields are marked *

I hope that you know that I did not mean to criticize you for this.
The Japanese insurance do not cover anything to do with fixing our appearances for the look. I wish some procedure should be covered because it is for a practical reason as well.
I have checked five orthodontic here and the cheapest was something like 6-7K but there is some risks involved so it was no go for my daughter. A dentist who graduated from a prestigious one can charge more.
Yes my kids' cousins in the States got the American smile but it is so white, it seems a bit odd to us.
I can guess where you live. In fact my Swiss friend went there to fix his teeth. or if you live in the Med, Malta? I suppose?

Required fields are marked *

I live in France now, love has no boundaries 😄, but I come from Slovakia. They didn't consider basic (traditional ones) braces as cosmetic procedures in the past, don't know the current situation, but in lots of cases, especially for kids, it is considered as a malformation of dental area which can cause deformation of jaw. My sister had an accident as a child - lost her front tooth, we didn't have car, were 5 minutes late for dental emergency because it took us ages to find that missing teeth and it completely badly influenced the rest of life of my sister and she lost any confidence. Insurance didn't cover the surgery and tooth replacement when she reached 18, so it cost us like a car to fix her long lasting problem. She was not lucky and still suffering from complications and allergy to implanted bone, but finally they've realized she needs braces. It won't be covered, but I hope she would be much happier.

I myself have bad experiences with dentists in Ireland and here in France is quite complicated to find a good dentist, because they're overbooked and it takes them several times to fix one teeth. Whenever I go home I try to see my dentist I had before, he is all the time breathing hard when he sees the work done, but he's going to retire.

1

I could be totally out in left field (meaning, I don't know what I'm talking about) but is taking your daughter to Korea for orthodontics a possible solution?

0

So I googled it and it looks like my native country became a hot spot for dental tourism even for some other european countries. There're some dental clinics specialised for English speaking tourists because even with the cost of plane tickets is less expensive.

Yeah. They extended the offer to Song Joong Ki but until now he has not confirmed anything. Most recent I read that he is holding his first FM (since getting married) end of this year, so I have my doubt that he will do "Asadal".

Tbh, I am not a fan of SJK and I prefer my bias either Kim Nam Gil or Lee Jun Ki to take on this role, especially knowing the opportunity of working with such a great director PD Kim. Seriously, idk which actor would turn down an offer working with him because he's been producing magic after magic and definitely one of the best in the industry. Lee Seon Kyun was right with his decision because Park Dong Hoon is probably his life's work.

2

The original definitely went dark, although I personally felt it was trying so hard to be provocative that it actually had less impact than it could have, especially since some of the character choices felt highly improbably. On the plus side, the lead actors are really strong, and if you're a Kimu Taku fan, it doesn't skimp on the steamy sex scenes (just putting that out there).

3

Really, @wonhwa? You don't get a lot of those in Japanese drama. The closest I can think of is Last Cinderella.

I saw that 30 but 17 is coming on Viki in a couple of weeks and I'm weirdly interesting the premise: a woman has been in a coma for 13 years wakes up and suddenly finds herself to be 30. Her body has grown older but of course her mind hasn't changed from when she was a seventeen-year-old.

I think a lot of us know what that feels like?

They just told us the dates which were 19 to 21. So our teachers assumed that 19 would be arrival and registration. We contacted them over and over to tell us the timings because we had to book our flights and they made the excuse that they do not send the timings when reality the gentleman responsible for inviting us had made a mistake and forgotten to give us the timings. We were arriving on 19th at 2 pm and the quiz was starting at 4 (they told us this when we told them our date of arrival). Then our flight got delayed by 1 hour and we could not make it on time. I was so upset. I almost started crying when I called my mother to tell her that we missed the quiz. It was not expected from a school where my country's chiefs of armed forces have studied

OT week 74. Hi lovely Beanies! I really hope everyone had a good week at work, school, home, wherever you are! I’m well, yay! And just in time, as we are going to be going on our anniversary trip this week to Mexico. Our honeymoon was there, so this is a second honeymoon of sorts. Thank God for grandparents to will keep our kids for the week. And lots of friend time this past week, adopted a stray cat, and may be going to Korea next year (got to convince the hubby)!

On the watch-list was The Legend of Fuyao, and we’ve caught up to episode 20, I believe. I’ve been watching between naps and such, so I don’t really know what’s going on, but it’s still really pretty. Fuyao (in disguise) is a consort to the fake prince/king now, and misunderstandings must ensue.

And WWWSK is still capturing my attention, lots of making up and kissing, figuring out how to go from boss and subordinate, to something more on equal footing, which is a blast to see. I still have the rest of ep 10 to finish, so haven’t seen the BTLIMF couple goals yet, but hopefully will before we leave the country.

And we are still talking about Yang Mi (Fuyao):

Hubby: You know, I don’t even find her sexy, I just want to hug her and cuddle her forever!

Me: OMG, you sound like every fan-girl ever! Like how I just want to cuddle and hug Park Bo Gum and keep him in my pocket for a rainy day.

Hubby: That’s just weird and possessive.

Me: *Goes back to secretly wanting Doo-joon, Hong Jong-hyun, Park Hyung-sik, and now Park Seo-joon around to hug and keep in my pocket for a rainy day*

Moral of the story: I don't think I'm weird and possessive, I just have a very active imagination.

2nd Moral: #thisiswhatmarraigelookslikewuxiaedition

3rd Moral: Mr. Sunshine is this weekend! (I really wasn't going to say anything, but I couldn't help myself!)

Thank you for the pool clip. (Is already seen the other one.) I'm laughing still at how they showed them under water as if in at least 8ft of water but when they stood up it was at most 3ft. But that's okay cause it's no more unrealistic than all the other "foreplay". Still laughing!

@frabbycrabsis
By "art", you mean Ethan Ruan's legendary well-proportioned upper torso, right? Blessed indeed!

Happy Anniversary @ally-le!
It's good that you get to go away to celebrate. Although it's my 25th Anniversary this year, one thing after another led to no official celebration. However, after getting to my time of life, a day in itself is great as an occasion, but actually there's the whole year to celebrate in and other ways of doing so (am I just comforting myself???) 😉 so it's not an issue to me.

Have a great time and come back safely! 😄

Thank you and congratulations on 25 years!!! I think that's a milestone few people reach anymore so it's a testament to you and your husband for making it that long! We don't usually make this grand a gesture, but it worked out this year.

Thanks! There were other years when we did manage to make a trip for the anniversary. Our kids are older so easier to jettison them. 😂 But we do have grandparents around so we felt safer. I see no reason why we cannot celebrate the 26th or 27th etc anniversary in equally 'grand' style. 😋

Happy Anniversary 🎉❤️ and safe travels! So happy to hear that you have already recovered from the shingles. And congrats on becoming a new kitty mom 😽, will you name her Dim Sum-ah? (Can't remember if you're watching Greasy Melo?) My cat is named Bbo-bbo 💋!

Congratulations on your anniversary I'm so happy for you! I hope Mexico is lots of fun, and that you and your husband stay safe and happy. Does your new kitty have a name yet? If kitty is small enough you can name him/her Bogummy and keep small Bogummy in your pocket on a rainy day. Then nobody can call you possessive, it'll just be super cute.

Out of all topics, a friend and I discussed about the effectiveness of PPL in dramas.

Then I discovered that over the years, I have not been much affected by them except for these selected few - the NARS' Schiap Lipstick beautifully worn by Yoon Eun Hye in "Missing You" and then the VALENTINO's sneakers with black strap worn by Kim Nam Gil in "Live Up To Your Name" which I could not afford, so ended up getting a similar design of ASH brand instead.

But I am actually more surprised by the products that really enticed me recently. To think that despite being a tea lover, I really want to indulge on the Maxim's Gold Mocha Latte (thanks to Lee Ji An ) and dying to get my hands on the vacuum cleaner used by Dong Hoon in "My Ajusshi" and yay, I finally found out that it is Samsung's Powerstick Pro. If I am really getting this, that would be my biggest investment on a vacuum cleaner.

Maxim Gold is love, Maxim Gold is life.

I mean, it’s basically just like sweet milk with a splash of coffee, but still.

Is it Maxim Gold is simply just latte?

couldn't drink strong coffee, but I love the smell of fresh coffee, then Maxim Gold turned up to be sweet milk with a splash of coffee is something I could try happily in the rememberance of JiAn, hehe..
Oh now I'm wondering whether there's PPL Director for a show, like a casting director or sound director? or someone like Kim Won Sok PD would be deciding PPL by himself for My Ajusshi, since I heard he is well known for details and careful displays for his production? If that so, @Del, seems that Samsung vacuum cleaner should be just fine :D

I keep wanting to buy jewelry. I love the delicate pieces I keep seeing and I've gotten out of the habit of wearing any for years now. But I keep noticing it in every drama.
There is a site Catbirdnyc that have some pieces I like...and yeah it'd be an investment. But so tempted.

Oh, I checked out Catbirdnyc and yeah, they are pricey. I am not a jewelry person but the mentioning of "cat" somewhat tempted me to check. I thought they have pieces inspired by cats but I didn't see any.

Hi @delailash Del. A couple of observations and two questions.
1. During the run of SUITS Lawyer Choi Kang-seok (Jang Dong-gun) purchased a Tag Heuer watch as a gift for his assistant Lawyer Go Yeon-woo (Park Hyung-sik). To get an idea of the cost I searched on Amazon the TH watch model I think was purchased. Anyway I am still getting these offers from Amazon for $1200 TH watches. I don't think so. Who do they think I am, PHS? (After SUITS PHS is a favorite btw.);
2. I think one of the better PPL recently was the use of CHEVY automobiles in LAWLESS LAWYER; and the questions
3. Has anyone tried the Korean snacks that appear at the head of the DramaBeans home page? Does anyone recognize the model munching on chocolate?

Honey-butter-chips what not to like. I will keep an eye out for them.

Where I live there's a lot of Korean supermarkets so I've actually tried all of them! My favorite is the one with the kid and the hammer (I have no idea what it's called other than the hangeul boo-shyuh? booshyuh). It's basically just dried ramen with flavoring that you literally "hammer" with your fists to break down the noodles and mix the spices in. And @mindy is right, the honey butter chips I can finish in one sitting, they're really good.

Also shout out to my boy Jong-Suk I love him to death and everytime I open Dramabeans to see him with all my favorite snacks I feel so blessed!!

Oh, I forgot to answer the question. Nope, I never noticed all the promos that appear at the head of DB page.

And regarding (1), though not directly related, PHS actually did tempt me to get a pair of Golden Goose sneakers after watching him doing the stripping rope jump in 2D1N. And that was probably the most I invested on a pair of sneakers and now, GG seems to be on every K-celebs' feet.

Yeah. I have tried Royce Chocolate because every time I made a visit to Japan, people would tell me to bring some back home. I'm not a chocolate lover so I have not much opinion about it unless it comes with a perks of getting to smooch Park Hyung Sik.

I've never bought any k-PPL products. Never even been tempted. I haven't even been to a Subway since before I started watching kdramas.

The only PPL-y product I have is Parker ball-point pens, but I bought them before I started watching kdramas. My reaction to their PPL in School 2015 was that I like the all-stainless ones I have more than the half-plastic ones in the show.

Hi Everyone! ...... I hope you are all doing well today!

This week:

Greasy Melo - I have to catch up as I didn't get to any episodes this week. So here I am, wondering what Poong and gangster are up to.

Are You Human Too? - Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I am, but every week I do look forward to seeing the robot and his right-hand man.

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? - Oh what fun it is watching this show! Haven't watched this week's episodes, but going by our fellow Beanies' posts, I see that the charm continues!

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (The Undateables) - Last week I was unsure about continuing this one, but after watching episode 8, I'm curious about it again. Namgoong Min as a roommate .... I have to see what happens with that.

Your House Helper - Ok, so I tried this because I was curious about Ha Suk-jin in this type of role. It wasn't a good sign that the first half wasn't even over and I was literally, dozing off. I didn't watch the second half. I don't know if I'll make another attempt with this one.

Lawless Lawyer - At this point, who knows when I'll get back to this one. No time!

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I actually quite liked the first episode of Your House Helper. I think it's going to be an acquired taste, but it's very feel good slice-of-life with a (so far, vague) ensemble cast. Saying that, I have no idea where it's going, so I guess the second episode will be what shapes my opinion.

Happy Friday, beanies!! :)
It was a hectic and emotional week for me. I had to leave my home and come to new city for my work but leaving home is never a easy task especially for a emotional person like me but thank god due to the my hectic schedule I didn't had time to dwell on it much.
I had no time to watch 1 episode of any k dramas and was able to be active on the site.
I'm lagging behind this week aired episode of Are you human too?, About time, What's wrong with secretary kim? and The undateables
I'm waiting for Mr. Sunshine One thing is sure I'll love all the OST of that drama. ❤️
Now I'm off to watching What's wrong with secretary Kim? Episode 9. (staying away from beanie wall for any unwanted spoilers) :D

Sec Kim 9&10 are just killer 😂😘! Can't wait for the recaps. But you guys, time for me to display my ignorance: are there fanwalls for specific shows, or are you talking about Beanies spazzing about Sec Kim on their own fan walls? How do you have time to follow everyone's walls, is there a secret? I want to spazz in between recaps 🙁
