OT Week 71! Here from beautiful Mexico! I hope everyone had a productive drama-watching week this week! I’ve been spending more quality and quantity time with the husband, but have managed to squeak in thinking about, writing about, and watching kdramas. First, thinking about: I met a girl who would be a great young heroine and a guy that would be the hero. I learned how to paddle-board yesterday and this really naturally beautiful teen-aged girl was out there with me, while my husband was getting his lesson with a ripped, wash-board abs, young 20-something instructor. Her dad owns an “agricultural company.” I didn’t ask the follow up question of “What does his company grow?” because I am in Mexico and was afraid she’d actually tell me and then have to kill me. So rich girl by nefarious means meets poor, very good looking surf instructor on vacation and falls in love. I had the plot lined out before I paddled myself ashore. Then writing about: It was my turn in the Poem fanfic, and Nam-woo and Mi-rae are on the same page (literally as well as figuratively)!

And watching K-dramas and the C-drama/wuxia too! WWWSK, I still have episode 12 to watch, but spoilers abound on the fan wall here, so of course, I’ve spoiled myself. Park Seo-joon, wow. That’s all I have to say about that. Was able to catch Mr. Sunshine and I am just blown away by the cinematography and the music is good too. But what I am the most surprised about is how much I’m engaged with Kim Tae Ri and Kim Min-Jung. These women are just going to rip my soul out of me. They can’t have my heart because Yeo Yoon-seok already has that. And my husband is still OBSESSED with Fuyao. And because he’s had my undivided attention this week, I’ve watched the most recent 10 episodes from start to finish. Fuyao and whatever character Ethan Ryan is playing now is still be best part of the story. We’re to a new kingdom, new antagonists, new identities for our OTP—really, how many princess, emperors, and princesses can there be? I never got all the names of the characters in that last kingdom (Deep Water Nation). And Ethan’s character is still lying about who he is. This is probably the longest I’ve ever seen a male lead lie about himself to the main female lead. I mean, we’re halfway through and I don’t even know who he rally is. And if anyone thinks it takes a long time for Korean drama leads to get some action, just watch a Chinese 66 episode drama. I’m dying over here. Thank heaven for WWWSK.

Conversation about WWWSK:

Me: OMG, why would you tell a child he was kidnapped when he wasn’t?

Husband: Because you’re Korea.

Me: Touche.

Moral of the story: I’m loving vacation life and WWWSK is still my summer indulgence, even if the backstory is going off the rails.

2nd Moral: One guess as to what the hubby is watching right now.

3rd Moral: Have a great weekend everyone!

Other than Secretary Kim I’m in a kdrama slump so I thought I’d check out Cdramas . Since I liked love so beautiful (that was equivalent to a boys over flowers drama-watching wise c drama. I would love a k drama remake of

Love so beautiful -school 2017 leads would do
Boss and me- yoo yeon sook and I cane make up my mind for female lead
And a moonshine and valentine with a whole new ending - any good k drama couple would do for this.

I finally watched Nirvana on Fire.

Some episodes were much better than others, but WOW, I loved it and was completely drawn into the story. I was disappointed that Prince Jing never had any action scenes though. He looked so fierce in his military attire and led many campaigns, yet when Xia Jiang attacked Mei Changsu in episode 49, he just stood there and didn't react quickly like a person who has led/won many battles. I know they were in the Emperor's court and the royal guards and Meng Zhi were there and that's their job, but he's one of the main characters. Even many supporting characters had action scenes. I just felt being able to fight was a big part of his character, but it was never displayed.

I also want to know who everyone's favorite character is!

I like Prince Jing and Mei Changsu's doctor (the older guy). It's so cute that he's always angry at MC for never listening to him. What other bromance can rival this one?!

Nirvana in Fire is one of my top 3 favorite series, ever.

My faves are: Mei Changsu, his bickering doctor, the palace guard and Prince Jing’s mother. Prince Jing and wu lei are good too.

I also liked that the villains were clever, and a good match against Mei.

I’m watching season 2 now, which takes place 2 generations after NIF. It’s a lot slower paced that S1 and the characters aren’t as engaging or charismatic. It’s still a grand production but The original is 100 times better.

Have you seen The Disguiser? Many actors in S1 are in that series, and it’s really good too. From the same production team as NIF.

What are your other top 2 favorite series?

I'm going to watch NIF2 as well. Lol I'm still waiting to emotionally release myself from NIF since it's so mind blowing. I just love everything about the story..a tragic past that can't be spoken, the stoic best friend who doesn't trust any strategists but wants to find out the truth about what happened, the best friend who comes back from the "dead" as a different person seeking justice and supporting the stoic best friend who doesn't know..so good!

I've heard of The Disguiser but haven't watched it. I'll have to put it on my list now lol!

In terms of Chinese ancient series: Bu bu jing xin, and romance of the three kingdoms (up until cao cao dies).

Oldies but goodies: princess pearl season 1, condor heroes 1983, heavenly sword dragon saber with tony leung, Cho Lau Heung with Michael Mia, etc. these are prolly too old for you, lol.

I'm finally watching NiF too, after avoiding it for 2 years. Favorite character Mei Chang Su. Making a lead character out of a brainy guy who's dying of consumption is pretty gutsy. The actor has a nice contemplative quality that makes even his "thinking" scenes compelling. I'm impressed. Is the sequel as good?

Have you finished? Which episode are you on?

Since it's a critically acclaimed drama and I didn't want to miss out, I attempted to watch NIF before but didn't get past a few episodes. I'm so glad I gave it another chance! Yes, MCS is a very interesting and complex character. He's no doubt many people's favorites, including mine, so I wanted to mention other characters that I really liked and made a deep impression on me. Hu Ge was perfectly cast as MCS. He looked scholarly, inscrutable and frail.

I've also tried watching NIF2 before too..and couldn't get past a few episodes. I think It must've been the timing. But I'm going to watch NIF2 as soon as I get over NIF! Will keep you posted in Open Thread.

There is nice bromance in NIF2 as well: Ping Jing and Ping Zhang, King and Ting Sheng.

Hi everyone! I have to keep this short. I really really would like to start learning Korean. I spend way too much time watching dramas and listening to music to have that time wasted not learning. The only trouble is is that my local college no longer offers Korean. I spoken about my interest in starting Talk to me in Korean (TTMIK) before, but I got a bit disheartened when I thought about the pronunciation aspect. I was reminded the other day of a friend who was trying to teach me a German word and I swore I was saying what he was saying, but evidently I was not. So I'm a bit worried that while learning from TTMIK, I might be speaking in blissful ignorance.

So, my point is, are there any beanies who speak Korean who might be interested in giving classes? Maybe we can get a small group together as motivation? Maybe we can use the TTMIK syllabus to work of off? We can also try to figure out compensation. We can use tools like Rabbit, Skype etc that have a mic/voice feature. Let me know.

I took Korean classes at a local Korean church that were partly sponsored by the King Sejong Institute and the Korean government. They were mostly for Korean-American children whose families had lost contact with the language, but they gamely took me in. I'd try calling your local Korean churches or civic groups to see if you can find something. Then you may also meet Koreans, eat Korean food, learn about Korean holidays and have other unexpected benefits.

There's very good method to learn languages called Assimil but so far there's only french- korean version. There's one guy on the website fluent-forever.com/forums/topic/assimil-korean-into-english/ who was hardworking on it and is offering the materials.

I don't know Rosetta Stone's method, but this one is simple and it works. I didn't speak any french 7 years ago and I got that book with CDs and I kind of progressed fast with it. It's a little pocket book with lots of lessons - on left side there's everything written in that language you want to learn, on right side it's everything translated in your own language (or french or english) and there's lots of explication why they're using those expressions, little grammar exercises and after 10 lessons u make revisions and after a certain time they make u do the inverse and you switch...

That guy translated all the exercises to english, so he made it accessible to english spoken folks.

What I've been doing is learning from this website: howtostudykorean.com. It has grammar and vocab, and I try to learn at least 2 lessons a week. As for the pronunciation, I hate listening to the recordings on the website, so I annoy my Korean boyfriend to practice phrases and sentences with me. In the beginning, my pronunciation was trash, but he says I'm been getting better. But if you don't have any Korean friends, I recommend asking around to see if you could make any Korean acquaintances that could help!

Still trying my hardest to work out Hangul and the sounds...and get terribly disheartened when what I say sounds nothing like what native Koreans say according to the Naver Dictionary app. Only to find out that I am sounding out individual words (ala C-A-T English version) whilst native speakers slur and join words together fluidly. But I will persevere till one day I get that AHA moment! In the meantime you can often find me standing in front of Korean signage trying desperately to sound the words out (잠깐만 is my favourite phrase to longsuffering and bewildered hubby by my side)... 😆

Hi Everyone! ...... I hope you are all doing well today!

Have to post and run as it's one of those days filled with endless things to do. If your team is still at the World Cup, have fun watching the final match this weekend!

This week:

Greasy Melo - Is it awful that I want bad things to happen to that hotel president and the hotel restaurant chef, Master Wang?

Are You Human Too? - Watching robot and his right-hand man with the complicated feelings is turning into such a treat! ..... Oh and it got twisty this week!!

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? - Haven't watched this week's episodes yet but judging from our fellow Beanies' posts, things got to a whole new level of interesting with our main couple.

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (The Undateables) - The male lead's cousin is incredibly silly and annoying. What is he, 12? And the swim coach ---- why would she (or anyone, really) want to be with that guy?!

Your House Helper - Ok, so I made another attempt with this one after dozing off while watching the first episode last week. I didn't doze off this week, but it's still a no go with this show.

Mr. Sunshine - Good start, complete with sweeping shots and a story that will weave the political with the personal. Looking forward to learning the backstories on several of the characters.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

Fast forward to the present. I am now acutely aware of the stakes and am pouring over assessment books, reference materials, notes and past years' papers every day. Poor ole' me is sitting for the national exam again. Sort of.

Some changes are okay.. they're more like updates.. Obviously, everyone in China's using SNS/Weibo/Wechat and all that these days and that's alright to incorporate into the show.. because it's just a part of 21st century life. There's a slightly deeper focus on F4's college majors than in other majors.

But they really reduced the bullying (it's SUPER mild.) and decreased the socio-economic gap between Shancai and Daoming Si and the rest of F4. So when Shancai stands up to Daoming Si and calls him out on his arrogance, it doesn't really feel the same as in the other versions..

I don't really feel Shancai's family's money woes as well.
Lots of things.. F4 aren't bullies.. They're all brilliant and super smart.. Daoming Si comes from a wealthy background but he made a lot of money trading stocks or stg..

and also F4 gets scholarships.. but they're all at least upper middle-class. This is one of the most unbelievable aspects. Students from upper middle-class families should NOT be awarded scholarships when there are more deserving students. If they can afford to pay their own way... by earning money, why are they even being considered for scholarships?

1
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

A lot of things just irritate me. I'm kinda obsessive, sorry.

Anyway.. like why is Shancai so reckless and lacking in common sense? Just watch the first 2 eps.. Like, who takes a selfie on the stairs while holding a cake? I mean, you're likely to bump or collide with someone at any point. It's so idiotic. And who walks around with a cake that's not in a box?

@beantown I have to clarify. I was born and raised in Boston, however, I moved away years ago for work and now reside in Gotham City to the south, NYC. Unfortunately I have to decline your appointment. I appreciate the thought. A few things:
1. I mentioned in a previous comment that for me this was shaping up to be the summer of Jung Kyung-ho reruns. I already have on my DF watch list I'm Sorry, I LOVE YOU (2004). After enjoying LAWLESS LAWYER with Lee Joon-gi I found out that both LJG and JKY are in TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF (2007) which is available to stream;
2. I know Go Ah-sung from RADIANT OFFICE which I enjoyed; and
3. I was embarrassed when it finally dawned on me that Park Sung-woon was a lead in my second kdrama HIDDEN IDENTITY. I didn't recognize him. He is terrific in LOM.

I have no idea why Daylight's dramas work for me. Is it the pace?
I have finished both NiFs and When a Snail Falls in Love. Currently I'm watching All Quiet in Peking and Love Me If You Dare. The Disguiser, Battle of Changsa and Candle in The Tomb will be next.

You finished NIF2 in 3 days? We should have a 排行榜 for record time finishers.

Sadly, not all their dramas work for me. LMIYD was fine but it kind of lost steam or I lost interest towards the end. I couldn't get into The Disguiser for some weird reason. I really liked When A Snail Falls in Love and Battle of Changsa though.

I have so many complaints about When A Snail Falls in Love. Jibai is rude and the ending is cheesy...but I like Xuxu. She's smart but also clueless, I laughed when out of the blue she hugged jibai at the crime scene.
So far I haven't dropped Daylight's dramas. I put The Disguiser on hold because I wanted to start with their earliest drama that I could find which is All Quiet in Peking.
I have to Google translate this 排行榜 😄
I started learning Mandarin after I finished the first NiF. I think I'm in the beginning phase of chineseboo, if there's a thing like that 😄

Happy Friday to everyone from HOT Oregon!
Last night I made the mistake of checking out an Indian TV series on Netflix called "Sacred Games". WOW has anyone heard of this or even watched it?
Dark, gritty, violent and all filmed in Mumbai - my weekend is gone - but it's only 8 episodes! I don't know if there is a second season.
It's like Bad Guys Vile City - only about 10x darker if you like that kind of show.
Oh yes, I'm looking forward to Life on Mars and Mr Sunshine as well.
Have a great Friday the 13th everyone!

Lolz. I can still remember watching gu family book. My dad was in the parlour when I was watching it and one hot steamy kiss scene came up. I looked at him with my side eye and fastforwarded it so he won't complain. Immediately he left I rewinded it and watched that scene like four times while blushing like a primary school girl.😊😊😊😊

@ryanglass too late for that

..though graphic and violent isn't my preferred style of TV. I don't mind it if it's there for a purpose, but violence and gore for the sake of violence and gore isn't my thing.

Agreed - I don't do violence and gore, period. This is the main reason I will not watch Game of Thrones. Can't do it. This series does have violence but I think 90% of the times it's part of the story. I did have to look away a few times until Mr.S cleared it safe to watch

3

Noted! Thanks. Yup - I gave up on Game of Thrones after around season 2 for the same reason.

2

After watching pretty much ONLY korean dramas for the past 4 years or so I find graphic sex scenes hard and tend to look around the room or out the window when they are on.
The violence is hard - but I couldn't get through the first show in GOT - that was just too much for me.

3

WTF. I also hate violent movies but I'm watching GOT. I'm even waiting for the season finale. Forget the violence and look at the plot

0

to be honest I was surprised by the amount of nudity and sex as the Bollywood films have always been so chaste.
But this has me hooked! And of course, I'll have to look up the book.

WE JUST FINISHED IT! They put it on Netflix last week and we're already done with the season. It's based on a novel that was published i think in the 2000s? I need to read that novel STAT. I can't wait for the second season. I am used to a very different kind of Indian television (lots of unnecessary drama to say the least) so this was very refreshing.

Actually, Phantom Films produced it - I've only seen Udta Punjab by them. Granted they have only done movies so far but still this wasn't a bad attempt. It was directed by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya and one other director I can't think of off the top of my head. It was just broadcast by Netflix.
Actually, there are many series on Netflix (Kdramas included), that have the "Netflix Original" stamp on them. This doesn't not mean they were produced by Netflix. It only means that Netflix acquired the rights to telecast the show.

Happy Friday 13th everyone. Well, I am trying to catch up of everything except Investigation couple kdrama. So busy with three kids during summer time.

I did watched Life on Mars up to episode 5. It is really good. But, my drama plate is full with four Chinese dramas that I need to catch up and one kdrama too. Also, I am reading two books. I am on Chapter 6 of Sharp Objects and reading another book for a book club that I join recently because the book club of the one I am joining is rarely we get together due everyone is so busy.

By the way, I am curious why DF is slow subbing of Are you Human Too as the recap of it is current and DF have only 10 episodes of Are you Human Too. 🤔🤔🤔🤨🧐 I am gonna wait until all episodes of Are you Human Too to binge watch when they have all episodes of in DF which probably take more than a weeks.I did pay premium price of DF.

Other than that, I hope everyone have a great weekend....

Hi beanies. I am obsessing over Seo Kang Joon and already imagining the expressions he will make in different scenarios in his upcoming drama. Its in September and for the first time in my life I want September to come faster (my half-yearly exams are in September). Lee Seo Won admitted to attacking the victim and threatening her with a knife saying that he was drunk, so two steps forward one step backward I guess? Also Yoo Yeon Seok's character's details were changed due to a pro-Japanese controversy( https://www.soompi.com/2018/07/13/mr-sunshine-changing-certain-details-yoo-yeon-seoks-character-controversy/ ) . Loved Apink's comeback especially Jung Eun Ji's part. From what I have read, she can sing pretty well, so I have an urge to check out Reply 1988. Wanna know if it is really as good as people say. Real life and school work getting in the way of dramas. It's honestly hard being a student. We can't binge watch dramas cause we still live with our parents. Also I feel like noona romances may not be my thing. I have nothing against love but every girl knows that they are more mature than guys their age and when the guy is younger to the girl it just feels to me that she will be babysitting him half the time.

Err... how do they do change characters in a pre-produced drama? Or is Mr. Sunshine still being filmed?

Honestly, if historically he was a handsome bad pro-Japanese guy, they should keep him as a handsome bad pro-Japanese guy. I hope they don't try to be politically correct and end up making a bland or incoherent character. My two cents.

Exactly, and what if the changes they make to him don't fit with the other parts of the plot, even when he is off-screen? There are ripple effects to the plot for doing this, I certainly hope they realize that and are careful.

Seems like a light week around here...maybe a lot of Beanies are on vacation?

Watching:
Secretary Kim - oh how wonderful to have a KDrama that’s an unabashed romance, with no excuses about it, and depicting issues that get resolved as time goes along, instead of waiting till the very end (hopefully the last few episodes won’t venture into hand-wringing, noble idiocy, forced separation and big misunderstandings, but things are looking promising for avoiding those typical KDrama plot twists).

Mr. Sunshine - my husband proclaimed the first two episodes as difficult to understand, plot-wise, as the Twin Peaks revival. Hopefully most Netflix viewers that aren’t familiar with KDramas won’t have the same reaction. Hubby is still watching it with me, though. I wonder if the rumors about the budget are true, because the show just looks so doggone good.

Come Here and Hug Me- glad we’re nearing the end, because the show has pretty much gone fully dark at this point. Definitely not a show for everyone. I applaud the writer and PD for trying something different, though.

The Undatables - I feel rather sorry for the leads that this show isn’t better written and hasn’t gotten better ratings. Took me a while to warm up to the couple but at some point they did start to click with me. Unfortunately the Undatables isn’t unforgettable!

I agree with your husband. Someone coming to KDramas for the first time would find Mr. Sunshine difficult to follow. I've been watching dramas for years and it was difficult to follow because the historical events were too many and went by too fast.

@lizj58 You're right about The Undateables. The writing lacks a lot to be desired. It certainly isn't stellar, which is unfortunate, because the leads are much better than what we're seeing. But what can they do? This is what they were given and I'm sure they're doing their best. The other issue I have with this show is the side characters, particularly Hoon Nam's cousin ---- he's just so silly!

Required fields are marked *

Mr Sunshine - epic from the get go. Each scene just screams $$$...no expense spared. Cinematography is breathtaking and it threatens at times to swallow the plot which is somewhat convoluted...so many players...so many countries...so much to digest. And then there's the 20year (?) age gap between the 2 leads...gasp... Thus far I will keep watching but there's only so much "epic" I can take if the story/plot doesn't grip me which was the case with DOTS. I couldn't finish it. I hope Mr Sunshine does not suffer the same fate. 😕
