Just watched my first drama in 2 weeks and first k-drama in 2 months.
Time.
It was like the writer decided to do a mix of Secret (2013) and Me before you. I'm attracted to that mess and only want to watch when it'll crash and burn.
Finally a k-drama that can be called dark.

PS. Kim Jung-Hyun's acting was very good.
But I feel like Seohyun still need more work, even if she is on the right way for now.

I hope drama does well for Kim Jung-hyun's sake. (You might already heard) He received so much criticism during the press conference not smiling (and seemed to be rude to his co-star/Seohyun). His agency cleared up saying he was too engrossed in his role.

I read the comments in Naver and they all praised him for the acting. Although he'll have to be a smiling machine in his next press conference :D

As for the ratings, I don't think they'll get a lot since they have the judge drama as competition and the rating as bad in all public broadcasts this year.

People don't like ForeverAlone club but i find it being alone far better. Being Lonely might cause some depression but even that you can overcome. I want to do 1000s of things and any relationship might burst those desires-balloon.

American soft culture influence sometime becomes too annoying. You have no bf/gf( like they are some accessory)I find it just a fashion trend. If you have none then people laugh at/pity you.
Being Virgin is like a taboo. Again people mock/laugh/pity you. This peer pressure is surely annoying.

Singledom means "more freedom" for me and saving of resources(time and money).

In addition to peer pressure you are considered to be deviant by psychologists and the mainstream media. Because no sane person could ever enjoy not socializing and dating.

Required fields are marked *

β€œthe deviants” obviously need a re-think. For example, Drama watching/bookworming is socializing, don't you agree? Especially if you end up chatting about it with other beanies.
Drama watching also requires commitment and most of the time enjoyment is the reward.
R.ship commitments however can be draining and taxing. And in the end if it doesn't work out? There goes a little bit of your life down the drain, if it were anything else, it'd just be a few hours max. Need I say more...

It was intended to be an ironic comment, only my English is not eloquent enough to express myself clearly.

It is very distressing for me that I'm confronted with the lives of ordinary people everywhere - in books, in movies and in magazines focusing on realtionships . (Even Sheldon Cooper's built physical intimacy and got married). I feel myself to be socially deviant and "on the outside" despite enjoying my single lifestyle. But I need some reassurance that I'm not alone with these feelings.

Actually, it is not people I want to avoid, but emotional intimacy and self-disclosure.

I'm still in search of that thing I can be single-mindedly passionate about (Drama watching/bookworming are enjoyable, emotional fantasies, but at the same time passive leisure activities, and I need an active hobby to keep me busy and draw my attention away from everyday life.)

Real life sucks.

6

"Real life sucks" LOLπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
You remind me of myself.
On the other hand, without real life and being alive we cannot enjoy our guilty pleasures... drama watching, book worming, classical music, etc.
If it works for you: the very very very real life hasnt come yet (at least according with the bible), so... a little bit of endurance and who knows, maybe we will witness miracles and then most men in the whole planet will be like the best version of our favorite oppas, at least in the inside.
Thanks God in the outside we all look different. To look different is a good thing! πŸ™‚πŸ˜€πŸ˜ƒ

Hee sorry, I don't have the answer for that but for me it's good that we have an ideal type based on our bias. A lot of times it doesn't mean that our standard is too high, but it's because the real human IRL rarely do set an example as ideal type (some men are misogynistic and very patriarchal and they don't realize it because it's the norm), and by seeing our bias (whether it's a manufactured or real personality) if they are good, it teaches us to be more smart and not to just fall for anyone. Let's just say they save us from commiting possible long-term mistakes.

I share your fear Beanies. I would love to fall in love one day and go on a date and stuff, but not at the expense of the busy single life I am leading now. It bothers me that society places so much value on romantic relationships, while there are so many wonderful kinds of love and relationships in this world, Beanie love for example ;)

I am 40 and single, and I prefer it this way. I was in a series of long term, committed relationships pretty much from the age of 15-35, and at a certain point I realized that what I was craving the most in life was independence. I'm not saying a relationship isn't possible, but I want what I want. :) I don't think your kdrama crushes are keeping you from being in a relationship, but your standards may be, and THAT'S OKAY. Keep pushing for what you want and accepting nothing less, because trust me, nothing is worse than waking up next to someone after five or ten years together and realizing that he isn't really ever what you wanted. It's painful, heart-wrenching, and awful for everyone involved.

Thanks for these words @Meghann - they're very comforting. I don't want to compromise either. My one worry is that I don't meet those standards myself, so how am I to expect a partner who does? But I'm trying to improve myself and hopefully eventually , will be there. :)

Very happy to hear your alternate POV. Stay fabulous! ^^

There are few well known guest members who didn't create a/c at DB
@fan @alua etc. so i'm showing some camaraderie with them.
Its not like someone gonna impersonate me(to troll others).

My Biased Opinion - 2nd half of the year produces better kdramas than 1st half.

So many new shows and i was waiting for LIFE TIME RISKY ROMANCE. heh 2 have no subs and Time is quite engaging.
I have tried all new shows and can confidently say only TIME is competitor of LIFE. No romance was interesting enough to deserve any mention.

TIME - is good 8/10 for 1st week.

Hi Everyone! ...... I hope you are all doing well today!

Have been dealing with an intense heat wave the last couple of weeks. It's been awful! Suddenly, moving to the North Pole doesn't seem like a crazy idea.

This week:

Greasy Melo - I'm already saddened that I only have a couple more episodes to watch of the chef-assistant-gangster trio.

Are You Human Too? - Human Nam Shin is causing trouble again! Then again, when isn't he? ..... How will this end??

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? - One more episode to watch. What a fun ride this has been!

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum (The Undateables) - I know I watched two episodes this week, but I barely remember what happened.

Mr. Sunshine - Well, it took six episodes, but things might finally start to get interesting. Not that things were bad before, it just needed a little oomph.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

Does someone else also finds it difficult to watch the last episodes of the show? Not because they are too attached to let it go but because maybe they are sort of tired and don't feel the urge to finish it which in that case remains unfinished for long.
I have not been able to finish CAHM (I understand maybe because it dragged so much) but also WWWSK, even if it was consistently good.

But!! You gotta go watch the last episode of WWWSK, it was....everything.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

@wapz
Yeah, I felt that way about WWWSK. I did watch it, but I kept thinking to myself that it was not so compelling that I had to watch it then. Funny and a nice reversal in gender behaviour, and yet, I could have done without watching it.

Over other shows, though, I may do the opposite... ie what I feel are shows that I started on and which did not engage me... I'll drop until the end. Then I just catch the last episode to see if it resolved anything much or answered any questions. If the ending is not bad, I might go backwards to watch a bit with FFD firmly pressed. But if ending failed to impress (like Something in the Rain/Pretty Noona) I'll never retrace my 'watching' steps.

Same. I will binge-watch 14 episodes of a show and then leave ep 15-16 and wait weeks to finish it.

I compare it to eating too many sweets and getting tired of it.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I dropped many kdramas like that. I think its because of kdramas time and no. of episodes. Only if they could make 45min episodes. Major problem is with kdramas is Side characters are used as fillers to extend the episode and most of the times side characters get their own full fledged storyline. Writer and director at fault.

Hi @ryanglass. If I can join in and before answering directly, with this last cycle of dramas I finally got the monkey off my back of "start a kdrama, finish a kdrama". I got through 55 series in their entirety. Yes, a few were a real plod to get through. From the most recent cycle I dropped PARTNERS FOR JUSTICE (after 4 eps,) and WOK OF LOVE (after 22 eps.).
Now to answer your question: HEALER, HEARTLESS CITY, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

Addendum: My first live-watching Kdrama addiction was daily drama THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK HYANG over on soompi. 108 episodes. Same writer as REBEL. The terrific ensemble cast portrays memorable characters with heart, humor, and derring-do.

Alas, the Sochi Olympics played havoc with preemptions, but even so, the drama ended pretty well despite losing 12 episodes. I highly recommend this low-budget gem that aired at the same time as EMPRESS KI. I watched it on HULU starting a couple of months after it premiered, and eventually caught up with it during the last two months or so. It cemented my love for sageuks.

Seo Hyun-jin is terrific in the title role. She and Jo Hyun-jae are my platonic ideal of a sageuk OTP. Special shout-out to Yeo Ui-joo as seja's steadfast bodyguard, Kang-bok. ;-)

In Ep. 17 @4:34, Seolnan heeds mom's warning and feigns madness by demanding a chicken when she meets two strangers

While I've not entirely thrown off the slump, I've been pleased that I can enjoy the newer shows like House Helper 😍 and Still 17/Thirty But Seventeen. I guess I need lighter fare to unwind with. After this weekend with children (who can be challenging), I will want to collapse with a couple of good shows. πŸ˜”

However, I've got to fetch my own child from the airport before 6am on Monday, so maybe I have to wait until after the weekend to do my collapsing!!! πŸ˜“ 😫 πŸ˜„

I was always left voiceless after babysitting my cousins! Even now when we just hang and the youngest is 16, I find myself with a croaky voice heheh.
I'm really liking House Helper, and liked the first couple of eps of Still 17. Like you, I needed something light. Let's hope the dramas continue down that road!

Yes, I was talking to a bunch of 9-10 year olds in a small room, but somehow, the noise level 😝 and having to talk more just strained the voice box. πŸ˜‰

Our constant hope is that good dramas remain good and can get even better... or at least do not derail and crash towards the end. πŸ˜… πŸ˜ƒ

I once had a class of 20 5-year-old kids, 16 of which were boys. That was the loudest class ever. The poor girls (including me) would sit there and cover their ears and moan, "It's so loud."

Ha ha... I wish I could "collapse" with two light shows (by the way, your house helper is really good), but it is summer and the heat takes me every day to the lake to swimm... It is also very proper. Here the weather is horrible most of the year.
But anyway... wish you success! Enjoy the children. πŸ™‚πŸ˜†

@javinne
How lovely to have a lake to swim in!! What are the 'natural' water temperatures like? How about the temperature in your outdoors? I'm living in constant damp humidity, wet or overriding heat or crazy cold (indoors office aircon). Normal outdoor temperature might range between 20degrees C to 34degrees!!!

Here, it's been for a while in between 27 and 35 Celsius. When I go to swimm, outside is 30 to 33 celcius and the lake (it is actually a portion of a small river) and its temperature may be 8 to 12. I am not sure, it feels like water from the refrigerator! πŸ˜‚
But after the first shiver, I always get to swimm pretty well, and refreshed because as I said, outside is pretty warm. The contrast makes the whole experience even better. Only once I had a similar experience in Wisconsin, but there I think the heat was around 40 degrees Celsius and the river I went in even cooler. It was awesome as well!!

I love watching kidsβ€”not my ownβ€”I have several nieces and nephews now that I just could eat up (not literally, of course)!

LOL @Ally
You remind me of the mum in Addams Family... I think it was in one of the movies. A guest at the Addams' party said the same thing about her own son ... "You're so cute. I could just eat you!"

Mrs Addams shook her head disapprovingly: "Tch tch! Too young!" πŸ˜‚

I maybe the exception, but I am liking the character of Eugene Choi in Mr. Sunshine. I do have a weakness for smart, well-mannered, gentleman in a suit, or uniform (cough* Jung Hwan cough*) rather than disheveled men. Well-dressed, smart and polite are the men who makes me swoon............so, yeah, I am liking the dashing 1900s amrican-korean brooding lead...(please don't scold me too much!)

I'm not watching this, but I'm probably the only beanie who never got the charm of Yoo Ah-In in Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I was firmly on the first lead's ship. So yeah, I definitely get how you feel.

Lol! DB has taught me that I have weird unpopular opinions. It has also taught me that it is ok to post them.

I'm not sure this is an unpopular opinion, though! Even I ended up accepting the main couple!
But yes, the DB community will (almost almost) always respect everyone's opinion...plus there will always be someone who shares your pov!

5

That's the beauty of this community. Just be yourself and be as contrary as you please (opinion wise, I mean!!!). It's great to have and to give a certain freedom with respect.

4

Its not that I don't like them. I loved and drooled over YAI chararachter of Hwi-young in chicago typewriter. I also liked Han shi mok, the dashing prosecutor in Forest of secrets. Its just that disheveled angry looks are not my cup of tea.

Answering your next comment here. Yes, that is exactly how I feel.

Instead of wishing people that life turns out easy or great,... I've taken to wishing them Good Health and that whatever happens, they will grow and be all the stronger for it. Still, have a Great Birthday for the rest of the year!

Hello Beanie! Happy Friday!
Awesome things have happened lately:

1 - I am officially a 200-Hr Registered Yoga Teacher !! Woohoo!! I'm even teaching friends and friends of friends ! yay!
2 - Dream come true: I am planning a "Marvel's Black Panther" themed yoga party on my birthday in October! It's gonna be epic! #bucketList
3 - I watched the last 2 eps of What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and I am in love with love, y'all. It was sweet and refreshing, with no noble idiots and a couple that truly enjoys talking clearly to each other and... I'll miss it.

have I mentioned it's Friday? TGIF!
*and now back to work... lol*

πŸ‘πŸΌ Congratulations on your yoga Teacher Registration! And plans for the party. You have to tell us all about it, it does sound epic.

"In love with love" after Sec Kim 15 & 16, that's just how I feel too. It took me a good while to come back to earth after 16
