Song Hye-gyo, Park Bo-gum’s potential noona romance Boyfriend headed for tvN

There are still no confirmations for the cast or network for the upcoming romance drama Boyfriend, but when you have a potential pairing between A-list actress Song Hye-gyo (Descended From the Sun) and dramaland darling Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds), you’re bound to generate a lot of buzz. Both actors are coming off of huge hits followed by a long hiatus, so this would be a huge casting coup twice over. Even though I have trouble not thinking of Park Bo-gum as Little Song Joong-ki, which either derails or enhances the romance angle, depending on how you like your suspension of disbelief.

The new drama is potentially looking at a Wednesday-Thursday time slot on tvN’s winter schedule, though the network was careful to say that it hasn’t been finalized. The project comes from PD Park Shin-woo of the delightful rom-com Jealousy Incarnate, which was directed with visual and stylistic wit and a flair for comedic timing—a distinct style that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. I’m less excited about the writer, Yoo Young-ah, whose credits include Entertainer and Pretty Man, which both fall into the cute but disappointing category.

The romance drama will be about a love between a woman who appears to have everything and a man who appears to have nothing. Song Hye-gyo is up for the role of an assemblyman’s daughter who was forced to marry a chaebol by her parents, but later ends up divorced after having a child. Park Bo-gum has been offered the part of an ordinary man, and though nothing has been explicitly stated about his character’s age in the drama, I can’t imagine that they’ll ignore the actors’ twelve-year age gap completely.

It’s described as a story about “a fate in which a man and a woman want to live similar lives even if it’s just for one day.” The drama will explore whether it’s harder to throw away wealth and honor or sacrifice an ordinary life, so I get the vague sense that we’ll be getting a more dramatic version of the themes in Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food. I’m not opposed to that in the least; I just hope there’s also a whole lot of cute romance to balance out the angst. You can’t cast Park Bo-gum as a romantic lead and not have cute puppy love, right?

Boyfriend will potentially air Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in December on tvN.

The writer is definitely making me hesitant about this. I’ve only seen Entertainer out of her dramas and did not like it, but she also penned the movie No Breathing, and literally the only good thing about that movie was SIG!

But I love Park Bo-gum and would love to finally have him back in dramaland.

Him and Song Hye-gyo is not a pairing I would envision, but I am very open-minded when it comes to drama pairings. There are many that seem unusual on the surface and turn out great, and others that seem like a match made in heaven but fall flat for me.

We’ve talked about this so much before, hehe.

Oh God, No Breathing??

I couldn't believe they made a whole movie based on the notion that being able to hold your breath in competitive swimming is a good thing. That was so dumb! All I remember about that film was their representation of the Australian team, which was hilarious.

I'm having issues with it as well. They are both strong actors, but as a couple...I need to know they will have some type of chemistry. Also, is this going to be like Pretty Noona who gives me food? I hear you. I think they would make a great pair of siblings. Or she could be the kick-ass aunt that encourages her somewhat shy nephew to go after what he wants in life, while solving crimes and putting bad guys away. Or they could team up to fight for justice and he could be the hacker genius speaking in her ear while she's single-handedly taking down a drug cartel in the dark streets of Seoul. Or she could be a genius composer trying to put her latest opera together and he's the popular idol who never sang opera that she HAS to put in her show or it won't get made.

As a couple though... I don't know. I'll still watch but they're gonna have to put in some work to convince me they are romantically entangled.

This is the part that I'm most excited about for this drama. It's a rare thing for me to see a single parent in a drama. Add in a younger man, and this could be all kinds of awesome. I do love both potential leads as well. Ok, I need to lower my expectations and excitement.

Okay, so apparently it's gonna be on tvN. The writer has written mostly film scripts, at least a few of which got good reviews (e.g. Miracle in Cell No.7, As One), but her drama credits are only Entertainer and Pretty Man. I don't care so much about the age gap. Technically Park Bo Gum can act anything but when it comes to romance, I can only picture him with younger or same age female co-stars.

Somehow I am reminded of Hong Jong Hyun and Song Yoon Ah's pairing in Mama. He was 24 and she 41. It wasn't exactly a noona romance because it was totally one-sided. I wouldn't say the chemistry was good either but if the romance had developed, I think I would have bought it.

And if Song Joong Ki is able to watch the drama or not?
What if Song Hye Kyo with no pressure of "being couple" on news, acts out the superb chemistry and charming?
What if they get nominated for "best couple", how would Joong Ki react?
I know I just went ahead but I hoped this casting is confirmed soon to see how meta this drama universe could get! :)))))

I'm with you. I don't hate the writer's work as they were both premises with promise that didn't break any ground, but might had untapped potential. Perhaps with this director there might be magic.

Required fields are marked *

LOL do you remember my comments? ^^ I'm impressed. Thanks!

But to clarify - what I criticised was them pairing an 18 year old actress with a 28 year old actor. It has nothing to do with
1. the age gap
2. the younger partner being female.

The key here is I'm unconfortable with someone so young being paired with someone much older - 'course the age thing is subjective, if she's an adult, it shouldn't matter. Since I'm Yoon Do Joon's age myself, it feels weird to think of pairing someone my age with someone only 18.

@greenfields
My next essay (not really) will be on the level of vitriol that gets levelled when you even suggest a problem with young woman/older man pairings. Nothing gets more abuse. I wonder why.

But I have to tip my hat to this comment, which I may frame (virtually)

In that case, I present to you, accomplishment #1: VD who also hides behind his/her keyboard remembers my comments from earlier.

2

@leetennant - hehehe thank you. ^^ (I suspect I'm too easily amused by comments like VD's anyway.)

As for the vitriol, beats me. *shrugs* When the comment degenates into personal attacks, you know they have nothing to say on the actual topic of discussion itself. They've entered "troll" territory now and are, no offence to VD, the easiest kinds of people deal with.

4

I rarely comment on it but I have a real problem with fans not being able to separate an actor's work life from their professional life. It's a job.
I wasn't impressed with what I've seen of this writer's work but if Park Bo Gum is in a noona romance then I am in.

I guess what makes this touch others is that it will be considered Mrs Song's comeback drama after marriage etc.

PBG also went on a hiatus after Moonlight due to his studies.

Considering the closeness of Mrs Song's husband to PBG it gets somewhat awkward.

Unless, this will be a sort of sister/brother relationship then it would be great. Most likely, it is not.

It has suddenly occurred to me that if the woman in a relationship is older even by just a few years it becomes a "noona romance" but there's (generally) no such label for romances where the guy is MUCH older than the girl, which is fairly more common. Hmf.

If the actresses are from the kim trio, the complaints go through the roof. I remember the hullabaloo when KSH and TY were paired together. It was as if she was in some helpless situation where she was forced to act with him.

I, too, hate age gaps, but for the Kim trio, personally, I'm fine with the 1993'ers (Yoo Seung Ho, Park Bo Gum, Ji Soo), but people even complained about Kim So Hyun being paired up with 1994'er Nam Joo Hyuk. Obviously, I hope they stick with 1997'ers (and no, Yeo Jin Gu is not the only 1997'er) or 1996'ers like Kim Min Jae.

I forgot to list Yoon Doo Joon x Kim So Hyun, which sparked another hullabaloo. The complaints will start up again during Clean with Passion for Now. I'm upset Ahn Hyo Seop dropped out. His (bad) acting notwithstanding, at least he is similar in age with Kim Yoo Jung.

Required fields are marked *

The Kim trio are too big to star opp unknown 97,96 liners so they need actors who are well known to a degree. None of their same age counterparts are well known so the only option is to cast them opp people who are 94 line or above. KSH is especially more comfortable acting with older actors than younger ones because they are on the same wavelength as her mentally. I've noticed she feels out of place with a younger cast like she did with RMOTM. She was happiest when filming BIOG and RR.

I really liked Entertainer ! The different stories of the characters were moving. The big issue in this drama was the main couple : 1) Hyeri was miscasted as a partner for Ji Sung, her character would have been better with the young singer 2) For the story their couple was useless, Ji Sung's character didn't need a love story, his repetence for his friend was enough.

So I think the issue here is the pairing too. I can't imagine the both of them together. I think Song Hye Gyo needs a veteran to support her acting and Park Bo Gum is too green for that yet.

Reading what it was about - wealthy woman with a kid, who might have to give all of that up for a younger man - gives me more Secret Affair vibes than Pretty Noona vibes. And the stakes are higher because she would give up her kid's financial future too, not just her own.

That all sounded interesting, but then it's the Jealousy Incarnate PD? That would make it ... Secret Affair with jokes and funny sound effects?

This is just so weird. Like it's not really about the age gap... even though in this case I'm like "huh". They really would be like brother and sister.

Also while PBG still needs to improve his acting skills he is already above SHK who pretty much would bring the popularity to this drama rather than any outstanding acting skills. And before her fans jump up yelling "she won a daesang!"... well yeah for DotS. With ratings like the drama received any actress or actor would've gotten a daesang.

Anyways... my main problem here is: the writer. Like who would step down and join a drama which is written by a writer with terrible credentials?

I hope they decline it and wait for better projects.

This isn't all directed at you @serendipity2018 I just hit reply and started saying stuff.

Now, see, I've never been in love/married. But it seems to me like its disrespectful to the couple. Like their marriage/relationship is so weak that it can't withstand a professional actor pairing up for a romantic role with another professional actor. The way everyone is talking, "I wonder if they chose PBG because he's the only one that the couple (or whoever) feels safe/comfortable with" I'm not sure if I know who she is but did she not do romantic roles before she got married? I remember it was a huge shock (not for me, obviously, I don't know them) when the Song-Song couple announced they were a couple and getting married. So---from the time she met him until the time they got married did she not do a single other romantic role because she's in a relationship? Can Ji-Sung's wife not act with other men because she's married? Like--how long do these actresses have to wait before they can continue moving forward with their careers?

I've got to say all of this wondering if PBG is the only person they feel safe having work with her really makes it sound like her husband is a monster. Like--is he going to stop being friends with PBG if PBG works with his wife? Is he going to beat his wife up if she dares to do a romcom with someone else?

I honestly don't understand this reaction, y'all. And---do actors really have this much say over what other actors are hired to do a roll? Wouldnt' the behind the scenes people (and do keep in mind everything I know about casting I learned from the awful (second half) of Temperature of Love) have the most to say. From TOL I remember the companies came up with a list of actors for the writer to choose from and the writer made their selections and sent it back to the company and from there the company sent it to the actors teams to make their decision.

And if from there PBG and Besties decided that they were fine with the pairing---why should we be the ones to make a big stink about it?

I was thinking the exact same thing, isa!

Actors are actors. I am sure many of them are in relationships that we don’t know about but that does not stop them from taking on romantic roles in dramas. And is marriage any different? Ji Sung is about to star in a drama where he plays a married man—and it’s not like Lee Bo-young is his leading lady. They dated and have been married for yeaaaaars, but they both have had plenty of roles in romantic dramas.

If any actor was ACTUALLY mad at their significant other for romancing someone else on-screen, it would be incredibly hypocritical!

I love you, Bogummy, but nope. Go join your "hyungs"´ bleak, dark drama....

Right! The story must be good but if they are thinking of having a happy ever after, ie, love is lovelier the second time around type of story with a younger man, then Park BoGum is the wrong actor to team her with.

Makes me wonder If PBG was chosen because he is a "safe" bet for a newly married Mrs Song and they won't trust her with anyone else but the husband's good friend.

It's sad even thinking about it.

PBG is a brilliant actor and Moonlight Drawn by Clouds has proven that he has the makings of becoming a good actor. Please let him get roles than will allow him to shine and it's from my point of view it's not this one, absolutely!

Well. I'm here for it, whatever anyone says.

I love PBG and I've missed him dearly, and I have no problem with him having a noona-romance (especially on TVN, who have delivered some of my favourite romance dramas).
SHK isn't my favourite actress, but I don't mind her either, so I don't have any issues with the casting. The age gap also doesn't bother me at all, tbh.

I've been waiting for PGB's comeback, but this is a hard pass for me. It has a few elements that are just not my thing.
