A marriage that ended a drought in tvN’s 100 Days My Prince

This looks so adorably silly. A new character teaser is out for tvN’s upcoming 100 Days My Prince, starring Nam Ji-hyun (Suspicious Partner) and D.O. (With the Gods), and it looks like there’s a heavy emphasis on the comedy in this historical rom-com, which I love. I knew Nam Ji-hyun could do spunky heroine, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her quite as rascally as she appears to be in this teaser.

The premise of 100 Days My Prince is pretty wacky from the start: Joseon is in the grips of a fierce drought, and because of the widespread belief that natural disasters are caused by the marital unfulfillment of “old” bachelors and bachelorettes, Crown Prince Lee Yul (D.O.) orders that they all be married by the next month. Our heroine Hong-shim (Nam Ji-hyun) falls within that description at the ripe old age of 28 (ah, ye olden days), though she is just as put off with the old maid label as I am, giving an official the stink-eye in the teaser when he remarks that she’s the oldest unmarried woman in the land.

She may curse the crown prince all she likes, but that doesn’t stop her from getting dragged to the local police bureau, where she gets punished for not complying with her marriage orders. As if being forced to marry weren’t bad enough. She finds herself a potential husband who just happens to be an amnesiac Prince Yul (though she doesn’t know that, I think). Though he embodied the perfect would-be monarch, after his accident relating to an assassination attempt, his amnesia has turned Yul into the useless village idiot.

To Hong-shim, he’s just the mysterious Won-deuk who appeared in her village one day. It looks like they had a chance encounter one night at a water mill and Hong-shim plays it up in front of her fellow villagers in order to escape further punishment, much to Won-deuk/Yul’s confusion and alarm. Next thing he knows, Won-deuk and Hong-shim are taking part in a marriage ceremony, though Hong-shim tells someone offscreen that she’s “never thought of this marriage as real.” She throws in a good sneer at the term “dear husband” as the teaser ends.

I always love it when we get a sageuk that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this teaser reminded me of the sageuk parody Legend of Hyang-dan, which is a good thing in my book. I do have some reservations about this writer Noh Ji-seol, whose credits include She’s So Lovable, Scent of a Woman, and Dr. Champ, but let’s hope that 100 Days My Prince is more similar in quality to the latter two than Lovable.

100 Days My Prince will take over tvN’s Monday-Tuesday slot from Let’s Eat 3 starting September 10.

I think I'm gonna love this. Is it contractual or arranged marriage? Whatever it is they don't start it from love, right? it also has amnesia and cohabitation. Is it real, is it happening in 2018? Please September, come faster.

It sounds like Marriage By Edict. And then Seja is hoist by his own petard. Serves him right. Sauce for the gander as well as the (cooked) goose. ;-)

I've seen two of the writer's shows. I didn't hate Dr. Champ. She's So Lovable, on the other hand...

But wait! The last time there was a water shortage in Joseon, wasn't it Ruler: Master of the Mask? [runs away screaming]

Why didn't you put the other teasers? Comedy is only half of it.

At this point, do we even trust Kdrama/film trailers?

No, LOL....But some people might think it's all comedy and be excited. While other might not prefer all comedy in a sageuk.

This drama's premise sounds like Shopping King Louis except in sageuk and with the marriage. Looking forward to see these two puppies on screen! ❤

Every writer deserves at least one stinker. So this should be good (to make up for "His dog was so loveable.")
I'll give it a try.

Sageuks aren't normally my thing, but a romantic comedy I can be on board with! Especially with D.O. and NJH. :)

(Mr. Sunshine has been the exception to my 'no sageuk' rule because it's amazing.)

Thanks for the plot information on 100 DAYS MY PRINCE, tipsymocha! It sounds promising. LEGEND OF HYANG-DAN is one of my all-time faves as an inspired send-up of "The Tale of Chunhyang."

So far, I think I've only seen Nam Ji-hyun in ANGEL EYES. I have yet to see D.O. in a dramatic production. I see veterans in the cast who do comedy well, so anticipate some fun.

I definitely had this one down on my list! I need to end my sageuk drought.

Acting potential: SOLID. Nam Ji Hyun has loads of sageuk experience as a child actress - her role as Deok-Man in Queen Seon Duk is one of my favourites. D.O. is much greener, but I like the little of I've seen of him so far. He is probably the most talented in acting among EXO idols. I can't comment on the writer and PD.

I'm surprised at the comedy tag because both actors are capable of a more serious drama. In fact, Teaser 2 is more of what I expected: epicness and "amnesiac prince out of water" hijinks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R269TuiAiw (The music reminds me of Narnia OST LOL)

Thanks for the link, @wishfultoki. Teaser #2 definitely had more of the comic vibe that I was expecting. And the music has a fairy-tale quality to it. I can't wait to see everything go sideways when the village idiot finds his marbles and remembers he's really Seja...

Thanks for the info on the OTP's acting experience. I had noticed that Nam Ji-hyun has acted in numerous sageuks, I just haven't seen them. I'm encouraged by your take on D.O.'s past work. ;-)

The story is basically somewhat similar to her other drama Shopping King Louis.
I love Nam Ji Hyun's and D.O's acting. They are super talented and really cute.
Amnesiac + cohabitation + kind of arrange contract marriage trope = PERFECT.
I just need a happy ending.^^

I will watch just for Nam Ji-hyun ! She's so good as an actress. I know that D.O. is not a bad actor, but he looks more like a puppy than a prince. A actor who looks older could have been better for me. A reunion with Seo Kang Joon would have been so great :D

Can't wait for this! Nam Ji Hyun's got that pitch-perfect rom-com sensibility. And I've liked D.O. in other stuff. I also like the ordinary-gal-falls-in-love-with-amnesiac story.

Given the hot weather and the heatwave in south korea, I had been thinking about this production and how much it must have sucked to be filming this. Kudos to all the actors and staff!

I am really anticipating this drama since I have missed Nam Ji Hyun a lot. I can’t wait for it to finally start airing. I might not be a huge fan of saeguks but I am still anticipating anyway.
