Jang Dong-yoon joins tvN’s Mr. Sunshine as late addition

Oh, I think I like this a lot. Starting this weekend, Jang Dong-yoon (You Who Forgot Poetry) will be joining tvN’s Mr. Sunshine for the last third of the series. Adding a relatively big name to the cast this late in the game is pretty rare in dramaland, but I’m excited for the possibilities of this new addition.

Details of Jang Dong-yoon’s role in the show haven’t been revealed, but I’m hoping his character has something to do with the Righteous Army, which is a portion of the plot that desperately needs some development. Personally, I think the show could use a little shake-up in terms of character and narrative dynamics, and the addition of another (hopefully) key player in the story is definitely a step in that direction.

I’ve been a fan of Jang Dong-yoon since Solomon’s Perjury, which he followed up with memorable performances in School 2017 and You Who Forgot Poetry, so I’m really happy to hear that he’s joining such a high-profile project like Mr. Sunshine. The show is already one of the highest rated shows on the cable channel (Episode 14 clocked in at a whopping 15.6% nationwide), and is well on its way to becoming the highest rated show on tvN, so a key role on Mr. Sunshine would definitely help solidify Jang Dong-yoon as lead potential.

For those of you curious to see what Jang Dong-yoon’s role in Mr. Sunshine will be (like me), you won’t have to wait long: His character will make his first appearance in tomorrow’s Episode 16.

Say, what? Call me curious. Is this something they just did, or just announced to us? I'm used to kdramas introducing a new character late, but usually we know about it before this. Is this show pre produced or did they make changes according to fans' wishes (who don't seem to like the Eugene/Ae shin? Who could he be related to? Guess I'll find out soon enough.

I always hit "send" too soon...
"...the show could use a little shake-up in terms of character and narrative dynamics, and the addition of another (hopefully) key player in the story is definitely a step in that direction." Actually, I've though they have too many characters already and that's why some of the character development has been too sparse, too many characters to service. And I thought episode 15 finally was getting deeper into character, plot, righteous army and historical events.

Dammit, now I have to watch this show again. I luff Jang Dong Yoon. He was the reason I finished School 2017. (I wasn't into the OTP). We shall not speak of You Who Forgot Poetry.

I'm ecstatic for him since Mr. Sunshine's ratings are through the roof. I hope this late casting is a sign he will star in more Kim Eun Sook dramas since she loves casting the same actors in all her dramas (Kim Woo Bin: A Gentleman's Dignity and Heirs, Kim Ji Won: Heirs and Descendants of the Sun, Yoo In Na: Secret Garden and Goblin, Kim Ha Neul: On Air and A Gentleman's Dignity).

Hi @panshel. This is good news and I am pleased for Jang Dong-yoon.
LOL about:

We shall not speak of You Who Forgot Poetry.

Since I was on the MinHoYoung Line I will make a couple of comments about JDY's performance in A POEM A DAY below.

That's really interesting. How many episodes is this drama supposed to be? (Couldn't find a definitive answer on Google.)

Episode 15 was only slow the first half. I really enjoyed the second half and episode 16.

I'm confused because I thought Mr. Sunshine was totally pre-produced?

I watched him in Solomon Perjury and I loved this drama. All the young actors were great. He's a great actor not so young actually. In School 2017, I was disapointed that he was not the main lead because I'm not a fan of Kim Jung Hyun ( I didn't really like his character either). In A Poem A Day, the writter wrote his charactery very poorly.

So I hope KES wrote to him a great character ! Because he deserves it !

How long does filming take for Mr. Sunshine? I heard it's already begun a year ago and it's still filming now?

This is good news. I am not watching MR. SUNSHINE but I am pleased for Jang Dong-yoon that he will be working on this very popular drama.
Prior to his appearance in A POEM A DAY as Min-ho I only knew JDY from his work in SOLOMON'S PERJURY where he played the sweet Ji-hoon.
APAD did poorly with the SK viewing public according to ratings but we beanies who were watching had a ball during its run. I am repeating some of the comments I made about JDY's work in APAD:
1. He gave a fine performance as Min-ho as the character was written which was not generally appealing;
2. I thought Min-ho's poem recitations and film sequences were the best in the drama; and
3. Some thought Min-ho's character was treated poorly by the writers-nim and I was one of them. JDY kept going on and my main concern for him was to avoid typecasting. I hope that will not be the case in MS. Best of luck to JDY.

I'm watching ep 16 and he's finally introduced in the second half. It looks like he actually will add another complication to the storyline. It should add to the multitude of factions and complicated machinations of Japan's takeover of Joseon. It's getting very interesting.

Well, if they had asked me, "what would make Mr. Sunshine a better show?" I for sure wouldn't have said, "why don't we add another character!" I have nothing against Jang Dong-yoon. It's just (and I really like this Drama) I am already having a difficult time keeping everyone straight AND there are characters I have a bond with that aren't getting enough air time already. (cough cough-- Hee-sung, Hina, Domi's sister, Kyle--maybe not a popular opinion, but I like Kyle--and I'd even like more Dong Mae.)

But when I think about it--we've killed off so many players maybe it is time to refresh (add to) the cast.

I was skeptical too because there are so many characters to service it's hard to give them any depth. However, when I saw him and his cohorts at the end it all made sense, and will add not just a new dimension but probably one that was really a factor in history.
