Revenge drama Room No. 9 lines up star cast

Kim Young-kwang, Kim Hee-sun, Kim Hae-sook

Ooh, this sounds interesting! The upcoming revenge drama Room No. 9 from tvN has cast its main leads and supporting actors. Everything centers around veteran actress Kim Hae-sook’s (About Time) character, a unique villainess who is in line for death row. She meets Kim Hee-sun (Woman of Dignity), a Machiavellian but beautiful lawyer, when fate plays a dirty trick and switches the two. And the key of this fate seems to lie with one man, played Kim Young-kwang (Lookout).

Prisoner Kim Hae-sook is the infamous killer behind the “Poison Serial Murder” case that gripped the nation. Having waited 33 years for her execution date to be set, she has all but given up on life. But a godsend comes her way and she’s given a chance at a new life as a beautiful, intelligent lawyer. Nicknamed “Icon of Rudeness,” lawyer Kim Hee-sun is the type of person who shamelessly flatters the powerful, while completely ignoring the weak. Not exactly a role model to follow, but it has worked for her so far — her winning case rate is a whopping 100 percent. But will that mindset and personality be able to survive prison?

The Kim Hee-sun/Kim Hae-sook combination is a powerful female duo for sure, but I’m also really digging this supporting cast lineup. Kim Hee-sun’s lover, played by Kim Young-kwang, is an outwardly sweet family psychiatrist and a charmer, but his warm exterior hides an inner dark side. But the real villain in all this seems to be the character played by Lee Kyung-young (Misty), a sociopathic CEO hiding a secret from his past. He used Kim Hae-sook to create a new life for himself, and threw her away without an ounce of remorse once he was done with her.

Lee Kyung-young, Oh Dae-hwan, Jung Je-won

On the law enforcement side, Oh Dae-hwan (Life on Mars) plays an investigator who was demoted after a previous encounter with Kim Hee-sun, and he has been looking forward to a chance at revenge ever since. But when he meets her again, he’s surprised by her suddenly changed warm demeanor. Then, there’s Jung Je-won (of Hwayugi, also known as singer ONE), playing a genius of geniuses, at the top of the 0.01% world’s most intelligent. However, he can’t control his own emotions and lives a lawless lifestyle. His behavior is furthered by the fact that he is spoiled rotten as the only son and heir of his father, Lee Kyung-young.

PD Ji Young-soo of melo Falling for Innocence and corruption drama Big Man will be directing, while writer Jung Sung-hee of sageuks Master of Trade—Inn 2015 and Ja Myung Go takes the script. To be honest, this is a little conflicting because the casting seems phenomenal and I’m excited to see the dynamic interplay between veteran actors Kim Hae-sook and Lee Kyung-young, but I wasn’t a fan of Big Man or Master of Trade—Inn 2015. I’m hoping PD Ji will find a fresh and compelling angle to “life reset revenge drama” Room No. 9, so my fingers are crossed!

Saturday-Sunday drama Room No. 9 will begin airing in September, after the conclusion of Mr. Sunshine.

Kim Hae Sook AND Kim Hee Sun? Not sure I need to know anything else about this drama to state that I'm Watching! ^^;

BUT since more has been offered, I can't help but notice, "playing a genius of geniuses, at the top of the 0.01% world’s most intelligent". *cue eye roll* Dramaland has so many geeeeniuses running about that I'm convinced every tenth person must be a genius.

In any case top of the 0.01 % of world's geniuses makes no sense, writer of the drama-nim. It's the same position whether he's at the top of 100% of the world's geniuses or 20% or 1%. It's the top. Glad to know our character is essentially a flawed God who meets some objective standard of geeenius hitherto unknown to mankind.

Kdrama sure loves to throw the word "genius" around easily. I've yet to watch a truly genius character in kdrama despite the claim..

@stuartnz Shin 3, from Are You Human Too. His mom was a genius scientist who created him, an AI who looked and acted exactly like a human. It just finished airing

I'm glad there's at least one genious female in kdramaland. So is ahjumma from Healer.

But re Shin III's mum, she may have been a genius but was she ever described as such in the character description? Did she even GET a character description, let alone one that went "geeeeeeeenius".

1

Add in the bonus of Kim Young-kwang and I'm there.

The genius thing is getting old. Why do drama writers feel the need to label characters in such a way?

Anyway, this one sounds interesting, and hopefully the talented cast will elevate the abilities of the PD, and we will get that magical melding of good writing, good directing, and great acting.

So that means they are going to be reaching out to Jung Kyung Ho for some part in this show, right, right, RIGHT ???!!!!

Yesss, Kim Hae-sook, my queen, is returning and in a drama centered on her? And up against Lee Kyung-young? I love it. The story sounds fascinating, though I'm not quite sure about the PD-writer team. Hopefully the refreshing premise, the awesome cast, and tvN will bring out the best from them.

I didn't really understand. Is it a crime / thriller drama?? Is it a dark comedy drama? Is this a melodrama???😒😒😒 highly doubt it... But, anyways. What is it?? Science fiction? Body swapping??
Didn't get it.
But the cast seems to be awesome. I wonder... If it would be worth it...

Thanks for the casting news on ROOM NO. 9, tineybeanie! A revenge drama with a death-row switcheroo, if I understand correctly. For some reason it makes me think a body-swap is involved, but maybe I've just got sci-fi or the supernatural on the brain. I'm sure the big, bad sociopath has beaucoup ways to frame his prey.

I've been waiting to see what kind of role Kim Young-kwang would pick after his turn as Prosecutor Jang Do-han in LOOKOUT. This ought to be interesting. I'm looking forward to Kim Hae-sook's portrayal of a serial poisoner. She is one of my favorite Kdrama moms. I think I've only seen Kim Hee-sun as plucky time-traveling plastic surgeon Yoo Eun-soo in FAITH. It will be fun to see her as a lawyer. I'm tickled that Oh Dae-hwan (detective Yong-ki in LIFE ON MARS) will be back for another spin as an officer of the law.

It would be interesting if the poisoner turns out to be the decent person in the mix. If she's been in jail for 33 years, she's had plenty of opportunity to change and grow. Also, we don't know who she poisoned or her reasons for doing so.

O___O I thought this would be a female version of Come Here and Hug Me (with the serial killer ajumma on death row and a lawless lawyer who will get her out somehow.) But does the switch mean a fantasy plot twist where their bodies are swapped? Because why would Oh Dae-hwan be surprised at Kim Hee-sun's changed demeanor?

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was picking up on a body-swap, too -- because the former member of Insung Violent Crimes Unit #3 noticed a personality change in the lawyer. Now I'm wondering if the lawyer on death row will get out of jail during an eclipse, but can only go to Goryeo. I wonder if paper talismans or incense sticks will be involved. ;-)

5

It almost HAS to be body swap. Or magic illusion. It's not like the two actress look so much alike that someone could just mistake them.

Then "paper talismans or incense sticks" would fit right in :)

Aww I was hoping for a non-fantasy scenario. Like a thriller where Kim Hae-sook manages to pin her crimes on the ruthless lawyer. I think it’d be awesome to have the ladies lead such a show for a change. Having a fantasy twist makes it 0.01% less cool, but still something to anticipate.

Maybe it will be the "magic" of plastic surgery that prevails. Or perhaps a personality transplant. LOL.

It will be wild to see Kim Hae-sook playing a ruthless poisoner and Kim Hee-sun as a lawyer unfettered by a conscience. Both may end up being pawns of the shadowy Big Bad sociopath.

2

Eureka! A clone of Nam Shin-III gets a sex change along with a personality transplant. Problem solved. ;-)

2

Required fields are marked *

It has to be body swap. I'm excited to see them trying to act as each other and still failing.
I guess Lunar eclipse before her execution will lead to body swap. Intense sticks and talisman's will be prohibited in jails until unless a police sub ordinate will give it to Kim Hae Sook out of her fear.🤣🤣

Required fields are marked *

I like your idea of a female version of COME HERE AND HUG ME mashed up with LAWLESS ATTORNEY. ;-)

It wouldn't surprise me if the poisoner and lawyer are both framed by the sociopath pulling all the strings while lurking in the shadows, but for now all I can say is, "Insufficient data." LOL.

As for the lawyer's change in demeanor, who needs a body-swap and the supernatural when there are simpler explanations? For instance:

1. Identical twin (with bonus Birth Secret)
2. Doppelgänger (natural or Gangnam style)
3. Amnesia
4. Brain tumor / neurological condition
5. Change of heart
6. Lightning strike (or other Near-Death Experience)
7. Coma
8. Dream/Nightmare

@korfan,

I realized I've seen Lee Kyung-young in a bunch of sageuk movies (he's got a filmography as long as my arm), but the roles that clearly stand out in my mind are in SUNNY (2011, as Na-mi's teenage crush, now as an adult who has a son who's a chip off the old block) and THE BEAUTY INSIDE (Woo-jin's father in the present). He was named best supporting actor in MISAENG, but I must not have been paying enough attention when I marathoned it. Anyway, he definitely got my attention in those two excellent flicks. I agree that it will be really interesting to see him as a villain facing off against the mesdames Kim.

This is great casting news on LOOKOUT alumnus Kim Young-kwang. I was thrilled to see a brief mention on AsianWiki that his drama brother Shin Dong-wook will be headlining in DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING, which premieres on 4 October on MBC. It almost sounds like it could be LET'S EAT 4 (but with siblings who are foodies).

I don't recall whether you live-watched LAWLESS ATTORNEY. It featured a dandy villainess. Lee Hye-young was memorable as corrupt Judge Cha Moon-sook. I just now realized that she played Dong-Joo's mom in CAN YOU HEAR MY HEART. I did not even recognize her.

She is a stage actress, having started in musicals and played in everything from Euripides to several Shakespeare tragedies (no comedies) and Ibsen. No wonder she has such a commanding presence -- and great diction. ;-)
