Yeo Jin-gu up to star in drama version of Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King

Come on, let’s be real. You had me at Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds, Circle) playing a king. There’s a drama adaptation in the works at tvN for the hit movie Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King, also known internationally as Masquerade, and an offer is out to Yeo Jin-gu to headline in the dual role as King Gwanghae and the clown who will take his place on the throne.

The 2012 film by Choo Chang-min was a massive box office and critical success, and is still the ninth-highest grossing domestic film in Korea with over 12.3 million tickets sold. Lee Byung-heon starred in the eerie historical melodrama as a paranoid Gwanghae who knew that his opponents were trying to poison him, and tasks his trusted advisor to find a double who will act as his stand-in and protect him from assassination. They find a clown who is the spitting image of the king, and when an assassination attempt nearly takes the king’s life, the clown must assume the throne while the king recovers. The problem is that he might be a better king than the real king, and a man that the queen could actually love.

Obviously the drama adaptation plans to age down Gwanghae and the clown if Yeo Jin-gu is up to play the lead. He’s already played this specific king in the film Warriors of the Dawn, but that version of Gwanghae was idealistic and heroic, while this one will be shrewd and twisted. The clown is really the heart of this story, as the commoner with a natural warmth who breathes life into the previously cold and frightening palace. His character is described as a survivor who was abandoned as a child and became a traveling clown, and he’ll come to enjoy his time masquerading as a king.

The drama will feature a love triangle between the king, the clown, and the queen, and is about a love that transcends class and the law. I’m sure it’ll draw comparisons to Ruler–Master of the Mask, but hopefully the associations end at the prince and pauper premise, because that drama was disappointing in so many ways. This one has a successful film as its backbone, so it already has a leg up. Directing will be PD Kim Hee-won of Warm and Cozy, Dazzling Temptation, and Money Flower.

Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King is being planned for a January 2019 broadcast on tvN.

Money flower was amazingly directed and with the premise of this drama it could be an intense watch. I’m seeing similarities between ruler master of the mask but hopefully this will turn out to be better.fingers crossed.

Ruler Master of the Mask was such a disappointment with the always clueless heroine. Everyone knew everything only she was in the dark about the happenings. Most of the characters were just stringing her along. What could make the writer think that her character would sound captivating?

It wasn't just the heroine who was clueless. The whole drama was messed up in the writing department. The crown prince constantly needed saving and there was no logic in what any ever did. Even the villain was harmless till the last 5-6 episodes which is when the drama actually picked up.

I would love for him to take this, but isn't he doing Absolute Boyfriend? The scheduling might be a bit too tight.

But if he does take this, I hope they offer the queen role to Kim Yoo-jung. I've been waiting for them to reunite after TMETS, and it doesn't hurt her chances that she played young Han Hyo-joo in Dong Yi. Then again her cleaning drama is set to air in November so scheduling is an issue too.

That drama was not very good but they played their child parts to the hilt. It would be ideal to see yeo jin-gu reunite with kim so-hyun in a drama like this.

Waaah! Kim Sohyun for this with Jingoo! The wait for over 6 years can end if they can both be offer the leads role! Right now she is on break after working hard for many years. This drama will film in November so it will not affect her study schedule also. Hardworking boy and girl who loves acting more than anything should now reunite.

Jin-goo had so much chemistry with both ladies so hopefully he reunites with them soon. But we'll see since Yoo-jung is a lock with Clean with Passion for Now and So-hyun is up for Love Alarm (where I hope she reunites with either Kim Min-jae or Yook Sung-jae, or both if it pans out).

@fleecestorm Such a drama deserves an epic setting. If not a sageuk, then a drama penned by a high-caliber writer. But most high-caliber writers of contemporary dramas like Noh Hee-kyung, Lee Soo-yeon, or Kim Eun-hee tend to skew older with their casting. Maybe a drama by Park Hye-ryun, who already keeps So-hyun as a regular cameo actress, but I was so underwhelmed by While You Were Sleeping so she needs to regain her creative juices first.

@fleecestorm Something like Asadal would be epic. I've been the three of them would get the chance to work with the writers of Tree with Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons someday. But I was thinking of the writers I'd want for their reunion drama should they choose to go contemporary. But a sageuk is better.

As for WYWS, the first episode opened so strong and the show grew weaker with each passing episode. It's such a shame.

Absolute Boyfriend is a pre-produced drama so filming will be done by September or October.

He had a pretty long break after he finished Reunited Worlds :D His next project after RW was 4 Wheeled Restaurant which only took 2 weeks to film (he filmed this around March). But yeah if he accepts this, it would be a back-to-back filming all over again. XD

She would be done filming in November so I doubt scheduling is an issue. But with her health, I doubt she will do dramas back-to-back.
I'll recommend Kim Sae-ron. She seems to be on a hiatus for quite awhile so it would be lovely to see her back.

I totally agree! I really enjoyed the movie Masquerade and Jingoo's acting in Jackpot proves he can pull this one off. (Although his most recent sageuk is actually Warriors of the Dawn where he also played Gwanghae) And I would love to see Jingoo play a role from the lower class in sageuk. He has mostly played nobilities and royalties (with the exception of Warrior Baek Dongsoo and Deep Rooted Tree).

@fleecestorm He's been gifted with a very rich and deep voice but I love how he also plays around his voice depending on the role. Like how he raised his voice pitch when he played the young and naive Prince Gwanghae in Warriors. Even when his character in Jackpot became a king.

Please do this one, Jingoo! Gwanghae became a king in his 30s but Jingoo played King Yeongjo in Jackpot so well so I'm sure he'd do really well if he accepts! And it would be a great continuation from his movie Warriors of the Dawn as he played the very same role.

YES! Exactly! He starts out as a young prince who is trying so hard to prove himself and then turns into a king who is both ruthless and just and his character development comes across so well in the screen and he just portrayed the role so well. And he was just 18 years old when he played that role.

It shows his fineness as a young actor.
I hope he accepts the offer coz he can nail the role.❤️

Queen's screen time was relatively modest, but Han Hyo Joo acted brilliantly and captivated us. Her chemistry with Lee Byung Hoon was superb and so many of us remember her too while thinking of Masquerade movie. That's why I'm hoping for a Suitable actress for him who can dominate over the story and captivate us. (Any of the Kim's or Park Bo Young or any other fine actress which I'm missing out)

I both love and hate the idea of remaking a classic superhit movie but this role is perfect for yeo jin-gu. This director was great with money flower but so bad with warm and cozy. If this casting does go through I'd want to see him pair up with someone good like kim so-hyun. Having tvn attached to this gives me hope it might be visually stunning if nothing else.

Thanks for this great casting news, girlfriday.

Seo In-guk's turn as Gwanghae in THE KING'S FACE was the one that introduced me to his historical role on the home front during the Imjin War. As a result, Gwanghae is one of my favorite Korean historical figures. Enough for me to watch HWAJUNG / SPLENDID POLITICS for Cha Seung-won's portrayal of him.

I loved the film MASQUERADE, and am eagerly anticipating the drama version. Lee Byung-heon was wonderful in it, especially in his clown persona. I haven't seen WARRIORS OF THE DAWN yet, and now have even more incentive to do so.

I'm so thrilled to have this sageuk to anticipate. MONEY FLOWER was excellent, so I'm expecting a taut plot with lots of skullduggery.

His voice is a work of art. I can't believe someone so young can be so talented. When he played in Jackpot I actually believed he had aged as his character aged. When he smiles he looks like a little boy; when he's serious he looks older. He can play a childish character or a character that is much older than he is. He is one of my favorite Korean actors.

It's has been a while since his memorable performance in "Jackpot." I hope he'll take this! tvN has been the most reliable station lately and they have the money to produce the more costly genres like sageuks.
I'd be happy to see one or two of my equally talented sageuk leading ladies. Kim Yoo-jung, Shim Eun-kyung or Park Eun-bin.
