Premiere Watch: 100 Days My Prince, The Guest

This week we have a light historical romance and a dark horror thriller on the way. One I plan to check out immediately, and the other… I’ll peek at the recap through my fingers to determine whether it’s safe to proceed. Some of us are scaredy cats, okay?

100 Days My Prince

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Historical, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This is the new historical romance from the writer of Scent of a Woman, Dr. Champ, and She’s So Lovable, and it has all of the tropes and then some: A prince wakes up one day a pauper with no memory of having been the crown prince of Joseon, and under a law that he himself decreed, he must marry a maiden before she comes of age. Which of course leads to all sorts of mistaken identity hijinks when the wife berates her new husband for being so utterly useless around the house, as he never once learned how to do things for himself as a royal. I expect Nam Ji-hyun to be adorable and emotionally grounded as usual, and I hope that D.O. makes his prince extra pompous for the comedy factor. I do see a lot of similarities with Shopping King Louis—just replace prince with chaebol and it’s almost the same story—but I expect it to feel very different set in Joseon, with a more serious political assassination plot lurking in the background and a whole kingdom at stake. But please be cute—that’s all I ask!

The Guest

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Horror-thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: A psychic, a priest, and a cop enter a sleepy town where supernatural murders are running rampant… anyone have goosebumps yet? The PD of top-notch thrillers Liar Game and Voice is back with a new drama, which is enough to get me excited alone. The subject matter, on the other hand, is enough to scare me away just by reading the descriptions. The horror-thriller is about a ghost called “Hand” that shows up every few decades and starts a wave of serial killings in a town, and the drama explores the depths of ugliness in humans and spirits alike. Kim Dong-wook is the psychic, Kim Jae-wook is the priest, and Jung Eun-chae is the cop, and the three of them will band together to unravel the strange mystery surrounding the murders. Why do I have the feeling that I’m going to regret it, but watch it anyway?

Are ghosts/horror the newest trend in dramaland? Between The Guest & Ghost Detective, I have a feeling I'll be watching dramas on mute, and through fingers covering my eyes, for the next few weeks.

Choi Daniel has definitely gotten a lot more smexier. I mean, he’s always been cute and always rockin’ the glasses look, but man, he’s lookin’ FIONE in all the snippets I’ve seen of him in his new drama.

Agreed. This is my first time watching Choi Daniel in anything and I'm shook. How have I never seen him before?

5

@greenfields Haha! Idk! He’s been around forever, so where have you been??? Hehe. It’s okay, I always say: better late than never!

Apparently he got back from his mandatory two years of military service just last year, so it’s understandable that you haven’t noticed him. Plus, I think he’s always been kind of a low-profile, off-the-radar kind of actor, so unless you’re following his projects, you probably won’t know much of him.

How is he in The Ghost Detective? Intrigued on his partnering with Park Eun-bin, but not enough to watch... yet.

5

Yes, I know. I bemoan my lack of oppa knowledge at times like this. You must chech him out in Ghost Detective - I hear this scruffy look is a massive departure from his usual look (which I'm not familiar with). ^^

4

@greenfields I might just have to do that! And yep, it even looks like he ditched the specs this time ‘round, yes? Scruffy is good sometimes. It definitely looks good on him!

3

He did! I can't imagine him with them!

2

@greenfields Omg! Hahaha, *I* can barely imagine him WITHOUT 'em!

And honestly, I love that he's like the only one in dramaland that we'll ever really see sporting real glasses throughout an entire show--without a makeover soon after or the glasses being for pure aesthetics. Like, the dude really wears glasses! And he's our main male lead. It's great. It's the little things.

6

@greenfields Wow you really are a Choi Danial beginner. I was irked at first that they were gone. Us glasses wearers must unite, and besides it was a perfect PPL opportunity for eye glass companies. That said, whoever is styling him for Ghost Detective knows what they are doing because that scruff highlights those cheekbones amazingly, and taking him out of tailored suits and into this rumpled look was inspired. He looks good.

7

@egads Ooh, you're right! Geez, dramaland! Why don't you have more appropriate PPLs where it's smoothly woven into the story and the characters vs jarring Subway ones that take away from actual scenes??? Sigh... But yeah, from all the little snippets I've seen of him, he's definitely workin' it. It's a (very) nice change.

PS: Glasses wearers unite! *pushes glasses up after it slides down my nose*

5

@egads @chingu
*wipes glasses to ensure she read that correctly*
"Glasses Wearers Unite!"? I love it! Count me in!

7

Glasses Wearers Unite against the archaic and patriarchal beauty standards leading to offensive "makeover" scenes in which a character's worth in the partnership market is exponentially increased by the removal of optical enhancement device. Said devices are both necessary objects to maintain the basic visual acuity for daily life, and a personal style indicator. Removal of glasses either by forcing the use of contacts and the possible side effects of these devices, or rendering the subject visually impaired, is not only a form of bullying and lookism abuse, but also a dire matter of health and safety. We here at Glasses Wearers Unite are working not only to smash out-dated ideologies and beauty standards, but also to campaign in favor of the convenience and style of glasses in the modern age.

(Though I do have to say once again, Choi Daniel looks fabulous both in and out of glasses. @greenfields and @chingu, perhaps you should watch his bedroom scene in Jugglers for scientific research purposes.)

8

@egads, @greenfields & @chingu—Can I be a signatory on the Glasses Wearers Unite manifesto? I may have said this here at DB before but I dream of the day where the makeover scene culminates with the PERFECT pair of glasses are carefully placed on the protagonist's nose.

Almost all the designers I work with—myself included—wear glasses. We take frame aesthetics seriously! ;D

6

@egads, @greenfields, @chingu & @tsutsuloo,
May I also join 'Glasses Wearers Unite!' ?
Glasses have enhanced my vision for nearly as long as I remember.
Before glasses, I memorized not only how different people walked, but also their voices and what they wore each day. I thought everyone else did that every day too.
👓 = awesome!!
😁

7

@egads @greenfields @tsutsuloo @rukia Lol! Y'all crack me up. YES! It's official: We're now ALL founding members of the highly eloquent and life-changing Glasses Wearers Club.

*adjusts glasses* Cheers!

6

@rukia *clinks my cider*

3

@egads, @rukia, @chingu, @tsutsuloo, @bammsie,

Oh that scene! Thanks for the link! Huzzah for Choi Daniel in glasses. Will we be getting any more samples (strictly for scientific purposes ofc) in his scruffy look? Given his current state be being in Ghost Detective, it seems unlikely but you never know in a kdrama!

JUST finished watching 100 Days My Prince and I. Am. SOLD! Already anxiously waiting for them to be together! D.O.’s definitely one of the good/better idol actors out there and this might just be the drama that’ll officially introduce me to Nam Ji-hyun. It’s got a solid cast and characters you can root for. I adored the child actors! They were fantastic! And omg, was not expecting Kim Sun-ho to be in this, but of course, it was a lovely and pleasant surprise. The dimples are back!

I'm pretty sure we'll see a lot more of both of them from here on out, but man, the little boy really outdid himself with the crying scene right before the time jump. Bravo! Great transition that shows so much of how he became the person he is now.

I'm excited for the 2nd ep, too! I really hope he catches up to her, but based on the previews, I'm not so sure!

Man, I GOTTA check that out just to see that awesome pairing of JJS and KSH! I think I tried watching it, but it didn’t stick with me. Will try again! I can only imagine how fantastic they were–individually and together.

Yes, I love seeing more of him! #stantalent
I first saw him in Strongest Delivery Man and I was like, “Whoa. This guy is GOOD.” He’s charming and charismatic and SUCH a natural on screen! Like, we were supposed to NOT like him in SDM, but we still did. THAT takes talent.

Oof. I’m sure we’ll see him smile every time Nam Ji-hyun’s with him, but huhuhu~ I’m sure we’ll also see him cry, too.

Oh! If you haven’t already, you should totally check out his short drama, You Drive Me Crazy. It’s only 2 eps, but it’s really good. He’s awesome there. And LOTS of dimples! 😉

Definitely going to check out You Drive Me Crazy. The bromance between KSH and JJS in Two Cops was so nuanced and beautiful. I think the drama was worth it just for them. At first, I wasn't too into KSH's character just because he was such a jerk, but KSH made me love him.

I stuck with TWO COPS all the way to the end because it was such a trip watching Kim Sun-ho as the ghost jumping into Jo Jung-suk's body -- and JJS's exquisitely-nuanced channeling of the freeloader's spirit. Absolutely daebak.

Lol @ “... and under a law that he himself decreed, he must marry a maiden before she comes of age.“ Omg, after watching ep 1, I can totally see where this is going and pwahaha! This is going to be good. And frustrating, I’m sure!

And ooh~ after thoroughly reading the whole synopsis for The Guest, I’m definitely much more interested in it now. Must watch! But not in the dark!

I’m usually okay w/ ghost dramas in rom-coms (Oh My Ghostess, Master’s Sun, Let’s Fight Ghost, etc.), but this one seems more on the serious side, so that definitely makes it a lot scarier for me. I can watch our heroes fight ghosts or talk to spirits and tell them to follow the light, but the thought of a priest performing intense exorcisms is certainly not easy for me to watch. But knowing me, I’ll probably end up checking it out later today anyways.

Here's hoping show stays great until the end of the series.

Hi @adal1Adal. Always a mystery where dramas will show up subbed or not. The first episode of THE GUEST (tvN) will broadcast on Sep. 12. After the first episode airs you can check out here to see if it available subbed:
https://ondramanice.tv/drama/hand-the-guest-detail
From past experience if Netflix picks up a drama the subbed version usually appears on this site maybe delayed a bit. I think LIFE appeared subbed after 4 episodes had aired and it was picked up by Netflix.
I am currently waiting to see what will happen to tvN's new Friday night drama BIG FOREST. Current status:
https://ondramanice.tv/drama/big-forest-detail
Here is how LIFE looks subbed through 15 episodes:
https://ondramanice.tv/drama/life-korean-drama-detail
BTW. With the use of adblock I have had no problem streaming here.
Sorry for the long briefing.

I'm about to read LollyPip's recap. Just finished ep. 1 of GUEST, and it looks like it will be an intense metaphysical crime thriller.

1

@pakalanapikake I am trying to be a bit more disciplined so I am passing on THE GUEST. There are a couple of upcoming dramas that I would like to take in including Seo In-guk's new drama (whose name keeps on changing but will be on Viki).
Warning. If you see among Father Kim Jae-wook's exorcist stuff some kettlebells, watch out!

1

LOL at the VOICE reference. Last time I checked, exorcist gear does not consist of "kettlebell, book, and candle." ;-)

I'm interested in metaphysics, and intrigued to see how traditional Korean shamanism figures in THE GUEST. Plus I haven't seen Kim Dong-wook in a dog's age. ;-)

The Guest is an OCN drama and VIU will provide English subs, but maybe Netflix will get the global license.

In my case also, this is my first proper drama of him. I haven't really seen any of his works but I reallly loveeee him, if that makes sense. I first saw him on Ghost but then he turned to be so ji sub, that pissed me off a lot. I find choi daniel a lot more suitable and smexier than so ji sub. Then I tried jugglers but dropped it along the way. Third time is the charm they say, though he actually turned out to be a ghost in Ghost Detective, I am liking it a lot here. Please suggest me if there are any good works of him. Oh I also tried 'untouchable lawmen', a disaster. I don't think any body will be able to finish that one even for the love of choi daniel.

Thanks for your Premiere Watch, girlfriday!

At long last I understand the weird working title of THE GUEST. It makes perfect sense now. But it actually reminds me of Thing from the original 1960s ADDAMS FAMILY with Carolyn Jones and John Astin. As a card-carrying wimp, I'm going to hold onto that image for my inevitable flashbacks to Mo Tae-goo in VOICE, and for when the ghost has too much fun with its serial killings. I'll be sure to keep my bell, book, and candle "handy."

I've enjoyed the first two episodes of 100 DAYS MY PRINCE. The main theme/episode intro is lovely, and uses traditional instruments. OST Part 1 by GUMMY is dandy, with a suitably wistful vibe. I've posted it on my fan wall. The story got off to a solid start, with an unexpected twist in the second episode. It's a veritable OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN reunion -- all they need is a cameo by the third of Park Do-kyung's MovieSound foley artists. ;-)

I'll follow until the end each one of them.

Only goint to talk a little bit about "The Guest". It's an awesome drama so far. If you've watched and loved the best movies on exorcism, demons and spirits all together you'll love this drama.
The acting is perfect so far from the characters who matter. No actor playing an important character have disappointed me.

Kim Jae Wook is the personified sin of lust. He is too much f... hot. It's so wrong for a priest look and act like him in the drama.
