[Trend inspirations] Characters over style

Woohoo Waikiki

By JustMe

When a new theme of the month comes along, I always find it’s the perfect time to look retrospectively into myself and try and understand why I do what I do—or think what I think. So when this new theme came along, I had started to list mentally all the characters who had wardrobes that I admire.

It turns out it wasn’t so much the clothes they were wearing that inspired me, but the character behind them. In fact, you could have two different characters of an opposite spectrum wearing the same T-shirt, shoe, or coat, but I will always find myself salivating for a product on one person versus another. A good example of that would be Kim Min-kyu in I’m Not a Robot and Sohn Oh-gong in Hwayugi. They wore the same sweater in their respective stories, yet I infinitely loved the sweater more on Yoo Seung-ho’s character rather than Lee Seung-gi’s.

I’m Not a Robot

During a rewatch of Because This Life Is Our First with a few Beanies, I began to realize that while Ji-ho’s style is very cool and something I would totally wear, it wasn’t something that necessarily inspired me. While I understood Ji-ho’s character, what she did, and how she thought, I don’t think I could have ever reacted the way she did in certain situations. So while I admire her style, I didn’t necessarily run shopping for that gorgeous purple coat she wore in episode 12.

In contrast, Ha Moon-so in Just Between Lovers broke my heart with her strong desire to heal and move on, and her willingness help those around her heal. Her grief was so raw and how she dealt with it was so real that, soon, without knowing, I found myself shopping for clothes of similar style to what she wore, from the long wool coats to cute sweaters with stripes.

Just Between Lovers

Ji-an in My Ajusshi wasn’t known for her sense of style. Quite the opposite, she always wore the same clothes, but as I grew to relate with her and adore her, her subtle clothes changes would often catch my eye.

In all, I never fall in love with a style instantly. To me, there’s a story behind every clothing choice. And, as we discover our characters, we begin to understand and unravel the clothes they wear.

Congratulations, @justme! This was wonderful. I must me superficial because I don’t usually think of a charadcter’s wardrobe as an extension of them. I just see a pretty coat, on Gong Yoo, and think, “Whoa, he wears that well!” So, thank you for showing me another side to this.

Thank you for reading @ally-le !! It wasn't long but I thought it was important to remember how we get inspired. (and why CF works so well haha)

Thanks for this great post @justme! Really enjoyed the read.

I enjoy spotting changes to character's fashion/clothing in Shows - which does happen sometimes either for the sake of fashion or seasons or to showcase a change in personality. Eg. in the currently airing Mr Sunshine, Kudo Hina's outfits are a treat to watch. At first she wore a certain style, then she wore winter style, then summer came round and her outfits changed! A new style and a new fashion! Such fun. ^^; Or as you point out, in My Ahjusshi, Ji An's clothes were lighter in tone and more feminine at the end, indicating her changed outlook.

I enjoyed your write up most especially this "Ji-an in My Ahjusshi wasn’t known for her sense of style. Quite the opposite, she always wore the same clothes, but as I grew to relate with her and adore her, her subtle clothes changes would often catch my eye".... as I can totally relate with it... for me, the most Ji an is the character I like a lot and I dress as simple as she does....

Thanks for the wonderful right up....

Thank you, for the amazing write-up. It's Daebak.^^
I can totally relate with the story behind every clothing change.
Though, I keenly observe the fashion sense but sometimes when I like the character their simple clothing looks much more better then trendy ones.
Many at times in a drama when two characters wear the same dress I instantly like the dress more on the character I love.

Aw, @justme! What a beautiful piece, I loved reading it. À la TOL’s “Man Who Eats Rare Steak”, people can tell stories through the clothes they wear..

@justme, this is so thoughtful and lovely!
I especially appreciate your little observations. Of course that sweater looks better on the person/character we like! and it was so moving to see how Ji-an gradually changed the way she dressed, little by little, until when we see her again after the time jump, she is wearing lighter colors and a more comfortable smile.
I hope that you continue to collect a wardrobe that tells stories about where you have been and who you are becoming.
Thank you for sharing!

@justme I loved your peice.❤️ I have a similar take because I usually love the outfits more on characters who are either strong, independent, chic or caring as their confidence is on a whole other level. Eg. Misty's Go Hye Ran who slayed

Ah, I loved this @justme ! A very sweet and sincere write up ~ and I agree, I feel the same about certain styles ~ I’m either ambivalent or don’t like, but if I fall for a character I’ll fall for their fashion as well. ^_^

LOL I could write a whole non ironic other piece on ahjumma pants, their practicality, functionality, and most importantly, their effortless style.

When I read the title of this post, I got so excited because I knew exactly what you were going to talk about @justme! The characters are the heart of all k-dramas, and I also often find myself being inspired by their personalities. I think about what I would do if I was the character, and try to apply their strong traits into my actions. You've communicated this idea wonderfully, thank you!!

oh I wish I used that sentence «characters are the heart of kdramas». There has been a shift of dramas recently (or at least the ones I choose to watch) where the story is character-driven and I love it. (my most recent inspiration to better myself is Jang Geurae of course).

What a great post, @justme! I love how clothes can be used to reflect changes in a character's development. And I tend to fall in love with all the coats in K-dramas haha, but there are times when I appreciate the outfits more because of the characters. For example, I related a lot to Dok-mi in Flower Boy Next Door and loved her wardrobe, which was mostly coats, sweaters, and scarves. While that's cozy, it can be suffocating, much like hiding away in your comfort zone, and I'm not sure I'd have liked those same outfits on a different character.

Wow! another perfect example. I admit I did not watch Flower Boy Next Door, but it just went up a few ranks on my list.

i love the clothes i see on dramas! but, it's sad that all the cute tee-shirts and sweatshirts have english words on them (which make them cute) which don't seem so cute in the US because of whatever the statement...
: [

but i do notice the beautiful knits and wool coats featured in the Kdramas (and Jdramas) -- which are not available here in the states...

even the cotton sweatshirts and teeshirts in korea and japan are so nice -- nicer than here in the states...
: [

i think i wanna live over there... for the clothes AND the food... *drools*

It is always a laugh when the poor heroine sports different outfits in each scene (e.g the coats in Weight lifting fairy).
And what's with the horrendous knitted hats complete with pompom?

Lol.. Nice one @justme. I don't really think I've paid attention to the looks of our favorite actors, but Park min young in Why Secretary Kim really made me like skirts, silky blouses and nude heels 😁
