Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 22-28, 2018

It’s been a pretty uneventful week, with most of our shows maintaining their established ranks. The beginning of the week had some preemptions, but that didn’t stop romance Fox Bride Star from getting its views. Even underdog Matrimonial Chaos saw a bit of an increase. And then we have 100 Days My Prince continuing to come out on top with a series high of 12.7 percent. I’m excited to see how the finale will do next week.

For Wednesdays and Thursdays, there’s little change to take note of. My Secret Terrius is still outranking Heart Surgeons, The Guest is still outranking Hundred Million Stars From the Sky (though not by much), and The Ghost Detective is still in a depressing last place. The majority of weekend shows, however, are thriving, with their numbers steadily going up.

So proud of 100dmp, theyre going this far with many rookie actors but all got balance in acting and chemistry, this warm and cozy feeling maybe the one that get many ahjumma fans. Like they said ahjummas who have the remote

I’m so sad seeing the ratings for 100MSFTS dropping each week be a the show is reserving more recognition 😥 I wonder why Koreans don’t like this show?

I was about to say, maybe because it's dark. But then I remember My Ahjussi which also dark but the rating was very good.

I'd say MA was different in tone. HMSFTS is in the same range as Mother that had low ratings too. MA was comparitively lighter than these two.

Agreed! Somehow I get a feel of "Mother" in HMSFTS.

I don't know if I would say My Ahjussi was lighter, but I think the audience could relate to the storyline and characters.

That may not be the case with this drama.

Yea, I just finished Mother and the vibe if gave was similar. Haven’t finished MA, didn’t feel the parallel from the first 2 episodes, besides being equal tight in the dialogue. Mother and TSHLYE has that dark mystery element that depresses the person watching. But Mother had a righteous protagonist and many good side characters (The actress mother was almost a saint, raised 3 girls like her own with so much love). Overall Mother was positive and gave viewers hope. TSHLYE is the opposite. More you watch the more you question humanity. Most viewers are not entertained by acting or cinematography alone.

The acting of My ajusshi and Mother is good and sincere. While in One Hundred Million star carry by despite a decent young cast, lack the skills to bring nuance to the character like both previous drama. It's hard to connect with the character, see the character real feeling and what the writers intend to tell. So I understand why the rating drop. I get bored watching because of it too.

I object that acting skills had anything to do with the ratings. Besides actress of SeungAh every one was praised in viewer response. The ambiguity of their expressions is intentional to keep the mystery alive.

My Ahussi was dark, but there was enormous warmth from the siblings and the goodness of people was all around us. So we all felt hopeful that the goodness will engulf the darkness.
Plus here in HMS, we are dealing with the main protagonist who behaves like a sociopath with no motive that any of us can relate to. I can imagine this not to be to everyone's liking.

My Ahjussi was dark, but the premise was rather simple, I think. And it was somewhat relatable in a depressing kind of way. Where 100MSFTS are full of mystery, psychological thrill, which make it rather heavy.

I’m still trying to find another morally bankrupt protagonist among kdrama. Guess it’s seriously not their thing.

Wikied the original’s ratings and it went downhill from beginning to the second-to-last episode. Highest rating was scored at the end, for reasons we shall find out.

Wouldn’t say great in this year’s scale. Still, I believe from economic pov, this drama is earning money (the production cost is extremely low compared to other dramas) so it’s not bad. Streaming viewership isn’t reported regularly but some articles say it outranked other new shows. Also this drama climbed to #5 in last week’s internet hot topic among dramas — which is surprising for this rating.

100 Day Prince reaches 12%! Manseh! 😄

A plea for more historical dramas:
The stats for Grand Prince and 100DMP in 2018 have shown that viewers want their historical dramas. There were only 2 this year (If you count Mr Sunshine as “historical”, then it’s 3). May your generosity give us more sageuks in 2019! Listen to our petition oh kdrama overlords!

Actually, 100DMP's 12.7 is the fifth highest per episode ratings for all miniseries across all channels (terrestrial & cable) in 2018.
1. Mr. Sunshine (tvN, 18.1)
2. Return (SBS, 17.4)
3. Mr. Black Knight (KBS, 13.9)
4. The Miracle We Met (KBS, 13.1)
5. 100DMP (tvN, 12.7)
(None of MBC's miniseries have reached double digit ratings this year to date.)

The ratings for public channel dramas are abysmal this year due, in part, to increased competition from cable dramas.

To be honest, I love 100 DMP because it use many classic tropes such as amnesia (lol), marriage contract and cohabitation. Maybe Korean viewers want more Sageuk, but as international viewer I watch K-drama specifically for this tropes 😄

MAMA FAIRY is following 100 DAYS PRINCE so I'm very happy!

"MR SUNSHINE" is more historical than the other 2 so we definitely have 3 so far.

I'm looking forward to 2019. ASADAL is going be the more epic sageuk and I'm also excited about Yoo-jin Gu's "THE MAN WHO BECAME KING"

Thanks for the reminder of upcoming sageuks, @kiara. I'm really looking forward to a sojourn in Gojoseon -- long BG (Before Gats) and hopefully with wall-to-wall Manes of Glory and swashbuckling derring-do. As a Gwanghaegun fangirl, I can't wait to see Yeo Jin-gu's second outing as the prince after his turn in the film WARRIORS OF THE DAWN / DAERIB FORCES. Seo In-guk put the historical personage on my radar in THE KING'S FACE. I enjoyed Cha Seung-won's portrayal in HWAJUNG / SPLENDID POLITICS.

MAMA FAIRY sounds like a cross between FRACTURED FAIRY TALES and the epilogue to MOON LOVERS that so many viewers wished to see. Ko Du-shim (who shredded my heart in ALL ABOUT MY MOM) and Ahn Kil-kang (whom I feel as if I haven't seen in a dog's age) -- sign me up! Moon Chae-won grabbed my eye in PAINTER OF THE WIND, WAR OF THE ARROWS, and MOOD OF THE DAY. Yoon Hyun-min was great fun to watch in DISCOVERY OF LOVE with dermatology partner Sung Joon, and carpenter house mates Kim Seul-gi and Jung Yu-mi. He was very good in BEAUTIFUL MIND. This looks like a fun show, with a distaff GOBLIN vibe.

Here's a good article from Variety explaining why DF shut down. Essentially, DF's subscription revenue can't keep up with high broadcast licensing fees. (While kdramas are growing popular internationally, it's still a niche.)

I'm a little sad that Bad Papa isn't receiving more love. I wish the drama had aired at another time. The competition is strong for Monday and Tuesday nights. It's shame because the drama is actually pretty good and has a comic book feel to it that I enjoy.

BAD PAPA is one show whose comic book feel I enjoy. DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING also has a superhero twist as far as the younger twin brother is concerned. He can generate ch'i with his palms to warm (thaw?) ingredients. He has to be careful when he shakes hands. LOL! The super olfactory and taste senses of his siblings are impressive, but not as exciting as his microwave mitts. ;-)

If you haven't seen SOULMATE, it's a dandy, unique examination of the concept via the relationships of six individuals, with Shin Dong-wook as the charming but jaded male lead who works as a music director. The OST and background music are simply epic.

In a way, DJGIW reminds me a bit of SOULMATE -- almost like a romance with food & cooking themselves. Wow. When I think of it that way, it's easier to tolerate the female lead and the lovelorn boss, who now has another target in her sights. At least they are not as irritating as the second lead female in SOULMATE became.

Live dangerously and give DJGIW a whirl. ;-)

Thanks for compiling this week's ratings, @sailorjumun.

Most of the shows I'm currently watching are on cable stations, and they're all doing nicely. It's gratifying to see how well 100 DAYS MY PRINCE is doing on tvN. I will truly miss its gorgeous cinematography and music -- and memorable characters -- when it draws to a close this coming week. THE GUEST continues to mesmerize with its relentless, diabolical twists as it heads for the finale. THE THIRD CHARM is frustrating at times, with characters who are humanly flawed and relatable, but it is oddly appealing. Heist drama THE PLAYER is amping up as the title character's back story is revealed; Song Seung-heon shines as the cheekily suave ringleader. ROOM NO. 9 has me hooked on the switched identities, and I don't mean the two female leads'. THE BEAUTY INSIDE is different enough from the original movie version that I'm still intrigued.

BAD PAPA, MY SECRET TERRIUS, and DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING are the only ones from the big three terrestrial stations I'm live-watching, and all happen to be on MBC. That's strange. BAD PAPA is bumping along near the bottom, but I'm enjoying Jang Hyuk's performance as loving family man, ex-boxer, ex-cop, and undocumented guinea pig. TERRIUS is a spytastic hoot. DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING is exiled in late-night oblivion, and feels like a sibling sit-com crossed with LET'S EAT and a side of superhero (anyone recall the fiery villainess in FAITH?), with Shin Dong-wook dodging the attentions of a boss who channels screen idols ranging from Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe by way of Madonna. If only his subordinate were not such a dumb bunny ex-jock.

Yes! @pakalanapikake I really enjoy Jang Hyuk's performance. He portrays his character with such warmth and his performance feel so real and raw at times. I totally believe him as a family man wanting to do the right him for his family while also being an ex-cop and ex-boxer.

Jang Hyuk delivers a one-two punch with his sincerely emotive presence coupled with boxing and martial arts prowess. His eyes eloquently convey his characters' inner lives. He goes whole hog and takes on personas who are flawed, troubled, conflicted, and less-than-perfect, and makes me care about them. I never get the sense that I'm seeing a recycled characterization.

He does his own stunts, and it's a treat to watch him in action. I've been a fan since seeing his swordfighting in CHUNO, which prompted me to watch him in BEAUTIFUL MIND. His nuanced performance as a person unable to express emotion blew me away. I loved his lovelorn honorable loan shark in GREASY MELO / WOK OF LOVE, which had ex-con action sequences and him playing his late father the boxer. But I'm enjoying this role as "bad papa" even more. ;-)

Jang Hyuk gave an incredible performance in BEAUTIFUL MIND which was the first time I had seen him in a drama. I am still ticked off about the 2 episode cut. I passed on BAD PAPA but enjoyed his work in VOICE and WOK OF LOVE.

Aw, shucks, @julyrox its official... Thanks.

JH is hilarious in FATED TO LOVE YOU, and completely over the top, which is a common complaint. But then he turns on a dime, and unloads a broadside of sincerity or pathos, and you don't know what hit you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fhTkmE4F4U

If you like sageuks, be sure to catch him in TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS and SHINE OR GO CRAZY, in which he portrays Goryeo 4th Prince Wang So (same character as Lee Joon-gi in MOON LOVERS). I also enjoyed his turns in DAEMANG, the drama special OLD GOODBYE, and the films PLEASE TEACH ME ENGLISH (he tap dances) and WINDSTRUCK, among others.

I've come across that first youtube video before and it always makes me laugh. You given me a lot to consider and although I'm not too keen on sageuks I do recall hearing good things about Tree With Deep Roots, so there goes another drama that's been added to my To Watch List, lol.

Watching - more or less - several shows. But falling behind on some of those "not bad, but not really good" shows such as Third Charm.
Only really Must Watching 3 shows right now - Room #9, Ms Ma, and Hide and Seek.
Hide and Seek is kind of an anomaly for me - it's such a mess that I cannot wait to see which snake bites itself and which parent eats their young. Just watched the latest episodes, and people just keep getting more evil and more stupid. But at least the previews give some hint of the karma to come.

THE THIRD CHARM has had a difficult time of it. It does not help that it airs at 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. I have to think something happened last Friday/Saturday that pushed the ratings down. I am guessing but maybe there was some sporting event on at TTC's usual broadcast time. I am only speculating.
As it is I am 4 episodes behind on TTC partially because of the DF fiasco so I will have to do some bingeing this week and get caught up.

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo,

I think you're right about the time slot being a factor in THE THIRD CHARM's ratings. It airs late on Friday night and probably loses out to TGIF activities. It really is too bad, because I think the actors have been doing a fine job. This week's episodes were good. I just realized today that Soo-jae Orabeoni had a cameo as Dead Daddy in TERIUS BEHIND ME. Yang Dong-geun has been in a gazillion dramas and movies in his 20-year career. He's doing a wonderful job as Soo-jae.
